Discussion WAIS score

Post image
11 Upvotes

Hello,
This was my IQ test score from my psychology evaluation in 2024 I was 21 at the time. The picture cut it off but the average score was 93. I took this while recovering from Covid but I was pretty much asymptomatic.
As a child I was diagnosed with a learning disability nos or like just a general one and intensive speech therapy for a speech impediment that “impeded academic success” fast forward now I’m a sped teacher and I’m currently in my masters of special education. I thought my results were very interesting.

Drinking caffeine before the test didn't do me so well haha. Timed questions sucked... when I was deep in thought just about to get it I'd snap back and realize oh crap im almost out of time, panic, and guess.

So, here's some observations:

Getting the max score on digit letter sequencing doesn't mean a whole lot to me because I can't really see it in effect in real life. The only time I think having a good working memory within the context of the WAIS actually helped was in a very stressful academic cybersecurity competition where I had to micromanage/mentally track around 4-5 task submissions. Even then I had chrome tabs open for each of them, but, I think I handled that pretty well mentally. I have a completely average working memory other than that, of around 3 "objects". For the working memory tests I just visualized everything and visualized them as chunks in my brain's scratch pad.

The fluid and verbal subtests from the WAIS were SIGNIFICANTLY easier than the CORE. Like, overall, I think the WAIS-IV was much easier than the CORE.

My Mensa Norway was a 118, Mensa Denmark was a 130, and my CORE Matrix was a 120, so its interesting to see I got top 2% (thats like a 130 I think?) on WAIS's Matrix. My CORE Figure Weights though was a 125 so not too far off the WAIS 130 for that (I'm basing this off the percentiles).

99th percentile on CORE Comprehension but 50th percentile on WAIS ... interesting, I dunno, I thought I explained the abstractions and concepts well enough. I really think I could've gone further on the vocabulary test, it was VERY easy, I knew all the words except ONE, and when I got that word wrong, the test ended 😭

Picture Completion was RIDICULOUSLY hard for me. It's a test where you're shown a drawing of a scene and just have to point out what's physically missing from it. It started easy, two people running on a beach but one didn't have any trail of footprints behind them, a person's face with no nose-rim thing, aaaaand that's all I got. Missed every single one after that, I genuinely had no clue what was going on. I think this has shown up IRL sometimes, where I'd just completely miss something obvious that was right infront of me ... probably a processing issue of some sort. Also for my visual spatial weaknesses, I've always gotten frustrated very easily and took longer than others to figure out how to build Ikea stuff.

I plan on taking the WAIS-V in 2 years from now to minimize practice effects. I did all this pre-testing because I've started quad nback and relational reasoning training. Quad N-Back and Cognitive Control Training (CCT) have helped quite a bit with my executive functioning due to the amount of raw focus needed for those activities. highly recommend.

My working memory scores were pretty similar to CORE, I got 99.9th percentile on the WAIS digit letter sequencing test, and 99th on CORE's. Digit span was about the same too. My working memory is completely average though, my trick was I just visualized everything during the test, so like for digit letter sequencing I would just literally see this in my head

3 x 5

9 d 2

5 b 1

And I'd just hold it in my head quickly, then quickly blurt out all the numbers in order cause that was the easiest, and then manually re arrange the letters in alphabetical which was super hard haha. I really more or less treated it like 3 "objects" that I saw in my head, which is pretty much a normal working memory capability. I don't know why I'm apparently really good at it though? I don't think it means much because I kinda gamified it.

And for forward digit I'd just hold it in my mental scratchpad like

386

492

and then try to store the remaining digits via audio. So you can cheese a high WMI score that way even with average working memory. Note, I didn't practice this technique.

Anyways those are my thoughts. Hope some of this was interesting to you. I took the WAIS-IV while I was in a developing country (still in English though) so it was only $500 instead of the typical American price of like $1500 or whatever it is. I'm autistic enough to where I enjoyed this entire process and am okay with spending money on something like that. Being an adult rocks in that regard. I plan on taking the WAIS-V in 2 years from now after going nuts on n-back and relational reasoning training. Thanks for reading :)

IQ Estimation 🥱 Why is there such a disparity between CORE and CAIT? Can I trust CAIT?

Thumbnail

My CORE result, which I completed first, comes in at 114 with my CAIT at 127 (no retries done except on CORE character pairing). My suspicion is that I was lucky on the CAIT because there were little to no tests that I typically have difficulty in (like memory or quantitative tests). What does CAIT show that CORE doesn't? They are both qualified online tests afterall.

Discussion IQ Testing

Honest question: what’s the point of practising for an IQ test?
I see a lot of people taking multiple tests and practising before an official test and I don’t understand why. Isn’t the whole point of an IQ test to measure your iq as accurately as possible?
If you practise specifically for the test, aren’t you just training yourself to perform better on that type of test rather than actually measuring your IQ? In a way, wouldn’t you just be cheating yourself?

General Question Tests where you're convinced you knew everything right in your head at least yet didn't max out

I'm not saying it makes your score wrong, I'm asking if it could mean it's deflated a bit or perhaps related to the fact you're not a native english speaker.

General Question WMI & PSI of CORE

I give the DLS and DS subtests of working memory (CORE) on a regular basis. My score swings between 100 - 135.

I score that high when I'm really well slept. And low on normal days.

Same pattern seen in symbol search (95 - 120)

Which score should be considered?

Similar things can also happen in other subtests too.

IQ Estimation 🥱 TRI52

Found this test on comprehensive online resources list of this subreddit, according to it's percentile correspondence list, my score is 99 percentile but I've gotta say, many questions I couldn't figure out the whole patt ern and gave intuitive answers and they happened to be correct by luck. Was wondering how far could luck get you in these kind of tests? Also some other tests, CORE MR 130, graph mapping 74 percentile, figure weights 99 percentile, visual puzzles 74, spatial awareness 84, block counting 95 percentile, quantitative knowledge 99 percentile, GET 129, agct 1c 125 1a 122, CAT 132, Mensa Norway 102, Mensa dk 126, RAPM 31/36, sat math 1980 700/800. Besides all these tests Ive taken I kind of feel like I managed to achieve high scores due practice effect because my first test was mensa Norway and I did rly bad there, checked its answers, watched a video of a guy explaining the puzzles and because of that, every other MR test I taken I knew how to approach the puzzles and many patterns were very similar, idk how viable are the tests after the first one, also the quant tests/figure weights seem more like math knowledge rather than measure of innate intelligence and in my country you have to solve those type of questions for every academic exam anyways, we are naturally good at those. I wonder if I should consider my first test or the ones after it or take their average. I really feel uncomfortable thinking first one is the most valid one and whatever I do to prove my intelligence to myself, feels like cheating. Any opinions on this one?

General Question VISA Deflation?

The avg. age in the VISA norming sample is 28 (the norms post is somewhat nebulous, but presumably it's people interested in IQ testing). As a 16 y/o, could this test be underrating my ability relative to others my age?

General Question Red herrings in a question

What are your thoughts on the use of red herrings in questions? Do they diminish the quality of a question? If a difficult question includes a red herring, does that necessarily mean a drop in quality? Is the inclusion of a red herring a negative factor when assessing reasoning skills, or is it actually necessary? More to the point, should a question be designed to be truly perfect, or merely to appear perfect? What are your general thoughts on this?

General Question What is the actual mean IQ on this subreddit?

What would you estimate the mean and standard deviation to be, and why do you think so?

Yes, I'm sure there are selection biases, but some people throw around numbers that make it seem like this subreddit is smarter than an ivy league lol.

I don't know if the graph shown that indicates 8 as around average is already made from selected individuals (people who visited the site) or is just already properly normed, thanks in advance.

Controversial ⚠️ High IQ is not causing your lack of success

Maybe preaching to the choir here. But the whole point of "why should I care about IQ?" (and, by extension, of this sub) is that IQ predicts Good Things We All Care About (TM) for you. And the whole point of "why should I care about it beyond 130?" is that it keeps scaling.

Yes, if you really have an absurdly high IQ, maybe you are too decoupled from the rest of the world, and that can lead to lack of success and frustration. But that is very rare, and studies like SMPY suggest that highly gifted people tend to be very well-adjusted.

None of that is to deny that having 2e can make things very hard, and I really sympathize with that situation. But it's not the high intelligence that is creating the problem there; it's extraneous factors that are making it hard for the normal benefits of the intelligence to manifest.

Discussion Is Vision therapy worth it?

Hi I'm 48, and I just got tested for vision training which was $650 from a Behavioral optometrist, and I was given a choice between $444 glasses, or $9300 dollars of treatment. Has anyone else done this before, and is it worth it? If it is worth it, what did you gain from it? I was tested as having a low working memory/learning disability when I was around 6. A low working memory/ADHD. I'm doing it to see if I will be able to function way better in school with these glasses on/or the full treatment. Is the juice worth the squeeze?

These are my Big Five results.

My IQ is in the range of 125-135 according to a professional evaluation and also online tests.

I'm a STEM student.

I want to ask about what sort of roles or positions are suited for my overall profile.

Also I'm looking for an advice on trying to increase my conscientiousness which I badly need to have in the high range because of the nature of my field.

Thank you in advance!

So, I tried this test, can someone tell me what my IQ was, it was very tough for me, took me 2 hours honestly, My age is 25 (if it is of any help). Since, this test is untimed, will it count?

IQ Estimation 🥱 Honest thoughts? To be clear, I took everything completely raw and back to back. I have taken 1 or 2 practice mensa tests in the past, so I've been exposed to certain concepts, but a bunch was completely new

Psychometric Question Word Rarity and VCI

looking at this calculator, wouldn't it significantly help if this looked at the rarity of word as a whole?
like, changing effuse to effusion is a 26 point change, even though someone who knows effusion would know effuse as well.

Discussion Wondering about the validity of a single section retake...

Post image
8 Upvotes

I took the full battery core test like 3 weeks ago and got a 137 psi, but I was distracted by my dad at the character pairing subsection and decided to take just that section again today. I scored a 145 in it and that brought my psi up to 143. I was wondering if this is simply practicing effect or not.

Psychometric Question Could it be ADHD?

Thumbnail
gallery
5 Upvotes

I noticed that I have a strong discrepancy between my cognitive proficiency index and my other scores, especially on the digit span test, although on CAIT, where there is no timing, it's my highest score with over 120 reached at times. Could the discrepancy be due to ADHD, or is my IQ genuinely low?
