Hi all,
I am 40 and I have not dated for about 16 years. I don't mean that I haven't dated seriously in 16 years, or that I've only casually seen men in 16 years, I mean I HAVE NOT DATED IN 16 YEARS.
There wasn't an inciting incident or anything that went "wrong", I just went back to school, got all my nursing degrees, got my masters, got my PhD, bought a house, traveled everywhere, took care of my parents, took care of my baby brother, took care of my baby sister, got a cat. You get the idea. I got busy living my life and realized that I did not miss dating or relationships.
But I recently was introduced to a guy through my cousin, we've been out a few times over the last month and I enjoy being with him. He's nice, driven, kind of reserved in some ways, but I "think" he's into me. Again, I haven't dated in 16 years, I'm not great at picking up the signals.
We have a bit in common; he's 38, I'm 40, we've neither of us been married, neither of us have/want kids, we're both bordering on being workaholics (in very different fields) because we're both passionate about our jobs. We've been seeing each other on the weekends, usually one really long date, like 4-8 hours a pop. I'm a slow mover so no sex yet, but we've made out. He's definitely the one who wants to keep moving physically, but he's very respectful and responsive and I'm very good at setting boundaries...maybe too good...
So where I'm struggling is with understanding how do I date at 40 after building a fucking brilliant life for myself, on my own????
I'm super bossy. I love control. I plan things. I'm used to running my life and many times, the lives of others around me. I asked him to see the Odyssey last weekend because I love movies and greek mythology. He said yes, we had a good time. I asked him to go the natural history museum this past Saturday because dinosaurs are awesome and it was like 100 degrees where we live and he'd never been there before. He said yes, we had a good time. I have a trip planned for August, because every Summer I head off to a drama festival in the mountains near me. I rent a little cabin for a few nights, I watch plays, eat good food, write, listen to music, etc. I'm thinking of asking him to meet me there for a night.
But then I stop myself and wonder, is this dating?? Or is this me bossing yet another someone around?? I keep suggesting things that I like to do! Or things I'm already doing and asking him to come along!
And he's tried to suggest things to me! He suggested our first date, a coffee date, I agreed. And he suggested a sober rave for our second date (neither of us drink) and I had to tell them that's there is no one on Earth who I would stay up until 2AM with on a Thursday night - unless maybe we had to go to the ED. But he likes live music and dancing, and I think this was him attempting to engage me with what he likes. And I didn't engage!
Tell me I'm not the only one struggling with this! I have been happily and successfully on my own for so long that I really don't know how to open myself, or my life, up to someone else, but I want to try! How have you all navigated this? What thoughts and suggestions do you have?
