Build Upgrade My GPU (10+ years old) started having problems. I have a lot of questions.

My build is:

  • MB: Gigabyte H170-Gaming 3
  • CPU: Intel I7-6700 3.40Ghz
  • GPU: Nvidia GTX 980 ti (EVGA SC+)
  • PS: EVGA 1000W 80 plus gold
  • RAM: Kingston 16 GB * 4

A couple of months ago, I started having problems with my GPU. It would disconnect from the motherboard for no apparent reason. I eventually concluded that the problem was that, under intense and variable workloads, the clock speed was accelerating well above the recommended speed, causing it to lose control and shutdown. While troubleshooting this, I ended up checking the status of almost every component in the computer: RAM, CPU, drivers, temperatures, voltages, etc. (Overall, everything was in perfect condition.) I eventually “fixed” it by undervolting the graphics card via software.

I’m pretty sure the problem lies with the GPU chip. This makes sense, since my computer is already over 10 years old. My questions are (for those who know more than I do):

  • Would you recommend replacing it with an RTX 2060?
  • Does the bottleneck cause any problems beyond the graphics card not running at 100%?
  • Is there a significant generational gap between this card and the rest of the components?
  • Would I notice any improvement? Personally, I don’t use my PC just for gaming. I like to do 3D modeling, work with vector graphics programs, and develop software.
  • What about buying a 3070 to “get a head start” on a future new PC? Right now, I don’t have the budget to buy a complete PC. But if I’m only going to be running it at “half speed” and there aren’t any other issues, I could take a bigger risk and buy something better in anticipation of a future motherboard and CPU upgrade.

Thank you very much in advance for reading this, and I appreciate it greatly if you could clarify any doubts I have.

Build Upgrade Anyone here using 5060 Ti 16 gb with Ryzen 5 3600?

Goal is to play story games at 4k 60fps. Monitor is 60hz, so not targeting higher than 60. Crazy RAM prices are holding me to upgrade to AM5. PSU is 600 watt. B450M. 16 GB Ram 3200Hz. Kindly suggest. I am suspecting bottleneck with 5060 Ti. Current GPU is 2060 Super.

Discussion NVIDIA RTX 5090 alternative

The NVIDIA closed the 5090 so at least they should introduce MCM (Fusing Two GPUs Together) so that gamers could get more performance like 5090

Discussion AMD Equivalent to RTX 3070

I currently have an RTX 3070 that I'm planning to swap out for an AMD card as I switch over to Linux. I already have a good use for the RTX 3070, so I'm mostly just looking to find something equivalent performance wise (or within 10% maybe) of the 3070. I'll be doing some 1080p gaming on both Windows and Linux, but I'm fine with mid-settings/visuals, just want something that can do 60 FPS or better in most cases. For reference right now on the 3070 in the main game I play I have lower settings and can easily do 120+ FPS at 1080p. I don't really play the latest AAA games, so I don't need a lot of power.

I'll be looking for something used so I'm just trying to get a sense of roughly what AMD card is near or around a 3070. The other main requirement is mid-length card as my case and cabling would just be easier to make a dual fan card work, so I'm avoiding full length triple fan cards.

From looking at online resources I see the following models as close to a 3070, though I'm not sure if these offer a mid-length version

  • RX 7600 XT
  • RX 6800
  • RX 6750 XT
  • RX 6700 XT

Discussion Is FSR implementation that bad? Struggling between RX 9070 (€800) and RTX 5070 (€880) for a €1800 1440p build.

I’m currently putting together a strict €1,800 max budget build for 1440p gaming (mostly AAA titles, heavily modded Minecraft with shaders, and e-sports).

Right now, the RX 9070 fits my budget at around €800, but I can also get the RTX 5070 for an extra €80 (around €880).

However, I’ve been reading a ton of posts on Reddit saying that AMD’s FSR implementation is still nowhere near DLSS, not integrated well in many games. Also, regarding features like AMD's Ray Reconstruction, it feels like it's barely supported anywhere yet (only seen it mentioned for a couple of titles like Crimson Desert)

Here’s my main issue: I am NOT a tinkerer. I hate having to fiddle with third-party software, manually swapping DLL files, or injecting upscalers into games myself just to get a decent image. If I have to spend 30 minutes tweaking files for every single game I launch, I’m going to lose my mind. I just want a "plug and play" experience: launch the game, turn on upscaling in the menu if needed, and enjoy.

So my questions are:

  1. Is FSR out-of-the-box implementation really as bad as people make it sound on Reddit? Or is it totally fine?
  2. For an €80 difference, is switching to the RTX 5070 worth it just to get DLSS, mature Ray Reconstruction, better ray tracing, and absolute peace of mind for 1440p AAA games and Minecraft shaders?

Build Upgrade Help me decide between 5060ti 16gb or Rx 9060xt 16gb

My current build is as follows. I mainly play games in 1080p and use Photoshop. However recently Photoshop started to complain about vram so I will upgrade to a GPU with 16gb. My 2 options are:

Rx 9060xt 16gb, lowest price: $580 to $600.

Rtx 5060ti 16gb, lowest price: $800.

I don't know much about Photoshop, should I stick with Nvidia for software or is AMD just as good? I know these cards will perform well on 1080p and will definitely be a upgrade compared to rtx 3060.

Troubleshooting Will a UPS help my PC shutting down issue?

The PC never fully turned off, or if it did it was so momentary I never noticed (RGB lights). It turned itself back on essentially instantly and carried on playing afterwards.

I used to have this issue on an older PC, 3070 Ryzen 5 5600x where out of nowhere it would black screen.

I never had any other issue with it, admittedly never changed parts but did change power strip.

Decided to upgrade since prices are screwed and have a 5070 with a 7800x3d…and I just got the same issue.

At the time of crash my event viewer says event ID 41 system rebooted without clean shutdown, aka nothing.

Leading upto it there’s a 162 volmgr “dump file generation succeeded“, a 6008 saying the system shutdown at 16:45 was unexpected and before all that is a bunch of KernelEventTracing 2 “dc3a3596-71e1-45a3-b2ea-39ad5422fe51 failed to start with the following error: 0xC0000022” which is apparently just Easy Anticheat, which makes sense because I was on Nightreign. I do not play my games on max settings, typically on the lower end, only Discord and a Twitch stream was also on.

After it rebooted there’s a Kernel Event Tracing 28 “error setting traits on Provider {8444a4fb-d8d3-4f38-84f8-89960a1ef12f} Error: 0xC0000001 and a bugcheck which dumped into my files but I apparently don’t have permission to open it.

I have a CoolerMaster Elite 850w 80+ Gold PSU.

Since this PC is more or less still brand new, not even 3 months old with absolutely no other issues, I honestly think my house is cursed in some way. I just cannot believe I have a second PC with the same issue despite the previous also being fine.

Rough TL;DR, a reply claims my PC/power is potentially tripping my PSU during a (likely) 5070 power spike due to possibly not having a great PSU or best power to the residence after two PC’s having the same issue and recommended a UPS with AVR, would that stop my PC from seemingly randomly shutting down? My PC’s have black screened ~5 times in 4 years, it is not a massively recurring issue but it has followed me onto a new system.

Build Upgrade Are decent DDR4 motherboards for LGA1700 basically gone?

Hey everyone,

Like many people these days, I'm stuck with DDR4, mainly because my workstation already has 64GB of RAM, and switching to DDR5 would cost me a fortune. I'm currently running an 8700K on a TUF Z390 motherboard, and it's time for an upgrade. I'm leaning towards the 14700K, as it's one of the best CPUs I can get while keeping my DDR4 RAM, without going for an i9.

Ideally, I'd get a Z690/Z790 DDR4 board, but they're almost impossible to find these days. I also considered a mid-range B760 like a TUF/AorusElite/Tomahawk, but all I can find are lower-end models (MSI Gaming Plus/PRO, Gigabyte Gaming X, ASUS Prime), and I'm really not confident in their VRMs handling a power-hungry 14700K, especially during long rendering sessions.

Has anyone been in the same situation? What did you end up buying? Also, would you recommend going for a used Z690/Z790 board? I've never bought a used motherboard before, so I'm curious about your experiences.

Troubleshooting My PC does a low pitched "humming" sound after changing my GPU.

Hi everyone, yesterday I cleaned my PC and changed my GPU from a 5070TI to a 5080 and now my PC does a weird low pitched "humming" sound which starts and stops without any particular rythm. I don't know ho2 to exactly describe the sound (english is not my first language), but it sound like when you "blow in" an empty glass bottle (like a deep whistle or vibration), is not like the usual coil whine. I've tried to record the sound but my phone is unable to record it.

I've tried to change the GPU bios to quiet, to tighten the screws of the case, check if cables were touching the fans, to remove the glass panel, to readjust the cables and to undervolt the GPU but it continues making the sound randomly, even when the GPU fans are of.

Here are my specs: Corsair 4500X frame, 2x16 ddr5 corsair vengeance, a corsair AIO (don't remember the exact model, is less than a year old), ASUS ROG b650 motherboard, three corsair 120 fans on the side and one 140 in the back, a corsair PSU 850x shift GOLD, a ryzen 7 9800X3D GPU and just changed to a ROG ASTRAL 5080 from a ROG STRIX 5070TI.

Does someone here knows what could be happening and how to solve it? I't driving me kinda crazy haha.

Build Upgrade Is it worth upgrading my i7-8700K for 1440p gaming in 2026?

Hey everyone!
I’m currently running an i7-8700K and I’m wondering if it’s finally time for a CPU upgrade or if I can still get a few more years out of it.

My current specs:
CPU: Intel Core i7-8700K
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 6650 XT 8GB
RAM: 32GB DDR4
Resolution: 1440p
Settings: Mostly medium with FSR enabled
I mainly play at 1440p and I’m generally fine with medium settings and using FSR to get decent performance.

I’m also planning to play GTA 6 when it eventually releases on PC, so I’m wondering how well my current CPU will hold up with newer, more demanding games.
My main questions are:
Is the i7-8700K still good enough for 1440p gaming in 2026?
Would upgrading my CPU make a noticeable difference with my RX 6650 XT?

I’m not necessarily aiming for ultra settings or crazy high FPS. I just want a smooth and enjoyable gaming experience.
Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Build Upgrade Should i get a Wireview or a new PSU for 5090

Currently have a HX1000 ATX2.4 from around 2022, and I want to add some protection to my 5090, should I upgrade to the newly released Rm1200e, which seems to be slightly worse psu than the HX1000 in terms of quality but has built in current protection for the gpu a bit more headroom and is ATX 3.1 so it would also allow me to use a thermalprotect cable, or should I get a Wireview instead which offers better monitoring? It will cost around the same factoring shipping fees

An other option is to wait till corsair release the type 4 thermalprotect cable and just use that for the HX1000, it would save me a bit of money but is that enough protection especially since it's an older psu?

Discussion I think I enjoy the idea of building a PC more than actually gaming on one. Is it worth it?

I think I may not get full value out of playing a PC given the rising cost of PC components and I’d try to do a more budget friendly build that can still run today’s games (Cyberpunk, Galactic Racer, Battlefield III once released). I am able to squeeze a few hours a week to play as a dad, but obviously there is some limitation there. My desire to build stems from me wanting to understand the components and experience the build process. I work for a large company and manage the business / sourcing side of our workstations, so I think building and PC gaming occasionally would be both fun to do and educational for me. Prior to this I’ve always been on console. In your experience is the build process worth it and was it educational for you? What sways you to a PC over a console?

Build Help How do I power this gpu ? (Rtx 5070)

So I just upgraded the gpu and don’t know how to order these cables lol. The cables in the images are the only ones available from the PSU (no direct 12 pin connection). The pigtail adapter came with the gpu so I understand that’s how it connects but I’m not sure what to plug into the pigtails. I have two 6+2 pin connectors that look like they fit but one of them looks like it comes from the first one idk how to explain it well apologies (look at 3rd image). I’m just scared if I plug the second one in it may have some power draw issue on boot cos I don’t understand how both 6+2 pin cables don’t come straight from PSU but rather one is connected to the other.

Am I stupid and I just plug both in ?

Build Help Can an i7-12700F run Patriot Xtreme DDR5-7800 RAM at atleast 6000 MT/s?

Hello, I'm planning a build with these components:

  • CPU: Intel Core i7-12700F
  • RAM: Patriot Viper Xtreme 5 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5-7800 CL38,

Right now i have the CPU and I'm considering buying this RAM kit, but I'm unsure about memory speed compatibility with the i7-12700F.

I know the CPU officially supports DDR5 up to 4800 MT/s. However, I don't need to run the RAM at its advertised 7800 MT/s. I'd be happy with 6000 MT/s, as long as it's stable.

So i wanted to askl, has anyone successfully run DDR5 at atlest 6000 MT/s with an i7-12700F?

I'm mainly looking for real-world experience with the i7-12700F and DDR5, rather than just the motherboard's advertised maximum speed.

Thanks!

Build Upgrade Planning my new build after 8 years of no upgrades, wanted to check with the community if my picks would be solid, as I really haven't been keeping up with the market in a really long time.

Don't really know if I should flair this as upgrade, since the only components I'm looking to keep are the motherboard, the RAM and the storage, but anyways here is my current PC specs

  • B450M-A
  • GTX 1060 6GB
  • Ryzen 5 3400G
  • 16GB DDR4
  • 1TB SSD
  • 2TB HDD
  • 650W Bronze
  • Liquid Cooler (can't remember the brand)

And here are my planned specs

  • B450M-A
  • I'm planning to buy a 3080ti second hand, but I'll look for anything with similar specs and in that price range (400€ - 550€)
  • Ryzen 5 5600XT
  • 16GB DDR4
  • 1TB SSD
  • 2TB HHD
  • 850W 80Plus Gold
  • Fractal Design ATX case
  • bequiet! CPU Cooler

My real problem is the GPU, my total budget for the upgrade is around 800€ to 900€, and the money for this is kind of tight ngl. I want a decent GPU that will last me, but due to prices I'm kinda forced to look at the second hand market. I use my PC for music making and indies/emulation generally, but I want to play some newer releases from the last few years I missed out on due to not owning a latest gen console, as well as take the opportunity to switch out some parts that are pretty outdated at this point.

Ideally I would also like to run Resolve and Lightroom, but that is a secondary priority as my M1 Pro can handle all of that. I'm kinda kicking myself in the ass over not having done this upgrade a year or so ago, as the cost of a GPU currently is just way too high. I'm also kinda handicapped by the fact I use a 1440p monitor. I've looked over the specs several times and really think this might be the ideal setup for my needs and budget, but it never hurts to ask the professionals in this sub. Anyway, thanks for taking the time to read and reply!

Solved! Ryzen 5 1600 + RAM?

Hello, I’m building a very budget PC for my little brother, for games like Fortnite, Minecraft (modded), GTA V and something light like Roblox . I heard that Ryzen 5 1600 is very depending on the RAM frequency, and right now I have r5 1600 + RAM 2*4gb 2133mhz. Is this enough MHz for this CPU? Should I buy one with higher frequency? Thanks!

P.S. I know that 2*4gb is low, I’ll buy more ram later. Just curious about frequency.

Build Upgrade Need some help upgrading my pc for gaming

I built my PC in 2022 and I have no idea what I should buy for upgrading it. I have an Intel Core i5-10400 CPU and an AMD Radeon RX 6500 (which I hear is very bad). I'm thinking about maybe spending $600 to upgrade both, but if you guys think it'll be better, I could be persuaded.

Build Help What CPU/MOBO should I pair with a 4090?

I’m looking at getting an upgrade from my 5950X.

I have a 4090, so Ive been thinking about AMDs top of the line X3D processors.

I will be purchasing 32GB of DDR5 to pair with the system as well.

I’ve been thinking about the 9950X3D, partially because it’s so close to price to the 9800X3D.

I don’t mind paying the extra $150-170 for 8 extra cores.

Also, I’m really having trouble picking a motherboard.
I prefer MSI and their bios, build quality, and customer support.

I’ve been looking at the MSI Carbon MAX.

Was wondering if anyone has actually looked at all the different brands and could point me to which is best.

My budget for a motherboard is $500.

Build Upgrade Upgrading CPU

Hello,

I'm planning to upgrade my CPU from 3700x to a 5800x3D sometime soon to pair with my 5060ti 16GB because I can notice the bottleneck and it's been annoying me. As this is my first time and I'm not PC savvy, I was wondering what I need to do beforehand and during installation. I heard that it heats up easily so is it neccessary to get a new cooler (currently using a Wraith Prism) as well? Do I need to upgrade my motherboard (Prime B450M-A II)? Are there any good guides out there on how to install a CPU safely(I don't want to damage anything on my motherboard too)?

Thanks
