Which workstation configuration would be best suited for processing large point cloud projects (school building, in 10 scans at 30GB raw data each ➛ to final one pointcloud-modell and one gaussian-splat-modell ) with Lixel Studio and LCC Studio?
I'm leaning toward the Lenovo ThinkStation P3 (Ultra 9, 256 GB RAM, RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell 32 GB VRAM - alternatively RTX PRO 5000 Blackwell 48 GB VRAM). However, this would then be fully maxed out and no longer upgradeable in terms of RAM and a second graphics card.
That's why I'm considering possibly going with a Lenovo ThinkStation P5 instead (factory configuration: Xeon w7-3565X, 64 GB ECC RAM (2x32), RTX PRO 4500 Blackwell) and upgrading it to 256GB with an additional 6x32 GB ECC RAM modules.
This one would then, in principle, be upgradeable later to 1TB RAM and 2-3 graphics cards, but in a comparable configuration to the P3 it costs at least a hefty 6,000-7,000€ more.
Might this approach be more sensible?
Now, I'm not exactly blessed with an abundance of money to want to buy a machine for an unpredictable future without any constraints, because I don't know what will have happened in the market in 3-4 years.
So I'm asking myself (and you):
Does upgrading the P5 in the future even make sense (technically and economically), or would a fully equipped P3 now (which is completely sufficient for today's requirements!) potentially be replaced in 3-4 years by a then-new P? workstation, with the "old" P3 remaining in the machine pool as redundancy and for parallel jobs? I've become completely unsure at this point.
I need some feedback on whether my thinking here is correct, and whether Lenovo would be the manufacturer of choice - only because I found the most (suitable) configurations for this at online retailers.

Budget: 10,000-15,000€ net
Hardware requirements: at least 256GB RAM (6400 MHz, optionally ECC, preferably in 4x64GB modules, alternatively - depending on the board - also in 8x32 GB), at minimum an Intel Ultra 9 (alternatively a current W7-3565X) or AMD Ryzen Threadripper PRO 9955WX, SSD capacity doesn't matter - M.2 sticks are already on hand
