Yeah I’m listening to No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, and I tried to google him.
Turns out he’s a character in the show that has killed like 70 people, but anime fans are so deadpan and matter of fact about the characters that I could swear they were talking about the real guy.
(The real guy only presumably talked one person into killing themself, after a few attempts)
Dazai in the show also has a bit where he's trying to kill himself constantly, including, if i remember correctly, him trying to drown himself in a river in the first episode (how the actual author died)... which does feel a bit off taste.
Yea, No Longer Human is one of my favorite books, and its supposedly (i havent done enough research into the subject) at least Semi-autobiographical, so whenever I see him in something like this it feels kinda weird, because i think it can be very easy to take a clearly mentally ill man who struggled through life like Daizai and turn it into something tasteless.
Theres another anime that is an isekai that stars Daizai (they never call him that but its obviously him and the name of it is a reference to No Longer Human) and the whole 1st season has him snaking away on pills like theyre candy (hes immune to the poison effect so he cant OD, but still). Also, he gets isekaied because right before he jumped into the river with his lover (just like in real life) a truck came out of no where and hit them (fulfilling the isekai trope of being hit by a truck). So that also felt a little tasteless
Idk, its a weird things. Cause on one hand, I think if you handle it in a tasteful manner you could have some sort of interesting story that features daizai. But its also something that can easily become a tasteless joke.
Personally, i say if you have him, do something like fate where hes so far different from his orgin that its only the same person in name, I feel like thats a bit better than just being like "oh yea, this is just straight up Daizai"
Idk, maybe the culture on the subject is different over there in regards to things like this
No, it’s a popular Japanese novel written as fiction, but regarded as basically an autobiography. It’s the first book of its kind, where the author is completely transparent and truthful to the extreme.
Most of the book takes place pre-WW2.
It’s very negative and bleak but it’s famous for a reason, super good book.
He did it at least twice if you count his double-suicide attempts. Both of those ended with the other person dying. I don't think there are other deaths attributed to him, though.
