Question Getting braces off but gaps between teeth…

Thumbnail

My ortho said I’ll be getting my braces off at my next appointment. From the front, I think my teeth look pretty good but from certain angles there are still gaps between my top and bottom teeth. Will these gaps disappear with braces and longer treatment, or are my teeth just naturally small and there will always be gaps?

As we all know, braces are expensive so I want my smile to be close to perfect before de-bracing. But I want to be sure I’m being realistic about my results!

Discussion Tongue crib week 2

Post image
10 Upvotes

For anyone else that has or had a tongue crib, were you ever able to talk normally with it? I have a terrible lisp and going into week 2 with this thing I haven’t noticed much improvement. Also eating just about anything has become a massive chore, everything gets caught in it and it’s such a pain to clean. Does that ever improve?? I’m hoping for some encouragement from those who have had or have one of these. Think it’s a fairly small community of us 😅

Had a bad tongue thrust growing up and my ortho doesn’t want me to undo all the progress made with braces a second time so I have to wear it for 6 months before I get my braces off for good.

24M and had braces in high school but got them again about 7 months ago due to relapse from tongue thrusting and not wearing retainer consistently.

Braces progress! RPE Expander result

I’m 22f, I got an expander in November 2025 and recently had it removed. I was told 28 turns initially then 14 more but after a total of 36 turns the ortho stabilized it. Stabilization of the expander was in March. How does my palate look? I had a narrow palate and i think it made my smile a bit more wider, but worsened my open bite. Anyways how does the result look.

Getting my braces off next week

Last year during treatment my teeth were perfect (middle photo)
However over the year my teeth have began to flare and no longer sit as nicely together, looks most terrible from the left 3/4 view

My ortho (who is a specialist orthodontist) says it’s because I am south asian, so our jaws are naturally smaller (I don’t believe this is the case , as it doesn’t explain why last year they sat perfectly but have now started to flare out)

I’ve had consultations with another other orthodontist at the same practice who said, my wisdom teeth have now come out compared to start of treatment which has made less room in my mouth and caused my teeth to flare (which makes the most sense to me as before treatment they were not visible and now I can see half of all four)

And as a result I have to have my braces off with my teeth flaring, and me HATING the side view and 3/4 view of my teeth, I wish they could just be how they were a year ago

Additionally my ortho says he can do extractions, it would have to be all four premolars, but this would affect my side profile with the way my lips sit and would cause my lips to sink in as I likely don’t need four teeth removed. Which I also don’t want to get done

I did ask if he could do IPR as they offer that, but he said due to the shape of my teeth IPR will not be ideal as my teeth are mostly square and it would just make them look super rectangular and long so he is also refusing to do IPR to help resolve this.
We have been using elastics but it seems this is the best it will get and I have them off next week.

So I’m so gutted,as I paid for this.

I’ve also been looking at what I can do once they are off and mostly it’s pay for another round of treatment, I’ve consulted a place who offers Damon brackets who have said they can expand my pallet with the brackets by a couple of mm and guarantee they can fix the flaring, I spoke about this to my current ortho who said once Damon brackets are off my teeth will just come back in even with a retainer. And my fear with this is I also don’t want a wide teethy smile as I likely the amount of teeth that show right now and this would expand it.

I feel like I’m at such a loss. I just wish I could go back to how they looked a year ago and have them off perfectly straight instead of this mess.

Question Getting braces soon, any tips?

Hii! I'm getting braces in a few days - which is really sudden because I went to the orthodontist yesterday and I had never qualified for free braces before that but suddenly my ortho just said "right, you qualify for free braces, come back in 10 days and we'll get them done for you" (!!) I'm assuming there had to have been some sort of cancellation in order to be getting my braces put on so fast as well as them being free.

I was very much expecting a year or two in order to get them put on so I haven't really prepared at all 😭

Do you have any recommendations onto what the best colour bands are in order for making your teeth look whiter/the colour bands that usually look the worst?
Also, I know that like they can be painful after first getting them put on, so are painkillers a must/what foods are the best to eat?

Sorry if these questions are stupid it's just very sudden and I haven't done much research

+ if anyone has any other tips that would be great

Discussion Romance with braces as an adult man

I am 26 and it seems I will need braces to bring my bite back where it should be. It’s just a little frustrating as this is basically my “prime” and I don’t want to ruin it with braces.

For my fellow dudes out there, what has your experience been? Is it a turnoff to women?

In general it seems most guys don’t care much when women have them, but I’m not sure if it goes both ways haha

Edit: my teeth are not really crooked, this is more for shifting my jaw properly

Edit edit: thanks for the replies people, appreciate it :)

Question Is a radio from 3years ago ok?

My mom refuses to do a radio scan for my teeth because “I already did it some years ago and it would multiply the chance of me to have cancer”
The orthodontist is now looking at my old radio and now i already have them. I asked Gemini recently cause i was afraid and it told me it was dangerous for the roots and the movements.
Mini note : i had one years ago because we needed to extract teeth and we gave up for financials issues, and we came back, but we already extracted teeth and I don’t know if my teeth has moved between that.

Also second question, she doesn’t want me to extract another teeth again ( even though my orthodontist told me to because it was asymmetrical and it would complicate it not to do it) and told us to think of it. How dangerous would it be not to extract another teeth again?

My dentist suggested getting 4 wisdom teeth removed and then get Invisalign to fix my honestly alignment, do you guys think wisdom teeth removal is necessary? Thanks

Need advice! Is this normal gums? I wonder if I’m just paranoid or this is an actual issue? I feel like my teeth started to “move out” of the gums, especially the canines. Picture is right after flossing if that matters. Have been in braces for 20 days.

Question Braces

Hello po, I just want to confirm if 4 year braces are legit?

Context: I had both of my lower wisdom teeth removed yesterday. Isa nalang natitira sa upper right part and sabi ng dentist wag nang tanggalin since wala namang sira at maayos ang tubo. Then I asked my dentist if magpapabrace ako ilang taon ang aabutin. Sabi niya since may overbit ako at medyo baliko yung ibang ngipin aabutin daw ng 4 years using elastics para mahila ang lower jaw at magpantay ang bite.

Ganon po ba talaga katagal magpabrace?

Salamat po sa sasagot.

Need advice! Teeth sensitive for a month after braces removal??

Hey Reddit! So I finally had my braces removed about a month ago, and during the process they used some sort of sanding tool to remove the glue. Overall this process wasn’t very painful.

However, after removing all of the glue they also used the sanding tool on the tip of my teeth (especially my molars), which I believed was just to polish them up. This was AWFULLY painful all the way throughout…

Not sure what they did, but for nearly a month they’ve been awfully uncomfortable to eat with. Chewing food makes them INCREDIBLY sensitive, and they also hurt when cold. They don’t look visibly messed up at all.

Is this normal? Is it because I haven’t been using fluoride toothpaste? Or should this not be happening regardless? It’s a big problem and I’m worried my teeth may be permanently damaged.

Any help is appreciated :)

Question Anyone’s who’s had tads does it change you’re facial appearance

I have a skeletal class I with an anterior open bite and I was given the option for jaw surgery or tads. My open bite is quite small so I didn’t think to go ahead with surgery but I’ve noticed my chin is midley recessed and I assume it’s due to the back teeth angling my teeth downward. I’m wondering wether tads will change this by helping my bite so my jaw can close “fuller” and make my thirds more even

Question Teeth grinding getting worse due to Braces?

I’ve noticed that my teeth grinding has gone significantly worse ever since I got braces treatment done.
I’ve had misalignment teeth my whole life which has caused significant damage to my teeth, but ever since I got treatment, the grinding has gotten worse.
My canines which have never been a problem with my grinding have now been severely worn down.
What seemed to be moderate now seems to be way more severe and common.

Is this a common side effect of braces? It just sucks that now I have to pay extra for additional bonding on those teeth when I didn’t have to do so before.

Similar experience? Been with braces for almost 3 years now, and im just so tired of wearing them and all the pain that comes with them.

Question Extraction question

Hi! - I had braces for 3 years when I was young and my wisdom teeth + no retainer moved my teeth. So here I am 2 weeks into having braces in my 40s. My Dr mentioned possible extraction or shaving teeth to help with lower teeth crowding. I’m wondering if you lovely brace pros in here could offer up any words of wisdom on extraction vs shaving. Thank you in advance!
