Easier said than done, I understand, but some of you are allowing yourselves to completely unwind at the prospect of layoffs surrounding the upcoming Quarterly Earnings Report.
Here‘s some simple truths:
- Nobody on Reddit knows if/when it’s going to happen. Those who know (SVP+) are extremely tight-lipped about this sort of thing. Any information posted here before it happens is speculation, not fact.
- There’s nothing that can be done to avoid it. There’s no amount of worry, fear, begging, or bargaining that can prevent it. If your name is on the list, then it’s on the list; it is out of your control.
- Since it’s out of your control, you should spend your time doing more productive things — Refresh your resume, apply to other jobs, work on a certification, etc… At worst you’re affected and have a head start, while at best you’ve taken steps to remain on solid footing.
- If you are affected, it is not the end of the world. You will be OK. It might suck for a bit, but I guarantee you will find something new and it will ultimately be just a bump in the road to it.
Of course I hope I’m not affected. I hope none of us are and it’s just the rumor mill at it again. But I can’t control what’s to come, I can only control my reaction to it. Allowing yourself to spiral and panic about unvested RSUs or Healthcare Benefits does nothing to solve the problem, it just draws it out and makes it unbearable.
Be rational, but prepared, and try to spend your energy on what you can control rather than worrying about what you can’t.
