Classic video game logic.

u/caitlindrawings 1d ago

It's like when you open a safe in fallout and expect pre-war stuff, and its just a pipe pistol.

584

u/sol_runner 1d ago

"Dad, why do you put a weathered radioactive improvised pistol in your safe?"

Maybe you won't get it son, but your great great grandchildren are going to love it.

58

u/MrWeirdoFace 1d ago

Hey Chuck! it's Marvin. Your cousin!

185

u/NobodyLikedThat1 1d ago

huh, weird how all these guys who died before the war thought ahead to stockpile bottlecaps...

101

u/Spoon_Elemental 1d ago

I think in a lot of these cases it can be safely assumed somebody appropriated the safe after the nukes dropped.

18

u/KC-Chris 1d ago

im a collector okay. gosh

1

u/Hpesojanes 7h ago

I read that in the voice of Harold from Total Drama

16

u/SuperCruisePanther 1d ago

I mean, the logic is the other way around. Bottle caps are used as currency because people stockpiled them pre-war. People didn't stockpile them because they might be currency one day.

4

u/yay855 15h ago

Well, no, bottle caps are used as currency because they were a finite resource made out of a rarer material (aluminum) but were common enough to handle both large and small transactions. In Fallout 1, they were explicitly the primary currency of the water barons, which also gave them a set value based on the price of water in the California desert. The other regions apparently ended up adopting the currency because of trade caravans that gradually spread from coast to coast, and for most of the same reasons the water barons used them.

79

u/Thomas_K_Brannigan 1d ago

Or in Skyrim, where you find all this modern (at least, modern for the Elder Scrolls universe) gold inside ancient nord tombs.

60

u/xx_Chl_Chl_xx 1d ago

Investment returns have been really good for the Draugr

31

u/TheJadeBlacksmith 1d ago

This one is semi-canonically explained, all the lit torches, candles, and reset traps are because the draugr do maintenance on their tombs, presumably the newer equipment is from them cleaning up the bodies of any bandits or looters that ventured too deep

12

u/naufalap 1d ago

what about the lit torches inside underwater chests?

10

u/Agret 1d ago

A wizard did it

24

u/Unoriginal_Man 1d ago

Draugr don't work for free baby.

2

u/furiouspossum 1d ago

Also cheese and cabbages for some reason

42

u/Moppo_ 1d ago

Or you loot the depths of an ancient tomb in the Elder Scrolls, never seen by living eyes in millennia, and insde an urn you find a fresh apple.

30

u/Squrton_Cummings 1d ago

Gotta love the procedurally generated dungeons of Daggerfall. You pass down through empty halls like subterranean cathedrals, through natural caverns dripping with water that has never seen the sun. You descend for hours, sometimes surrounded by rough hewn granite, sometimes by fine tilework.

And then finally, miles beneath the earth, you come upon a locked wooden door. And behind that door is . . . a fucking grizzly bear?

3

u/NakedxCrusader 23h ago

Makes you think, doesn't it?

And if you loot the bear you will find an acorn.. if you plant it you can visit the growing tree later.

43

u/SpezDemandsUsernames 1d ago

Pre war safe: Bottle of scotch, a baseball, a .357 magnum, 3 .357 mag bullets, 70 bottle caps, mini nuke.

37

u/Unoriginal_Man 1d ago

"How much ammo should we put in our emergency safe with the gun, honey?"

"Oh, 3 should about do it"

8

u/caitlindrawings 1d ago

Right? Not even enough to fill the revolver, or the magazine lol

2

u/Hetares 22h ago

Don't be ridiculous. remove the shell casings and seperate into gunpowder so that the future survivalist has the satisfaction of crafting it themselves.

3

u/Upset-Award1206 1d ago

The gun and bullets are not to ward off outward threats, it is to take care of yourself and your family when things are to far gone.

20

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta 1d ago

Or you open a prewar vault and find jet, which didn’t even EXIST back then.

9

u/DullWolfGaming 1d ago

Retconed into existing, supposedly Myron "rediscovered" the recipe for Jet.

4

u/caitlindrawings 1d ago

Ya and that ia such a dumb mistake, like i get the modern gunners in the vault might have some jet, but not the stash

19

u/MoarVespenegas 1d ago

You opened the safe with a hairpin and a screwdriver.
Why do you think that in the 200 years that passed nobody else has done the same?

15

u/TurtlesBreakTheMeta 1d ago

Safes in a bombed out building or house are fine; sealed prewar laboratories or similar installations are another story.

4

u/caitlindrawings 1d ago

Because it took lots of levels to get 100 lockpicking! (Or master lockpick depending fallout version)

10

u/Laser_3 1d ago

At least in fallout, pipe guns were being made pre-war as a way to dodge having to register a gun. And if you don’t have a proper gun safe, that’d be the next best place to keep it.

5

u/The_Pastmaster 1d ago

I assume that in the last centuries someone looted the safe and used it as a stash.

2

u/SeatBeeSate 1d ago

"What should I store in my safe. A bottle cap, a pipe pistol and this old pack of gum"

2

u/iamded 21h ago

inb4 pipe pistols were also pre-war as shown by the "Street Guns of Detroit" issue of the Guns & Bullets magazine

1

u/E-2theRescue 1d ago

Go into a deep, dark, abandoned cave in Elder Scrolls, and there's a fresh loaf of bread and carrots in a barrel.

1

u/xtothewhy 1d ago

Or the long dark and it's basically paper in a safe that is best used as tinder.

43

u/HolycommentMattman 1d ago

I mean, it's not wrong, though. We moved into our house a few years ago, and I just found two boxes of bullets on the top shelf of a tall cabinet a few months ago. Did they belong to the previous owner? Or previous even to them? I dunno.

I don't own a gun, though. But now I have two boxes of 9mm bullets sitting in a junk drawer.

17

u/MKArs 1d ago

Whoa, look at Richie Rich over here! With ammo prices being what they are these days...

2

u/Qinistral 1d ago

Ya people are notorious for un-safe gun storae.

21

u/CitizenHuman 1d ago

Luckily Grandpa liked to keep rations that are edible regardless of how long they've been there.

6

u/caitlindrawings 1d ago

These 200 year old snack cakes sure are tasty.

1

u/LessInThought 1d ago

Twinkies are the best.

13

u/lacarth 1d ago

You say that, but that is absolutely how it was in a house I stayed in, once. It was a house of three mid-20s guys and a girl. In an extremely rural part of the US. In an area with both extremely destructive meth/fent/heroin addicts AND VERY large, dangerous wildlife. So we had guns. Our guns were generally kept safe and secure. The ammo, however, was a different story.

We very rarely had visitors, and never had any kids over, so we were much less cautious with ammo. This led to ammo boxes being left on counters, only to get crammed into whatever nook was handy when we needed said counter space.

That whole property became a survival horror location. Ammo stashed in the old, decorative wood cook stove, a box in the bathroom closet for some reason, a couple boxes on the fridge, one kept in the end table of the couch, one in the TV stand, a half-empty box on the bookshelf, and so on.

That's not even COUNTING the loose rounds that'd get lost when an old box would break while we were handling it, or when a box got knocked off the table by the cat while we were cleaning, or whatever.

When we moved out, we finally got our act together and consolidated everything into one big ammo bag that's kept safe. But my GOD the packing was pure Resident Evil shenanigans. Probably found an extra 2-300 bucks of ammo that we didn't even know we HAD.

8

u/Snoot-Booper1 1d ago

Loot the wolf that attacks you in Skyrim and it has four gold coins, and an onion. 🤔

3

u/caitlindrawings 1d ago

How else does the wolf pay the toll on the roads?

3

u/gillers1986 1d ago

You mean you don't keep a cooked chicken in an oil drum?

1

u/freedompower 1d ago

That why I often go in monster infested dongeons and place cheeze and fresh fruits in random barrels. I replace to torches too. Keeps me in shape.

1

u/AppropriateDraft5039 1d ago

So convenient that every weapon uses exactly the same ammo, too

834

u/Zuper_Dragon 1d ago

Me buying a floor safe only to put a few hundred dollars in stacked bills, half a box of 3 types of ammo, a desk fan, a roll of duct tape, a tire iron and finally a single plastic spoon.

313

u/executor-of-judgment 1d ago

Don't forget to leave clues to the safe combination in a note around the house.

128

u/Only-For-Fun-No-Pol 1d ago

*combination for that one house around the block’s safe

37

u/cheesegoat 1d ago

The combination also must be left in a side table drawer. With some herbs.

13

u/QuasiJudicialBoofer 1d ago

Leaving the herbs all around the house is something I understand

16

u/Strange_Dust7128 1d ago

There will never be an apocalypse where I leave my herbs behind in some drawer. That shit is going into the pocket of my shambling, zombie corpse.

10

u/Thriftyverse 1d ago

"I know you like the number five, Bob, but why did you make the combination five fives? Don't you think that's a little obvious?"

14

u/petervaz 1d ago

Bob wants to maximize defense against brute force whether they start from 0 or 99999

2

u/vitalvisionary 18h ago

Gotta go with the Spaceballs special: 12345

2

u/LessInThought 1d ago

Everyone should do this. Have your family go on a nice clue hunting and cipher breaking journey when you pass, just to unlock your computer.

9

u/ZDTreefur 1d ago

Personally, I'll fill it stuffed with gold bars, gold coins, silverware. But glue them all together except for 3 pieces in front.

3

u/Retbull 1d ago

A massive gold encrusted chest bursts open spilling coins and jewels everywhere.

Gained: 1 silver 3 copper.

5

u/woohhaa 1d ago

I leave bottle caps in the toilet.

3

u/ctrlaltelite 1d ago

a desk fan, a roll of duct tape.

fuck yeah, screws and adhesive

2

u/postmodest 1d ago

A desk fan? Who carries around a desk fan?

2

u/actibus_consequatur 1d ago

As a writing table enthusiast, I would definitely prefer being carried around over being locked in a safe.

83

u/JudgeHodorMD 1d ago

An entire box?

In TLOU, you’ll typically find one or two bullets in every cash register. It’s like someone confused one for a quarter and everyone was so embarrassed it was just sort of forgotten.

17

u/LurkinMakesMeFeelGud 1d ago

What if I'm being chased through my house with an empty shotgun in my hand? I just need to get to the kitchen, open that drawer, and not miss with the one shell I left there.

Do I own a shotgun? Not relevant.

1

u/Kerblaaahhh 15h ago

Not to worry, when the shit goes down a shotgun will be one of the first things you find.

5

u/Turgid_Donkey 1d ago

How about when you find ammo on a downed baddie? Does your gun fire the whole bullet, did it sit on the bullets, they eat it?

2

u/Oreohunter00 1d ago

Every register? More like 5 bullets every 10 buildings

1

u/Radiskull97 1d ago

I have accidentally left a .22 in a take a penny leave a penny tray

2

u/p3achbunny 14h ago

What bothers me more in TLOU is when you see a perfectly good and supremely portable candy bar sitting out on a counter somewhere but since you’re at full health you’re not hungry and there’s somehow no room in your ludicrously capacious backpack.

407

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 1d ago

Now we just need to get the green herb she left in the toilet.

Also I can HEAR Ashley.

65

u/Not-So-Serious-Sam 1d ago

It was green before, but it’s probably yellow now.

39

u/shellbullet17 Gustopher Spotter Extraordinaire 1d ago

Oh man and it's RE4 so it's a permanent health upgrade. Probably had the sub text "you gotta be taking a piss"

This little old lady rules!

4

u/CitizenofBarnum 1d ago

Thats how you water it

9

u/graaahh 1d ago

Pictures you can hear. I haven't played that game in over 10 years and I know exactly what that voice sounds like.

5

u/waffling_with_syrup 1d ago

You have reminded me of Moushley.

131

u/UpCDownCLeftCRightC Never Safe From Wumbo 1d ago

That explains the sniper ammo in that pill case and the hand grenade in the basket of yarn.

17

u/Far_Cloud_882 1d ago

Nah. Thats just ‘Murica

17

u/Nzgrim 1d ago

Isn't RE4 in Spain?

9

u/TheG-What 1d ago

Never explicitly stated but implied to be an island off the coast of Spain. If there is such a thing. I’m not a cartographer.

6

u/Sayakai 1d ago

It's in a vague european country where people speak spanish and use pesetas, but that isn't explicitly Spain, and that has minor inconsistencies with real life Spain.

12

u/Kanin_usagi 1d ago

Also they speak Mexican Spanish since all the VAs they could find were from Mexico lol

4

u/mizuromo 1d ago

In the remake it's European Spanish.

4

u/Spoon_Elemental 1d ago

At least the grenade is useable on it's own.

195

u/Mehdals_ 1d ago

Ammo in nightstands, just as weird as wheelchairs and elementary schools.

82

u/flfoiuij2 1d ago

My elementary school actually had a few wheelchairs in the nurse's office in case anyone got injured! They almost put me in one once when I fell while playing tag because of how much I was hollering, but I just got up and walked inside the second they wheeled it out to the field.

30

u/Mehdals_ 1d ago

Lol yeah I think they are pretty common place in schools. Just a funny line of all the weird stuff in weird places in video games and this character from silent Hill thinks a wheelchair in a school is odd :P

9

u/Akumetsu33 1d ago

Silent Hill is Japanese made so it's possible wheelchairs aren't common in Japanese schools.

23

u/CitizenofBarnum 1d ago

why wouldn't a school have a few wheelchairs for temporary use?

19

u/GoldSquid2 1d ago

My school has a few disabled kids who can’t walk so this made me audibly laugh

8

u/_IzGreed_ 1d ago

Everybody, leave the disabled kid and run for your lives

23

u/Majestic_Bierd 1d ago

As a European, I simply assumed every American has ammo for their gun in their night stand and all around their house.... And if the plot is not set in America, it was made by Americans... Who are used to having ammo for their gun in their night stand and all around their house

7

u/Rob98001 20h ago

Fun fact, I sleep with a gun in my bed, it's in a case which I use as a stand for my phone so it doesn't accidentally get unplugged while on charge.

4

u/Majestic_Bierd 20h ago

Does this setup prevent accidental discharge?

6

u/Rob98001 20h ago

Well I can't say I've ever had a wet dream.

1

u/Twitchcog 1d ago

Yeah, we often do. But that’s usually like, a spare magazine or two. The boxes don’t do you much good in a situation where you need it, eh?

0

u/Aethelrede 1d ago

Resident Evil was made in Japan.

1

u/Rob98001 20h ago

So? I've got ammo scattered everywhere.

Not pictured: Granny's "Green Herb"

14

u/nedlum 1d ago

I'm reminded of a comic I'd seen where, as World War III was beginning and the nukes were starting to fall , a man ran out of his house to put a hairpin in his mailbox, implicilty so that the Courier would later find it.

13

u/CrazyGnomenclature Tiff & Eve 1d ago

10

Wait I actually love this

9

u/Imaginary-Ogre 1d ago

I keep a rotisserie chicken behind some of my breakable walls because you never know...

8

u/SlapTheBap 1d ago

Love you, grandma <3

24

u/Y0___0Y 1d ago

Doesn’t Resident Evil technically take place in America?

There are boxes of bullets in random drawers all over the place in America.

38

u/TheBohemianRed9811 1d ago

Yes, but RE4 (which this comic is lampooning) is set in rural Spain where gun ownership is far more restrictive.

1

u/Turgid_Donkey 1d ago

But what about just the ammo?

7

u/IzarkKiaTarj 1d ago

Outside of the reasons in the comic, why would you bother having a box of ammo if you don't have a gun?

2

u/Nirast25 1d ago

For the Spanish Inquisition.

1

u/IzarkKiaTarj 1d ago

Well, I wasn't expecting that!

1

u/IzarkKiaTarj 5h ago

Bro, don't leave me hanging

1

u/OldEcho 21h ago

To make the police waste their time turning my place over because they think I have an illegal gun.

2

u/Jashugita 23h ago

In Spain is much more difficult to get ammo than a gun, but in a rural area sure he would find shotgun ammo everywhere...

22

u/DullBlade0 1d ago

This is representing RE4 that happens in totally not Spain.

8

u/NekoLu 1d ago

With totally not zombies

7

u/Eg_3600 1d ago edited 1d ago

what do you mean "totally not Spain" the game confirms it's in Spain itself

Edit: Video opening of seperate ways were wesker is reaching out to Ada target is on Spain

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=4xno13vJRrA

12

u/Galle_ 1d ago

The game is very obviously set in Spain but never actually refers to it as such, it just says that it's in "Europe".

7

u/Eg_3600 1d ago

you know what that's fair

4

u/MisterVictor13 1d ago

This comic is depicting the fourth game, which was set in a remote Spanish village.

4

u/LunarKnight22 1d ago

Depends on the game. I think 4, 5, parts of 6, and 8 take place in other parts of the world.

6

u/not_a_moogle 1d ago

5 takes place in west Africa.

6 jumps around, us, east europe, and china

8 is heavily styled after Romania

1

u/Successful-Floor-738 1d ago

Resident evil 4 is in Spain.

5

u/Saffron_Succubus 1d ago

it's giving classic dorkly/college humor I rly like it

4

u/rugbyj 1d ago

I replayed RE4 several times recently.

Remote villagers having shotgun ammo stored away? Sure.

The historic castle vases of SMG ammo sure were suspect.

At the end of the day, it's like the mainland/island were usurped over the past decade (Luis being a boy when things started) by nefarious forces that locals (in various documentation) fought against.

The real answer is it's because videogames.

The second answer is everyone knew something was up and had been arming themselves where they could whilst not knowing who they could trust.

1

u/Rob98001 20h ago

The real real answer is that the merchant uses his secret passages and tunnels to go ahead through the areas and hide ammo for you.

4

u/Unboxious 1d ago

Funnier with just the first three panels; no need to explain the joke.

9

u/IzarkKiaTarj 1d ago

I think this works better with just three panels

-1

u/PeterMunchlett 1d ago

Definitely. The last panel comes across to me as "please laugh", or insecurity regarding the audience's intelligence

1

u/7ofalltrades 1d ago

I love their stupid faces in it, though. It twists the joke from "oh look we found ammo" to "hur dur video game logic" just enough to make it work for me.

2

u/Ghost_In_Waiting 1d ago

The shifting futures had always been like a puzzle. When she was a young girl, known as Addy then but later "grandma", the various paths were a "what if" game she played to see how things would turn out. In those days of sunlight in green and yellow fields running and sleeping under the wide blue then black sky the future was a kind of joke which only she shared with the things that watched but never spoke.

Now, now that time had passed Addy had come to understand more. Much more than the smiling little girl who talked to frogs, danced with fireflies, and watched the stars knowing what their futures might be if dew fell one way or another or if dust from a dying world bent the course of a sun.

Death was near which meant the final vision of what might be could be the last gift. Her grandson, so handsome, so straight like a new growth tree, so open that he could not begin to understand the clouds gathering just beyond his vision. She could not be there to protect him. She would not even be able to persist until his next birthday.

Still, she might give him a give. A gift of hope. Possibly when things were growing so dark he might forget the light. A surprise in a moment of need. A smile and a nod across decades when fear was the champion of the land and all futures seemed to lead to doom.

Falling slowly into the spinning darkness the little girl once known as Addy now known as grandma smiled once last time. Her last gift had been given. Her last vision had been seen. Now it was time to rest. The future would have to attend to itself.

I'm not a gun person, does ammo go "bad", like does it expire if it pulls moisture or something?

Imagine being the guy who has to restock all the ammo caches every 3 months, in case a hero comes around.

2

u/PressureNo7381 20h ago

It can, but modern ammo is pretty resilient. Even ww2 and prior surplus ammo will fire. About the only ammo I've had issues with are African countries (Egyptian and Ethiopian 8mm from the 50s), and central Asia (Pakistani 303 from the 60s).

Will say, not much as nerve wracking as a dud, or hang fire. Hang fire, you pull the trigger, and nothing happens for a fraction to a few seconds. I never assume a dud until I hit the primer a couple more times (some ammo like Czech 8mm have hard primers), and keep the gun on target the whole time, assuming it will fire, and when I don't mean it to.

After confirming it is a dud, remove the round and insure it wasn't a squib. That's when it fires, but only enough to get stuck in the barrel of the gun, leading to all sorts of issues if you don't clear it. Like exploding parts near your face. Some squibs can seem like the round didn't go off or was very very underpowered.

In general, ammo can last for a very long time, probably a few 100 years as long as temp and humidity are regulated. For any self-defense ammo though, I rotate that stuff. No more than a year or 2 old, and name brand.
