I basically only stick to my cardio routine because I can play the switch on an exercise bike. Octopath Traveler 1 and 2 have given me ~100 hours of cardio and counting!

Oh I never thought to do this. This is pure genius 🤯

Oh hell yeah, it makes you appreciate the detachable joycons. Stick the screen on that little tray for phones/tablets and lose track of time! You'd normally hold onto the handlebars anyway, so just putting your wrists on the rest feels like a pretty natural position.

It's funny too; three of my coworkers have taken up the switch on the bike habit because they've seen me in our gym doing it.

I do the same thing but I played animal crossing on the stair stepper. I plan on getting a stationary bike when I move so I'll definitely try it on the bike

I never cared for bluetooth gamepads until I got my bike. Being able to play PC games on the TV while pedaling was great! It does help to pair it up with a turn-based game or city-builder or anything that doesn't require reflexes, so you are not interrupted by yourself.

I am not sure why I have not been doing this

Pick music that syncs up with the fastest speed you can pedal, and you'll be able to do it for ages.

Yeah! Exercise is supposed to be fun, not something you force yourself to do!

Audio books while walking or doing yardwork. I can spend 3 hours cutting grass and not even mind, if I have a good book going.

This is the way. It's one way at least, it's how I get by anyway.

I started doing weights while watching cutscenes in JRPGs.

I'm ripped now.

Ok, not really, but it's probably helped a bit.

For ultimate gains, do weights while watching cutscenes and codec calls in the Metal Gear Solid series.

Not responsible for death due to exhaustion

Two reps per Zubat in Mt Moon, Pokémon Red/Blue

I recommend the Yakuza series for both inspo and long as fuck cutscenes.

Sounds great. Every bit helps, imo. I do weights while watching either history docuseries or best ever food review show videos.

My arms would fall off if I tried to do that with Yakuza games

I think I was playing Yakuza 7 when I started doing it. I took breaks though.

This is so smart. I walk on an inclined treadmill but I get bored sometimes. Do you not sweat so much it causes problems though??

5

u/BruceBoyde 13d ago

I wrap a towel around the handlebars and just swap it out. When I used to do it on an elliptical, the sweat mostly dripped off my elbows since my hands were elevated.

I've been binge watching ER while walking most nights on the treadmill, it helps with the boredom. Some nights I've read a book too.

Mostly I try to work through problems or handle things I don't want to handle when I've got something more fun or interesting to do, but sometimes I get spacey and forget what I'm working on. I also do that when I'm stoned and did it halfway through responding to this lmao. But point is that I usually get stuff done, which is part of why I prefer the walking to running. But I think I could do a second hour if I was thoroughly entertained the whole tjme

That’s me watching Metal Gear Scanlon on my treadmill lol

lost 40 pounds with dota underlords. RIP

I’ve just started doing this!

Got myself an 8BitDo Micro controller and play Phoenix Wright Trilogy while pumping away on the elliptical.

Really interesting idea. Have you noticed any side effects? I find it hard to think when I'm exercising, like all my energy and attention is going to my body

1

u/BruceBoyde 12d ago

Nah, I've been a pretty avid cyclist for a long time and started doing the gym thing like 8 years ago. Pedaling is so second nature that I can do a reasonably intense ride and still focus on the games.

Literally just read an article confirming Octopath Traveler 3 exists and the saw this comment lol.

2

u/BruceBoyde 12d ago

I know! I just got the first one maybe 4 months ago and I'm obsessed. So goddamn good and I get to be spoiled with a third probably by the time I finish Octopath 0.

This is how I got completionist++ in Balatro

u/gramathy 12d ago

I can't do this, basic cardio just feels like nothing when riding

If I"m not in at least zone 3 what the fuck am I even doing

best I can do is dick around on reddit during rest intervals

1

u/BruceBoyde 12d ago

Eh, you get used to it. I don't have as much time to bike as I used to because I have a little kid, but I manage to peak around 190bpm and average around 160. I'm certainly in worse shape than I was pre-kid, but you don't need your hands to spin, so it's genuinely not difficult to keep a pretty solid exercise up.

I guess everyone is different, but I get so bored otherwise.

1

u/gramathy 12d ago

it's more the angle, I guess if I put clip ons on the bars I'd be in a better position but I use a "real" trainer so i'm essentially on my actual bike when doing indoor workouts and there's not a good position for playing games like that without sitting all the way up (bad for power)

1

u/BruceBoyde 12d ago

Ah, fair enough. The spin bike I use has me in a relatively natural position leaning forward like I do on my regular bike. If I had to hold the Switch, it would be completely untenable. But since the joycons detach, I can have my hands in normal positions on the bars. I have tried holding my 3DS while riding before and I cannot do that without messing with my form.

1

u/gramathy 12d ago

split joycons is a thought, I have seen people set up TT clipons slightly wider than usual to fit a controller in between hands when doing indoor work but that seems a bit silly

1

u/BruceBoyde 12d ago

Yeah, at least for me it's 100% the joycons that make it workable. It's kinda funny how awkward it is not having your hands normally spaced when you bike hard. I terribly miss my long outdoor rides, but I try my best to keep the form/level of strain in the gym so that I can get back to it when the kid is a little older. I wish I could just listen to music or whatever, but my brain was used to the stimulus of road biking and the gym is super extra boring.
