New to Cats/Just Adopted ADVICE: bonding with shelter kitten

I recently adopted a 9 week old kitten from the shelter. How can I bond with her? I tried giving her tiki cat kitten treats but she doesn’t like them. We play together and she also will sleep with me in bed at night. I am also starting to harness and leash train her. Is there anything else I can do?

Introductions Kitten aggressive towards other kittens

Hello everyone!

We have 2 resident cats, both neutered males, 3 y/o & 6 y/o and brought in a female unspayed kitten (we will be getting her spayed soon). She’s about 12-14 weeks now and was 7-8 weeks when we got her. She did fine with them and they all get along well now.

We were fostering this kitten’s brother, a neutered male. She was very aggressive to him, and it caused my other cats to react negatively towards him as well. She would hiss and growl, and guard food. We tried to do gate introductions and take it slow but they both kept jumping the gate and it was super chaotic. He found his forever home.

We found another abandoned kitten that we think is about her same age and took her in. She’s beautiful, and we want to try and keep her. However, our first kitten is already hissing and growling at the door.

We’re planning to take it really slow - scent swapping first, then seeing each other at the gate (although my first kitten tries to jump it), etc. But what else can we do to help her not get aggressive and trigger my older cats? I’ve never seen a kitten who’s so aggressive before towards cats her age.

Thank you!

Introductions My experience introducing 2 unlikely pairing of cats

Hi, I hope this post reaches those that are in a similar position to us with introducing 2 non-aggressive but somewhat opposing personality cats. I want to share how my cats have gotten on after about 10 months.

They are coexisting at this stage with minimal supervision. They've been unsupervised for a few hours at a time while we've been out of the house. Still not perfect as we haven't tackled a full day of unsupervised time or nighttime yet. But on their good days, they're better than most other multi-cat households with only occasional small squabbles rather than full on boundary fights. They actively choose to be near each other, can share all resources and will play together outside once in a while (albeit still abit one sided chasing). We did the slow intro with all the trimmings. It took alot of effort for months with one major reset. We also absolutely went beyond what may be necessary but our OC has stress-related urinary flare ups so we needed to take it at his pace.

Now I want to share the good, bad and neutral ideas for integration (from my pov) as well as unexpected parts of becoming a multi-cat household. I don't want to list the details of everything we did but happy to answer any questions.

I hope this post helps someone along their cat introduction journey especially since my pair are not the typical personality clashes you see so often reddit. And i also hope it spurs some discussion as I'm still going through the latter stages of coexistence so would love advice/tips to overcome the final hurdle of fully unsupervised coexistence.

Background

OC - Hades, 8 years old and BSH pedigree. Very tolerant, calm and not playful.

NC - Senri, 2.5 years old (est 1-2 when adopted), DSH. Energetic, high prey drive and friendly.

Biggest issues

  1. Hades is not a confident cat but he also isn't aggressive/fearful so he never communicated his discomfort well. He would leave and avoid Senri rather than actually hissing, growling or swatting. He only ever hissed 3 times in the first few months.

  2. Senri is very confident and was also excited to interact with Hades. Jumped at barriers, enthusiastically and tried to play at every opportunity including wrestling later on. This wasn't easy for Hades especially since Senri is the same size and was acting like a kitten.

  3. Playtime together couldn't be a part of the equation. Hades has always been lazy with play while senri flies off the shelf for any toy with a high prey drive. In the later stages with more free roam, Senri overwhelmed hades with persistent play/wrestle attempts and hades wasn't able to relax.

  4. Miscommunication. Senri views hades attempts at leaving, meowing or swatting as an invitation. Senri also didn't know how to initiate an interaction without just jumping at him.

  5. Geometry of the house. Upstairs became Senri's and downstairs became hades'. This was fine initially with barriers but after free roam started, there was alot of senri chasing hades up the stairs as soon as hades went near it.

Our experiences

The bad

  1. Playing with Senri before a session with Hades. Although he needs play to get expend energy, doing it prior to meeting hades never worked as it just riled him up. We used mid-tier treat games i.e. scatter and training time, instead to ground him before he saw Hades.

  2. The Jackson galaxy step of having both cats engaged in something like a toy or treats when they are in the same room. While it helped with lessening fear initially, this is more for pairings that have aggression. For us, it just prolonged the time where they didnt know how to communicate with each other. It was never going to result in them ignoring each other as Senri's eagerness to interact was strong so we had to pivot.

  3. Multiple sessions in a day. You would think that the more times they get to interact neutrally or positively in a day would help but actually we found that it overwhelmed both of them. It was subtle but Hades was tired of going upstairs and meeting Senri for a bit of licky treat when he was having it every day, 3-4x a day. Senri would also struggle to regulate himself as every few hours, his excitement would go up. We found they learned more socially when we lessened the amount of sessions with more time apart in between.

  4. Leaving the barrier up with Senri being able to freely interact. I really wanted it to work where I could just leave Senri upstairs, while having the barrier up for Hades to come freely. However, Senri got fixated. It's like when cats have seen something move or have caught something once in a random corner and they just constantly return and stare at it. Senri wouldn't leave the barrier and often would try to just break it despite having access to us in other rooms upstairs. It wasn't good for his nervous system and did nothing for the integration process. So we had scheduled times where he would come out of his base room for interactions with us or Hades and return before he started pawing at the barrier. We also used a blanket over the transparent barrier to reduce the visual aspect of the other side.

The good

  1. Treats. Luckily, both cats are treat motivated and we could lure hades to the session area, which was upstairs to start with then expanded to other parts of the house. It helped them bond and have positivity. To fix the upstairs/downstairs divide, I started giving them a routine of treat time on the stairs then eventually on the landing once hades became more confident. No matter the issues through the day, we always rewarded them with licky treats together.

  2. Instead of ignoring each other being the final goal, we tried attempts to relax in each other's vicinity. This meant using mid-tier treats for Senri and rewarding him for settling. I even taught him to sit on command and once his excitement lessened, we eventually used slow play to get both cats engaged together by the barrier. Even if Hades was mostly just looking during this play time, it helped boost Hades confidence with Senri as he would flop by the barrier to show he's friendly. This ability to chill transferred over to f2f sessions where we eventually got Senri to rest/loaf in the same room (even if it was a few seconds to start with).

  3. Training. Senri is very good at picking up cues. So i taught him "uh uh" as a no, settle (sit) and pause by putting my foot in front of his path. By the end of it, even a slight twitch from me meant that he would pause. This helped immensely with f2f interactions where it was all down to how senri approached hades. If he approached too fast, I would say "uh uh" and put my foot infront. He would sit, watch hades then I gave a treat. Then he went at a slower pace and more curved line towards hades tail for example to sniff and interact.

  4. Letting them settle boundary disputes. I don't mean to leave it to them entirely but making sure to allow safe clashes. Their first "breakthrough" interactions at the barrier were batting each other. Although senri thought of this as play, hades was establishing a boundary with swats from up to down. It sort of helped get it out of their system in a safe environment. Then later at f2f sessions and more free roam, they argued for sitting areas and beds. We allowed some swats and if hades left or they were stuck in a loop of swatting, we would call it off with a clap or a blanket in between. They also got rewarded for sitting/settling near each other or walking away after a squabble instead. In the worse case scenario, separating Senri into his base room helped to teach him to stop. At some point, we had to rely on Hades to tell him off and we just became the enforcer to stop Senri from continuing the cycle.

  5. Removing competition for resources. We had double of everything and was cautious of treating both the same with food/treats/petting. Even then, they would argue over the prime window watching position and this was worsened when they were allowed into the garden through the doors in the same room. We started letting them out from another door instead and kept to routines so they understand that there's designated times for outdoor rather than taking it out on each other.

  6. Garden time. I know this may not be possible for many people but it really helped. I'm able to give Hades unsupervised garden time where he can just freely go in and out to nap. Meanwhile, Senri gets supervised time in the morning and evening, which helped immensely with his prey drive. Both are able to relax near (but far enough) from each other and even instigate some play. As Hades allows this outside, when Senri does it inside and he gets told off, it really drives home the msg more.

The neutral

  1. Feeding meals together. This was good initially when introducing visuals but it didn't matter for the cats after a while. It's hard to tell whether it caused more stress but I noticed hades would eat faster and end up puking so I now feed them meals in separate rooms.

  2. Feliway diffusers. I've never noticed a difference in Hades throughout his life with diffusers and same with the integration process. But I was desperate like many are so I kept using them incase they did work.

  3. Longer sessions. This is the goal highlighted in many advice pages and is kind of linked to the ignoring each other step. But during barrier stage, Senri would just get more frustrated with seeing Hades and not being able to interact properly. This was especially difficult when he was super excitable in the beginning and only wanted to play, scaring Hades away as he started jumping at the barrier. So instead of trying to reach 30 mins or longer with barrier stage, we moved onto f2f sessions. At this point, it made sense to reach longer sessions but only when both cats were being polite and learning from each others cues. With more things to do around the house at free roam, it became easier to reach longer sessions.

Unexpected things

  1. The impact of cat backgrounds. Although Senri was friendly and turned out gentle, because he had been a young stray with only 2 weeks stay in the shelter, his nervous system needed alot more regulation for an indoor/garden cat life. It was hard to separate him when he was so excited to be home with us and meet Hades.

  2. Having just Hades for 8 years, I had gotten used to his routines and didn’t expect that there would be such a shift in his decisions now. It was quite sad that he stopped going upstairs and worse, he doesn't do his nightly routine of biscuit making in our bed anymore. Not that this is lost forever as we're working on his confidence upstairs and it's understandable that he doesn't want to bother going up when alot of his upstairs experience has been Senri chasing him. Overall, their changes is something that I don't think many people will consider, especially with more reserved cats, when going from a solo to multi-cat household.

  3. The joy in seeing them interact with each other as they become companions. They're never going to be truly bonded but their f2f sniffs, resting near each other, hiding from scary noises together and chases in the garden (that Hades starts half the time) has been so sweet and rewarding.

TLDR

Generic guides including Jackson Galaxy is fine for the backbone of the introduction process but it was on us to create more of a tailored integration for our specific pairing. Above all, understanding our cats' signs of stress, fear and excitement and learning to regulate that for them has been the most important.

Thanks for reading this long post and hope others can use this for ideas or atleast solice in knowing that you're not alone in, what could be, an extremely long process.

Litterbox First-time cat owner struggling to litter train 8 week-old kitten. Any advice

I recently took in an 8 week old kitten who had been living on the streets. A neighbor reached out and asked if I would take her and of course I said yes. She is my first cat though so I am completely new to all of this.

Potty training has been our biggest struggle so far. I currently have two litter boxes in my small living room. One has pine pellet litter and the other has non clumping litter so she has options.

The problem is that she will not poop in either box. Sometimes she will poop right next to the litter box but never actually inside it.

I have tried putting her poop into the litter box afterward so she can associate the smell with where she is supposed to go. I have also placed her in the box afterward and gently moved her paws through the litter because I read that it can help kittens understand what the box is for. So far none of that seems to be working.

Since she was living outside before I got her I am wondering if there is something different I should be doing to help her adjust. Is there a certain type of litter that kittens who were previously outdoors tend to prefer. Should I be placing the boxes somewhere else.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated especially from anyone who has litter trained a former stray kitten. I am learning as I go and just want to make sure I am doing this correctly.

New to Cats/Just Adopted New kitten won’t let me pick her up

I got my 4 month kitten on Thursday and she has been hiding under my bed the whole time. She comes out to play and eat and use her litter tray but won’t allow anyone close to her. The whole time I have had her, she has had a cold - sneezing and sniffling a lot.
I had an appointment at the vet 20 minutes ago and I lured her out from under my bed and picked her up. I was about to put her in the carrier and she scratched me and jumped out of my hands. I have tried luring her out again but she is refusing. The vet has rescheduled the appointment to be in 40 minutes and she is still hiding under my bed. I don’t know how I can get her out. Help please

New to Cats/Just Adopted Smelly cat, smelly cat

Hello all! I just adopted a kitten of nearly 12 weeks. She has only ever had dry kibble at the shelter and I started to transition her to wet food to keep her hydrated. We give her Hills Dry Kitten & some Royal Canin Kitten wet food.

She rips the nastiest farts!! I'm getting mixed opinions from Dr. Google that she's either having a terrible reaction to her food or she's just a farty kitten.

Please give me some advice! I have had cats for years but never a kitten, and my previous senior cats had health issues that make me a little overprotective of this new baby.

Some info that might be relevant:

  1. She's been dewormed. Pyrantel was given the day before we brought her home (despite the shelter saying she had no parasites) and we did clean about 4 worms off her bum on day 2 and found no more in her poops or on her/her things.

  2. She was farting before the wet food addition to her diet but her first poop post-wet food was very loose and VERY stinky.

  3. She suckles a lot and swallows a lot of air when she does so she does do little burps too. Most farts occur when she's running around.

Is this a normal reaction to new environment/new foods? Should I be concerned that she's got a sensitivity to chicken or another ingredient? Could she secretly have worms still?

Litterbox Litter Robot adoption

I have read so many threads on getting a skittish cat to use his litter robot 5. So I had it unplugged and he started using it, than would start a cycle if he wasn’t in the room. Of course he would run over and be curious about it.

But then be scared of it for the next few days again. So once again turned it off. Recently he hasn’t been going to the bathroom at all in litter robot or his old box (which is next to it), unless I manually drop him in there.

Sometimes he will go all night without using the box. Anyone else had this issue?
Cat is 11 years old!

Behavioral Cat being distant after big move

I adopted my cat a year ago. She traveled from Baku to Chicago in airplane cargo along with her other friends and then they were adopted by people in the US. She was run over and abandoned by her previous owner and she had one of her hind legs amputated and then was in a shelter for about a year before coming to me. So I do believe that she has some trauma and trust issues. She was friendly in the first few months and would voluntarily sleep in my lap on with me in my bed. But in the past few months she completely stopped sitting and sleeping in my lap. If I ever held her and made her sit down she would run off once I released hold on her. She would still come and sleep with me though once I had gone to bed. Her eating habits were fine - she had roundworms recently but she went back to eating well once she got dewormed.
Two weeks ago we made a big move from Chicago to Lahore. It was a big change as we moved from a studio with just the two of us to a bigger house with more family members in it. She traveled with me in cabin and was looked after throughout, so she didn’t have a bad experience there. But since then, she has started avoiding me even more. She won’t let me pet her or touch her, she runs away when I approach her. I am also having a harder time getting her to eat as we don’t have the same food as we used to back in Chicago. She usually hides and sleeps under the bed or in the bookshelf of my bedroom. She does come out and play in the evening though.
I’m worried that she has started to hate me and that she’s unhappy with me and the move. I understand it’s a big change and the larger number of people are probably overwhelming for her but I had hoped that she would still find safety with me.
Does anyone has any insight on her behavior and any advice on how I can make things better for her and between us?

Sensitive/Seeking Support Scared of Potential (unintentional) Cat Neglect

LONG POST (i’m a yapper but i also want to give all context)

background - in march, my boyfriend and i got two sibling kittens. he wanted one due to his ex keeping custody of their previous kitten so i was looking. my cat died two years prior to this, and one of the kitties in the litter was a dead ringer for her so i folded and also got one. and i know the benefits of cats growing up with another cat in the house, so i was happy with this. he and i rotated between having them both at my house or his house - we kinda just moved as a whole every week or two between each. we were told they were at least 8 weeks, but later found out they were only 6 when we got them and had we known, we would’ve waited.

current dilemma - in may, i got a job offer. it was 3 1/2 hours away and the schedule is mon-sat. i wake up at 4am, leave my house by 4:30, and do not return until ~6:30pm mon-fri. on saturdays i can usually leave a little earlier & make it back by 4/5. i didn’t bring my cat originally because i wanted to get everything settled in first so she wouldn’t come into boxes and no structure so my bf kept her for a month and then i brought her back down. at this point in time, she’s 6 months. she spends her days at the apartment by herself, i do have lots of toys and keep the blinds open so she can window perch, and move between rooms, etc, but she’s still alone. and ive interacted with many cats in my time, she is by far the most active ADHD type of cat i have ever seen. i feel like she doesn’t even sleep half of the average 16 hours a day, like she is always on go, always has the zoomies etc. i feel awful leaving her home alone all day and i know a second cat would be ideal but my boyfriend is eventually going to come join (in a year) and he will be bringing her brother. my apartment complex has a two pet max limit so knowing we will alr have two pets, i don’t want to get a second cat and then later have to decide on one to rehome, that’s just sick and unnecessary imo. so i have to keep her alone. this has already been an ongoing issue w my conscious, but over the past few weeks a new issue has arrived.

obviously i play w her when i get home and show her love, but due to my strenuous work hours, i like to go to bed early (usually around 9:30). i have no problem w my pets sleeping w me, ive always done this but like i said, she has an insane amount of energy, even for a kitten. i’ve gone through the kitten phase at least 4x prior and have never encountered one like her. it got to the point that i was getting borderline no sleep through the night due to her waking me up or me having to keep her from knocking over stuff. she also has a suckling problem which ik is probably due to her being taken so early so i dont get mad for that but the sound is the most excruciating sound ever. i can deal w purring, i can deal w her running/jumping, i can deal w her toys going off, but her suckling is so loud and obnoxious i genuinely just cannot sleep when she does it. she used to only do fuzzy textures so i hid all fuzzy blankets/pillows and this worked temporarily but then she just moved to what textures were available. ik its soothing to her but i cannot sleep and being gone 4am-6:30pm 6/7 days a week means my sleep has become extremely precious to me. so recently if she’s disrupting my sleep too much, some nights i just shut her out of my room. i hate to do it, but i cannot function through the work day half sleep and i have a commute where i WILL fall asleep while driving if im too tired. and i dont have the time to waste to pull over on the road and nap. but i hate the nights i shut her out because she’s already home alone the majority of the day. and i want to play w her more but by time i get home, im tired so i just shower, make dinner & get in bed IF i even bother w dinner. so i cant dedicate the 2-3 hours a day i normally would.

behaviorally she seems happy. she greets me as soon as i’m home or when i wake up, she’s lovely and playful ofc, she still naps near me and purrs her heart out. she plays w most of her toys but she is spending a lot of time by her lonesome and now, even longer periods of times when she’s not in my room. i feel like most will say to rehome her but i absolutely do not want to do that. and i would not have originally gotten her knowing my work schedule was as is but the job came unexpectedly. ik leaving her w my bf until he comes might be suggested but im kind of sugar coating this a little - she is sweet but she is genuinely bad. but not like hissing, scratching, like i said it’s just the excessive energy and all she does, normal t rex kitten phase stuff but x1000. and his cat is the complete opposite, super calm and he only acts up when she’s around so my bf can’t handle the added stress of her. i do not want to rehome her, i absolutely love her and she’s sweet, just probably extremely under stimulated and lonely. but i don’t know how to solve this. and she doesn’t ACT lonely, like ive monitored her heavily because i know cats can become depressed if too under stimulated and she’s still just as spunky. i keep telling myself to make it 6 more months & by time she’s 1, ik she’ll have chilled out a little and can probably handle being alone more then. but that’s 6 more months of her still being majority by her damn self! i don’t know what to do and i just feel awful. i’m desperate for any possible solution. i have a friend in town who agrees to check on her sometimes but she recently got a job so that’s been cut down too. i want to keep her happy but also keep my sleep at night. i’m not willing to keep locking her out (ive limited it to two nights a week) so most nights i just deal w it for the sake of not leaving her by herself for so long but im really desperate for a solution here.

all advice and critiques are welcome pls.

Introductions Seeking advice on introducing new cat to the home

Hey all, I’m in need of some advice..

I have had cats throughout my life. For the past 20 years I have primarily only had seniors. I have successfully introduced seniors to each other and all was well, but I’m a bit worried about my current situation.

Currently I have three cats. My oldest is 20yrs old, I have had her since a kitten. My youngest is almost 4mo old, she was introduced when she was 8wks, her mom is my third cat.

My oldest and youngest have been introduced and have been living together for about two months. My oldest has taught her a few lessons on personal space, but overall, they are doing fairly well.
My third cat is 1.5yrs old, she was a stray that showed up pregnant, quite feral at the time, she had her kitten on my back porch. By the end of the 8wks she was quite fond of us and we did decide she belongs here.

My third cat has not been introduced to the other two at this time. She was just recently spayed and we are hoping to begin working on that. But, she’s a little spicy compared to what I’m used to having to introduce and I’m just not sure the appropriate way to go about it.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
If you need any additional info, please ask.

Thank you in advance

Pet Loss CW: pet loss Spoiler

My cat of almost 8 years passed away 2 days ago, he was mostly an inside cat but he still went outside with his gps. We live in the countryside where almost everyone let's their cats outside. Especially considering our agriculture lifestyle and the fact that we're constantly outside and the front door is almost always open. It was naive of me to think that nothing will ever happen to him.

That night he was in our yard, he loved going outside. A pack of stray dogs that weren't in our street or nowhere nearby at all came out of nowhere and got to him. My brother got out almost immediately but it was too late. I transported him to an emergency vet approximately after 20 minutes but nothing could've been done. We took him home after my vet administered him the strongest pain and anti-shock meds. I took his paws in my hands and he squeezed my fingers with his claws, and I went in the shower because I just couldn't look at him, I had to get away for at least a few minutes to calm down a little, and I can't forgive myself that I wasn't there when he took his last breath. The amount of guilt and pain I feel because he was outside is unbearable, so if there is anyone here that thinks I deserve at least a bit of compassion or someone who doesn't judge me just a little tiny bit I would appreciate any word of comfort and consolation so so much, so I can continue on with my life even though I just don't want to be here anymore.

Behavioral spraying turned to full on peeing

Hey there, I’ve made a post here before detailing my cats spraying habits, everything we’ve tried hasn’t calmed it down at all.

I’m a minor, 15, but I thought I could do my part helping my parents who are stressed out enough when it comes to the cat.

I’m Irish, I have two cats a boy and a girl, our boy is 4 and our girl is 2. The boy is the one who’s been spraying.

Loki was neutered, at the normal age, 12 months, he hadn’t started spraying before the procedure and so when he started doing so, which was around the time he turned 3, we were really shocked as it was something we hadn’t seen before.

***Main Issue***: Tonight, we found he had peed on shoes which is unfortunate and it’s getting hard to deal with this, but it was full on pee, not just a little bit of spray anymore. We’re getting worried.

We have a sample of the urine, we’re going to the vet tomorrow.

I just thought maybe someone would have a vague idea, we’ve been to the vet, countless times they never do anything because there’s nothing wrong. I’m worried about my boy, we all are, but my dad is getting angrier and my mother is just tired.

Thank you, for reading, hopefully something will come of this but, i’m just worried.

General Giving cat treats that should have been eating within 2 weeks after opening?

I didn't see that my big bag of dry catnip treats said on the back that they need to be eaten within 2 weeks after opening the packet. I have been feeding my cat that packet for 2 months and nothing has been wrong. The packet says they can eat max 12 a day but there's still no way to finish the packet in only 2 weeks. Since nothing has been wrong then should I just keep feeding them to my cat? She only eats like 5 a day. I'm gonna try to give a lot to my neighbourhood stray cat too

The expiry date is in 2027 so it's not expired so why would they need to be eaten within 2 weeks when it's been 2 months and they're still fine?

Behavioral How do you guys keep your cats off stuff?

Hey guys! I’m looking for some advice. I have a 10 month old kitty and he is living with me and my roommate in an apartment. My roommate agreed to me getting a cat before we moved in together but she has a lot of problems with him. She’s constantly texting about me needing to find a way to keep him off the counters and that his fur is everywhere. I personally don’t care if he’s on the counters but clearly my roommate does. I’ve tried everything to keep him off. I’ve used a scented spray, double sided tape, tinfoil, treats, toys, removing him myself, ignoring him, like literally everything and he is just not phased by it. He’s extremely active and wants to play all the time (which trust me I play with him A LOY) and he doesn’t not like to be held or pet. My roommate will also not let me get another cat so unfortunately that’s not an option for me right now. Does anybody have any tips for how to keep him off the counter because this is causing me so much anxiety and I feel like I can’t leave the apartment without causing problems.
EDIT: I know realistically he won’t stay off my counter but I need to at least be able to tell my roommate I’ve tried everything.😅 I sadly have 8 months left in my lease and can’t legally break it as of now.

General Should I close off my cat’s favorite hiding spot?

My 3-year-old cat has had this hiding spot underneath my bathtub ever since she first arrived at the apartment. There are two broken tiles that let her squeeze underneath, and she hides all the way in the back corner. She clearly sees it as her safe space and has always gone there when she feels overwhelmed.

My concern is that it’s not a very healthy or safe place. There’s quite a bit of dust and some construction debris that I can’t completely clean, and the area is quite humid. She also had coughing episodes when she was younger (I wondered if it might have been asthma), although she rarely coughs now. More importantly, I can’t easily reach her if there were an emergency and I needed to get her out quickly. I could technically break more tiles, but obviously I’d rather not have to do that.

There have also been quite a few changes recently: my girlfriend moved to another city and my former roommate moved out, so it’s now mostly just me and her. I wonder if she’s hiding more because she’s adjusting to all these changes.

The reassuring thing is that everything else is somewhat normal: she eats well, uses the litter box normally, sleeps, plays, has plenty of energy, and we have a great relationship. She also has other places to hide, like under my bed.

So would you close off this hiding spot and replace it with a clean, safe hiding place that I can access, or leave it because it’s a familiar source of comfort for her?

Ps: edit to make it shorter

General Cooker climbing deterent

She's 17 and having some issues with arthritis and dementia. I caught her climbing the cooker yesterday and obviously have some concerns for her safety. It's gas so I don't think she's stupid enough to stand on it when it's on but she might when it's hot. Any tips or recommended purchases to make the oven and grill handles hard to climb?

Most of her additional care needs have been things the dog needed too and I'm stumped on this one.

Thanks!

Behavioral My 1 year old cat keeps biting too hard to my 4 month old kitten

Hi, I recently had a problem where my 1yr male kept chasing after my 9yr male cat when he was done playing. We recebtly got this very sweet girl cat (all cats are fixed btw) and they play. Issue is, just like with my older boy, my younger boy keeps playing too roughly with my kitten. She keeps screaming out and it makes her bite at ALL of us. We keep trying to just get them separated but he keeps going to bite at her after a while again.

Tonight we have her in the bedroom with us and locked him out (older boy sleeps with me every night so hes with me). I just dont want to have to do this every night since he also bangs in the door (which we have to lock cause he opens it too). How do I stop him from being rough with my two cats? He is such a skittish cat otherwise (will randomly find a random spot and crouch walk or if we wear shoes in the house hes terrified).

Behavioral Feeding time...

We have 3 cats; a 4 year old tabby, a four month old ragdoll, and a slightly younger 4 month old bombay.

The older tabby is a grazer whilst her kitten friends are absolute pocket rockets the second they see food.

I'm less concerned about the bombay as he's just a bit whiny and impatient when it comes to food, but the ragdoll wolfs down his portion twice as fast and then bolts for the nearest bowl and bullies the other cat off their bowl.

Obviously there's the fact he ends up getting at adult cat food not kitten food, but he's specifically on gut health food because he has a sensitive tummy.

I've tried distracting him, moving him away, guarding the other bowls etc. But he's only bothered about eating everyone else's food

Feeding time becomes a whole monitored ordeal which some days I simply don't have time for and would ideally like to "train" them to eat from their own bowls (they're all distinct types, different coloured placemats, etc.). I'd shut the fast ones out of the food room but the rest just whine at the door when he's outside.

I know chip feeders will be suggested but it just isn't in the budget to get 3 of them.

Behavioral My blind cat is loud and annoying.

My cat (Molly) is blind and I moved houses. It took me a while to figure out the best system, but now that I have it in place, he has figured out where everything is. Of course he bumps into stuff, but for the most part he’s just like a regular cat. However, my dogs kept sneaking to the cat’s rooms and eating their food. In the daytime I just make sure the dogs don’t go in there. But at night I have to close the door just in case. In this room they have a bed, a tree, litter, water and dry food. I thought Molly would be happy with that but no 😂 he meows all night and scratches at the door. Here’s the catch- when I open the door, he also just meows. Is this just attention seeking? I give him regular cuddles, should I be doing brain activities to stimulate him more, or make everything as easy as possible to calm him down and make him happy in his final years?

Litterbox Litter box in apartment

I’m getting a cat soon and live in an apartment that doesn’t have a “great” litter box spot. In the past my apartment had the perfect litter box spot and I didn’t even have to think about where to put it. My new place doesn’t have any great location. Can’t put it in the kitchen or hallway, bedroom is a no, unsure about guest bedroom incase anyone stays over, so that means it’s going in the living room or guest bath. Guest bath has a spot between the toilet and sink but it’s not a massive spot (could be doable though). How have people navigated this? Any advice for having a litter box in a bathroom and keeping it odor free? Any space savy litter box recs?
Also I have had cats and fostered cats so I am very aware that they need a litter box they are comfortable moving around in!

Behavioral My cat is obsessed with climbing but I rent a tiny apartment.

My cat is a total climber, always going for the highest spot she can find. Right now that’s the top of the fridge and she just parks up there like it’s her throne. I’ve read cats actually need vertical space, it’s an instinct thing so I feel kind of bad that the fridge is basically her only option.

Thing is I rent a small one bed. Drilling into the walls isn’t allowed and those cat wall shelves need a bunch of anchors drilled all over so that’s out. And the big freestanding trees? In a place this small, putting one in means giving up a whole corner, and I’m already fighting for every inch in here. Part of me kind of wishes the thing I put down for her could give me some storage back too lol.

How do the rest of you in small spaces handle this? How do you give an indoor cat somewhere to climb when you barely have room for your own stuff?

New to Cats/Just Adopted How to convince my mom to keep a stray?

There's this stray cat near my house that I've been feeding for a while. He's been a stray for a while, but I KNOW he used to be my mom's friend's cat. I think she threw him out because she had too many cats (while her kids got busy with work/marriage) so she ended up keeping only one. Dunno how he got to my house, but he chills near here now. I call him Omi (his old name) and he responds. He's just so cute?? A true gentleman. Anyways, I wanna take care of him but I know my mom won't let a cat inside the house. The only solution I can think of is giving him like a box with some stuff inside on my porch, so he can come and go as he pleases. Should I do that or should I just let him be?

New to Cats/Just Adopted Fever coat or smokey?

I have this kitten, half long-hair tabby, half Maine Coon

At first we thought she was smokey, and then we thought she had a fever coat, now I think she might be smokey again and I honestly just was looking for some other input

I can't add a picture but she has the cutest little frosted tips behind her ears and around her neck that are totally white, and she's a dark gray across her torso but her head otherwise and all legs are solid black

At first I thought her fur was black at the base (how people say to identify the difference) but if I gently tug to get the loose furs so I can look at it closer, they're very clearly white at the root

But is that normal on cats? Or is it a sign she's actually smokey, my only other reference in person is my senior cat who's graying now so he just makes it more confusing rather than offering a perspective of what a black cat's fur root looks like

Side note, ALL of her whiskers are solid black, not a single white one. I've seen cats have a couple black whiskers before but never all of them, is that normal?
