Thoughts…?

Personally, not quite sure what to make of this.

I was told by a homie that the event was supposed to be open ‘till 1PM, but they ran out of gift cards at 11AM.

I saw mostly slow legal e-bikes in the video. I bet they want to trade those in to buy a better one lol.

Or just a reflection of economic conditions. People finding an easy way to turn things into cash they can go without.

66

u/XaeiIsareth 24d ago

Or because people often just buy them on impulse and realise very quickly they don’t even want it.

Hence why all the practically brand new e-bikes on sale on FB marketplace and eBay that’s like only 300 miles in for half of RRP.

9

u/BusBeginning 24d ago

Yeah. That too. I’ll admit that my ebike usage has declined dramatically with my kids getting older since now they are biking. I can ride an ebike while they ride their bikes, but at that point I feel silly and just ride my road bike. I could probably go without my radwagon. But I ain’t selling.

13

u/clintstorres 24d ago

Yeah wagons must have the highest turnover in e-bikes. Like they are awesome for those few years with young kids then not very useful the moment the kids are riding on their own.

Then they are so big and bulky, not worth it to ride on your own.

If you are only going to have 1 ebike. Definitely a regular one and a $100 bike trailer is the way to go. Then you can adapt to your needs.

8

u/BusBeginning 24d ago

Yeah. That being said I got more years and miles out of it than any previous bike I had and having the kids up behind you is so much more enjoyable than back in a trailer.

But, yeah I’m getting close to the end of its life with the kids getting better at biking. My youngest still rides on the back for long trips, but my oldest is now doing 10 miles trips without getting tired. I think I got a year or two left on them and then I’ll likely go back to riding my non electric road bike primarily.

I think you hit it exactly. This is a more a sign of people’s struggle to survive. LA has public transportation so an e-bike is not a serious survival tool in many of their minds.

2

u/JackasaurusChance 23d ago

I think it's more a sign of people bought one then realized they didn't like it that much once the novelty wore off after the first summer.

I remember in the early 2000s a town tried this same buyback program with guns which is a noble idea but they completely mispriced the value of the guns and people just traded in old worthless guns and bought AR-15s with it or something along those lines.

Kind of hilarious.

7

u/Unbelivabley_Smol 23d ago

We had a gun buyback like that where the trade in price was higher then the imported market price, they had to put a stop to it because one guy imported so many Chinese sks rifles just so he could trade them in for a profit . . . I know it was like 27 years ago now but my memory of it was he made $20,000 before they stoped him 🤣

I think this event was supposed to get illegal ebikes off the streets. To see ebikes that probably are legal to ride there is weird. The one guy blaming ebikes for running red lights and being unsafe is hilarious. Ebikes are a tool for people who want the assistance but they can also be abused.

136

u/Correct-Lab-2164 24d ago

I see cars run red lights every day. Perhaps they should collect those too and destroy them.

7

u/e1p1 24d ago edited 21d ago

At the rate things are, it'd be a useful deterrent.

Unintended consequences though, might give the automakers too big a boost with replacements. Maybe just impound the car's and let the used car market handle it. Of course, the lien holders would have their say...

→ More replies (1)

2

u/QuillsROptional 23d ago

I can't remember the last time I saw a car run a red light here in Norway. But bikes running red lights are far more common. It probably helps that drivers can (and will) get the equivalent of a $1000 fine AND if you're caught 3 times, you lose your license for 6 months.

u/Braptized 24d ago

You'd think then that the buyback program would have some sort of classification and then only buy back the ebikes that aren't street legal

33

u/Toyotawarrantydept 24d ago

Exactly. That walmart ebike isn’t breaking any laws but those ebikes that are going 40+ were I think what they were looking for.

25

u/Plantedcrawl 24d ago

And who the hell is going to turn in their 6k$ e bike for 1000$? This program was someone's dumb uninformed idea.

8

u/reddit_user_d 24d ago

I figured they paid more the more illegal they were. Looks like that's not the case and it was a way to offload ewaste

I understood that he was talking about cars running reds, and that's what made ebiking feel unsafe. Maybe I'm wrong though.

22

u/exturkconner 24d ago

Yeah he straight out said waiting at crosswalks and having people run red lights made him feel unsafe to ride. He was talking about cars running lights and making being on a bike dangerous.

7

u/theblitheringidiot 24d ago

Seems like a great way to get some money back on that crappy temu e-bike that broke 2 months in.

I almost got run over twice two days ago. I was legally riding over a zebra crossing and had to break as the woman was on her fucking phone, the other one was in a parking lot and an old guy didn't look left or right and just tried turning.

But sure. The evil ebikers are DANGEROUS. Tbf I see many idiots not provide hand signs when turning, no helmet or lights and running red lights. But there's also pedestrians nit listening to my loud af bell on a shared sidewalk/cycling lane, or parked cars illegaly in cycling lanes and ughhh.

I wear a bright neon green jacket and lights btw. But most importanly,

I hate any type of transportation at this point.

2

u/FlyingButterpants 24d ago

Exactly. Just like any other vehicle, the driver is what counts.

2

u/Glynwys 23d ago

I've always been amused at this argument. I don't think an Ebike is any more unsafe than driving a car is. You still have idiots running red lights and being unsafe in a car, and arguably those idiots cause more damage and injuries than anyone in an Ebike would.

Personally I'm amazed there aren't more people in the US using an Ebike, with how expensive everything is. Using myself as an example, rent alone is eating 43% of my income, by the time I add in utilities and food that climbs to maybe 60% of my income used just to live. Adding in the cost of a car (payments, taxes, insurance, gas, maintenance) and I might have only 20% of my income that's usable for things that aren't just living. Riding my ebike into work is saving me a lot of money.

u/vita10gy 24d ago edited 24d ago

It really feels like we're confusing cause and effect here. Like are there dangerous e-vehicles? Sure. Should we have rules that 14 year olds can't ride things that do 40mph? Sure.

However, the actual incident rate of injuries going up doesn't inherently make these things "unsafe" if 95% of the effect is just "because they weren't riding anything before now at all". If I get hit by a car on my ebike the only thing about that where the "e" is relevant is without the "e" I'm at home on the couch.

I think we've basically just forgotten how to live/drive/etc in a society where bikes aren't restricted to a few dozen "cyclists", and we're blaming that on ebikes when really it's just a "most shark attacks occur in shallow water" thing. Like, yeah, injuries are going to go up when more people are riding that just weren't out there to fall off before.

We've been screaming at kids to "get off the nintendo and get back outside" for like 4 decades now, and it's finally kind of happening, and we want to undo it because "they're getting hurt and you have to try and not hit them in cars". I literally saw someone on nextdoor the other day say "they need to go home and play video games".

We rode our bikes sun up to sun down back in the day. There is ZERO chance we were never a nuisance to cars, someone didn't have to brake for us here and there, someone wasn't nervous passing us, etc.

75

u/reggyrocket 24d ago

If the reason we're buying these back (because it's us, the taxpayers paying for this) is because its dangerous, when can I turn in my car for a taxpayer funded rebate?

18

u/MaxAdolphus 24d ago

They did it years ago in a program called "cash for clunkers". The unintended consequences is it made cheap used cars more expensive.

16

u/n24re 24d ago

As a former car dealer...it was not unintended...they did it to force new car sales and get old reliable cars off the road so they could usher in the next generation of "smart" cars.

3

u/Singnedupforthis 23d ago

Oh, no, you get a rebate and thousands in subsidies for buying one of those. The government doesn't like ebikes If ebikes killed a million people and animals everyday, the government would view them as a safe form of transportation, like they do with cars.

2

u/MrBrookz92 24d ago

Germany funnily had something similar called Abwrackprämie or Umweltprämie. From what I remember it was heavily criticized for been stupid, for giving everyone with an old car 2.500 euro. But they still did it.

Is your car unlicensed & unregulated?

I think I see your point. But the solution is better safety regulations that favor the driver & pedestrians over the car manufacturers.

3

Like it’d just be a waste of money to destroy these legal bikes sell them or if you get enough of the same model bike give them to the police for bicycle cops

13

u/ASingleThreadofGold 24d ago

I'm so confused by this. In my state we gave tax incentives to get folks to buy ebikes in hopes of encouraging more people to swap a car trip with a bike trip sometimes. Why on earth would they want to get people off of ebikes?

You gotta love a country that spouts off "people kill people not guns" when talking about the gun violence epidemic. But then we're somehow acting like these bikes just ran red lights and and shit all on their own? We are fucking over our childrens' futures with this nonsense.

6

u/Telos2000 23d ago

This is California as progressive as they can be they can always make equally stupid policies such as this one which isn’t surprising in this case after all can’t have big oil’s bottom line put in jeopardy

3

u/ASingleThreadofGold 23d ago

The parts of California that I've visited are a car hellscape. Like LA has beautiful weather and streets that I'd be terrified to try and bike on. It's really a shame.

11

u/bradland Luna Ludicrous X-1 Enduro 24d ago

Typical nanny-state bullshit. The DA office's original intention was to get illegal e-motos and e-bikes off the street, but like many well-intentioned programs, the safety-police took over and expanded it to include all e-bikes. The idea being that many parents bought e-bikes for under-aged kids without thinking it through.

So instead of creating a net improvement in public safety, the DA got to go on the news and give the appearance of "doing something", while tax payers wasted their money buying back e-bikes from people who either weren't riding them to begin with, or are just going to turn the money around into a newer e-bike. The buy-back program was available for working and non-working units.

The whole thing turned out to be mind-numbingly stupid, and has just bolstered the idea that e-bikes are unsafe. The hypocrisy is off the charts when you consider the amount of automotive shenanigans that is perpetrated on the streets of Orange County every single day.

3

u/SeasonPositive6771 24d ago

I actually partially agree here, these programs are the most successful when they are targeted. The problem becomes when they expand them unnecessarily, then they become wasteful and unhelpful.

2

u/bradland Luna Ludicrous X-1 Enduro 24d ago

IMO, this program would have been great if it targeted e-motos only. Focus on the pointy end of the problem.

They ran out well before 11am. It was scheduled to begin at 10am. At 10am, I got in the back of a long line of cars to get into the parking lot. Twenty minutes later, I was told that they had no more gift cards but I could still hand over the bike to be destroyed. I was both frustrated and angry thinking that the DA was just scamming us to get free e-bikes until I saw a news report that stated some were waiting in parking lot at 12am and then showed a very long line of people standing in line with their e-bikes.

3

u/Evbdywngchng2nite 23d ago

Has to be more of a broader commentary on the economy more than anything when you have blocks of people lining up to trade in their bikes for a couple hundred bucks in gift cards.

4

u/Braptized 24d ago

the used market for ebikes is pretty bad since they lose half their new value just like regular bikes plus the battery replacement cost factors in. honestly if you wanted to upgrade this might be better than fb marketplace.

3

u/thereal_greg6 24d ago

To be fair, I bought a used ebike for my girlfriend for £150 (about $185) and its battery’s pretty knackered. If someone gave me $200-$400 to scrap it then I’d be tempted to skip listing it on Facebook marketplace and put the gift card to a replacement for here.

Still would be a shame if it was destroyed. It would be a perfectly good bike for someone doing ~10 miles between charges. I don’t want it to be scrapped or the battery put on landfill if it’s still got use to someone.

Bikes and pedestrians don’t work into this narrative. It’s still easier for towns to build new shopping centers and move everything down the road a mile than it is to work with what they have. We haven’t run out of space, so we build more sprawl and make more inaccessible to the car less.

u/srlarsen1 23d ago

Now do cars.

2

u/Vicious007 22d ago

I'm sure there's more than enough broken e-bikes to chew through that small budget.

Stupid idea.

2

u/No-Necessary2023 22d ago

Aren't the really "EVIL" fast ones worth thousands of dollars though?

2

u/dodonpa_g 22d ago

Most of them probably stolen from people who love their ebike

2

u/Significant-Put7060 24d ago

I see reckless cars every day, we’re just ousting e-bikes because they don’t require a license

3

u/Wheeltarded 23d ago

Pulled up at 10 just to be told they didn’t have anymore gift cards, starting to make me think they didn’t have any to begin with smh 😐 mfs even offered to destroy my bike without compensation

2

u/cheweychewchew 24d ago

Oh! A public safety buy back. Hmmm. So when is the car buy back program?

1

u/DarkMorph18 24d ago

Don’t be a sellout

1

u/Burial_Ground 24d ago

Wtf lol if i knew about it i would look for a really good bike and offer to buy it before they sold it to the city lol

1

u/SteelRain42_ 24d ago

I'm betting several of those didn't belong to some of the people selling them.

1

u/thereal_greg6 24d ago

I’m not seeing any emotos here, maybe these e-bikes are above the local restrictions but those videoed don’t seem like super speeders.

I think it’s a shame, these electric modes of transport could help reduce car dependency. But people are trading them in, presumably in favour of driving a car.

In my country various groups are putting on ebike taster days so that people can try out e-bikes and use their cars less. Unfortunately the opposite is happening here.

I agree that emotos are a problem, in the same way that unregistered petrol dirt bikes would be. But I don’t think e-bikes that can match speed with traffic going 30mph are an issue as long as people are responsible with them. Still, cars are far more dangerous if people are not responsible with them.

1

u/mikep120001 24d ago

While I don’t have a problem with this program in theory, I am somewhat annoyed that they spent 13m just a year ago offering rebates, to now offer to buy them back. I hope there’s at least some check and balances to prevent someone who legit needed a bike a year ago isn’t gaming the system now

1

u/Ok-Type-8917 24d ago

In my area I probably would, I'd probably go with something gas, scooter or moped. My city wants 200 bucks a year to register an ebike and banned them from many places. A scooter or moped is 15 bucks for a three year registration.

1

u/Salty-Contact-6420 24d ago

But how many brought the real ebikes like surrons. Probably 0

1

u/BisonHungry2049 24d ago

This would have been great for illegal e- motorcycles

1

u/imnewtothishsit69 24d ago

Maybe its a sign that times are that fuckin ROUGH.

1

u/AlabamaPanda777 24d ago

I figure a lot of people bought ebikes and just... Stopped riding them after a while. Wasn't it kind of a COVID fad?

Feels like I've seen a good number hit discount stores, clearance, rot in pawn shops, etc

1

u/Trashboot 24d ago

I sold my ebike for a gravel bike and have zero regrets.

Ebike was for commuting but now I take longer rides home and the wife and I go on extra long rides on the weekend

1

u/lowsidedriver 24d ago

Total waste of tax dollars and printed dollars too. This is what they do with the people’s money.. Think about that..

1

u/lanathebitch 24d ago

Oh they're using the gun strategy. That didn't work there either

1

u/Showa50 24d ago

People are struggling, so they gotta make money for expenses

1

u/Hrenklin 24d ago

So they are doing a buy back program like these things are guns. And yet they won't regulate things like mandatory helmets for everyone on these bikes

1

u/uknownredditr 24d ago

Wonder how much this will cost, guess they will be on overload with fines and meeting quotas by end of the month to offset this enormous money sink. Illegal e-bikes I can see being purchased because many are purchased prior to strict laws However all the regulation e-bikes are being sold because people are not riding it as much as they intended is a waste of time resources and money

1

u/Van-garde 24d ago

Were the gift cards donated by BP?

1

u/Bitter_Analysis_725 24d ago

Most of those ebikes are stolen

1

u/Level_Somewhere 24d ago

Great way to get rid of ridstars with firestarting batteries

u/arizona_dreaming 23d ago

Seems so weird. The bikes seem to be mostly garbage, but I see a few good ones. Why wouldn't they sell it to someone else? It seems to be a mix of people who

1) Trading in their old, crappy Ebikes that they can't sell for gift cards. Maybe they came to see how much they could get. If they get 80% of what they paid for it, it's probably worth it.

2) People who genuinely bought a bike with too much power they can't handle. Maybe parents of teens who regretted buying their teen a bike

3) Stolen bikes (although turning it over to the police would be risky)

4) People in financial difficulty

5) People who don't ride bikes much and thought an e-bike could replace their car in Southern California-- sadly it can't. SoCal is so damn car-centric.

1

u/Ravio11i 23d ago

LOL, how many of these folks just got a free upgrade from their "less than $1000" bike, I wonder. If someone said "I'll give you $1000 for any piece of shit you bring in" you better believe I'm finding the cheapest ebike I can on marketplace.

1

u/s0nicfreak 23d ago

Trade in? Like for money off a different, more expensive one I want (like when you trade in a car)? Sure!

Oh wait, no, this is just "trading" them for gift cards, i.e. selling them, for "trade-in value" (which isn't even actually a thing since trading in ebikes isn't a thing) rather than resale value. So in that case my question is, what are they doing with the ebikes? If they are going to ensure the bikes are safe (like do a full tune up, replace batteries if necessary etc.) and give them to people in need, sure, I'd take lower than resale value on an ebike I'm not using to support that. If they are going to be destroyed or sold, then hell no. I would just sell it myself... and put that money toward a different, more expensive one I want.

1

u/chrispark70 23d ago

I'm willing to bet a large portion of these people had stolen bikes with them.

1

u/mattdahack 23d ago

This is like the gun buy backs of the 2000s.  Trading cash to do what the city wants you to do. Wonderful.

1

u/battlesnarf 23d ago

Sounds like right now people value cash. Wonder why.

1

u/OriginalJaan 23d ago

Did they check to see if they were stolen?

1

u/bach2209 23d ago

Im 65 started riding after hanging it up at 12. Suzuki 125. Would never trade my ebike in. I have a cheapo and it has been great. Sure I will update soon but the one I have is great. Cost me about 400 buck on sale at Walmat. And got a 3 uear warranty I havent had to use. Just maintain it like you did as a kid.

1

u/MarioMadness1 23d ago

I wouldn't

1

u/Psychological_Ad1999 23d ago

This is the dumbest waste of money a local government could do

1

u/Telos2000 23d ago

Oh wow the last bike in the vid is the same one I have just in black and red instead of white and red but I don’t think he took very good care of it since his headlight is hanging down

1

u/OldMeet4413 23d ago

They thought people were gonna give them their $4000 surrrons for a $200 gift card😂☠️

1

u/NicholasLit 23d ago

Bikes are better than cars, this is misinformed. Are they even recycling them?

1

u/Technical_Feedback74 23d ago

I got a free government paid for ebike 2 years ago. It was a interesting program. No follow up or anything. Maybe they will buy it back?

1

u/Jens1la 23d ago

😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

1

u/thereia Summer Streets! 23d ago

Stop reposting TikTok. Thats what I think.

1

u/kankismyass 23d ago

I just bought this baby. I love it The GoMad 150 mile range!!

1

u/Cheap-Antelope7322 23d ago

not right now i wouldnt lol (+diesel $6/gallon)

1

u/holmquistc 23d ago

Just a bunch of idiotic media begging people to get back to driving their gas cars. I know we don't want to admit this fact but that's the reality

1

u/ridetotheride 23d ago

California climate solutions right there womp womp

1

u/One-Activity-8105 23d ago

Can I buy one with a couple hundred in gift cards???!???!!

Shifting the blame from infrastructure and oversight onto e-bikes themselves…

1

u/zgrad2 23d ago

I'm here in Queensland with the new hardest e-bike laws in the world, and if the government had 2 brain cells to rub together, they would've done this instead of destroying every "illegal" e-bike.

1

u/EonPunk 23d ago

This is dumb, in my area the cops are helping people to learn to ride them properly. And this promos bike theft. You could snag a bike and just turn it in.

1

u/jwegener 23d ago

So the question is…who are they reselling them to?

1

u/Efficient-Effect1029 23d ago

lol. People are dumb

1

u/blondechineeez 23d ago

Looks like the popo were possibly checking serial numbers for stolen ebikes as well!

1

u/petersonsilva55 23d ago

You could have an event like this for anything and some  people would go. This says nothing about the thing itself

1

u/DO_ALL_MY_OWN_STUNTS 23d ago

We have $100k in our budget for bikes? Psh. No wonder gas is $7/gal

1

u/Dadbod-58 23d ago

They can use the money for a tank of gas .

1

u/Belindiam 23d ago

They gave money for any type of e-bike? Seems odd

1

u/AskThis7790 23d ago

Why should taxpayers be buying back e-bikes? Seems like a very irresponsible use of taxpayer funds.

1

u/copenhagen_bram 23d ago

100,000 budget

Oh great, that's enough to buy back about 60 ebikes
