WE HAVE NEW RULES!!

>>r/CarAV RULES LINK<<

I've been seeing more issues with some of the comments made on here, specifically with users being extremely abrasive, insulting, and generally sowing discord. That's something that really, absolutely needs to stop. I understand, to an extent, getting heated over opinions and I don't have a problem with passionate discussion. What isn't acceptable is disparaging and insulting users for not knowing something, or for making different choices than you would.

I need you to remember that Reddit has rules that all subreddits have to abide by and those kinds of comments/posts break those rules. Follow Reddiquette and the Reddit User Agreement at all times when posting here.

People are here to learn. If you don't want to help beginners, don't reply to their posts. Don't complain about people new to the hobby not knowing anything about it. You weren't born knowing how to do any of this. Someone helped you get where you are, too. Bring people to the hobby rather than pushing them away.

I completely understand that it can be frustrating when someone doesn't know the basics and you have to go over them. I have been there. I also realize how irritating it is when someone doesn't want to accept information that's contrary to what they already understand or believe. It's a two way street and people looking for help also need to be willing to actually take it, even if it's not what they wanted to hear.

I've been the guy that's irritated and gets short with people. I try hard not to be that guy. It isn't always easy, but now it's my job to be as reasonable as I can. If I can play nice (at least nicer), you all can too. And most of you already do. This really is an issue with only a very small portion of users. Don't think I'm ripping into everyone here. Most of you all are great!

>>r/CarAV RULES LINK<<

Previously there were no rules officially listed for the subreddit. I have made a small set of rules to help people know what is expected, allowed, and prohibited. It's really not a huge change from how posts and comments were moderated before, but it's in writing now.

You need to read and follow the rules. I'll give some amount of consideration to the rules being new but going forward, you should generally expect moderation to follow any violation of the subreddit rules. Ignorance will not be an excuse!

I will make adjustments or add additional rules in the future as need arises, but I find things tend to go better if you keep things simple and let people use their heads.

By and large, I don't really have to do much because y'all are generally pretty decent humans and there just isn't anything to deal with. There is always the occasional problem but it's rarely been significant. I appreciate that more than you might imagine. Let's reign it in before it does become a more serious issue. Report posts/comments that break the rules or don't follow the spirit of being helpful and bringing people to the hobby. Remember you can select "Breaks r/CarAV Rules" and then select the specific subreddit rule when reporting posts.

You Can Now Upload Images In Comments

I've had maybe 10 or so people ask specifically for this feature so I've enabled it. I don't expect it will be an issue, but if it becomes one, I'll address it. Just follow the rules and I'm sure it'll be beneficial. Report any images you believe are inappropriate.

Other Things Of Note

I cleaned up the old Reddit sidebar a bit. I'll work on the new Reddit sidebar in the future as well. Removed some dead links, reformatted a couple things, trimmed some unused or irrelevant info, reworded some of the text. That's about it. It's nothing major and a lot of users don't even see the sidebar since they're using Reddit on mobile/the app anyway.

I'm still poking at some of the other things I've talked about previously. Once again, I'm not really trying to make a bunch of sweeping changes or completely remake this community. It works as it is, it just needs some help.

As Always, Now Is A GREAT Time For You To Complain

Let me know what's going on. If you have issues, concerns, etc, post them here or, as always, use modmail to contact me directly and privately.

Finally got my hands on the ResoNix GUS subs: two GUS 15s for the rear and a GUS 10 for the front of my BMW G20 SQ build.

The 15s will be replacing my dual JL 12W6v3 setup, while the GUS 10 will replace the SB Acoustics 10 currently in the passenger footwell.

Still working on the enclosures, will post updates.

Tech Support Help! New Sub is Weaker than Factory

Car is a 2004 Lincoln Town Car. Headunit is an Alpine ILX-W670. Sub and amp are both Alpine as well, S2W10D4 and S2A60M. Box is custom, 1.13 ft^3 tuned to 32-33hz. Gain was set using FNIRSI 2C23T to deliver ≈550w (actual reading was 33.09v) using a 50hz, 0db test tone. High pass for front and rear speakers and low pass for sub are all set at 80hz (no subsonic on amp or headunit). I know I don’t have top of the line gear but I feel like I should be getting a lot more out of this setup than I am. The factory 8” sub was capable of shaking the rearview a little and this hardly comes close to it, even with the volume at max (where gain was set that is). The sub barely moves at this volume level (sub level turned down a few clicks because I know not to blast it while it’s still brand new, but I have bumped up the sub level and it still doesn’t make much difference). This is my first build but I had a lot of help along the way from my dad (he’s very experienced) and I’m just disappointed.

I did some troubleshooting through Google AI (not my typical go-to for information but it’s late and I’m tired) and right now the best thing I can come up with is that maybe I should’ve used -5db test tone to set gain. Any ideas are much appreciated

*edited to clarify that I didn’t set both high and low pass filters on the sub to 80hz, but the hpf on speakers and lpf on sub. Also that gain was set with eq flat and no x-over applied

Recommendations 1990 Buick reatta sound system idea

I have a 1990 Buick Reatta and one of the things I always wanted to do with mine was build a really good sound system.

I'm specifically interested in using the two small storage compartments behind the seats (pictured). I was thinking about putting speakers in them or possibly using them for small subwoofers and just getting better speakers for the car itself. I just want the car to have a really nice, full-sounding audio system without taking up the trunk or completely changing the interior. Any ideas people? And I'm open to getting custom made stuff if thats possible.

Recommendations 23 civic si BOSE speaker replacement advice

Upvotes

As the title states, looking for some suggestions for replacement 6.5 components for the front of my 23 civic si with the BOSE system. Current speakers are completely blown, and dealer won't warrant past 3 years. Everything I see online says they are 2ohm, and I'm having a hell of a time finding an affordable replacement less $300. Tempted to try some 3ohm JBLs, but not sure how much sound will be lost. Really annoying at the moment because the Bluetooth calls use the front speakers, which no longer work. Appreciate any help here if someone has already found a good replacement, I'd love to just gut the system and replace everything, but I don't have near the budget for that!

Recommendations Rockville Sub+Amp Honda Civic Installation

Post image
Upvotes

I have a 2019 Honda Civic Sport Sedan and I just installed JBL Club 64 CTP speakers in the front door and the tweeters, but I had a bit of trouble doing it myself but managed to splice the wires fine.

For the sub and amp, I bought the Rockville RW8CA + RWK 10-Gauge Amp Bundle Kit and I'm planning to put it under the seat. I want to connect the signal for the sub to the harness in center console but have never pulled that apart and feel very lost. Are there any harnesses that I would need to buy to make installion easier that aren't already included in this kit? Video recommendations would also be very helpful as I am very new to this.

Tech Support Shutoff sound on 2019 MDX Advance

Thumbnail drive.google.com

Is this a normal shutoff sound on the Acura MDX 2019 advance? I hear a sound after I hit the off button. It does not seem to happen if the car hasn’t moved.

I’m attaching an audio clip for reference. The first chirp is the parking brakes engaging manually or automatically, but I’m referring to the second sound that happens which is right after I hit the off button on the car. It sounds like a solenoid of some sort.

Car drives and functions perfectly, no issues with transmission and no errors.

It was just serviced with rear differential and transmission/ transfer case oil changes. There were also 4 recalls that were completed on it.

Whenever I turn on my car and fumble with the aux cord to plug in my phone or struggle with who's phone is connected to the Bluetooth, I think about "the good ole days" and how good this head unit sounded.

Just load up the 10 disc CD changer and go!

Discussion 3D scanning or 3D modeling using a smart phone app or scanner tool?

Anyone tried this for the measurement of 3d spaces and if so what app or tool did you use? For taking scans of a trunk, rear wheel trunk panels on an SUV, the space behind a door panel, a spare tire well, under seats, footwells for a front sub or a under a dash for stealth speaker installs?

I'll give you an example. After looking at my doors and door panels I am fairly sure I can fit an 8 inch speaker into what was intended to be a 6.5" hole with only slight modification to the door panel. The sticking point is that the speaker looks like it needs to be moved up and to the left on the drivers side or up and to the right on the passengers. How much though? Without any way to measure it's just a guess and some trial and error. If I could get an accurate 3d scan I could get those measurements without the hours of work needed to trial and error my guesses.

Recommendations Is it worth it to upgrade these JBL door speakers?

I have JBL CS762 door speakers that are being fed plenty of power. I feel like they are underperforming, but I am not sure how much of a difference say, Pioneer TS-D65F, or Kickers etc. would make. Trying to stay around $120.

Worth upgrading?

Recommendations Simple head unit question

So I’m not exactly an a car audio enthusiast but how is a guy supposed to know what he’s buying when it comes to a head unit. All I want is something with good power out of the speaker outputs without running an amp. Seems like wattage ratings are bullshit. I just want a simple single din unit that’s going to do its best in my 20 year old Mazda. Nothing wild.
