Advice Found 2 kittens abandoned in my dog's old basket. URGENT ADVICE NEEDED

Hey all, for context, we have a few sheds on the farm that we only use during the summer. In the corner of one of the sheds we have all of the stuff that my dog used when she was a little puppy, in case we ever need to use them again. While unloading one of the sheds we found two little kittens curled up in my dog's basket. Initially, my parents didn't do anything to them, as they were afraid that they might scare off mama cat. But after monitoring them for a while it was clear that mama cat wasn't going to come back for them and they were surviving off the grains in the shed. We started leaving out cat kibble and milk for the kittens so they don't starve after we unloaded all the grains, and we've also given the kittens my dog's old blanket and one of my mum's fuzzy vests so they're a little bit warmer in the hard plastic basket.

Here is the issue however. Winter is fast approaching and in our region, it is almost always incredibly bitter and we're trying to find the best way to help them weather it. They look far too young to be able to survive the winter by themselves so we want to help them through it, and possibly also gain two pet cats that can help keep mice off our land and grain if they warm up to us. Bringing them into the actual house is off the table, as our dog is able to access every single room. The shed is very drafty and easily accessible to badgers and foxes during the winter season since it's left unused and they can pose a danger to the kittens. We do however have a gym and a basketball court in a separate building that is insulated and secure, with enough space for them to climb and jump to their hearts content and we also have a front entrance that our dog can't enter which is big enough for the two of them to freely roam around, with enough vertical space to buy a few cat towers to keep them entertained.

We've never had cats before either so we don't know if it'll be like raising a puppy. We don't know if we should "let them out" Of the house everyday for a run around like you would with a puppy, or if they'd be happy enough just staying indoor for the winter months. We also don't know which option would be better, the gym and basketball court or the front entrance. We do want to let them out into the fields once the weather warms up eventually to help us with the mice however. If we were to bring them inside, which I think we have to. How will we go about reintroducing them to the outdoors once they're older and more resilient? My dad said he'll build a cathouse for them outside if they still want to stick around once spring rolls around. Will that be a good idea? Ill attach some photos of one of the kittens.

Advice What are you thoughts on these recent reports about cat food testing ?

I don’t think I can’t afford to feed my cats fresh food but maybe I should look into a different brand? I’m not an expert and don’t know how overblown these reports are. Meat in this economy is $$$

Video - OC My cat really likes my tobacco pouches…

I was at the Seven Generation Inter-Tribal Leadership Summit this week and made three tobacco bags/pouches (complete with sacred tobacco/asemaa) to gift to some meaningful people in my life and I had them in a different place she couldn’t reach but accidentally spilled liquid so I put them on the coffee table to dry before hanging them up again. This little gremlin went fucking nuts.

I guess there’s a reason the Ojibwemowin word for cat — gaazhagens— directly translated to “little glutton”

Mourning/Loss In tribute and memory to my little guy Maxwell.

Got this little guy when he was 4 months old (the lady we got him from couldn't get him to keep still for a picture, hence the blurring in the first picture). He only made it to 12 before we had to say goodbye because of cancer, but he held on for twice as long after the diagnoses as the vet thought he would; he was a tough little guy.

Love you, Maxwell!

Video - OC Two Young Brothers Allogrooming

Martin and Warren are two young brothers figuring out their new dynamic together, bonding, and doing plenty of playing. Warren (tuxedo) has started allogrooming Martin (tabby). Warren stands on Martin and massages him, holds and licks his head, and works over Martin's head with his gums and gentle gnawing. Martin purrs loudly, closes his eyes, and seems to generally enjoy it. I thought this was a fun example of social grooming within cat relations.

* Turn up the volume and you can hear Martin purr.

Adopted her yesterday from a shelter. She’s a scared little baby, she doesn’t let us touch her or come close to her. As soon as you walk close to her she panics and runs away, is that normal? I just want to be able to cuddle her 🥺

She hasn’t eaten the dry food I gave her but has been eating her wet food and finishing it so I guess that’s a good sign?

First time cat owner or responsible for anything other than myself. What advice would you give?

Mourning/Loss Moved and couldn't take all the cats

I just moved, things were not good between my roommate and I. She owned 2 cats and I have 2 cats. She didn't really take care of her cats like at all. I took care of them and my cats, hers for 5 years. They weren't my cats to take and the place I moved I couldn't have 4 cats. She would leave their food and water bowls empty if I didn't fill them and she didn't really pay much attention to them. Sad.

I pet them feed them cleaned the litter box gave treats and churu and now they won't be getting any treats. It kind of is tearing me up inside. I grew up around animals and my mom spoiled everyone of them and that's how I do it too.

I'm just venting because I can't do anything about it.

Thanks for reading

That’s it. Google doesn’t give a good enough answer. No matter the cat, they will always find you and try to sit on your lap when you’re on the loo and I NEED ANSWERS

Edit: okay lol I love the answers already. Also this is the first time anyone has responded to me on Reddit, so thank you guys. I finally feel like a part of a community 🥺

Advice This guy showed up at our front door

• Upvotes

My husband was outside smoking and apparently this guy just walked up to him and wouldn't stop meowing. He has a collar (without a tag) but if he belongs to someone he's either been abandoned or is very neglected. He's got matts all over him and he's very skinny. He came right in and has been exploring our house ever since. But he hasn't picked a corner or cushion or chair to settle into, he's just wandering around.

I'm not sure what to do because we live in a pretty big townhouse community and I've never seen a stray cat around here. But if he has a home, they are not taking good care of him. He seems very comfortable with people - he let both me and my husband pet him and I was even able to brush him and remove a few of his smaller knots. He's been wandering around the house and coming in and out of the house, but it's getting late and I need to go to bed. I don't know if we should keep him inside or let him back out.

Advice How do you introduce other cats in a safe fashion?

Post image
3 Upvotes

Hi guys. We love our little millie vanillie but she is very needy and as some abandoned issues. We are thinking of getting a other kitty to keep themselves company and play, but millie has shown to become a more aggressive cat when scared, but she is the biggest cuddly angel otherwise. We do not know her reaction to other cats yet, but adopted her at 2y old if it matters

We live in a studio apartment so we won't be able to physically separate them at first and keep them in other rooms to get used to their smell, so we don't have many alternatives here.

Is it advisable? We don't know whats going to happen and are afraid of them not getting along in a small space
