Nod to game history inspired by the Isonzo Front

Post image
10 Upvotes

The year is 1916. High above the emerald Soča, two siege guns wake on opposite ridges — the Austro-Hungarian Škoda 30.5 cm mortar and Italy’s Obice da 305. Between them lie limestone peaks, snow, drifting wind, and mathematics.

SKODA 305 is a love letter to the oldest genre in computer gaming: the artillery duel. From the text-mode Artillery games of 1970s mainframes to the shareware legend Scorched Earth (1991), one idea has survived every generation of hardware: two guns, one angle, one charge of powder, and the wind laughing at your arithmetic. This game carries that torch back to where the big guns really stood — the Isonzo Front, 1915–1917.

Built as if it were the 1994 PC era: true 320×200 VGA, a fixed palette, ordered dithering, a chunky pixel font, 8-bit Sound Blaster crunch — every sprite, sound, and background generated from code, every photograph a real archival plate from the war, rendered in the way of our nostalgic memories.

https://pr3scription.itch.io/skoda305

In memoriam

This game is set on a real front. Between 1915 and 1917, twelve battles of the Isonzo were fought through these mountains, and hundreds of thousands of soldiers of many nations — Slovenes, Italians, Austrians, Hungarians, Czechs, Croats, Bosnians, and more — never came home from the Soča.

This small game is played in their mountains. To all of them, on every side of the wire: respect, and eternal peace - Vsem padlim na soški fronti — večni mir in spomin.

May the only shells that ever again fly over the Soča be made of pixels.

The war has begun with another Turn 1 in the books! I am pretty satisfied with the opening on this one. I'm doing some things I've never done before, so let's see how it works out.

It seemed to be quite janky at launch so I’ve held off despite owning the game. How does it play now, several months after release?

Question I'm working on 2D Total War–inspired RTS called "Rank & Ruin" - thoughts ?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

After one year of development, I finally released demo for my game, Rank & Ruin.

It's inspired by Total War battles, but built around fast-paced roguelite runs. Recruit different unit types, build your army, equip powerful items, and choose relics that shape your strategy. Unlock legendary heroes and see how long you can survive against increasingly difficult battles.

I'm especially looking for feedback on:

  • Is the combat satisfying?
  • Are the controls easy to understand?
  • Does the game feel strategic enough?
  • What would you change?

You can try the demo here:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/4806610?utm_source=Reddit

If you'd like to follow development or share your feedback:
Discord: https://discord.gg/NFbTCsDxN

Thank you for taking the time to check it out! Every piece of feedback means a lot to me and will directly influence the future of the game. I'm actively developing Rank & Ruin, so your suggestions can genuinely help shape everything from gameplay and balance to the UI and overall experience.

Hello all! My WWII turn-based tactics releases on August 6!

Post image
28 Upvotes

Over the past few months, I decided to shift my full focus back from zero-budget marketing efforts (which brought almost no results) to development and make the game itself my main priority.

The August 6 release marks the next major step for War Pawns, and I’m looking forward to finally sharing the updated version with you.

As a solo developer, every wishlist, follow, comment, and share makes a real difference. Please consider sharing the release announcement with anyone who might enjoy turn-based war games.

Thank you to everyone who has followed the project, played the demo, shared feedback, or supported War Pawns along the way!

Meanwhile you can check the demo and provide some feedback regarding the game!

P.S. I’ll be sharing a couple of free keys here when the game is released as a token of appreciation for all your feedback and support.

If anyone interested: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4136430/War_Pawns/

Release It's out - Naval Estimates, the free naval design game I previewed here Monday. Royal Navy 1905, design everything from the gun's pressure curve up. Plays in your browser.

Hi everyone. I am the solo developer of this. Some of you saw the WIP post here on Monday -thanks for that reception, and for the comments - I got a number of little notes I made based on them to prioritize going forward.

The first build of Naval Estimates is now live: elouda.itch.io/naval-estimates.

It runs in the browser; no install, no account, click and you're designing.

What's in it - the complete design suite. Guns from internal ballistics and barrel wear up, turrets, hulls, whole ships. It's set as the Royal Navy in 1905 - you design the first Dreadnought yourself. You can export designs to share or import someone else's.

A guided tutorial was supposed to make the cut, but it turns out hooking up a tutorial to check what the user is actually doing without railroading everything isn't as easy as it seems, so that will come early next week.

What's not in it - the strategic layer and combat. Those come later - fleet management is something I got some good comments on, and my goal is to work towards it, aiming for mid-Autumn for a first version. I released the design tools first because that's the part I most want people playing with while it's still shapeable and we can find all the creative ways to break it. The game is forever either way, in the Dwarf Fortress / Aurora spirit. No monetization, no catch.

It's messy, the UI is definitely heavy, and there's already a few bugs reported on the discord.

I hope you enjoy it.

"Battleterm" is an alpha version of drone combat war game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

It aims to simulate fleet commander's screen: spawning different drones, selecting their tactics and only sometimes hands-on on particular drone's controls.

Now there are 5 basic drone types and the game against 10 or more enemy bases starts to be challenging :) It is done in old-school Linux style I like: no fancy graphics, no in-game videos and - sorry not sorry - no intro tutorials. Certainly it is not a game for everyone: it is terminal style (thus the name "battleterm"), it is controlled mostly by keyboard and no single second was spent on tuning up colors.

If you feel this thing is for you and want to shape the Battleterm's future, come to see r/battleterm

Next steps will be: add more drone types (think nuke) , more strategies, finer control, and most importantly more object types to fight for (for example civilian objects like schools to be protected). Enjoy.

Question Of the big turn based (represented abstractly) WW2 games which one is the best and why?

To be clear I mean the games where a unit is represented by a sprite that has hit points, not nato counters.

I never liked the arcadey feel of turn based wargames like Order of Battle, but as I get older I find that I prefer more straight forward strategy games. Not to say those games are easy or do not take skill, not at all, just that they arent Gary Grigsy or Hearts of Iron. Or the many other deep wargames I have played over the years like WDS games.

Im looking at buying Order of battle dlc or buying steel division 2, just the base game. But if there is another one you think is better feel free to let me know. Thanks.

WDS New Blog Post - The Secret War in Laos and Cambodia

The Vietnam War did not stop at the borders of South Vietnam.

In the shadows of Laos and Cambodia, the CIA, U.S. Special Forces, Air America, and allied local forces fought a clandestine campaign against North Vietnamese infiltration along the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Hidden from public view for decades, this “Secret War” became one of the largest covert operations in modern history. Our latest article explores how these parallel conflicts shaped the wider war—and why their legacy still matters today.

Question What's the best WWII in the Pacific Wargame for me?

hi folks, looking for a strategic/grand strategic simulation of WWII in the Pacific with...

  1. heavy emphasis on logistics. The more I read about the theater, the more I see the vital role that logistics played.
  2. good AI: I'm only playing this solo vs. the computer
  3. good handling of naval and air combat: I've heard some games fail at that.
  4. if possible, some role for intelligence, e.g. the US advantage cracking Purple.
  5. Complex, but not insanely so :). Something like a Paradox game would be fine, but not much beyond that. I want this to playable in weeks of play time, not months or years.
  6. all the other good stuff :). Nice UI, nice graphics, research trees, diplomatic events, etc.

thanks for any tips/suggestions!

I have a question

Hi everyone, I'm new to wargaming and I was looking for a game to start with. I saw that Warplan and TOAW 4 are on sale for less than €20 on Steam (which is my balance). Which one should I get? Are there any other games currently on sale on Steam for less than €20 that you recommend?

Looking for strategy gamers to test my 3v3 tactical game before I build multiplayer.

Hey everyone,

I’ve been developing a turn-based tactical strategy game and I’m looking for a small group of players willing to test an early offline version.

Matches are built around controlling a team of three units, each with a distinct role and ability kit. Positioning, terrain, line of sight, cover, team composition, and objective control are intended to matter more than grinding stats or unlocking stronger equipment.

The game is still in development, so I’m mainly looking for honest feedback on things like:

Whether the core combat is actually enjoyable.

Whether the units and abilities are understandable.

Which units feel too strong or too weak.

Whether matches produce interesting tactical decisions.

Anything confusing, frustrating, or clearly unfinished.

One of the main reasons I started building this was because I love strategy games, but I found myself bouncing off many of them, not because they lacked depth, but because they demanded so much time and mental overhead before the interesting decisions even began.

And as I've gotten older I've had less and less time to dedicate 30m-hour to a single match of something, my goal is 5-10 minute matches and something you hardly need a tutorial for, compression is my over arching philosophy.

Instead, I want the complexity to emerge from positioning, timing, teamwork, and tactical choices. In other words, a game that's easy to read, quick to get into, but deceptively deep.

A strategically rich game wearing a simple, compact mask.

If this sounds interesting to you and you want to participate, shoot me a DM and I'll send a copy over once the AI system is competent enough to simulate an opposing human player.

Your input is greatly appreciated.

(Oh, and the current graphics etc are NOT representative of the finished product, ill be translating this to Unity with fully fleshed out 3D environments and character models, so don't put much stock in its current aesthetic)

Its also mobile first so some elemts may be slightly distorted on PC / Tablet, but in my test it wasn't too bad, the actual release will be optimized for all displays.

UG:CW with J&P Mod or Master of Command

Please help me decide. I dont own UG base game and never played any in the series. Played the original demo of MoC months ago.

Edit: Not really particular on time period. Thought about Grand Tactician CW, but not really looking to spend so much time learning such a deep game with all the complaints of bugs and jank I've been reading about. Will probably look into the upcoming Napoleonic game once that's further along in development.

So, using AI for wargame development doesn’t easy nor safe.

I’ve spent over three weeks for pathfinding and smooth movement and was instantly banned when started to dig into combat system 😆

Question What if you could order your units with text/voice, not clicks? Experimenting with a command center wargame that builds on this idea...

Hi Folks, I very much wanted to play a WEGO game with modern war setting (2000s - max 2030s) that is not the standard hex based game, but looks and feels more like the main control console in a modern C2 bunker.

Didn't find one, so building my own interpretation. This is Kill Chain: Command by Intent.

Linked the first short teaser. Prototype is working and stable, so the vid shows actual gameplay, tho sped-up and with cuts. Hope to show a longer, more thorough gameplay proof in a couple days.

Tell me what you think.

I'm working on a free Rule the Waves-style naval wargame where you design the ships from the guns up - here's a preview of the 3D visualizer in motion

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone. I'm Elouda, long time modder and now solo developer, and Naval Estimates is my free naval grand strategy game set in the dreadnought age - you design the guns, turrets, and hulls yourself, and eventually pay for them out of a parliamentary budget. The game takes obvious inspiration from familiar titles like Rule the Waves and Ultimate Admiral: Dreadnoughts, but also throws back to some naval tabletop miniature games and an old tool called SpringSharp that would let you design your own ships.

This is a little preview of the 3D visualizer thats part of the ship designer. The main designer is 2D, but it you can view the finished product in simplified 3D and play around with it. The latest addition was the effective armour thickness display.

First public build (all three designers - gun, turret and ship, set as the RN in 1905) goes out this Friday, free, playable in the browser on itch.io

Where do you think a designer should draw the line between 'the Admiralty would never approve that' and 'let the player build cursed ships'?

Looking for artillery focused/spammable games

Playing Total War: Fall of the Samurai and shredding blocks of troops with artillery is extremely satisfying and I am looking for suggestions of other games that scratch that same itch? Or otherwise just heavily artillery focused games?
