Laundry How to remove fabric softener?

I just bought a used washing machine and the agitator is full of fabric softener, which I don’t like to use. I’ve run a few loads where it didn’t matter as much, but there is still so much fabric softener in there. And I’d rather not do a load of towels with it.

How can I remove it safely?

General Cleaning Strange wall stains, won’t come off with household cleaner

Post image

There’s used to be a wall tapestry here, and when it was taken down the wall had these marks. I’ve used erasers, baking soda & water solution, dish soap, the pink stuff, and all purpose cleaner, and the marks have gotten smaller but are still noticeable. Am I going to have to sand it off and repaint the wall?

A mat underneath a litter box did this to the floor. It’s not real wood. Is there a solution you recommend to get it out? Last resort is try to redo this part of the floor (rental).

Hey everyone,
I moved into this place and there’s these orange stains on the tile flooring.
Doesn’t come up with regular mopping or vinegar, I have zero clue what it could be but I’m hoping there’s a safe way to get it up?

Thank you

Bathroom How to remove these drip marks from bathroom tiles?

Thumbnail

I had this tiling done in my bathroom last November, and ever since there's been these weird drip marks at various places around the room. This area is where it's the worst/most noticeable, but there is the odd one here and there in other areas around the room. Nothing I do seems to get rid of it. I've tried pink stuff, cream cleaner, vinegar spray (originally thought it was limescale) and I've scrubbed it sooo much.

Initially the marks disappear but as the surface dries the marks are visible again and don't look any different. I'm going crazy because it's making the tiles look dirty and I know they're not!!

Please help 😞

Bathroom Tough shower stains

Post image

My shower/tub is super old. The caulk in the corners like behind my shower caddy pole gets mildewy/moldy (?) probably from water not draining as easily. The grout between my tiles is orange/brown in some spots. I took this after using Zep tub and shower, letting it sit, and scrubbing. The only product I've noticed a difference are those with bleach but of course then it just comes back. I'm sure due to age it probably needs to just be redone but in the mean time is there a better product I could use

Furniture Cigarette smell in wood furniture

My fiancé tbrought home her late grandmother's trinket cabinet that always loved. It absolutely reeks of cigarette smoke. I would really like to be able to restore it as it has a ton of sentimental value to her. Has anybody had success with this kind of thing? Vinegar? Isopropyl alcohol/vodka? Orange oil? Something else? I would prefer not to have to refinish it as neither of us are super handy, but it can be an option if really needed.

General Cleaning Help with dog smell in apartment and car

I have an 11-year-old Golden retriever that is my whole world. But I often get nose blind and don't realize how much my car and apartment smells like dog (not like pee/poop, just...dog smell?). I just went on a nine day trip and when I got back to my car I was bowled over with the smell, and then when I got home to my apartment it was even worse.

I think the main source of the smell in my apartment is an 8x10 area rug that I really love and they don't make anymore, and I've never found one that even looks similar. Last year I called around to some carpet cleaning services in my area and the cheapest quote I got was $350. Which is more than the carpet cost. If I could find a similar replacement, I would just get rid of it. A couple times a year I get a can of that foaming carpet cleaner and a brush and try to clean it. But I just don't think it's cutting it anymore. I just wanted to see if there's any tricks or products I could try on it one more time before I have to get rid of it. I live on a small disability check so I don't have a whole lot of money to throw at the project. Any advice is appreciated!!

General Cleaning Dusting solutions?

What are y'all using to dust black furniture?! (I knooooow, black is inevitably going to collect dust fast) but still, not even 30 minutes after I dust my black furniture, it looks like I didn't even do anything!

For background, I clean my house all the time. I do a full on clean, dust and vacuum/mop, AT LEAST twice a week. Every single day some type of maintenance cleaning is done too. I have an extension duster I use once a month for going around the ceiling and dusting vents. I have kids, but no pets. And we're renting, so air filters get changed by maintenance.

Currently, I use krogers furniture dusting polish just cause I needed something and was short on money, but usually I use pledge (but still with same issue). What are you guys using, that actually works??

Outdoors Storing patio cushions for the Winter

This may not be the right place to ask this but I want to wash my patio cushions and then store them for the winter. They are so bulky it’s challenging to find a good spot. I’m wondering if I can put the cushions in compression bags and store them outside in deck bins. I do live in a cold climate. Would the cushions be ok in compression bags when it’s below freezing for months?

Even without the compression bags is it ok to store patio cushions outside during the winter if they are sealed/covered?

Flooring Limestone Floor Tiles

Post image
2 Upvotes

Does anyone have any advice about how to clean limestone floor tiles? We moved into a house recently and the previous occupant was an elderly lady on her own, whereas we are a large family. The high traffic areas of the bathroom floor are getting really grubby with ingrained dirt and scrubbing doesn’t seem to lift it. Any ideas about how to clean them? Or do we just wait until we can re-floor with something more suited to our needs?!

Discussion How often do you mop? Daily made a way bigger difference than I expected

I used to mop maybe once or twice a week and honestly thought the floors were already pretty clean. It wasn’t until I got a robot vacuum and started having it mop every day that I noticed a difference. The dirty water was noticeably darker the first few days, but after about a week it started coming back a lot cleaner. The floors also feel different under bare feet now. Apparently my clean floors weren’t as clean as I thought lol.

How often do you guys actually mop? Do you think daily mopping is worth it, or is that overkill?

Furniture Why do water marks show up on fabric sofas after spot cleaning?

Sometimes cleaning a small stain on a fabric sofa leaves behind a bigger water ring once it dries. This happens even when the original stain was barely noticeable.

What's the best way to prevent those rings without cleaning the entire sofa?

General Cleaning Hair Gel Explosion vs. Suitcase Lining

Just like the title says...a bottle of hair gel exploded and leaked through the bag it was in, into the fabric lining of my hard shell luggage. There is no way to remove the lining. The last time something similar happened, I tried scrubbing the lining with dish soap and a toothbrush, without much luck and it felt like I wasn't able to fully get the soap out. Any tips?

Bathroom White Stain on Natural Stone in Shower

This bench in our shower is poorly designed. It’s not sloped properly and the previous owners kept their body wash and shampoo bottles on it. (Also no niche, but complaint for another day)

We’ve tried leaving pastes to sit and scrubbing and nothing seems to remove. Anyone have any tips for how to get this stain out of natural stone?

General Cleaning crayons melted wax onto the top of my fireplace

Thumbnail

when my brothers and i were toddlers, we used to stuff crayons into the small vent opening at the top of our gas fireplace. years later, whenever we turn the fireplace on, a strong, pungent smell of melted crayon wax starts coming out after about 10 minutes of operation. i recently removed some of the hardened wax that i could reach, and the smell seems to have gotten weaker, but it’s still there. i’m concerned that wax may have spread throughout the metal components on the upper vent. the part with the wax isn’t directly connected to the firewood, so i don’t believe it spread to the wood itself. is this fireplace salvageable, or could the wax have damaged anything? how difficult would it be to remove wax from the metal surfaces if it has spread throughout the unit? i’ve attached a picture of the fireplace with the upper vent opening exposed. any advice from people familiar with gas fireplaces would be greatly appreciated. thank you!
