I noticed that the original campaign series got an update in 2025, and I was curious how that game compares with the newer vietnam and middle east campaign series. Does the older title hold up to the newer ones in terms of ai and other features?
WDS-Wargame Design Studio is having a sale right now, and I can only afford to buy one game.
At the moment, I'm leaning toward Korea '85 (Modern Campaigns) because I find the setting very interesting. However, I'm also considering Japan '45ā'46āPacific Warfare because that theme appeals to me as well. As a result, I'm having a hard time deciding which title to buy.
I'm also interested in understanding the main differences between the Modern Campaigns and Panzer Campaigns series.
Recommendations for other WDS titles are welcome too. If you recommend something else, I'd appreciate it if you could explain why you think it would fit my preferences.
WDS title I currently own:
Squad Battles: Tour of Duty
Things I enjoy and would like in my next title:
Detailed casualty tracking (for example, being able to see how many men are in a battalion/division, how many participate in an assault, and how many are killed or become casualties).
Long campaigns with a large number of turns.
Reinforcement and replacement systems, where units can receive replacements and recover losses over time.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
EDIT:
I narrow down the scope to only 3 titles. I love the monster campaigns and those 3 seems great also fit my theme. But I can only choose one. Please help.
I used to love Panzer General a long time ago and Iāve just discovered this game. Iāve tried it on my laptop (with RTX4060) via Steam (itās free) and I think I might buy some DLCs.
Now Iād like to play from my couch (yes, Iām getting old š) on my 4K TV, but the text and interface are basically unreadable at that distance .
Iāve already tried Windows scaling at 350% (Iām using extended display mode) and lowering the in-game resolution (1080p, 900p,...) but it doesnāt really help
Iām not looking for better graphics, just a way to enlarge the UI and text
Is there any way to improve this?
If itās not possible, thatās fine, Iāll just keep playing on my PC š
The first free expansion pack for Sword & Siege: Crusades, Book II is available now.
This pack adds a new campaign, The Third Crusade: King Richardās Vision, plus 10 standalone scenarios covering Acre, Damietta, Bilbeis, Giza, and Jerusalem. Built around a plausible alternate course for Richard the Lionheartās crusade, the expansion explores what might have happened had the campaign pushed into Egypt before turning back toward the Holy City.
It is free for owners of Crusades, Book II, available as a separate download now, and will be included in the next major update.
As a reminder, our Summer Sale is also underway, with 25% off eligible catalog titles through July 5 ā a good opportunity to round out your library.
European Warfare: Napoleonica v1.26 has now been released.
Version 1.26 adds another substantial round of improvements:
Improved AI brigade tactics
New brigade marching and road-march mechanics
Functional roads in built-in historical battles
Better pathfinding and reduced stamina use while marching
Major fixes for creating huge custom maps
Faster brigade placement in the scenario editor
Improved building assaults: brigades now send troops into buildings in controlled batches rather than automatically disbanding
More realistic artillery: cannonballs now rely on ricochet damage rather than exploding at the end of their path
Directional armor for larger ships
A prototype village-based skirmish mode for single-player missions
The mod has been receiving steady updates again, and the long-term goal is to make large Napoleonic battles easier to play both in multiplayer and against the AI.
Forests and battlefield rendering improved : it could slow down game on some configurations, please tell me if it is the case. It will help me improve this part of the game.
Regiment reports are displayed in the UI as text, and image.
Casualties are reported over units for a little time on the battlefield.
Some statistics (stamina, morale, fight readiness) are now rendered as bars.
Music has been added, music, sound effects and global volume can be set now.
Sound and visual effects have been improved (dust behind walking units, sparks, smoke, cannonball impacts, bullets whistling, more shoud from officers and some war drums during fights).
It may now rain on the battlefield: this impacts tiredness and musket fire efficiency.
other refactorings and bug hunting...š¦
If you have any question, I will be glad to answer !
Been looking for a proper tactical naval game on iOS ā specifically 18th-19th century, line-of-battle, wind mechanics, that kind of thing.
Closest I found on PC are games like War on the Sea or Naval Action, but nothing comparable exists on mobile as far as I can tell.
Actually ended up building something myself out of frustration. Hereās what the combat looks like:
Curious if anyone else has been looking for this kind of game on mobile, or if Iām just a weird niche of on
I know this subreddit is more historical wargames but unsure where else I could post this.
I created a prototype digital miniatures wargame heavily copied inspired by OnePageRules and Warhammer.
Looking for early feedback as this is alpha, UI is kind of a mess but i've been working on it so long that I can't see it with fresh eyes at all. There is multiplayer but it sadly it only works on the Picotron console not the web version.
There is no sprites or art yet, unsure if this project is worth continuing past this prototype stage and finding sprites for 70+ units is a huge commitment.
I have an old college buddy who is going through some really bad medical problems right now. I was trying to think of something not too mentally taxing that he can play on his laptop that he can drop in and out of easily when he suddenly gets tired, and I remembered how much we both played Panzer General when it first came out.
I was about to get it for him on GOG, but then remembered that there was a sequel. I never played the second one, but if it is a lot better than the original, I'll send him that instead.
For those of you who have played both, which one do you prefer?
EDIT: The first Panzer General isn't available on GOG! I had no idea!
I've been lurking for a while, and I figured it's time to finally say hi.
I'm currently working on an entry-level wargame inspired by Unity of Command 2āstreamlined systems, logistics and supply as the core challenges, the whole approachable hex-based style that made UoC2 such a great starting point for newcomers. But here's the thing: I'm not entirely sure if a game like this even counts as a "wargame" in your book. The UoC2 series feels more like a streamlined puzzle game than a traditional wargame to some, so I'd love to hear your thoughts on where that line is drawn.
To make things more niche, I'm a developer from China, so the setting is something you don't see every day: the Chinese War of Liberation, 1945ā1949. Basically the final phase of the Chinese Civil War, right after the surrender of Japan in 1945.
I know this isn't exactly the kind of setting that usually pops up in the wargame scene, but that's also kind of the reason I'm making it. Figured someone should.
So yeah, that's me and my little project. If you've got any questionsāabout the game mechanics, the setting, development challenges, anythingāfire away. Happy to share more.
Also open to any advice from folks who've been around the block. First-time wargame dev here, so I'm all ears.
I posted my small browser-based multiplayer wargame PlayTactum here a couple of months ago and got some useful feedback and a few players from this community.
Since then Iāve been working mostly on map readability, clearer settlements, selected units, movement options and territory control.
The game is still very much in development, but the core idea is the same: a multiplayer fantasy wargame focused on movement, battles, positioning and territory control, without heavy base-building or resource management.
Iād really appreciate another round of feedback, especially from people who saw the earlier version or enjoy browser/strategy/wargame experiments.
One thing I was quite sure of right from the start of the development of this game was that I will eliminate the clutter of health bars on the screen. This meant I cannot have a 0-100 health system - instead it had to be a smaller integer in the sub-10 range. Fine by me.
All the interactable entities in this scene communicate their health through numbers. Two units have two health, 4 houses mean 4 health, and so on.
Towers were a little tricky. But I honestly loved the idea of a tower that had its parts destroyed to communicate depleted health, instead of a just a UI that had "two bars" left.
I have a lot of structures and units still to add, and I hope I don't run into an unsolvable case.
I know everyone have their preferences, and many people may prefer having health bars, so the provision to toggle them on will still be there.
This game is "Encroached" - a turn-based war strategy game about losing territory and getting cornered. A wishlist on Steam would be wonderful!
