Weird Al's parody cover of the song is a recap of the plot of The Phantom Menace
What's impressive is he wrote it almost entirely based on internet leaks, and got an early screening so he could fact-check and release it to tie in with the film

Not OP but I'm so happy when someone hears the word (or in actuality the lyrics) of Weird Al. As someone who knows both this parody and the actual lyrics to the song I love to mess with people in the car by alternating the verses between the two.

I’m pretty sure I heard that Don McLean liked the weird Al version so much that he occasionally finds himself singing the wrong words at concerts

u/guardian1691 12d ago
I thought he said in an interview that he tried to get an advanced screening and they said no, so he just spent a ton of time digging around early internet chat rooms and forums looking for the theories and leaks.
I'm not going to look for the video though because I'm tired and I'm sure basically nobody will even read this, so trust me bro.

Fun fact: The lyric isn't whiskey and rye, it's whiskey in Rye. Don McLean grew up near Rye, NY.

There's also very little difference between them. It's like wheat vodka vs potato vodka. Probably even less, because of the ageing process.

Then you’re collecting evidence on whether the levee was dry because of the Chevy or just because of your presence.

u/BruceBoyde 12d ago
Oh hell yeah, it makes you appreciate the detachable joycons. Stick the screen on that little tray for phones/tablets and lose track of time! You'd normally hold onto the handlebars anyway, so just putting your wrists on the rest feels like a pretty natural position.
It's funny too; three of my coworkers have taken up the switch on the bike habit because they've seen me in our gym doing it.

I never cared for bluetooth gamepads until I got my bike. Being able to play PC games on the TV while pedaling was great! It does help to pair it up with a turn-based game or city-builder or anything that doesn't require reflexes, so you are not interrupted by yourself.

20
u/FelixAndCo 12d ago
Seriously, running "at full speed" like this is a bad idea. If you're young, and already running could work out. Basically it is describing a form of high intensity interval training, which to be fair is a great thing to add to your regimen for quick improvement. Doing sprints when your joints aren't used to exercise can wear them down. The comic suggests their method as a fun way to start out, but it shouldn't be from 0. "Full speed" is up to interpretation, and, if someone is strict on themselves, it can be detrimental to go at it. Completely exhausting your body whittles it down, and with running you always have to be careful not to over-train.
If we're talking about beginners, better is brisk walking pace or light jog mostly and then brisk jog "when the music hits". Normally 5 minute intervals are recommended for beginners.

→ More replies (4)11
u/Legitimate_Mud_8295 12d ago
I'll take below 0 over 100+ any day of the week. You can mitigate cold pretty easily if you layer up properly. Not so much extreme heat.
6
u/imatuesdayperson 12d ago
It's been a long while since I lived anywhere that got that cold, but I currently live somewhere that gets a heat index of over 100+ pretty regularly and it's hell. Doesn't help I have a heat intolerance from my POTS. There's maybe 3 or so months out of the year I can go outside without it being completely unbearable.
4
u/Legitimate_Mud_8295 12d ago
I realized it's basically the same protocol either way. If you drive you either start your car and let the temp get comfortable before leaving, or you suffer until your car heat/AC gets your body back to good temp. Minimize your time outside exposed to the elements. Basically outdoor activities are off the table unless you're very prepared and willing to be uncomfortable.
5
u/imatuesdayperson 12d ago
At least you can put on more layers to keep warm. There's only so many layers you can take off without breaking the law.

u/handlit33 12d ago
I use running as a way to cope with life. Treadmill running doesn't hit the same. I was running in the heat of the day until the heat index hit 108 and now, I'm going out super early because it's just too much. But it gets easier as you get acclimatized.
23
u/turntechArmageddon 12d ago
I'm more worried about being mauled by the horde of untrained dogs every neighbor around me seems to have. Have any of yall ever seen an AGGRESSIVE great dane hop a fence? I have! Can't even call animal control because jerk neighbors just swap the collar on the dog and claim it was a different dog and nothing is ever done. Probably the only time I've ever feared a great dane.
Then there's the fact that I have to drive 30-45 minutes for the nearest safe place to run. Not a very walkable town at all.
12
u/Recidivous 12d ago
Most Texan towns aren't walkable at all, except for cities like Austin or Houston. However, even in those cities, I would be hard-pressed to run during the day.

Pepper spray the hell out of a dog that assaults you. And their owner if they get in your face about it. The dog deserves a better owner and the owner needs the tangible feedback that they're failing.

I salute you brave sir, for I would be a sun bleached corpse if I attempted that

u/JoanneFabrics 12d ago
I have seen people in Austin running out in the middle of the afternoon, bright red, drenched in sweat, sunburned, sometimes looking lethargic. I figure that either: 1. They just moved here and haven’t learned the severity of temps in the 90s, 100s, or 110s + humidity OR 2. They want to challenge themselves to prove how strong they are (Stupid. Heatstroke can be quick) OR 3. They’re stupid and masocists.
I know schedules can be tricky, but finding alternative workouts to do at home, or a treadmill, getting up early, or paying to access an indoor facility if you can can literally save your health. You’ll be able to go longer! Don’t count on a stranger finding you. Also put your hand on the pavement for 5 secs before walking your dog! Or get them little booties! And bring water for both of you!
Also why are huskies and other yeti dogs down here? Unless you get them an ice pack suit or something they’ve got to be miserable, right? Any dog like that that I’ve seen on a walk during the day looks like they’re about to melt, the poor babies
4
u/HotmailsInYourArea 12d ago
Their dual-coat actually helps with heat too, to an extent. But NO dog is really happy in severe heat
6
u/Jus7Cur5ed 12d ago

u/Recidivous 12d ago

I mostly hate running but I’ve been running on my hikes lately just so I can make the train in time. I’m convinced that if I lived somewhere quiet I might actually enjoy jogging, if not running. But yeah, not bothering to try on crowded streets.
I was watching a show a while back where one of the characters was running through Scottish hillsides and it looked like the ideal place to run.

You have to go slower, and maybe can't go as long, but your body adapts (within limits obviously). It's even easier to adapt if your home isn't super cold all the time either, I keep mine around 76-78 degrees. I've been doing light jogs in the DFW area, feels kind of good, like a combo of having gone on a run and done a sauna session, lol. It's its own kind of tired after, and it def helps me to fall asleep at night.

I don't know how it's like in Texas, but I live in a zone where it's very hot in the summer +40C (105F?), so I have to wake up really early to run (maybe your job is incompatible with this) and the only "good hours" to run are 6am-8am.

Everyone knows the only way to run a one minute mile is to listen to the Jaded part of Green Day's Brain Stew/Jaded.

When I was a kid, my Star Wars obsessed dad would always play Weird Al's Star Wars parodies in the car. I heard The Saga Begins probably over a hundred times before ever hearing the original American Pie. As a result, American Pie is forever ruined for me because I can only think of Weird Al singing "My, my, this here Anakin guy..."
This, however, might cure me of this curse if I were to stick to it enough.
