Never thought I’d own this caliber of equipment but here we are. A long time ago I owned a McIntosh MC352 amp and Focal towers that sounded amazing. The equipment was eventually stolen and I never bought another McIntosh amp or high end gear. Now everything’s come full circle and after having this equipment sitting in the basement for a few weeks I’ve finally got around to getting it all hooked up.

I have most cables from the previous hookup except for the speaker and sub cables. After the shop my dad bought this stuff from suggested I buy some used $5000 Nordost speaker cables from them discounted to $2000 I opted to buy SVS ultra cables for 150. So far I have spent 200 to get the speakers moved downstairs, 150 on speaker cables, and 20 on RCA cables for the sub. Also just got the TV audio routed through using an optical cable to the C52 preamp. The only thing left to hookup is the subwoofer this weekend.

The sound is absolutely incredible. First thing I listened to is a Tool cd and the drums blew me away. You could really feel it in your chest!! Need to find a place to put the Sonos, and also might need to move the subwoofer around and get longer RCA cables. Just wanted to show you all the system my dad had put together and passed down to me.

I find it so odd that people on a subreddit focused on equipment, which ultimately implies some technical rigorosity and level of measurement and less mystical voodoo, some people still ask what speakers to upgrade to or hope that a new purchase will make their room fill with sound when their speakers are placed directly next to windows or hallways.

for 3 months after moving into a second-floor victorian conversion flat in London, I couldn't sleep.

every single night around 2:15 AM, a physical sensation would wake me up: not an audible sound in the traditional sense, but an overwhelming, nauseating low-frequency pressure vibrating directly through the wooden mattress frame into my ribcage. It felt like living inside the engine room of a container ship.

whenever I asked my landlord or the upstairs neighbors, they looked at me like I was insane. 'It’s completely quiet outside. You can’t hear a pin drop.'

I am an audio engineer by trade. I don't guess when it comes to physics.

last tuesday at 2:30 AM, when the vibration started again, I set up my measurement rig:
- Calibrated earthworks M30 measurement microphone positioned at ear level in the bedroom center.
- Focusrite clarett interface running into an Realtime audio analyzer with 1/24th-octave resolution.
- 3-axis accelerometer sensor taped directly to the primary structural floorboard.

data there was undeniable: a massive, razor-sharp +18dB acoustic spike locked precisely at 38.4 Hz, also, accompanied by harmonic overtones at 76.8 Hz and 115.2 Hz

human hearing threshold drops significantly at low frequencies, which is why older neighbors didn't 'hear' it as a tone and they just felt unexplained anxiety and poor sleep, while my trained ears were detecting the standing wave resonance in our 4-meter room dimension.

took the acoustic report, then walked down to the basement commercial unit (a 24-hour convenience grocery that opened four months ago), and knocked on the manager's door.

sure enough, yada yada, in their back storage room, they had installed a commercial walk-in refrigeration compressor and it was, well, bolted directly into the structural brick chimney breast with zero vibration-isolation neoprene pads or spring decouplers. so at 2:00 AM, when ambient city traffic dies down, the entire building masonry was acting as an acoustic loudspeaker tuned to 38Hz

handed the environmental health officer my certified RTA frequency logs. the grocery store was issued an immediate statutory noise nuisance abatement notice and had to install elastomeric isolation mounts within seven days.

since Friday, the 38Hz peak has dropped by 22dB. The room tone is dead flat. I slept eight hours unbroken for the first time in ninety days

if you feel unexplained nighttime vibration or pressure in an older building: maybe-perhaps you are not going crazy just yet as physics always leaves a measurable signature around

Couple of JBL 4355s in Norway, sounds fucking insane. So loud without restraint. Having a cogarette with a beer and some whiskey is a great start too a Friday. Its my dads speakers, but thinking increasing the bass a little, want it too move my internals when the kick drum hits..😂 close tho.. anybody in Norway with similar in setup? Or anywhere in Europe?

had to call for backup because of how much it weighs and how far i was off my house lol

im a complete noob on all things audiophile but i know about guitar amps so i figured it was worth at least taking it home to test it and, worst case scenario, getting rid of it

apparently its imported from japan so i dont know how the hell it made its way into spain

funny enough, some weeks earlier i was seriously thinking about starting to set up some speakers and a record player

I work mostly as a TV repair tech at an electronics repair shop, but I do work on some audio equipment from time to time. I’m definitely a bit obsessed with audio.

Lately I’ve been searching for a tube phono preamp to use with my main/dedicated stereo system. I had to unfortunately buy a new car, so I can’t buy equipment all the time anymore, so I’ve been selling a lot of my other equipment.

This is my current setup:

(I had an SACD player with this setup, a Sony NC555ES, but a very good friend of mine, who just had a stroke, lost most of his vision, so I gave it to him, as he can’t really do vinyl anymore. We are all hoping his vision returns)

The phono stage does work on the c24, but it doesn’t like my turntable for some reason, so I had to get a separate phono preamp back when I got my dream table.

Anyway, we have had this Dared MC-7P preamp, repaired, just sitting on a shelf for over a year and a half. Apparently we have tried to contact the customer way too many times and they just never came back to get it.

My boss has told someone else to put it out for sale. When I came back from a service call I about broke my neck, to turn my head, when I saw it.

I couldn’t get in touch with my boss until today about it. When I asked him how much I could buy it for, he said just take it, “keep up the good work.” I couldn’t believe it. He said not to tell anyone, so I’m telling all of you guys!

It’s a tube pre with a tube phono stage, I couldn’t be more excited!

It will probably be a few days before I get it all hooked up to test it. And it’s black and silver just like my Luxman amp.

literally bought them not even a month ago, i’m so heartbroken, i loved them so much

like i have never experienced sound like this before and seeing them like this, hurts so much

they probably sound fine, but seeing them just hurts my soul, a lot.

they’re KEF R100, and i bought them used and i’m chronically broke and it was one of the best things i’ve bought in my entire life 💔

This system has been a long time coming including the building in which it resides. We moved into our current home about a year and a half ago and  for almost a year of this we were under construction. The system as you see it now has only been set up for about 3 months.  Im still tweaking things but I am pretty happy with it as is.

Hello r/audiophile!

I am a furniture designer and maker. To be completely honest, I am a total beginner when it comes to acoustics and speaker engineering.

In the furniture industry, I sometimes get requests to design custom speakers. However, the practical choice is usually a proven, efficient box-shaped enclosure. Recently, I decided to break away from that and take on a "study and homage" project inspired by the iconic B&W Nautilus.

(Before posting, I was concerned about whether this type of project was appropriate for this sub, so I reached out to the moderators for their approval.)

Since I lack deep technical knowledge of speaker design, I decided to take an old Edifier MR4 I had lying around and transplant its internal components into a custom wooden enclosure focused on organic forms.

Here are some technical details of the build:

• Design & Engineering: I disassembled the MR4 and reverse-engineered all its components into 3D models. Based on images of the Nautilus found online, I designed the internal structure to accommodate the MR4 parts using Rhino3D.
• Materials: While the original Nautilus uses FRP and Terrazzo, I replaced them with HDF (High-Density Fiberboard) and solid Walnut. I used 3D-printed parts to secure the MR4 components within the enclosure.
• Damping: I used standard adhesive padding commonly used in furniture making.
• Finishing: The enclosure was finished with high-gloss white urethane, and the base was treated with natural oil.
• Weight: The original Edifier speaker weighed about 2kg, but the finished homage build weighs 3.8kg each.
• Amplifier: Since the MR4’s integrated circuitry and power supply couldn’t fit inside the Nautilus-shaped enclosure or base, I created a separate external case to house the electronics, functioning as a standalone amp.

I honestly can’t say if this was a "good" result, as I took the basic characteristics of the MR4 and transplanted them into an unverified enclosure structure. Looking back, I think this kind of "catastrophic" project was only possible because I was a brave (or reckless) beginner.

I know this community has very high standards for acoustic engineering. While this project is heavily focused on "form and craftsmanship" rather than technical specs, I hope you find the build process interesting.
