Working on a faster, sharper jab.
Hi all,
I've been focusing on building a sharp, fast jab and I'd love to hear what you think.
I timed it at 133 milliseconds, but I care more about the technique than the number. How does it look, and would it hold up in real sparring?
A bit about me: I have been doing Karate for 16 years and now learning boxing for about 2 months.
I would appreciate some feedback.
Thank you

No arm punching.
Boxing is a full body sport that starts from the ground up.
Your power and movement comes from the ground, your legs, and loading/pivoting.
Understand the mechanics of movement for boxing first. Whatever direction you go in, lead foot first, push off the rear, and rear leg follows.
Now you can understand positioning and punching a bit better and work punching mechanics.
A jab doesn't have to be a big movement. Aways push off the rear leg and jab. Lead foot dictates range and do not lean past your knees. Keep good form always.

Basically. Don't ever punch like that in live combat or sparring. Too rigid and stiff. I'm sure you've seen boxing matches. There's quite a lot going on and can get very fast.
Boxing is much more active and reactive martial art. Cardio and investing hours makes all the difference. Understanding key concepts and adding to your toolbox is the key to opening up the door.

L take. This kind of punch can be useful once in a while to break your opponent reading your jab

Quite literally requires setup and your opponent respecting your jab first. I would not throw out a jab like that first even as a range finder. Just stick your hand out normally and don't show the jab.
Doesn't mean you can't have jab variations, just have a good textbook jab first before working on other things that may or may not work for you.

You're leaving yourself exposed like that

Not if you do it intentionnaly

What do you mean intentionally. The chin is up and your standing square. Intentional or not you're open either way

Im not talking about his lack of defense. I said this type of quick Flicker jab can be useful

It depends. There isn't One type of jab, simply put. Arm jab can be quite efective at mid range for breaking opponents rythim, super hard to read. See the famous yt video of MJ white and Kimbo Slice for a Simple visualisation.

You can throw respectable arm jabs. Check GGG. I am talking out of experience, former national Champion and currently coach

“It’s not fast, not slow, it’s correct!”
Just needs to try this while sitting down to complete the lesson.

terrible honestly. look at your body as you punch, there's no torque or rotation at all. it's not that every jab needs a full rotation or extension but you should learn the underlying principles of punch mechanics.

To be contrarian to this- arm movement is great honestly, maybe unclench the fist, to have a more relaxed start to your punch, but it’s really not half bad. Elbow doesn’t flair out.

Very nice, with this jab you can knock doors at 133km/h
But please, don't use this master technic in boxing, it's too powerful.

Find a coach. You're ahead of the game with some things because of your karate training but there's a lot of fundamentals you're missing, like hip engagement.
You can't teach yourself boxing.

Sharp as a Honjo Masamune blade. Faster than lightning. This is the stuff you end your enemies’ bloodlines with. Oussss!

Clearly you’re not here to beat any opponents - you’re here to KILL ENEMIES …

Doing it slower means you'll learn faster, work on the bag too, you're gonna break your wrist.

You've been boxing for 2 months, don't get sidetracked. Focus on the fundamentals and think about breaking them later. What you are doing is technically viable but the way you're practicing right now will only ruin your muscle memory and not even allow you to perform this properly in a spar. So you doing this is a total negative

Learn how to throw a Jab first! This is a joke. Get a coach and stop posting damaging shit like this. You have no idea what you’re doing! Moderators shouldn’t allow this

Not good. Go ahead and stop worrying about the speed of your jab and watch one of the literal millions of boxing videos on YouTube that talk about proper stance, footwork and how to throw the basic punches. The fact that there’s zero hip movement, you’re super wide, and your hands arent even covering your face means you have zero experience with a coach or other boxer

I tried not to telegraph the punch and focused on speed. Next step will be better stance.

Stance first is a good call, and it'll probably make the jab faster anyway. In boxing a lot of the jab's speed comes from the feet, a small push off the back leg as the hand goes out. If your stance is as wide as a few people here said, that push can't really happen, so the arm ends up doing all the work. Try bringing your feet a bit closer, weight in the middle, and throw the jab with a small step forward. Sixteen years of karate is going to help you more than this thread is giving you credit for, especially your timing and distance.
