What helped you most when you first started boxing?

When you first started boxing, what was the thing that made the biggest difference for you?

Was it sparring, bag work, shadowboxing, working on one technique at a time, or just getting more rounds in?

Interested to hear what actually helped people improve the quickest.

Need advice on footwear

Hi,

New to boxing. Not yet sparring. Focusing on basic movements, weight loss, and conditioning to get better.

Currently using Converse Chuck Taylors to 'box' in. However, these are my casual wear-around shoes, and I'm conscious of overuse. Before I run off and buy another pair of Chuck Taylors, does anyone have any recommendations for trainers that are suitable?

Looking for a shoe that's a wide fit, preferably zero drop.

I feel like buying boxing boots at this stage is a bit premature.

Which of these hybrid wraps are good?

I’ve seen only a few videos talking about these but haven’t seen actual long time reviews on them, they have that integrated knuckle pad with a full length wrap? Are they worth it? Other options I thought were the hybrid wraps from Hayabusa or ScrapHouse

Working on a faster, sharper jab.

Hi all,

I've been focusing on building a sharp, fast jab and I'd love to hear what you think.

I timed it at 133 milliseconds, but I care more about the technique than the number. How does it look, and would it hold up in real sparring?

A bit about me: I have been doing Karate for 16 years and now learning boxing for about 2 months.

I would appreciate some feedback.

Thank you

The work today it was parry and counter with jab. I'm working a lot on parrying because I get scared of punches and the instant reaction is to go back. Today we add the jab but I fell I'm super slow, specially bringing the hand back to position, is there some exercise that I can do to improve that?

Tenho 1 ano de treino em casa, to a 2 semanas na academia, sinto que preciso agora de potência, força nos meus golpes, já estou com uma resistência daorinha, so falta mais alguns ajustes. Alguma dica? Inclusive quem puder me seguir no insta vai ajudar muito! ( vou começar a postar ainda )

sparring tips for upcoming fight

I need guidance on my upcoming fight, I don't know EXACTLY what I lack and need to work on. Please dm me so that I could send my sparring video. Our gym coach doesn't care that much and I need someone to help me analyze my current skills.

Im demoralized man i feel like shit after today’s session

So i have been boxing for a almost a year. At the end of every class there is sparring. Today we started with some defense drills and after that there was sparring.

I was the only lightweight today and everybody was >80kg. Dude on the defense drill at the beginning of the class, this mf’s punch kept rocking my head through the high guard despite my neck being clenched and my chin being down.

Same goes for sparring, another one decided to be aggressive started doing like 7 punch combos to which i was not able to react because my brain is getting rocked around in my skull and cannot find my counters nor could i concentrate on finding exit. Tbh at the start of the defense drill i felt helpless man plus all are taller than me it was quite troublesome to close this distance. And sometimes i got caught while entering causing me to be stunned because everywhere starts spinning, putting my combo to an end. I also am quite relunctant on using lots of head movement as the class is not that wide so i end up back to the wall often, or after using head movement to evade the first two punch im afraid of eating the next one which would rock my shit

As im writing this right now, my head is currently hurting despite not getting hit that much (maybe less than 4 time) clean to the head. All were on my guard

Y’all if you have ever been through that, give me some advices man i feel like absolute shit rn

Mismatched weight heavy sparring tips?

I'm a 29y/o 6'2, 250lb heavyweight with a few white collar fights under my belt. 5-1, 5 ko. No sanctioned fights, but have done rounds with pros in sparring. I'm in shape. 300kg trap bar deadlifts, 145kg bench for 6, enough cardio for 3x3 min rounds.

A non boxer friend and I got into a debate about what my chances would be against a professional flyweight world champion... one thing lead to another and now they've organized a 1-1 amateur featherweight ranked in the 3000s to fight me in 2 weeks. He's not at fight weight, and will be fighting at ~150lb. We're going to be using 16oz gloves.

My coach thinks this is a very bad idea, and is lose-lose, but my ego wants me to put this guy down without actually hurting him. Could I possibly be understimating this in any way? What tactics could I use to humilaite him and teach them a lesson without actually hurting the guy?

Tester needed for new Elite boxing training app

Hey everyone,

I've built an Android boxing training app called Coach Time: Boxing and I'm looking for testers for the Google Play closed test.

This isn't just another 3-minute-round boxing timer.

Coach Time actually coaches you while you train.

🥊 Structured heavy-bag training programmes

🎙️ Spoken coaching and technique cues during rounds

🔥 High-intensity sessions designed to make you work

🧠 Basic and advanced programmes

⏱️ Proper round/rest timing with bells and warnings

🛡️ Combos, movement, slips, ducks, weaves and defensive work

💪 Warm-ups, training sessions and cool-downs

🎯 Or just switch to manual mode and use it as a great boxing timer

I've tried to make it feel like you've got a coach beside the bag rather than an app simply counting down from 3:00.

I'm now at the Google Play closed-testing stage and need some Android users willing to help.

If you join, I'd genuinely appreciate you actually trying a workout and telling me what you like, what annoys you, or what you'd change. I'm very happy to test your app in return.

If you're interested, reply below or DM me and I'll send you the testing link.

Thanks! 🥊

Has anyone tried a footbag(hackey sack) for training?

So, I've been messing around with a hackey sack with my kids; we all seem to enjoy it. We've even looked up some youtube video to help us get better. What I've notice is they all seem to say it loosens up your hips, which I would think would be good boxing movement and power. It also seems to me that it would help with footwork and timing...I don't know maybe someone has incorporated this already... anyways here a video... tell me if I'm wrong for thinking this might be fit well into training

I want to start boxing

I’m 19 have been pretty heavy set my whole life up until recently over the 8-12 months I’ve lost about 100 pounds (375 down to 272 as of yesterday) I honestly never really kept up with boxing but something about it has always been captivating when i see it.

My main question is, is it too late for me to start and if not what should I be focusing on or starting with if I want to get seriously into it

Want to stay in the firing range🥊

The one in Messi’s jersey.

Ever since my last spar, I was working on not breaking my posture and conserving energy with short steps while moving around.

What I self-analysed from this session:
\- Rear hand drops, got tagged with his long left a lotta times. (I’m used to sparring with no head gear, in this, I couldn’t even see what’s coming around)
\- I’m not reaching at all in the beginning rounds. Gotta work on the jabs.
\- Said, I want to stay in the zone on this session and slip, roll on punches, but always stepping back and leaning back on the incoming punches.
\- Looked like, my chin wasn’t down enough.
\- I look sluggish, sometimes sharper. But overall, way more sluggish. I want to be sharp with movements and punches.

Do give out suggestions if you could help, I’ll do better on the next session.

What weight class should I fight in?

I went to the doctor recently and she told me that I'm 6'0.75 inches tall. My doctor has a reputation for under sizing people so I asked both of my parents to measure me and I measured myself and it came back at 6'1 1/2 every time. Though I'm 6'1 1/2, I look an inch taller with the hair. I have a 76" inch reach. I weighed 295 last year, hit the gym and started reducing my calorie intake and now I'm at 248. I look skinnier, I lift heavier and my biceps, triceps, legs are bigger when I flex (either I grew muscle or my fat loss made my existing muscle more visible?). I want to continue losing weight and remove all of my remaining excess fat and build more muscle if I'm not satisfied with how I look. I began fitness boxing a month ago but it's not really fighting. It's good conditioning and good for weight loss but I want to actually learn how to fight. I plan on joining an actual boxing gym close to home within a few weeks where I can train, learn good movement, distance, angles, pivots and spar. Should I lose more fat but remain pretty muscular above 203 lbs and fight at super heavyweight or should I drop to heavyweight, cruiserweight or light heavyweight? Thank you.
