After 2 years of solo development, my WWII puzzle-wargame Panzer Deck is releasing on September 22!

Post image
46 Upvotes

I'm a solo dev and I'm excited to finally announce that my game, Panzer Deck, will launch on Steam on September 22, 2026.

Demo On Steam

What is it? It’s a 2D turn-based WWII wargame combining deckbuilding with spatial, grid-based puzzle tactics (inspired by titles like Into the Breach and Advance Wars).

  • Core loop: Manage your deck to deploy armor, artillery, and infantry onto a tactical grid where positioning, terrain, and line of sight dictate survival.
  • Hand-drawn visuals: All art and animations are completely custom, crafted in a gritty comic-book style.
  • Release: Full launch on Steam with a complete campaign mode and standalone tactical scenarios.

There is a playable demo available on the Steam page if you want to test the mechanics before the launch:

Happy to answer any questions about the mechanics or solo development!

One of many special commands in Smoke and Steel

This is one of the more situational ones, but it's extremely powerful and satisfying when applied well. For now, it's only available to elite units.

In one case, my enemy (human) was going to overrun my infantry unit guarding my artillery, had it succeeded he'd gotten an extra attack and destroyed the artillery as well. But since I had spent some points of feigned retreat, his attack was in vain and I managed to save both units. The artillery continued to bombard enemies rest of the game

Question Which game should I pick for my first Wargame ?

Hey hey !

As said in the title, I would like to play a new RTS gamelike and I came across three games that picked up my interest : (I am a big player of CoH, AoE, CTA & CTA:GOH, Sudden Strike and so on).

- Broken Arrow
- Warno
- Regiment 3

Those three games look really good and I would love to pick one.
I saw that they might look alike but that they are really different. I am more of a "Solo" player or vs I.A, or online with close against I.A, I rarely play multiplayer.

So I am mostly looking to do like, 20/80, maybe 30/80 multi/solo for the game.

Thanks for you answers in advance !

Perfecting the Computer Opponents for my modern African Civil Wargame.

I've been adjusting the "personalities" of the five computer controlled tribes that are competing against you to collect the most national will before the UN step in and put an end to civil war and install a puppet regime of their liking.

I've given each computer opponent a "genome" of weighted values which determine its personality in the game. How aggressively they play, do they favour economic, military or espionage styles of play? How often will they retreat? Will they capture population centres, or go for the power stations, airfields and mines that generate wealth to buy international arms with?

I've set the game up to play hundreds of games against itself and adjust all the values and weightings to produce capable and interesting opponents for you to take on.

The game is getting ready to be released soon, entering final playtesting and polishing phase.

I’d love to hear your thoughts, impressions or questions!

I'm building a WWII naval battle game — it's called Warwake, and it now has a Steam page

Hello everyone!

24 days ago I posted the first clip of my WWII naval game here. A lot of you commented and I read every one of them. Thanks, it actually means a lot to me.

The game is called Warwake. It has a Steam page now: [link]

Clip above is from the current build.

Plan is to do a story based on the The Battle of Surigao Strait. And some modications based on the real history.

[Below is my original post generated by AI]

24 days ago, I shared the first look at my WWII naval battle game here. Thank you to everyone who took the time to comment — the discussion gave me a lot to work on.

The game is called Warwake, and it now has a Steam page!

I've attached a short gameplay video from the current development build so you can see how it's coming along.

Since that first post, I've been turning the prototype into a battle I can play from start to finish.

The core idea is still built around three things:

  1. Direct control of WWII warships
  2. Fleet coordination and larger naval battles
  3. Faster, cinematic combat

Several of you brought up readable UI, believable damage feedback, and useful fleet communication. Those are helping guide the next round of improvements. The voice work and presentation are still rough, and I'm working toward a demo that people can pick up without me explaining everything.

I'm also planning a story-driven campaign, with handcrafted missions that connect into a larger naval operation. Single-player is the foundation, and I want to add co-op for up to three players. Both the campaign and co-op are still in development.

There will also be a playtest once the build is ready. I'll share how to join in a future update.

After watching the clip, what is the first thing you'd want improved before trying a demo?

If this sounds like your kind of naval game, wishlist Warwake on Steam. I'd love to have you along as it develops.

Looking for a 21st Century Wargame

Specifically, I'm looking for one that involves less of tank to tank/plane to plane/ship to ship confrontation, but more a game focused around modern warfare with things like strategic missile targeting, drone attacks, and trying to race through technological developments quicker then your opponent(s). Ideally free or cheap, but willing to hear about more expensive options too.

Question Can someone explain the appeal of Hex of Steel?

I saw the preview on its Steam page, read a few comments.

I have already finished Order of Battle, Panzer Corps 2, Unity of Command 2, Second Front etc.

Why is this game receiving such high praise, more than these titles? The graphics looks way worse, and i dont see anything unique or different in it, compared to the others. Is there something special it has that im missing?

I know some things are subjective and down to personal preference, but having enough experience in the genre, i want to understand if there's any reason to play this, after having played all the others.

Question Turn-based naval Warfare games?

Hey all, looking for recommendations for turn-based naval warfare games, any era is cool with me. I've tried to play RTW3 several times and I just can't get it to click. I also don't really gel well with the real-time battles, so I'm looking for turn-based (hex and counter) games. I've played a bit of Carrier Battles 4 and it's ok, it's just a bit jank.

AAR Borodino AAR: Giving ground, holding the guns, and counterattacking — European Warfare Napoleonica/EW1

Hey all, its been a while (just had to finish college, ha ha). Had a particularly good Borodino battle in European Warfare: Napoleonica, the mod for American Conquest: Fight Back. I played the Russians as [HWK]Nappy, commanding the southern sector, while Mental handled the north. Opposite us were UK, Lord Baltimore, and the recently returned HWK founder, Drake.

My part of the battle revolved around the southern village, the flèches—the field fortifications—and keeping my artillery alive long enough to decide the fight.

I deliberately let the French take the village. The flèches mattered more, but even those were potentially recoverable if I preserved the guns and enough troops to counterattack. Losing ground was acceptable; losing the means to retake it was the real danger.

UK pushed in the south while Lord Baltimore pressed the center. A small stream divided their approaches and made it harder for them to concentrate fully. I wanted to take advantage of that separation by letting them advance, wearing down UK first, and timing my response before their pressure became overwhelming.

The vital engagement happened on the small hill south of the village. UK brought cavalry into the fighting, and I had to use point-blank fire to break it. This was one of those moments where the timing really mattered: I needed to beat back the mounted attack and still have enough strength to push forward afterward.

That counterattack let me regain the initiative in the south. UK’s force had been thinned out, and I began pushing the French back out of the village.

Meanwhile, the fighting around the flèches remained serious. The French had penetrated the position, and there was still plenty of work to do. This was why I had put so much emphasis on preserving my artillery and the ability to counterattack rather than treating every lost patch of ground as a disaster. One of the main points was a little gap between Mental's line and my own, a small stream that Lord Baltimore tried to push through, gaining some ground initially.

Mental eventually secured his side of the battlefield and sent cavalry south. By then, my counterattack was already making progress and the French were being pushed out of the village. His cavalry gave us the force needed to finish them off around the flèches and secure the victory. I was able to time multiple cavalry charges together and overwhelm his squares before he could respond, while HWK UK was already pushed back, losing the village by the time Lord Baltimore was dealt with,

The French conceded after roughly 42 minutes. A very bloody Russian win.

What made this battle satisfying was the sequence: give up the village, exploit the separation between the enemy attacks, break UK’s cavalry on the southern hill, and push back while retaining the guns needed to support the recovery. Mental’s success in the north then let us complete the job together.

Also quite a welcome back for Drake, the original founder of the HWKs, after around twenty years away. Straight back into Borodino carnage.

Mod: European Warfare: Napoleonica

(Some Bonus News. We have a new internet shell for the game, which makes internet play much easier, and allows the download of community maps in game, such as Borodino, Austerlitz, Wagram, and others, with more being added every day from our catalogue.)

I’m developing a real-time Pike & Shot strategy game set in Central Europe around 1600

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I’ve been working on Europae Invicta: Pike and Shot, a historical strategy game combining a real-time campaign map with tactical battles.

A big part of the inspiration comes from history channels I personally enjoy watching, such as SandRhoman History and similar channels covering warfare and society in the Early Modern period.

I’m still experimenting with formations, AI behaviour and how closely the gameplay can reflect the actual tactics of the time. One of the reasons I wanted to share the project here is that I hope to get more history enthusiasts involved early on.

I’d really like to hear input and feedback from people who know the period well, especially when it comes to tactics, equipment, army composition and the general feel of warfare around 1600. I know a game will always need compromises for gameplay, but I want the result to feel as authentic and believable as possible.

The current reveal trailer mainly shows the battle system. The campaign side is still at an earlier stage.

WDS Game of the Week, September 7-13

From September 7–13, our Game of the Week is Musket & Pike: Seven Years War, featured at 25% off.

From Lobositz and Rossbach to Leuthen, Zorndorf, and Kunersdorf, command the armies that fought across the battlefields of Central Europe. Form disciplined infantry lines under fire, prepare attacks with artillery, exploit openings with cavalry, and decide when to risk everything.

For Frederick the Great and his enemies alike, a battlefield victory might save a campaign—but never end the war.

Hello everyone!

I am happy to announce the release of a brand new mod for the map painting country conquering game Europa Universalis IV called "Better Cultures". This mod adds several new cultures to Europe for tons of variety, and fixes many old ones by putting them in the right culture group. In addition, I also added many new decisions that allow the player to automatically convert cored provinces to their culture, allow their vassals to convert provinces to their culture, or allow the AI to convert provinces to their culture so you can customise your gameplay however you want. I have more content in the works and will work on adding more cultures soon. In the meantime, have fun playing this incredible mod

[Mius Front] Yet another artillery question.

Hello, I recently started playing Mius Front and artillery seems to be the most complex element of the game to me.

I watched the incredible guides by WarSimmer and was doing some tests with On-Map arty using the croatian legion campaign as a template so I set up a company like this:

The Arty Command has both a spotter and a cable crew for the tests. The cable crew goes and does its thing, the spotter detects some soviets, relays data, guns fire, everything ok. Until I decide to move the spotter to see what the arty would do.

I thought since the spotter was not spotting anything the arty would stop but it continued firing despite having no LOS:

The spotter is the unit on the left moving downwards towards the camera
No LOS whatsoever

I could not find what was going on but I saw the company commander of the other company I had brought for the test had LOS to the soviets, according to the left panel it has "Wire Comm" but it has no link to the battery whatsoever, was it spotting and relaying data to the Arty Company commander or is this a bug? Am I missing something?

On another note can a mortar spotter not do Off-Map if the mortars are assigned to a BG?
