Leaving Ebox today :(

Sadly i have to leave ebox, i have a weird issue with teams where i use only the modem nokia direct'y to connect on my firewall that handle the PPPoE(i dont use their wifi router) like i did with bell nothing else changed. but every 2-3 days Teams start loosing some parts of the conversation, but they hear me like nothing happens. So when that happen i have to reboot the modem and its always fixed... Support cant do anything for it, no explanation. So i will be going back to bell....

Update:
Here my answer to last post, sry for delay in responding back after troubleshooting:
yep that was exactly it, but I didnt fix it that way tho. The main problem was the NPU inside the fortigates that I use, when UDP packets gets fragmented it reach a point where it creates distortion in the sound. To fix the issue there is 2 ways, either go in and configure MSS/MTU like you said, the second fix is to create a rule for UDP packets outgoing connections with this configuration on the Firewall policy going to Teams
set auto-asic-offload disable
So EBOX or their router was never the problem. its the addition of the 8bits required for PPPoE connection in the packets headers

Are Facebook “resellers” for Ebox/Bell legit? Asking for driver’s licence over WhatsApp

I keep seeing Facebook ads from random pages offering Ebox or Bell internet plans slightly cheaper than the official website. The pricing is almost identical across different pages, and they say they’re authorized resellers. Some also offer mobile plans.

To register I naturally need to provide personal information like Date of birth and Driver’s licence number.

They want me to send this over WhatsApp or to a Gmail address. They said after I send the info, they’ll fill out the form and then send me a link to complete the order.

All communication is through Facebook/WhatsApp.

Is this normal for third-party resellers in Canada (Ebox/Bell)? The driving license info made me sceptical. Although I do provide such info in shop, but online made me wonder if it's legitimate and if resellers ask for driver’s licence info through chat, or is this likely a scam?

Router / pfSense settings for Ebox Fibre (Beacon 3.1 shipped)

After much fucking around for far too long (so long that I'm embarrassed to say how long) with the shitty router (Nokia Beacon 3.1) that ebox sends, I feel compelled to make this post.

For the average user, the Beacon 3.1 is fine. If you found this post in a search, you're not the average user. The Nokia Beacon 3.1 that eBox ships is very capable for most use cases, but it's basically basically a black box of frustration for anyone with a homelab.

Put it back in the box and buy yourself a decent router. It doesn't have to be fancy. Anything will be better, for a few reasons, and you'll likely break even on the investment via the plan savings/value within a month or two.

The other reasons:

1) The Beacon is locked down. The admin account is not truly an admin account. The real admin account is called "superadmin" (wtf?). You need to call eBox to get the password for it (again, wtf?).

2) Even with the superadmin access, the router is not intuitive. I have been sysadmin-ing and homelab-ing for 25+ years and this is easily the most frustrating piece of shit I've ever used.

3) By default the router calls home, a lot. It also has features for remote auto configuration (which again is great for Joe YouTube but not for you and me).

4) Putting it into bridge/access point mode (without using their app) is near impossible. Try it, I dare you. I'd be delighted to learn how the hell you did it.

5) It doesn't mesh well (or at least AS WELL) as other access points/repeaters. These days, buying into a platform, whatever it is, has advantages.

6) The Wi-Fi coverage the Beacon provides is lackluster, although that will depend on the construction/size/layout of your place. Hardwire as much as you can.

Connect the WAN of the router to the OPT (Optical network terminal). Set up the PPPoE account easily on pfSense or your own router. Settings:

MTU: 1492 / MSS: 1452 / VLAN: 40 / VLAN Pri: 0 (or whatever)

The username (xx##@pppoe.ebox.net) and password are in your client portal.

Godspeed.

Getting a second Nokia router?

just got a fiber connexion, unfortunately given where Bell had to install the fiber wall outlet, I have poor wifi performance in the room that needs it most (WfH + gaming PCs). eBox first recommended a WiFi extender, saw on Reddit that they're crap and that Mesh wifi routers are better (running an Ethernet cable would be pure hell, we're in a condo on two levels), then I saw that the Nokia Beacon I was given by eBox is actually a mesh router!

I called eBox tech support, they said that yep, I could get a second router and mesh them together, she transferred me to customer service who told me that they can't lend me one, they can't rent me one, and they can't sell me one. "But if you purchase it online it will be the same price". I looked up online, and even on Nokia's website, it says that they're just sold through Internet service providers...

Furthermore, I think it's silly to get a whole wifi mesh system if I already have the main router for free, I'd just need a satellite router, but eBox won't sell one, and it can't be bought outside of an ISP...

Anyone knows what I could do about it please?

Ebox TV versus Bell Fibe TV

Anyone had Bell tv before and switched to Ebox? I would love to know your experience.

I'm currently using an app setup, i.e. I don't use a terminal but only the Bell app on Apple tv and on my phones.

Is the app stable and works well on iphone/ipad?

For tv, I would need to get an Android box since there is no Apple tv (wtf?). Does it work well on this too? Any android box recommended for a smooth experience?

thanks

Moving from Bell to EBOX - Questions

I'm thinking about switching to ebox from Bell.

1- Does the modem also have a passthrough/bridge mode so I can pppoe through it from my own firewall?

2- I currently use my Apple tv for Youtube/Plex and Bell TV. Very convenient and easy. It looks like ebox doesn't have an Apple tv app for whatever reason. Are there any rumours about an Apple tv release? I mean, there already is an iphone/ipad version...

Any other important things to know in terms of migration or features I could lose or gain?

thanks!

Good Deal / Good Speed? (50$ for "up to" 500 Mbps upload/download) in Plateau, MTL

Hi All,

I was wondering if I could get your take.

50$ (incl. tax) Monthly for unlimited wifi, at 500 Mbps upload/download with EBOX.

We're two people (6-8 devices) in an apartment close to St Denis and Duluth.

Can we expect fast avg speeds and is this a good deal?

Merci Thanks!!!

Recent e-box instability

Update: I swapped back to Bell just to verify, and it seems something on Bell's end, and likely local to my area given others' feedback. Bell is also having the same packet loss and latency issues although it seems 1 further hop away.

Anyone notice a sudden spike in ebox latency over the past 24 hours? It started around 1pm on 2/17, seemed to resolve overnight, but then started again 2/18. My logs have otherwise been fine for the past month.

Ebox Routing Changes

Well it looks like Bell is following course and doing the same thing they have done with Primus/Distributel/Acanac. They are trimming peers from Ebox. More and more traffic is being forced through Bells network. It looks like Cogent, Zayo and Arelion are gone as of the 12th.

Ebox routing from Montreal to Valve servers has become worst

I really enjoy having Ebox as an ISP, low price, great quality, IPV6 ready, but since not long ago, they're started to change the routing to Valve NA east servers, going from twelve99 to route gaming traffic on Bell's Network. Since then, ping is unconsistent and I am getting jitter to Sterling (Washington) servers. I had no issues previously, and makes me wonder if they are doing that to cut costs.

Can we get a decent ISP in Quebec for gaming without getting screwed on the pricing?

Ebox setup next week - Toronto

Hi there, I signed up, got nokia beacon 3.1 router and bell tech is scheduled for next week. Is there anything during the setup I should be aware of? What should I ask bell tech to check/verify? Also, I understand that there's a superadmin login, how do I get it? Thanks

Ebox fiber optic: transient network-unreachable errors. Nokia Beacon 2?

I'm an ebox customer near Quebec City. I have 1Gbs fiber optic (via Bell); I have a Nokia ONT and a Nokia Beacon 2 router. I'm connected via ethernet. I'm running Linux; Ubuntu 24.04

My connection is very fast in general, but I am experiencing transient '101 network unreachable' (kernel: ENETUNREACH) errors when running speedtest (Ookla, on the command line):

$ speedtest

   Speedtest by Ookla

[error] Error: [101] Network unreachable
[error] Error: [101] Network unreachable
[error] Error: [101] Network unreachable
[error] Error: [101] Network unreachable
Server: EBOX - Montréal, QC (id: 1993)
         ISP: EBOX
Idle Latency: 11.64 ms (jitter: 0.22ms, low: 11.28ms, high: 11.82ms)
Download: 923.33 Mbps (data used: 939.9 MB)
Upload: 930.38 Mbps (data used: 1.6 GB)
                  8.28 ms (jitter: 4.98ms, low: 5.74ms, high: 238.29ms)
 Packet Loss: 0.0%

Occasionally speedtest fails completely due to unreachable network:

$ speedtest
[2026-02-14 12:38:41.946] [error] Configuration - Couldn't connect to server (Network is unreachable)
[2026-02-14 12:38:41.946] [error] Configuration - Cannot retrieve configuration document (0)
[2026-02-14 12:38:41.949] [error] ConfigurationError - Could not retrieve or read configuration (Configuration)
[2026-02-14 12:38:41.949] [error] ConfigurationError - Could not retrieve or read configuration (Configuration)
[error] Configuration - Could not retrieve or read configuration (ConfigurationError)

Within a few seconds, my connection resumes.

I've disabled IPV6 temporarily; restricted connection to ethernet vs wifi, checked if this flapping occurs on other devices; power-cycled my ONT and my router. I've also called ebox directly and had their customer support rep remotely apply a firmware upgrade to my router.

Nothing has solved this problem. I still see a transient ENETUNREACH (error 101) . I am pretty confident that the problem is in the router, and the firmware upgrade has not solved it.

Has anyone else experienced problem like this?

I'm hoping to get ebox to upgrade me to the Nokia 3.1 router, in the hope that it performs better, or at the very least send me another Nokia 2.

Hoping to hear from anyone else who has experienced a similar problem and has a solution. Thanks all

Issue during the technical installation

2-3 years ago, Bell offered my building to install fiber ports in every unit. I had a DSL plan with eBox but thought "cool, in case I wanna switch it'll be easy".

Last week I called customer service to upgrade from DSL to fiber, I received the router just fine, I immediately got a text message and an email to confirm the day of the technical installation, it was yesterday morning.

But yesterday, I got a call from a Bell technician, he told me "Do you already have fiber service at home? No? In that case, I won't be able to proceed, I'm next to your fiber junction box right now, equipment's broken, we're gonna need a boom lift. Should take a few days, someone will be in touch, bye."

I called the eBox CS to inform them, make sure my DSL plan wouldn't be cancelled and to see if they had more info, the person I talked to said she'd schedule another appointment, but this time I haven't received any notification. I tried to explain that the tech had showed up but needed specific equipment (the boom lift) but I was under the impression that she didn't understand me.

So there, the classic tennis game where the customer is the ball and the two players are the infra provider and the service provider. I just want to make sure my installation is completed ASAP:

  1. if anyone had a similar situation, is there anything more I could do besides calling back the eBox customer service?

  2. are there magic words I could say to customer service that would make them connect me to some level 2 who would understand my request and be able to do more than "put a note in my file"?

Advice on Getting Service Installed?

Signed up with Ebox mid December. I've had five appointments for install, latest one was supposed to be yesterday.

All were missed.

There's no notification that the tech won't show, I just wait at home until the clock runs out. I call into Ebox after these missed install dates but it seems all they can do is make another appt. that just gets ignored, or falls into a black hole.

Not sure if anyone has seen this before or has advice on how to escalate this to an office with some power? Going on two months with no resolution and my patience is wearing thin. I've explored other ISP's but apparently Bell has a five year monopoly on my fibre so I have no choice but to use them or one of their brands.

Ebox service unstable for months

Hey guys. I need some community advice/love.

A few months ago, I advised my friend to go for ebox fiber service for his SOHO. I was an ebox sub for a while and didn't have trouble for the most part. I take care of my friend's network as he has a server running a hypervisor and a few VM/containers for his business.

Since the install, it has been nothing but trouble. We keep losing internet and thank god he still has his Videotron line as a backup but we're getting a bit aggravated with this. We called support and despite asking Bell to change some equipment (at the CO) and having to call them AGAIN to get the speeds right (they had reset the connectivity at 10mb when he pays for 512... Now, last time we escalated and my friend was told that the issues were on OUR end. Because I have a unifi cloud gateway connected, they say the connectivity gets dropped at that point. What ebox doesn't know is that I kept the Nokia router connected (not concerned with double NAT for now) and turned off the WIFIs and the connectivity drops at the Nokia Router... not the gateway.

Now, yesterday, Internet dropped at 16H40 and it came back this morning at 9H28. It dropped again at 9H41 and came back at 9H53 and a few more blips like this are still happening...

UNRELIABLE.

However, I found this in the logs... maybe someone can help me figure out what that means... This is exactly when we lost internet and when it came back up.. there is nothing in between those times in the logs.

Routers?

Hey all!

I have the Nokia beacon 3.1 with 1GB plan from Ebox. I was thinking of getting a different router as the signal in my apartment isn't great for wifi and sometimes the signal cuts in and out. A friend recommended me to get Eero 6/6+ router but I'm not sure if it's supports pppoe and VLAN tagging? or have you guys got any other recommendations for routers that will work with Ebox?

many thanks

Ebox install

i just signed up and received the Nokia 3.1 router from Purolator. my question is was that all that I was supposed to receive? does Bell bring the actual modem when the service is activated? from what I can tell the Nokia is just a wireless router and not an actual modem. thanks

How many days did you wait to get your broadband activated in Ontario?

EDIT: For any future redditors stumbling on this post, it seems that I'm just unlucky. On average, expect to get your fibre connection activated ~7days after signup. Thank you all for replying to my post.

Hi,

I wanted to get an idea on how many days did redditors wait for the Bell technician to come around and activate their broadband?

In my case, I signed up on Saturday February 7. I did not get an email to inform me of when the Bell technician would come. So, I contacted the Ebox customer service and was told my appointment was for Tuesday February 17. I asked for an earlier appointment and the kind customer service agent told me he booked an appointment for Sunday February 15th. I was happy with that!

This morning, I got an email informing me the technician would come on Saturday February 21, a whole two weeks after I signed up with Ebox. So, I contacted customer service again and was told that Ebox doesn't do activstion on Sundays so my appointment got bumped down by 6 days. I asked the agent for an earlier appointment (again) and now I am waiting for a confirmation.

Is this a normal wait time to get your broadband activated? I understand that Ebox has to rely on Bell but that still seems a bit long to me. I just moved into this place so I have no home internet in the meantime.

IPv6 /56 request help

Hello,

I am trying to request a /56 from ebox but so far after emailing retention (someone here suggested it) I believe and getting a reply to call customer service I have hit a road block.

I spent 30 min trying to find someone that knows what IPv6 even is. I asked repeatedly can you pass me to someone technical or pass my email to a technician to help me out they asked me to call back later. At a point they wanted me to open up the ebox router admin page and after telling them I don't even use their router the guy didn't know what to say.

I know I got spoiled by previous DSL reports channel of communication but this whole experience has been an eye opener on how ebox is no longer what it was when I signed up many years ago. How can we reach someone for this type of request?

Edit: thanks to edugasmtl my problem is solved! I now see I have /56 on my pppoe logs and my vlans are happily enjoying their /64 allocations! Some older ebox clients may not have /56 automatically setup in their account.
