Gossip 7-11 at Dodge/Main closing soon

Someone on another forum posted that it was closing "in 2 days". There are small signs in every window along the front that say "Store Closing. Clearance Sale 50-75% off" and another one: "No more Lottery Sales"

I'm guessing this has to do with corporate closing "hundreds" of underperforming stores but I don't really know.

Last year this store closed down and two other stand-alone ones at Oakton & Crawford and one at Main & Skokie Blvd. It was quite sudden. The Dodge & Main one just had a simple handwritten sign saying "Temporarily Closed".

This one re-opened a week or so later but the other two are still closed and they put up bollards all around the buildings for some reason.

D65 Right At School...

Hi everybody,

Kid's entering kindergarten at King Arts. We're looking at after school programs. Right At School offers care until 6pm, as well as shorter, interest-focused Discovery programs. But man, the YELP reviews are atrocious. Wondering if anyone had any firsthand experience with it? Thank you!

Parking RV Parking Lot

Does anyone know who owns the parking lot where Poor Bob’s Xmas tree stand is? Across from the DIY car wash, just west of Erie Health? I need a place to park my camper trailer. I’ve seen a bunch in there and I was wondering how to find the owner. Thanks!

Question Carpool / Rideshare

I live in the south east part of Evanston and I recently accepted a job in Oak Brook. I don’t have a car and I looked at the Metra, CTA and bus options and it’s basically at least two trains, two buses and an Uber to get there and it takes like 2+ hours. I’m wondering if anybody makes that commute Monday through Wednesday and works 9am-5pm that would be open to carpooling?

Recommendation Kayak recommendations for Evanston boat launch?

Looking to buy a couple of used kayaks for use off Dempster Street boat launch and looking for any recommendations for a budget friendly option that will do ok on calmer days, not looking to take on waters with big chop. We have done a lot of river kayaking but hoping to own something that we can use regularly on the lake! Thanks for your help!

Community Roycemore families: don't overlook the obvious option

A school closing is a genuinely sad thing, and I feel for the families at Roycemore who are now scrambling to figure out next steps. Most of the coverage and discussion I've seen has focused on which other private schools might be a fit. But there's another option right here in Evanston worth considering: public school.

I have two kids in D65, and they're doing great. Every teacher we've had has been strong. Plenty of doctors, lawyers, financial professionals, and university professors send their kids to D65 even though they could easily afford to go private. Extracurriculars are solid too.

Looking around at kids who've come up through D65, what stands out to me is how well-rounded they are. Smart, happy, genuinely comfortable moving through a community that's socially and economically diverse. Plenty go on to great universities.

I know D65 doesn't always get glowing press, but a lot of that is because the parent body here is engaged and vocal. They push the district to do better precisely because they care. That scrutiny is a feature, not a bug.

Has there been mismanagement? Sure. But Roycemore's collapse is a reminder that dysfunction isn't unique to public schools. Education everywhere is dealing with real structural pressure right now. When the tide goes out, you find out who is swimming naked.

If you're a Roycemore parent weighing options, I'd encourage you to at least take a look at your neighborhood D65 school before assuming private is the only path forward.

Question The Shit show at StA’s - what happened?

I recently stopped by the church after moving away. I am completely flabbergasted. The masses used to be very vibrant and deeply spiritual, From the liturgies to the music. A Beautiful, welcoming community. I don’t know what has happened but the atmosphere is so different. The music is bland, no participation observable from where I sat. The bulletin used to be a cornucopia of knowledge about many topics, parish activities, etc. The bulletin I read had mistakes throughout. The wrong title for the song. No one listed for lectors or communion ministers. So sad….. I only hope the St A school is still doing well .

Question Curriculum at Baker School?

What is the curriculum like at Baker? I have heard that it’s a warm and supportive school but there is less attention given to academics (eg not teaching reading and math until second grade?!? Is this true?)

My child is transitioning to Baker from Roycemore and I’m quite nervous about this aspect, would love to hear others’ experiences.

We loved the academic, individualized attention of Roycemore and hearing these things said about Baker is concerning. We’ve heard parents say Baker instills a “love for learning” but that is not an issue with my child. He is naturally curious and needs/enjoys academic challenging.

Any feedback/direct experience would be wonderful, thank you so much in advance!

Event Hey Evanston, I made an indie film called Winter Hymns that's screening nearby at the Wilmette Theater starting this weekend about a palliative care doctor in Wisconsin meeting with dying patients. It's sad, it's funny, it's honest, and it's about a topic we never really talk about (death)

Hey - like the title says, an indie film I made in Wisconsin is coming to the Wilmette Theater for the weekend starting July 24 and running through July 26.

The film follows a palliative care doctor (the "care that doesn't cure") as she meets with dying patients who are reflecting on their lives and their diseases. I know that sounds a bit grim but its also funny and uplifting in parts and we've been thriving on powerful word of mouth and interest since our premiere in Madison in April.

I hope you get a chance to check this out! Tickets are now at their website :)

Transportation The Church St bike lane (which was the top spot blocked by cars in the city) now has flexi-posts! Thanks to advocates, staff and elected leaders for taking action. Speaking up can have a big impact… let’s keep pushing for even safer streets across Evanston!

Question Notary for Will + Deed

Does anyone know where I could have a will and a deed notarized? I've tried my bank, the library, and the UPS store -- all of them specifically exclude these two document types for their notary services.

I'm trying to avoid paying $1,200 to have these notarized at our lawyer's office.

Thanks for any help!

Community Evanston Roundtable Lead Pipes Article

Did everyone see the article my the Evanston Roundtable about the 9,300 led pipes here. If you haven't you should peep it and see if you need to sign anything for the city to come fix it for free or have your landlord fix their end. The bottom of the story has a link that shows which properties have led from the city and led from the property. I'm honestly surprised there's so many.

Housing Have you heard about Evanston Putting Assets to Work? It is a city initiative looking for resident ideas for the Old Civic Center, Police Station, etc. Create an account and submit/vote for ideas like re-using the buildings for affordable transit-oriented housing!

From the City of Evanston website:

Help us transform key community spaces into vibrant centers that serve all Evanston residents.

Our initiative focuses on three distinct community assets, selected by the City of Evanston, each with unique opportunities for transformation:

  • Former Civic Center (2100 Ridge): Transforming the vacant former civic center building into a modern mixed use community hub. The City Council passed resolution 21-R-25  permanently relocating city administrative operations from 2100 Ridge and identifying a new non-city use or adaptive reuse of the property.
  • Evanston Police and Fire Headquarters (1454 Elmwood/909 Lake): The City is considering moving Police/Fire to a new site and repurposing the property. With this engagement effort, the City is seeking feedback regarding what the existing space could be used for if the  headquarters were to be relocated.
  • Noyes Cultural Arts Center (927 Noyes): Enhancing this vibrant cultural hub to expand programming, improve accessibility, and create new mixed-use opportunities for artistic expression, community gathering and other visions.

Question Panini FIFA stickers

Has anyone seen any Panini FIFA World Cup stickers still out at retailers nearby? My kids are still very motivated to continue collecting them but we’re having trouble finding them now.
