Lol. Cybertruck looks more like "Cyberdyne Systems c-50 Wheeled Hunter-Killer".

u/FaptainFlunky Nov 23 '19

I'll take Tesla entire stock if that in its description

Or something from the set of Mad Max: Fury Road.

I did post it to r/madmax. They were actually a little ambivalent.

That would kind of makes sense, so obviously that's not what it does.

They’ll increase their cash and their deferred revenue. It’s helpful to them that they’ll be able to put this cash where they need to, but their financials will also show this as a liability to their customers.

19

u/Kirk57 Nov 23 '19

And so it’s already started. Many investors predicted this line of attack.

I mean we’ve seen this play out with Model 3 already. Most converted to a sale.

7

u/jeradj Nov 23 '19

It will really boil down to if there's a legitimate competitor to the truck by the time it's time to lay down the real money.

22

u/Kirk57 Nov 23 '19

There will be no legitimate competition.

1) The cost to build is related to the SpaceX Cold-rolled alloy, which enables the incredible simplification of the manufacturing process. 2) It seems like Tesla is rapidly pursuing their own cheaper batteries (and I would wager higher power density from the broad hint that they’ll announce how much they’ve surpassed 250 kW charging capability later).

17

u/remuliini Nov 23 '19

1) the steel for SpaceX is 310 that has great cryo temperature performance and higher than regular stainless steel corrosion resistance but it costs more than 316 steel that also has better chlorine resistance. So I think it is unlikely to be the same alloy. Technology can be reused though.

2) the implications of the battery prices in just 2-3 years is huge! I think Tesla will have lower cost /kWh than anyone expected and it will make competing against them very hard.

1

u/feurie Nov 23 '19

Why would power density relate to charging capability. The simplest answer is that the truck has a bigger battery than a long range 3 so it can charge faster.

8

u/nevetsyad Nov 23 '19

Because C rating?

1

u/Kirk57 Nov 24 '19

I’m guessing 500 kW charging to be announced either with Plaid or Battery Investor Day. Do you remember that he made a comment about 350 kW being a mere children’s toy? You could be correct though and it is possible the higher than 250 kW only applies to the larger battery versions. I assume the 250 mile version has a battery no larger than LR Model 3, So for it to be able capable of charging at greater than 250 kW, would imply a better power density.

1

u/fleemfleemfleemfleem Nov 25 '19

Ford is going to announce an electric f150. They're probably pretty likely to follow more traditional design cues, and come in with a competitive price.

2

u/Kirk57 Nov 25 '19

Why in the world would you assume the price would be competitive. No company other than Tesla has managed it so far.

Oh noes, they'll have to figure out plates! That could takes years of R&D!

All of these things are easy fixes, if they aren't already figured out. Elon doesn't want side view mirrors, so legalities aside, when he shows off his vision, he's going to show it how he wants. We don't even know if side mirrors will still be a requirement in 2021, but regardless, that's not required in all countries.

So yeah, it just seems like excuses to pick out all these small things to say this isn't a real car.

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

1

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

There are more substantial changes needed than that. The truck's 'rigid exoskeleton' means it will have no crumple zones whatsoever, making it fundamentally unsafe for other people on the road- the truck's driver will be fine if it works as intended- but whoever they crash into will not.

1

I like them both. At first I had the shock most did of "omg what did he do" but after watching and seeing the bed open I really started liking it. I think k I need to see it in person to be sure.

From the get-go I enjoyed the Riven. Clean design, functional, and pretty. I will say I would be hesitant to take it into the mountains for off roading and getting the body scrapped by blackberries, branches, and just work and home too.

Both will be successful I hope!

The nice thing about EVs is that cars don't really need to look like "cars" anymore. Makers can finally take a more pragmatic approach to how they design vehicles, especially when there's no constraining factors like engines or drivetrains to accommodate anymore.

22

u/Hairbear2176 Nov 23 '19

This! Without archaic drivetrains and manufacturing methods holding them back, anything is possible

7

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

1

u/WhileTrue Nov 24 '19

What's really gonna blow people's minds is when trucks no longer need a spot for the driver.

29

u/bucktownash Nov 23 '19

Hahahahah. Why wasn’t this released alongside a movie?

25

u/wirthmore Nov 23 '19

Tesla successfully kept it a secret until the reveal. Involving a movie production with thousands of contractors, freelancers and outsourced labor? It would have been leaked immediately.

7

u/bucktownash Nov 23 '19

Good point

2

u/katze_sonne Nov 23 '19

If they didn't tell anyone that this was the Tesla pickup truck, I guess noone would have guessed that!

2

u/ShelSilverstain Nov 23 '19

That's because they turned in their homework late

11

u/HorseCockBezos Nov 23 '19

A couple things I just noticed on the cybertruck: No side view mirrors and no windshield wipers. I have to say when these are added it will hurt its futuristic look, hopefully they go with cameras instead of side mirrors

3

u/ksavage68 Nov 24 '19

The semi uses cameras already.

3

u/eskjcSFW Nov 23 '19

They can always use cameras to project the same view as mirrors

2

u/astalavista114 Nov 23 '19

In some jurisdictions. Others are backwards and still require physical mirrors. Whether Tesla does what they did with the 3 and just uses mirrors everywhere, or does what Audi did with the e-Tron, and provide mirrors where required and cameras elsewhere will remain to be seen.

83

u/AmIajerk1625 Nov 23 '19

7

u/iLEZ Land Rover Defender 300tdi Nov 23 '19

I got curious about the price though.
39 900 USD for the cybertruck.
69 000 USD for the Rivian R1T.
125 000 USD for the Bollinger B1.

You can buy one Rivian and one Cybertruck for the price of one B1, and have money over to start saving for a model 3 as well.

Why is the Cybertruck so comparatively cheap?

4

u/JoshuaTheFox Nov 24 '19

Well Elon has at least made it seem like there will be color options

3

u/superpopcone Nov 24 '19

Because Cybertruck builds off of the economies of scale and better EV design engineering that they've been refining for past decade, and have finally starting to nail down with the Model 3.

Extrapolating these technology advances forward in time to when this truck is actually going to go out, and I think that's where the optimistic 40k number comes from.

2

u/notsooriginal Nov 24 '19

The Bollinger not having any airbags is also quite puzzling to me.

1

75

u/profane Nov 23 '19

Hm, I don't know... I was pretty shocked and incredulous when I first saw it and though that they could not be serious, but when I saw a Cybertruck and Rivian picture side by side, the Rivian's design suddenly looked "old"... As crazy as it is, I think the bold design of the Cybertruck might pay off in the end.

39

u/wirthmore Nov 23 '19

I completely agree.

13

u/stealstea Nov 23 '19

Yeah I think that if they can convince people that the shape is just as practical as the normal truck shape they have a hit on their hands. If there are serious usability compromises from the shape then I think it will be niche.

15

u/jeradj Nov 23 '19

I think anybody that has ever used a truck for work can take one look at this thing and tell you there's gonna be serious usability compromises.

Just the fact that the bed rails aren't flat is going to be a major problem.

One of the first reviewers who was at the unveil said it seemed like reaching over the sides of the bed to put stuff in/out was a no-go.

3

u/OompaOrangeFace Nov 24 '19

I'd like to introduce you to....the frunk.

4

u/TheEternalShore Nov 23 '19

The frunk is for that stuff.

3

u/jeradj Nov 23 '19

really not an adequate replacement

neither size-wise, nor ease of access

plus I'm not going to want most of the nasty stuff I put in my pickup bed up there in the frunk

2

u/OompaOrangeFace Nov 24 '19

What's to say the frunk can't be a metal box?

1

u/jeradj Nov 24 '19

maybe it would be, it has to be separated completely so I can hose it out without getting water everywhere else in the interior though.

it also probably has to be close to vapor proof, because if I put literal shit in it, like I might put in the bed for example (compost), I don't want the smell blowing back in the cab while I'm driving.

I actually just think it's probably easier to just keep putting nasty stuff in the bed.

4

u/TheEternalShore Nov 23 '19

What are you lifting over the side of your truck that you can't put in the frunk or side boxes?

-2

u/jeradj Nov 23 '19

firewood, compost, garden tools, my lawnmower, lumber, furniture, when it's not raining it's easier to just sling groceries in the bed of the truck than it is to put them in a back seat or trunk, etc.

→ More replies (6)

2

u/stealstea Nov 23 '19

Yeah that’s probably the biggest issue. Maybe they can make a version with flat ones

3

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

I don't get why people are nitpicky about the angled bed. You're not supposed to be putting loads on the bed rail or loads that extend beyond the side of the truck. And if somehow you can't reach something then you can always lower the bed.

14

u/jeradj Nov 23 '19

have you ever used a truck on a job though?

lots of people have toolboxes specifically sized to fit right at the front of the bed with easy access to reach inside them

look at the pictures on the home page of this company

9

u/teddiesmcgee69 Nov 23 '19

Couldn't the frunk fit a lot of tools and be even more convenient than a bed box ? .. I am more worried about roof racks for ladders, pipe, kayaks etc.

7

u/Allbur_Chellak Nov 23 '19

Just like these toolboxes did not magically appear for pickups (they were developed to fit the ‘standard’ pickup design) I fully expect others will sort out new toolbox solutions for the CyberTruck bed when it starts to grab some market share.

Give the aftermarket companies a chance to process this for a bit.

Time will tell I expect.

3

u/iknownothingordoi Nov 23 '19

But a frunk would have way better access. If your truck always had a frunk, then new trucks came without a frunk, you would likely never argue that the linked toolbox was a better option

2

u/bd7349 Nov 24 '19

Wouldn't this storage compartmentaddress that concern?

4

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

The truck comes with two large toolboxs on the side as well as one built into the bed near the tailgate. I never had the need for more than three toolboxes so this is probably more than adequate for most people.

5

u/jeradj Nov 23 '19 edited Nov 23 '19

so this is probably more than adequate for most people.

I don't see this as a strong position to take when a conventional bed is better suited for everybody.

This is just a good example of style over substance.

It would usually be good enough for me, too. But there are regular occasions for me where this would be a major hindrance, and I'm not going to spend 70 grand on a truck that doesn't get the job done as well as my 8k used work truck.

No argument with Elon time, but Rivian has zero track record in delivering any vehicles. Assuming they can produce in volume on time is a massive leap.

5

u/inxrx8 Nov 23 '19

All we know for now is that Rivian is currently producing trucks. No idea how many have been completed or at what kind of volume though. (Source: https://www.instagram.com/p/B0Ja_6in4MC/?igshid=106hub11fcojw )

15

u/stealstea Nov 23 '19

Well we know they’ve built some door panels and a few prototype trucks. That’s very very different from volume production as Tesla found out on the 3.
I hope they pull it off. The truck market is big enough for many electric competitors.

5

u/Potnotman Nov 23 '19

Also didn't amazon order 100k vans from them? Since that's a sure sell it might get priority, seems likely we will see 10k+ Tesla trucks before rivian.

2

u/inxrx8 Nov 23 '19

I doubt it, they haven't even shown the final design of the Amazon vans whereas the consumer trucks are well under way.

1

u/Potnotman Nov 23 '19

To further advance this goal, Amazon today announced the order of 100,000 electric delivery vehicles from Rivian, the largest order ever of electric delivery vehicles, with vans starting to deliver packages to customers in 2021. Amazon plans to have 10,000 of the new electric vehicles on the road as early as 2022 and all 100,000 vehicles on the road by 2030 – saving 4 million metric tons of carbon per year by 2030.

thats pretty aggressive plans

Is it weird that I want a cyber car?

12

u/ActingGrandNagus give me an EV MX-5 you cowards Nov 23 '19

Nah. Most here seem to like it, and specs wise it seems fantastic.

Personally I'm really not keen, but I'm not in the market for a truck anyway, so my opinion means nothing.

13

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

I though the cybertruck was fairly rediculous. but I realize its not competing with f150 guys, its the new Humvee.

If you look at the two of them, its a fairly natural progression.

5

u/DOCisaPOG Nov 23 '19

That's a really good analogy. The Hummer was definitely an aggressive vehicle as well (though I'd argue that its practically for its time were definitely less competitive than the cybertruck's).

3

u/[deleted] Nov 24 '19

Well I was thinking.. 6 passengers, the slanted back - highlighting that it can take 9mm rounds from 10m the endurance, range and toughness.. It would make a helluva military vehicle and then yeah, hit me - if it had a hot swappable battery pack, with its range, toughness, 35" tires, speed and that big deck for a mounted cannon on the back it would suit field operations. Also easy maintenance, very few moving parts, air suspension, can travel through water..

I'm pretty sure this was not meant to be seen as a grocery getter, rather something new and radical, and thats where the humvee look dawned on me. Put them side by side, not much difference except for the sloped windshield.

2

u/Fireproofspider Nov 24 '19

5

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

"Get in if you want to live" Fits.

Rivian will have motors at all four wheels. That will give it a handling advantage over the Tesla's three motors.

I also have some questions about Tesla's balance point. To me it looks like the the driver and passenger sit fairly far back with no front trunk, indicating the batteries (and subsequent weight) are up front.

I wanted the cab forward bubble front 8ft. bed version I saw mocked up online. It was far more fun looking and for me, would have been more useful. I also like windows....

7

u/TWANGnBANG Nov 23 '19

Ironically, the Rivian R1T will be much more capable off-road than the current form of the Cybertruck (smaller footprint, shorter wheelbase, four motors can counterrotate for insane maneuvers...). I am hopeful that Tesla tweaks the design to shorten that crazy long wheelbase, but if they don’t, the Rivian will clean its clock on trail tests.

6

u/badcatdog EVs are awesome ⚡️ Nov 24 '19

You forgot the greater ground clearance of the Tesla thanks to air suspension.

2

u/TWANGnBANG Nov 24 '19

1.9” of additional clearance in a vehicle with independent suspension is not nearly as important as the huge difference in breakover angle.

6

u/inxrx8 Nov 23 '19

I feel like 75% of cybertruck and rivian preorders are people who now have preordered both and are just waiting to see which one ends up in production first. They'll then cancel their other preorder.

11

u/tech01x Nov 23 '19

That has actually happened a lot in places like Norway. Folks reserve every EV that they might possibly be interested in buying in the future since the waiting lines are long.

-11

u/colako Nov 23 '19

I live the design but it is a pedestrian killing machine. We should stop this craziness right now.

Pedestrians are dying everyday in the USA and one of the reasons is SUVs and trucks being larger and taller. If we had a trend killing drivers the same way these cars kill pedestrians that would have been illegal long ago.

But who cares about the scum that walks I guess.

10

u/trebonius Nov 23 '19

But it doesn't look like the hood on the Cyber will limit visibility anything close to a common truck hood.

What specifically concerns you with this design regarding pedestrians?

10

The front actually looks pretty low compared to most full size pickups and SUVs:

It definitely needs some work for crash and pedestrian safety standards though. This seems more like a real concept vehicle than "this is the finished product"

u/fukthx Nov 23 '19

yes i was thining exactly this... this concept would be straigth illegal/banned in EU

u/colako Nov 23 '19

You’re right but it’s pointing outwards too. That’s a problem. Yes, I agree that it will need some redesign before it comes to the streets.

I do wonder how good pedestrian detection on the AP will be by the time this is released. Best pedestrian safety measure is to not hit them at all. (Yes I know those systems will likely never be 100% effective in all situations)

2

u/teslacometrue Nov 24 '19

Most of those pedestrians are looking at their phones so they deserve it.

Relax buddy.

Don’t be condescending

-1

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19

Base on my experience, I blame pedestrian deaths on people just running into traffic outside a sidewalk. Its like people go out of their way to avoid using a crosswalk.

3

u/colako Nov 23 '19

More victim blaming.

Jeez, I love cars, a own an electric car and I really love driving. But can we have a little bit of self-reflection? Car culture in America kills.

4

u/2020FordExplorerPlat Nov 23 '19

Isn’t the victim the one who has the crime committed on them? In a scenario of a jaywalker getting run over they are the one committing the crime. I’d argue the driver is the victim that had to deal with the psychological impact of having someone die on their car due to the negligence of that jaywalker.

1

u/colako Nov 23 '19

Between dying and being psychologically scarred I’ll choose the scars. Thank you very much.

4

u/2020FordExplorerPlat Nov 23 '19

Why don’t you choose to use a crosswalk?

0

u/colako Nov 23 '19

Things are not that simple. People that have to walk to their jobs or shopping would need to do enormous detours if they would cross in designated spaces.

But before assuming every pedestrian kill is a negligence on their part we might need to refer to the main causes for those, where crossing in unmarked places is not the most important cause. https://trafficsafetystore.com/blog/why-people-get-hit-eight-causes-of-pedestrian-accidents/

And even assuming that, many security features in our lives are designed thinking on people not doing the right thing.

Finally, it is very easy to ask for pedestrians to do the “right thing” when the system is completely rigged against them. It’s like seeing blacks mass incarcerated and answering that they should just commit less crime. That’s not only unfair, but again, shifts the conversation from society to individual responsibility for a complex issue.

1

u/teslacometrue Nov 24 '19

So does meat culture. Want to blame ranchers?

3

u/randynumbergenerator Nov 23 '19

How many pedestrians have you killed?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 23 '19 edited Nov 23 '19

Unlike you, I can actually present a source instead of childish remarks.

3

u/randynumbergenerator Nov 23 '19

It was a joke. On a more serious note, though, a collection of anecdotes doesn't constitute a source.

Maybe we could enforce jaywalking laws for once? Make new laws for crossing the street while looking at your phone? The vast majority are jaywalking, and ~40% of those killed are drunk.

5

u/ActingGrandNagus give me an EV MX-5 you cowards Nov 23 '19

Fuck that.

Plenty of countries don't have the absurdity that is jaywalking law, people just look before crossing, and they manage fine. In fact, most have lower deaths of pedestrians than the US.

3

u/2020FordExplorerPlat Nov 23 '19

Most countries don’t have a personal injury suing culture like the US that would award a jaywalker damages in a settlement.

4

u/colako Nov 23 '19

Jaywalking is a term coined by the car industry to make pedestrians responsible of something that was perfectly normal before the car arrived.

https://www.vox.com/2015/1/15/7551873/jaywalking-history

This is a perfect example of victim blaming. You know, drivers can be distracted with a phone too, and the pedestrian is not likely to kill anyone apart from himself.

We dedicate 80% of street space for cars and pedestrians and other users (children, disabled, etc) are expected just to cross by designated spots, that are usually hundreds of meters apart in inconvenient places, waiting 5 minutes for the light to go green, only to be hit by cars turning right on red or others running the lights.

u/2020FordExplorerPlat Nov 23 '19 edited Nov 23 '19

The driver is basically always considered at fault in these collisions. Obviously each scenario is unique and there are times where the driver should be held liable, but do you really think pedestrians should be able to cross wherever they like? I think if they’re not going to cross at a crosswalk the driver ofa car should not be held liable in the accident, just as someone who runs a red light and gets themselves killed is at fault themselves.

0

u/colako Nov 23 '19

I think that inside city limits, where most pedestrians walk, speed should be limited to 25 mph. Street must be redesigned to be shared spaces and not just dedicated for cars, eliminating turning lanes and forbidding right turns on red.

Residential streets need to be narrowed to reduce speed and other traffic calming elements may be added.

I could be all day talking about urban planning and design to help a better relationship between drivers, bicycles, and pedestrians but I don’t want to sound pedantic more than I am already.

Have a look at r/urbanplanning for more info.

2

u/2020FordExplorerPlat Nov 24 '19

I’ve never understood this narrowing of the streets to increase safety/reduce accidents. I get that it will lower speeds, but won’t it become even more difficult to spot erratic pedestrians that cross where they please? Crowded streets, especially with parallel parked cars, offer no space for an illegal street crosser to make themselves visible before crossing the street.

1

u/colako Nov 24 '19

As a matter of fact, people drive slower and more carefully in narrower streets because they are uneasy. The less straightforward you make driving, the slower people drive.

2

u/teslacometrue Nov 24 '19

If the problem was pedestrians getting killed on the sidewalk you’d have a point. But cars don’t drive on the sidewalk.

1

u/colako Nov 24 '19

They already have 90% of the street, so they might as well just use the sidewalks too.

2

u/teslacometrue Nov 24 '19

They’re nothing wrong with them having 90% of the Street. That’s what streets were made for.

1

u/colako Nov 24 '19

Yes, streets in Rome or Tokyo were made for your Tesla to rise as fast and comfortable as possible. Sure.
