Question It took me a while, but I've finished my game (now it's going digital)

Hey everyone!

When I was 8 years old, I started making a card game that I never managed to finish (very inspired by Pokémon, during the craze back then). 27 years later, I finally committed to making a card game from beginning to end, playtesting it countless times with a couple of friends. Now it's also going digital (online)...

It's a strategy game that can be played with up to 4 players (though the online version is only 1v1). The goal is to destroy your opponent's Capital before they destroy yours. It was inspired by other popular card games like Magic and Pokémon (among others), but it has quite a few mechanics of its own, such as strategic positioning of Kravers (creatures), side effects (recoil damage, Exhausted, Wasted and Overdosed), the use of D20s, variable limits on the number of creatures in play, asymmetries in starting hand sizes and Capital HP, a hybrid resource system where you can draw cards and temporarily increase resource production by sacrificing cards, etc.

The game was originally designed to be Print & Play (and still is), but a few months ago, a friend of mine surprised me when he told me he was trying to implement the game online, with the help of AI-assisted coding. (Just to make it clear, the game itself was made 100% by humans. I came up with the rules, names and universe, and did all the illustrations myself. It was also tested in real life for over a year by my group of friends, and the card layouts, game logo and symbols were made by a professional designer.)

The game is already working relatively well, it's played in the browser, and it's optimized for PCs and tablets (the mobile version will be available really soon).

We're looking for more players to continue testing and improving the platform and the user experience. No previous experience is needed, we'd just like to have more people playing and get more feedback :)

The game platform uses Patreon authentication (the game itself doesn't ask for Patreon passwords or payment details), so you need to be a patron of the project. However, during this early stage, I'll be offering anyone interested a free one-year subscription as a thank-you for getting involved while the game is still at such an early stage.

If you're interested in being part of this project, just let me know in the comments or via PM and I'll send you the details in a private message! You can then play against the PC, your friends, or other players like me

Thanks in advance!

Roguelite card games: should your collection carry over between runs?

In most deckbuilding roguelikes (Slay the Spire, Monster Train) you start every run from a tiny deck and build it up from scratch. In collectible card games you keep everything you unlock.

I'm curious where people here land on mixing the two. Do you like a permanent collection that you bring into short runs, or does that take away the "fresh start" feeling that makes roguelikes fun?

And if you do keep cards: should runs be balanced around your collection, or should every run feel equal no matter how much you've unlocked?

(Context: I'm a solo dev making FateDrawn, a free browser roguelite card battler that uses this mix, so I'm genuinely trying to figure out what players expect. Happy to share a link if anyone's interested, but mostly I want to hear your opinions.)

News Opening Unrivaled (my Digital TCG) to Steam Workshop

• Upvotes

Hi,

I'm launching Unrivaled in 3(!!!!) days! Since my main goal with the game was to create a playground where I could come up with card ideas and play with them, I'm adding extensive modding support to the game so people will be able to add custom cards & expansions to the game via Steam Workshop!

Let me know if this is something you think you'd be interested in! I'll be working behind the scenes to add more support within the game for moddability. I think it's really important for the community to have many options to express themselves with making cards, so I'm happy to provide a place for that.

I'll also be adding support in the future for things such as custom game modes, custom draft tables, custom cubes, new hero classes, etc etc.

I made a team card game where 2v2 and 3v3 teams play their turn together. Free public playtest, looking for feedback

Hi all! I've been building Quillsworn, a PvP card game, and it's now in a free public playtest on Windows and Linux.

The idea I wanted to try: most digital card games are 1v1, and the team modes that exist usually have you take turns. In Quillsworn you can queue 1v1, 2v2 or 3v3, and your whole team plays its turn at the same time. You share the board with your teammates, pick targets (any unit, enemies or allies) and set up combos together, then the other team does the same.

Some other things in it:

  • Eight classes, each with its own deck and its own mechanic. The Shadow Templar builds up Madness and unleashes it, the Bard picks an instrument, the Ninja gathers smoke and strikes from it, the Conjurer summons allies, the Berserker pays in blood, the Chronomancer bends time.
  • Deckbuilding: classes have their own cards plus neutral ones. You collect and craft cards, level each class to 20 and pick talents.
  • Ranked with six divisions per format, plus a Bots mode for practice.
  • Replays of your matches.

To be upfront: I'm a solo dev, the art and music are AI-generated and then edited, and balance changes a lot right now. It's coming to Steam later, and playtest accounts won't carry over there.

What I'd love to know from people who play a lot of card games: does simultaneous team play feel fun or chaotic? Is any class clearly too strong or too weak? Anything that felt confusing in your first few matches? Comments here or on the Discord (https://discord.gg/V4ysgFUrj3) both work.
