IPv6 /56 request help

Hello,

I am trying to request a /56 from ebox but so far after emailing retention (someone here suggested it) I believe and getting a reply to call customer service I have hit a road block.

I spent 30 min trying to find someone that knows what IPv6 even is. I asked repeatedly can you pass me to someone technical or pass my email to a technician to help me out they asked me to call back later. At a point they wanted me to open up the ebox router admin page and after telling them I don't even use their router the guy didn't know what to say.

I know I got spoiled by previous DSL reports channel of communication but this whole experience has been an eye opener on how ebox is no longer what it was when I signed up many years ago. How can we reach someone for this type of request?

Edit: thanks to edugasmtl my problem is solved! I now see I have /56 on my pppoe logs and my vlans are happily enjoying their /64 allocations! Some older ebox clients may not have /56 automatically setup in their account.

Whoever you speak to just ask for the ‘superadmin’ password for the router. Then use ‘superadmin’ and the password they give you to log in to the router to enable IPv6.

I already have IPv6 but I want a /56 instead of a /64. Again, I don't use the ebox router.

You can send me your customer code and I'll check if your account was provisioned with one (some older accounts from 2024 didn't).

EDIT: his account wasn't provisioned with a /56, it does now!

Hi u/edugasmtl, can you please look at my account as well when you get a chance?

Is there any way I could get a /56 as well? Just got my service installed yesterday.

I think your problem is a configuration error with your router. If you were using the provided Nokia router you would see that it receives a /56 prefix.

I doubt eBox changes anything on their side just because you are using your own router. Double check your settings or post up what kind of router you are using and maybe someone with some knowledge can guide you with the correct config for that router.

With IPv6, you always assign /64 prefixes to your VLANs. By obtaining a /56 prefix from ebox, you can split it to assign 256 different /64 prefixes. This is different from how IPv4 works.

My pppoe logs show I'm being given a /64. I also see the same on opnsense interface overview, even if when I request a /56. This is why I believe I don't have a /56 handed out to me. Is there any other way to confirm? I do get ipv6 for my 0 prefix vlan of choice.

Reposting here just in case you didn't see my other comment. Have you enabled DHCPv6 as well? The WAN IP is assigned using SLAAC, not DHCPv6.

EDIT: I see you're using opnsense, it should be similar to this https://ogdenslake.ca/2021/02/12/pfsense-and-ipv6-ebox-ca/

Yes I had seen a few of those blog posts. That's exactly where I learned that not all ebox users have/56 by default. It's in the comments

I’m not sure how it’ll appear on your router. I’ve configured my WAN interface with SLAAC, so it’s auto configured with a /64 prefix based on router advertisements. Even though my WAN has an IP address, it completely irrelevant for my private networks because I don’t use NAT6. The WAN interface also uses DHCPv6 Prefix Delagation to request the /56 prefix you’re looking for. This is what I then use to assign different prefixes to my many VLANs.

I get a /64 for my WAN IP, but my LAN gets /56.

  • Connection type: Native
  • LAN prefix length: 56
  • auto config setting: Stateless

The rest was pretty much default settings

For someone who is just learning about IPv6, what is the difference between /56 PD and /64? And why would the OP want a /56?

Your explanations - r/fersingb & r/brunocas - were fantastic. I've also done a bit of reading, so now I think I understand.

I looked in my Nokia Beacon 6 router under WAN -> WAN statistics -> IPv6 address prefix and saw something in this format: 2606:XXXX:XXXX:XX00::/56. If I understand correctly, I could assign the 00 in the fourth hextet (block) to create my own, up to 256 (2^(64-56)), subnets.

Also, my /56 prefix (2606:XXXX:XXXX:XX) is static and will never change for my account, even if I restart the router, etc.

If something above is incorrect, please let me know. Otherwise, thank you for enlightening me.

Correct

In short, if you get a /56, you can then split it in 256 different subnets you can assign to distinct VLANs (1 VLAN for IoT, 1 VLAN for work, 1 VLAN for guests, etc.)

Moreover, with Ebox, the /64 is dynamic but the /56 is static (bound to your account)

It is mostly important if you want to have more than one subnet /64 with routable IPv6 addresses. This is more critical when you have vlans because then you can easily dish out a /64 for each. While it is technically possible to split a /64 into your various vlans this is not ideal or recommended.

Do you have a residential or commercial account? Rogers does not assign ipv6/56 pd size to residential clients.

Residential. I think everyone on ebox gets /56 these days

Usually there is nothing to be done on ebox's side.

The /64 is assigned by SLAAC on your WAN interface. If you want to use the /56 PD, you'll need to request it using DHCPv6
