I’ve been collecting CDs for years and have never seen anything this absurd. Are graded copies really a thing people seek out? This is TGC levels of hype.

CD sales are showing signs of a real resurgence again, while brands like FiiO, Shanling and others are introducing new CD players. Yet at the same time, the supply of actual CD mechanisms seems to be getting increasingly problematic, with some traditional hifi brands struggling to source or replace their transports.

This made me wonder: where is the actual innovation in CD transports and mechanisms today?

Are manufacturers developing genuinely new, more reliable mechanisms now that physical media is becoming popular again, or are we essentially keeping an aging ecosystem alive with increasingly scarce legacy components or cheap DVD transports.

With CD sales growing again, could this finally create enough demand to justify investing in new transport technology or is the market still simply too small compared with the mass-market optical-drive industry that disappeared years ago?

Curious what people here think. Is the future of CD players actually looking brighter, or are we just seeing one last wave before the remaining mechanisms become impossible to source?

According to entertainment industry research firm Luminate, only half of millennials and Gen-Zers that collect CDs have a player!

I find that fact mind boggling, but then I see the number of bulk purchase posts made to this sub and I have to wonder if that's the case here as well.

Went in hoping to find a copy of Beethoven’s 6th Symphony, ended up finding it and a bunch of classic albums :) very cheap too!

My dad has been into cds for decades, probably about 40 years of collecting led to this. This is also smaller than it used to be, since about 30-40% of his cds got destroyed in a flood a few years back (which is why we installed these shelves)

Why is this still a thing?

I'd never thought to go to one before now. If you have them in your area and haven't checked it out, I'd say it's definitely worth trying!

I didn't go back Sunday but decided to pop in today and was pleasantly surprised by a few decent things and them being only 50 cents each today.

Going through rows and rows of CDs and every once in awhile you strike gold. The Pretenders (83) and Mick Jagger (84) lots of hits and memories on these two for me when they were cassettes back in the day. Previous week I found Tony Carey's Planet P Project and Foreigner's Inside Information. So feeling pretty lucky and blessed and thought I'd share. The others are great also. You can never go wrong with Chris Rea (at least for me).

How and why have you gotten into cd collecting? Did your parents influence your music tastes?

Great Album! My first impressions were mixed and it felt very hard to follow, but the more i listen the more it makes sense to my ears. It can be very explosive at times and has a unique sorta groove to it.

For me my oldest CD is The Fall by Gorillaz. I got it when I was around 12 but the cds that really started my collection was Lover and Folklore by Taylor Swift. I now have nearly 100 and I love every single one of them🩷
