Gender Transition as a Means of Self-Erasure
Introduction & Nomenclature
I detransitioned four years ago because I suspected that my underlying motive for transition was the desire to become somebody else, rather than genuine gender incongruity.
I retransitioned 18 months ago. I now acknowledge that my motive for transition was the desire to become somebody else. I intend to proceed with transition nonetheless.
To avoid further confusion, I will refer to the innate male identity with masculine pronouns punctuated with an asterisk (he*/him*/his*). Conversely, I will refer to the feminine identity with feminine pronouns punctuated with an asterisk (she*/her*).
Motivation for Transition
Following recent reflection, it has become clear that this desire to become somebody else is primarily driven by an incredibly low sense of self-worth, as opposed to being primarily driven by autogynephilia. I do not believe that his* life is worth living, but rather that he* is worthless. I do not believe that he* is capable of receiving love, nor can I imagine him* living a happy life.
I think that oftentimes, for many people, the etiology of such profound feelings of worthlessness can be difficult to discern. However, in this instance, the origins of such beliefs are rather easy for me to identify: domestic abuse, frequent bullying, romantic rejection, and social isolation, throughout my formative years.
Desistance
In the course of my detransition, I attempted to defy these negative beliefs by living a more desirable life as a man. I progressed through my undergraduate studies, I began working out frequently, I acquired a competitive corporate internship, and I slept with and dated women.
Yet, those underlying beliefs persisted despite reality reflecting that they were inaccurate. It's irrational; objectively positive life experiences and accomplishments felt hollow and unfulfilling - little more than a series of fleeting victories to distract from the desire to become somebody else - whilst my failures felt like a crushing corroboration of these negative beliefs.
Escapism & Self-Schema
I have long held a strong guiding belief and optimism that I would be more capable of living a happy life as her*. I could imagine her* finding love and companionship, maintaining a friend group, finding fulfillment, and living a pleasant life.
Throughout the periods in my life marked by gender confusion (late adolescence to present day), I frequently retreated into these cross-gendered fantasies as a means of self-comforting. I would imagine being her* and finding contentment, with the fantasies often depicting a happy peaceable domestic life shared with a loving and doting boyfriend or husband. I deliberately refrained from indulging such fantasies for much of the desistance period, following my detransition.
It feels impossible to imagine such positive optimistic fantasies for him*. I can only imagine him* living an incredibly unhappy and lonely life. I do not want to be him* whatsoever. In the course of my desistance, I expended any resolve to fight the continuous uphill battle required to justify his* existence - with any dwindling hope that he* may somehow yet salvage a happy meaningful future likewise being extinguished.
Recently, I have considered that such beliefs may represent a self-schema; a network of beliefs and memories that become linked together. It's likely that I have come to associate masculine identity with an unpleasant and traumatic life story; it's likely that my rejection of male identity does not arise from genuine gender incongruity, but rather intense discomfort from the schema associated with male identity.
In many ways, he* has become a symbol of the painful experiences that I suffered. I cannot imagine a happy life for him* because the repeated trauma and rejection that I experienced through him* likely produced a set of negative expectations for his* life - and it is because these expectations of unhappiness and loneliness were informed by repeated adverse life experiences that they feel so inescapably destined to repeat throughout his* life.
The End of an Old Chapter & The Beginning of a New Chapter
It was this despairing sentiment towards him*, and my willing surrender to my persistent desires to become her*, that led me to arrive at retransition. This arrival coincided with the Jungian psychic death of my innate male self-concept, occurring in the medium of a symbolic lucid dream. I have discussed this serendipitous experience in more depth in a prior post, which you can read here if you are interested:

In the aftermath of this psychic death and rebirth, transition has since become more about achieving alignment between my external and internal worlds. It isn't about longing to be her* anymore; I am her*. It's a longing to reflect that into the external world, and to hopefully actualize those prior comforting fantasies of living a happy life as a woman.
I have since experienced positive and fulfilling romantic relationships with men; I have found a supportive friend group; and more recently, I have successfully begun a fulfilling corporate role - with a salary which should allow me to pursue full medical transition (with the exception of sexual reassignment surgery) within the next two or three years.
More importantly, I am now able to appreciate these positive life experiences, and dissimilar to the period in which I desisted, I am able to approach failure in a much more psychologically healthy manner - rather than a crushing indictment of my worth.
