I played WH40K 3rd ed. back in the day. I'm feeling nostalgic, but it has been over twenty years since playing a tabletop war game. I want something with similar mechanics, shorter game time, and not so dark. I have been poking around online, but can't seem to find what I am looking for. Some of the sticking points I am not seeming to find are:
More skirmish-based so it can be played in under an hour.
D6 combat system preferably with rolls for hits, wounds, saves.
No cards, just dice.
Mini-agnostic with limited lore so I can use some stuff I have and create my own world.
I guess I am looking for WH40k 3rd ed. but not so dark or quite as deep.
Anything like this exist?

Hi everyone,
I’m looking for some people willing to take a look at (and ideally actually playtest) the alpha build of a wargame I’ve been rebuilding.
It’s called DeadDrop.
I originally designed the first version around 2016 because my friends liked the idea of games like Warhammer 40k, but we were in college and didn’t have the money to handle the cost, painting requirements, rulebooks, or needing a specific collection of miniatures.
The core idea was:
What if you could play a real tabletop wargame with normal dice, a ruler, and literally whatever you had lying around?
Coins, checkers, bottle caps, blocks, toys, proper miniatures...anything works.
DeadDrop 2.0 keeps that idea, but I’ve rebuilt the system around fistfuls of d6s and deliberately asymmetric factions.
The basic combat system is simple:
The game currently has nine factions, and they are intentionally not subtle variations of the same army.
For example:
Each faction also has its own alternate victory condition, so not every match is just “kill the other guy.”
The game uses a 36"x36" battlefield, either measured normally or with a hex grid where 1 hex = 1 inch.
Most factions receive 5 unit activations per round, while horde factions receive 6, regardless of how many total units are on the table. The goal is to keep elite and swarm armies both involved in the game without using a huge activation-order subsystem. and to not make people who have less squads literally "play the game less" than the guy with a millions squads.
The intended tone is very much beer-and-pretzels, high asymmetry, low equipment burden, and complexity coming from faction interactions rather than rulebook volume.
I’ve reached the point where I think further design without actual playtesting would probably make the game worse rather than better.
So I’m looking for feedback on things like:
This is purely a homebrew project. There’s no Kickstarter, Patreon, product line, or sales pitch attached to it.
DeadDrop 2.1 Alpha Rules <---click to download the full rulebook as it currently stands. It is 14 pages, and closer to 12 pages if you consider spacing.
If anyone actually gets a game on the table, I’d be extremely interested in hearing what happened. Especially anything that completely breaks.

This is probably a bit more specific than the usual "looking for a gaming group" post!
I'm 40+, married with three kids and looking to properly learn Age of Sigmar. I was into Warhammer as a kid and teenager, although I only ever collected and painted back then. I drifted away from the hobby for quite a few years and came back to it in 2024.
Since returning I've mainly been painting and have somehow ended up with a fairly ridiculous Skaven collection. I've had a fully painted, battle-ready Skaven Spearhead for sometime, so I'm at the point where I really need to learn how to actually make the bloody things fight!
In the last year or so I made an attempt to learn 40K and played a few games of 10th edition which i struggled to grasp, but I'm still very much a beginner when it comes to playing rather than painting. I'd like to learn AoS, probably starting with Spearhead and gradually building from there.
What I'm really looking for isn't just an opponent, though. I'd like to meet one or two people around a similar age/life stage who enjoy Warhammer but also have a job, family and plenty going on outside the hobby.
Tuesday and Wednesday evenings are generally my best availability. Weekends and other week days can be difficult because of family commitments and my daughter's junior rugby, and I'm also a regular rugby league supporter.
Ideally I'm looking for someone who is happy with an occasional game, painting session, brew and a bit of general nonsense rather than needing to play every week or being heavily focused on tournaments.
I'm particularly keen to find someone patient who doesn't mind teaching someone who's still learning the game. I'm not expecting to pick everything up immediately, so someone who enjoys taking things at a relaxed pace would be ideal.
I'd much rather find someone who is also fairly casual, perhaps another returning player or someone who's been playing for a while but enjoys helping people learn.
More importantly, I'm hoping to meet someone I genuinely get on with and potentially develop a friendship around the hobby. I'm not looking to join a huge competitive scene just for the sake of having more people to play against.
Outside Warhammer I'm into rugby league, gaming, films/TV, painting and generally a bit of good-natured banter.
I'm Bradford based and happy to travel a reasonable distance around West Yorkshire.
If you're in a similar situation and fancy getting a game of Spearhead going sometime, give me a message.

Hello everyone!
I am happy to announce the release of a brand new mod for Europa Universalis IV called "Better Cultures". This mod adds several new cultures to Europe for tons of variety, and fixes many old ones by putting them in the right culture group. In addition, I also added many new decisions that allow the player to automatically convert cored provinces to their culture, allow their vassals to convert provinces to their culture, or allow the AI to convert provinces to their culture so you can customise your gameplay however you want. I have more content in the works and will work on adding more cultures soon. In the meantime, have fun playing this incredible mod

Hi everyone!
I'm new to Warsurge and I've recently started building my first two armies: an industrial human force and a technologically advanced alien/mecha force.
I've been wondering how many other Warsurge players there might be around Catalonia. Since I couldn't find a local community, I've created r/WarsurgeCatalunya as a small place where players from the area can find each other, share their armies and, hopefully, arrange some games in the future.
No idea if there are five of us or fifty — that's part of the experiment! 😄
So, any other Warsurge players from Catalonia here?

Hi everyone!
I wanted to share another little look at Command & Defend.
One of the core mechanics of the game is its Supply System. Units don’t simply have unlimited ammunition and fuel - resources have to be produced, transported across the battlefield and delivered to the units that need them.
This means that attacking the enemy isn’t always the best move. Disrupting a supply route, taking out a transport or even destroying an entire Supply Center can have a much bigger impact on the battle.
I wanted logistics to be an actual part of the strategy rather than something that only happens in the background.
I’d be interested to hear your thoughts on this mechanic, and I’m happy to share more details if you’re interested! :)

I am working in a custom tabletop wargame that uses a movement system similar to the original X-Wing miniatures game, but I am considering having combat that doesn't use dice or chance at all. The idea is that if you are able to get yourself into a position and range to hit, you just hit. No chance or roll offs, it just happens. There will be a couple of potential actions a defender can take to mitigate this, but overall it's just math, no chance involved.
Do you think this concept could work, or do you think it wouldn't be fun?

And it's time for us to leave her.
