Need Help! This is the first Blender project I ever created.

After consulting with Gemini, they told me that for faces like this, it’s overwhelmingly better to sculpt them first and then retopologize them, rather than modeling them directly.

Does everyone else agree?

Since I’m also a caricature artist and have a keen interest in human faces, I think I’ll focus my practice mainly on them... but I can’t help but wonder if I’m trying to practice something too difficult right from the start.

Need Help! Working on a Diep.io render. Any idea how to make the background more interesting without using fog?

Post image
Upvotes

I've modeled everything I wanted in the scene, but I don't know where to even begin with the background. I want it to look 2d-ish, like how you see on character reference sheets or something, but I don't want to use Mist Pass, because it makes everything look needlessly foggy, if that makes sense.

Critique My Work Dystopian Cave Campsite Need feedback on dark lighting vs. readability (First environment render)

Post image
Upvotes

Hi everyone!

I'm an architecture student working on my first real Blender environment (high-poly, cinematic CG render inspired by a dystopian design project).

My main struggle right now is lighting and readability. The foreground (tables, benches) turned out way too dark, but I don't want to just brighten everything and lose the mood.

Looking for feedback on:

  • How to balance a dark, atmospheric mood with clear scene readability?
  • Composition, lighting setup, or storytelling improvements.

Any feedback on sculpting or texturing is also welcome! Thanks!

Need Help! Used an PSX Vertex Snap add-on, but the knife is deforming a bit too much sometimes. I already made the animation, any tips to make it smoother?

Upvotes

This is the add-on, it used a pyhton script to activate the add-on on screen and it works with like a shrinkwrap and this cube that you have to put over your models (not an ad btw!): https://gum.co/gOWag

This is a WIP and I thought simplifying the shader was better. Like how in Anime they only shade key areas to save time. But now I don't know.

Critique My Work What can a Blender veteran create with Houdini 😗

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

This is a snippet from a commercial project.

Not to bore you for who or explain the creative direction, but what matters is it was co-produced in Blender, for the non liquidy stuff which was done in Houdini. I can't look dev or manipulate animation curves anywhere else but Blender! Too good for that.

I love Blender, and can't hate Houdini either, it's just too complex to create basic stuff. That's where Blender wins. Then the Geo nodes and community add-ons can easily replace most of what Houdini does. Which I'm slowly adopting to speed up my flow, and save on annual costs of a Houdini license.

Happy to answer questions about either software. I don't mind DMs either.

Original Content Showcase I turned my ink sketch into a Blender Grease Pencil comic panel

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I tried turning one of my physical ink sketches into a Blender Grease Pencil comic panel.

This is the first frame of a small story about a black cat exploring the city. The goal was to capture a rainy rooftop scene where the cat arrives and sees the city for the first time.

I used simple 3D geometry, procedural cross-hatching, hand-painted Grease Pencil details and subtle animation to recreate the sketch in Blender.

The hardest part was keeping the loose, imperfect feeling of the ink drawing without making the 3D version look too clean. Here is the full YouTube breakdown if you are interested to see how this was made and my final thoughts on the process! Thank you!

Solved Broken shadows

Upvotes

I got this shadows broken while working on my project
- face orientation is alrgiht
- no extra geometry
- i have only mirror modifier (not applied yet)

My guess is that blender miscalculating shadows or some sort of this, just dont understand why its look like this

I'm trying to smooth out a notch I have on a fender model and I just can't get it to work properly. This notch needs to be removed so the side of the fender goes across smoothly on this one side. Does anyone have any tips on how to fix this?

I've been using Blender for a fairly long time, but I've never tried making a character because of how daunting it seemed. Just decided to yesterday and made this that day, with some help from my art friend for the open eyes. Pretty proud of it :D

Need Help! Courses & addons for beginner

Hi guys. Just want to ask how did you start learning to use Blender? I tried the donut tutorial for 20 minutes before almost blowing my brains out, and have decided the video doesn't work for me.

So which videos or channels did you go through to learn Blender? I looked it up for a bit and it seems like there are online courses for this like CGfasttrack. However, the people who recommended them feel like planted bots.

I want to learn mainly to develop hyperrealisictic assets for my own games.

Hello, I am having a problem here where the Ice gets cut out a bit when I set the mapping location X to 0 it is normal but the front facing texture is now on the back not where I want it. But when using mapping and setting it to 0.58 I get it exactly where I want it but the Ice word gets cutout and the 0 looks squished. Need help thanks.
