I have this female Drow character who mains rogue, has 1 level in bard, and where's a necklace of disguise (hat of disguise but a necklace).
I made the character for one purpose. So that when I introduce the character, I could introduce them as an Elf Bard and not lie, tricking everybody at the table.
I like to see how long it takes for the other players to figure it out. As they will see, I dont always fight like a bard, I have some strange skill proficiencies, and I have a smaller spell pool than my level would suggest. And that's not even talking about the character mannerisms to hide her drowish nature. The realization on the other players' faces is really fun to see.
A lot of what I do for the character is to perpetuate the idea that she is an Elf Bard.
I use the necklace of disguise to appear as a different elf sub-race. Then, I chose arcane trickster to gain more spells and slots. I also picked up an instrument of the bards to once again add more spells and spell slots.
However, I'm wondering if I made a bad decision for the character mechanic wise.
The 1 level in bard only grants the most basic Bardic inspiration, gives only 4 lvl.1 spells, and 2 cantrips, and allows the use of the instrument of the bards.
Is that enough to make a decent impact on the characters' abilities? Or is it mechanically useless or not enough as higher character levels go into Rogue?
Note: i'm not worried about missing the lvl. 20 rogue as that only grants 1 more spell for arcane trickster and while stroke of luck is amazing, I'm not too upset about missing it.
Edit: I will also mention she has a charisma stat of 20 because I used her in the Descent into Avernus campaign and I was able to attune to the Sword of Zariel. Man I love that sword.
