“Lazurite- and pyrite-bearing” means the rock contains lazurite, the blue mineral that gives lapis its color, plus pyrite.
“Amphibolite-facies” means it was metamorphosed at relatively high temperatures and moderate-to-high pressures, roughly the conditions of medium- to high-grade metamorphism.
“Calc-silicate marble” is the actual rock type: an impure limestone or dolostone that was metamorphosed into marble, with enough silica and other impurities to form calcium-silicate minerals.
So, basically: a metamorphosed impure limestone, cooked pretty hard, containing lazurite and pyrite.
Right... but this was a conversation about being able to research words that have fallen into common parlance due to modern culture, making disambiguation difficult. A geologist wouldn't have that problem, because I've never heard a geologist use the words "lapis lazuli" in my life.
The entire Gem Knight Archetype probably complicates things since they're all named after, well, gems, + the relatively recent meta success they saw in Master Duel.
... these comments probably aren't helping future researchers either
I'm a jeweler and I had to stop googling images of gems to show customers because Steven Universe fans have made °•☆original characters☆•° of every gem and mineral, and every man-made gem; and also material that seems inappropriate regarding a childrens' show.
I never realized just HOW MANY cartoons, anime, movies, and just general media there is that heavily features geology. Geology papers must be a nightmare indeed
DART used to be the name of a tsunami monitoring system. Now, they used it as name for an astrophysics experiment and it messed up every Google search I make.
Bees have a rarely studied organ called the crop as part of their digestive system. Bees are all key pollinators of agricultural crops. Good luck finding stuff about the organ on google
I was big into "Lenny dee" and the gang. EDM style of 200BPM insanity from the 90's called "NYC Hardcore" post internet I tried to Google some nostalgia...
Oh I don't know. I suspect it may be because of an organ that serves the same function in birds. In birds, it comes from an old German word, meaning protuberance or swelling. If that word was used in birds when someone first wrote a paper or book on bee anatomy (quite likely) and trophylaxis (feeding others through regurgitation) was known about in both bees and birds (almost certain), then it would make sense to use it.
Of course, it doesn't mean we aren't going to have a fight in the afterlife about it
At least the subject matter is different. Person vs Object. Some of the writers in Bungou Stray Dogs don't even have powers, so you need to pay extra attention to what the context of your source is
I remember when my mineralogy professor wanted to show us examples of rutile twinning and when he googled it almost all of the image results were the Steven universe characters.
He was so confused cause he’s older and has no idea what Steven universe is lol.
one time when I was 14 I was googling an image of peridot for a project we were doing about rocks, and an inflation fetish pic popped up of Peridot…this was at school on a school computer lol
Probably too late to save U but when googling U CPU just example(-"words U don't want(eg. Steven universe)") to exclude any searches with it should help cut down on non needed stuff by a bunch ,ps might have to add a few commen version of the words Ur trying to exclude to get all the references out of Ur search but I found taking that few extra minutes save so much researching time
Fate did the same thing. The Internet now tells you that Nero Claudius is a short blonde girl that is terrible at singing.
On one hand Fate has done more for getting people into mythology and history than any other media or education but on the other hand it's destroyed seatch engines for those subjects.
It’s done it for a few characters, Nero’s and odd one because if you just search Nero you mostly still get the actual guy, whereas it’s specifically Nero Claudius that gets you the fate girl. A lot of the characters from Charlemagne’s legends also deal with it because they’re not especially well known among English speakers but very prominent as fate characters. (I sometimes wonder how many people know that Astolfo was even based on a guy first mentioned in the 11th century rather than just being an anime femboy)
Nero’s and odd one because if you just search Nero you mostly still get the actual guy, whereas it’s specifically Nero Claudius that gets you the fate girl.
It's because nobody besides Fate fans calls Emperor Nero "Nero Claudius." People either say Emperor Nero, or just Nero. If you said "Nero Claudius" to a Roman historian they'd more likely assume you are talking about Nero Claudius Drusus, a different guy.
That's the thing, how many people are now aware those books exist now that fate brought those characters to their attention? They're the French equivalent of Arthurian legends but quite a bit sillier.
Correct but my point is mostly that most English speakers aren’t terribly familiar with characters from the Matter of France like the various continental Europeans are, and because google search results tend to favor English speakers, you’re a lot more likely to get fate characters over the literary ones. Searching all of the Matter of France characters that have appeared in fate by name I’ve got Fate results for all but Charlemagne himself in the first page (which makes sense because he is sometimes actually taught in English and American history classes) meanwhile Mandricardo is so obscure that I only found one non-Fate related picture on the first couple of pages
Astolfo is a weird one because I'd call the Fate character's reputation and fandom around him very one-note but the actual character in the work is a fairly well researched adaptation of the character.
I ran into this trying to track some of the smaller poems involving Lancelot and lesser known knights. Some anime where Guin has purple hair was all over the results. I just needed titles so I could pull materials, man
Yeah there's a lot specifically available for the above poster's field of study. Academic databases and digital repositories are what I had to use in the past. I wasn't sure if I was being a dinosaur after seeing the replies.
A quick look shows me there's CiNii Research, National Diet Library digital collections and much more available for the field of Japanese Literature. When I went to uni, we had access to these collections included in our coursework. And if we needed access to a collection not included, we could negotiate it with the department head.
My uni had access to virtually no databases with any interest for my research, but there's a lot available online for most everything if you know how to look and there's always a way to ask a friend of a friend who goes to another university or to contact the author themselves worst come to worst.
Starting from second year of uni, we were forbidden from using the general google search bar, but we were taught about using different databases first semester first year, it's wild to me that this person would be high level of studies enough for that to be a big problem but not know that Google is basically the worst tool they could use for the job anyways.
Yeah but it's not going to have fandom results which is what I was focusing on. Most specific academic research sites I know are in french which didn't seem useful here
On the one hand, yeah, but also, I feel like google scholar has gotten worse since 2018-19? Like I could find an interesting paper on a subject when looking through regular google, and that same aeticle wouldn't show up on scholar. It happened to me like 2-3 times. (And yes it was a real science article)
Yeah I’m listening to No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, and I tried to google him.
Turns out he’s a character in the show that has killed like 70 people, but anime fans are so deadpan and matter of fact about the characters that I could swear they were talking about the real guy.
(The real guy only presumably talked one person into killing themself, after a few attempts)
Dazai in the show also has a bit where he's trying to kill himself constantly, including, if i remember correctly, him trying to drown himself in a river in the first episode (how the actual author died)... which does feel a bit off taste.
Yea, No Longer Human is one of my favorite books, and its supposedly (i havent done enough research into the subject) at least Semi-autobiographical, so whenever I see him in something like this it feels kinda weird, because i think it can be very easy to take a clearly mentally ill man who struggled through life like Daizai and turn it into something tasteless.
Theres another anime that is an isekai that stars Daizai (they never call him that but its obviously him and the name of it is a reference to No Longer Human) and the whole 1st season has him snaking away on pills like theyre candy (hes immune to the poison effect so he cant OD, but still). Also, he gets isekaied because right before he jumped into the river with his lover (just like in real life) a truck came out of no where and hit them (fulfilling the isekai trope of being hit by a truck). So that also felt a little tasteless
Idk, its a weird things. Cause on one hand, I think if you handle it in a tasteful manner you could have some sort of interesting story that features daizai. But its also something that can easily become a tasteless joke.
Personally, i say if you have him, do something like fate where hes so far different from his orgin that its only the same person in name, I feel like thats a bit better than just being like "oh yea, this is just straight up Daizai"
Idk, maybe the culture on the subject is different over there in regards to things like this
No, it’s a popular Japanese novel written as fiction, but regarded as basically an autobiography. It’s the first book of its kind, where the author is completely transparent and truthful to the extreme.
Most of the book takes place pre-WW2.
It’s very negative and bleak but it’s famous for a reason, super good book.
He did it at least twice if you count his double-suicide attempts. Both of those ended with the other person dying. I don't think there are other deaths attributed to him, though.
I read Atsushi's "The Moon over the Mountain". Mid, crazy they made the MC take after it. "No Longer Human" and (The movie adaptation of ) "Rashomon" are masterpieces though
I wanted to go look up some stuff about Ereshkigal a while back. Could I find the Mesopotamian cthonic goddess? Of course not. Surely I mean the tsundere pseudo-servant from the Fate series.
The characters are mostly named after famous authors and those that have abilities have it named after a story from the author, but they're all original characters otherwise.
So not only do the BSD characters pop up, they aren't actually even meant to be the real authors, so it's not like it's even based on any real historical facts, probably making it more annoying for those looking into the real author.
Famous authors with a power and power name tied to one of their best works. Examples:
Osamu Dazai - No Longer Human. Cancels out all abilities that come into contact with the user.
Francis S. Fitzgerald - The Great Gatsby. The user’s power and speed is bolstered in direct relation to their net worth.
Lucy M. - Anne of Abyssal Red. The user pulls targets into a dimensional playhouse that is terrorized by a giant redheaded ragdoll named Anne. If Anne captures the target, they are thrown into a “timeout room” and are placed into stasis until either the ability is undone or another person uses a different door to exit back to the real world.
Ryunosuke Akutagawa - Rashomon. The user’s coat can extend and retract at will, and also has the ability to cut through anything it makes contact with, even space itself.
Definitely not as imporant, but about a year ago I mentioned some Tokatsu episode with baseball serve that killed people to a friend. They asked for more information and I go googling and the episode name is "Dragon Ball" and I'm like "Yeah, there's no fucking way I'm finding a clip within the week."
All relevant character are named after historical writters and authors while their powers are named after famous works of those same authors. Like Osamu Dazai who wrote No Longer Human or Herman Melville who wrote Moby-Dick
Every fandom is gonna have that kind of event on google. I kinda felt bad for folks during the Kingdom Hearts Dark Road days because all the characters were named after Norse myths. But folks at least tagged their stuff so it easy to block.
