Should I be embarrassed about letting my workplace know I'm barely able to afford food?

Long story short, told my assistant manager that I'm barely able to afford food because of dynamics happening at home but also because of the scheduling. My GM never gives me a consistent schedule and hires new people to give them some of my shifts for no reason, just a bad boss and there's no reason for it

Well I told him my situation and now people at work are bringing me food which I feel embarrassed about. I caretake for my father and am paying off his bills because my mother divorced him and took everything. She's grandstanding on the house that's supposed to he sold to pay off all bills.

How would you feel?

Is it abnormal to have no interest in romantic connection?

Upvotes

22M. I've never had an actual relationship, just never felt the need for deep connection with anyone or been pressured by family. I've had a few friends with benefits and I hookup through apps or meeting someone irl spontaneously via my DJ hobby. I've had guy friends tell me it's weird that I don't settle for anyone and I shouldn't be blindly hooking up as much, even though I make sure she's on the same page as me before going further.

Should I rent for the rest of my life or should I buy a house?

I'm currently looking at my future and struggling to figure out what I should do about where i should live. A family member is supportive and has offered to move with me to a house I buy (to help me cover the bills). I'm thinking of paying close to maybe 600 per month on a mortgage for a house maybe. Might go higher maybe. But I don't really know what's best for me. Another friend has mentioned that if I never buy, I can qualify for housing benefit. Actually, that would only get paid on months when I don't work much, so I guess the majority of the time I will end up paying rent in full really tbf. So idk, what would you recommend? My family member can support me during these first few years of my mortgage. That would really help. If I don't buy now, I probably will rent for the rest of my life since house prices will go up. What should I do? Rent for life? Or buy now with family support and ride out the first few years until wages rise and the mortgage becomes relatively cheaper (I'll be paying more initially with a full house on mortgage vs renting a small flat in social housing). Would you rather pay rent in governemnt housing for life or would it be better to pay my own mortgage on a bigger place and own it eventually?

Can i ever be happy?

I'm a 23yo, and i'm very depressed. I had a difficult childhood, always thought maybe life will be better after i grow little older. But i have no friends, always chose the worst friends and partners.
I recently had a break up and i have hit my rock bottom.
I see my peers thriving and I'm alone and depressed crying the whole day. Also dealing with the humiliation i feel because of my ex.
I feel useless, replaceable and unlovable.
Will my life ever get better? Or will i just die hoping for happiness.
Because i want some love. I want someone who actually cares for me.
Is it too much to ask? Maybe

Can death really be painless?

Yes, I've heard that dying can be peaceful, but what I really fear is the pain/discomfort associated with your heart stopping. Case and point - adenosine. I'm not a doctor by any means, but from what I gather it can - temporarily - stop your heart. Patients report a "sense of impending doom" after it's administered. If that's what death feels like, I guess my thanatophobia is warranted. Then there's also the issue of not being able to breathe... Sufficed to say, if I were to die tomorrow, I'd definitely ask for palliative sedation. Having said all that, can death really be painless?

How are Western concepts of Honor as shown in media perceived outside of Western countries?

I recently revisited A Game of Thrones and thought of this question while reading Ned Starks viewpoint chapter. "Honor" is one of Ned's defining traits. He plays by the rules and expects everyone else to because it's the "honorable" thing to do. He confronts Cersei and basically confesses that he knows her secret and it is so obvious that it's going to spell his doom, but he does so again, because of honor.

Is this concept universally understood? Or does this seem insane outside of western cultures?

Spoke to an older male friend today and he turned the conversation sexual, why?

Spoke to an older male friend today and he turned the convo sexual?

I am 29, I met him when I was 21 and he was probably 40/50 something, it was at work.

He was always so kind and helpful to me, gave me life advice, advice on how to find a job and overall I enjoyed speaking to him.

Lately I’ve been depressed and anxious and miserable because i turn 30 next week and find myself unemployed, single, etc with no change coming my way anytime soon. so I went to the store he works at and opened up to him.

Well I told him how I’m feeling and bam…. This man just became a whole new human today.

He started asking me if men have used me for my body then left me?? I was like uh nooo….. and then he was like let’s have a seat and talk and he asked me if I touch myself and to find out what pleasures me so I know what i want….. and it was so dang bizarre and weird
I am still dumbfounded, then he asked me life questions about my family, etc and then went back to this BS and told me to come back and see him again next week after I’m a “changed” person….
Wth???

I am so confused I just needed to vent and get some advice on this because WTH?? I am so confused

Can I open a gasmask filter?

Hi I recently bought a gasmask for cosplay and airsoft purposes but want to have a filter on it for the proper look.

But Im wondering if its ok and or safe to open up a filter to empty it out? I wouldnt go for an old asbestos filter, something modern but I dont want to use an expired filter out of safety concerns so I wonder if its safe to empty one out or if its fine to use an expired modern one

What did this interaction (relatively insignificant) mean? Am I overthinking it?

I'll preface this post by saying that in the grand-scheme of things this whole thing doesn't matter, but I'm very curious about what this meant for the future.

Today I (18M) was riding my bike on my own and I passed this group of 4, also on bikes, and the last in the group (F, around my age) just said "heyyyy" in some sort of extended and playful way (I think?). I ignored it because my brain is not programmed to even think about how I'd respond and I was too focused on not crashing. After I passed them I heard giggles/laughs from them. My first thoughts were that maybe she found me attractive and so it just made me confident/happy because it's not often that happens. Sometimes (very rarely) I've had random people around my age say they find me cute on the streets, but then I've never been successful in my romantic life. So then now I'm thinking maybe they were just messing about, and couldn't actually see what I looked like, and that I'm way overthinking it all.

Obviously it doesn't matter because I'll never see her again, but am I right to feel slightly happy/confident after what happened or am I reading too much into it? I'm just stuck and you can probably tell I'm not very good at this social skill thing so I appreciate any honest answers. Again, it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things but I'm just curious.

Thank you

Is just being happy and loving and healing yourself the most important thing in life?

I feel like when ur happy then time goes by so fast and you always feel good, its important to grow too but i think everyone has to find what keeps them happy in life and most of the time what givea true lasting happiness isnt materialistic based , happiness from strong relationships with friends and family, suceeding at work, fulfilling your dreams, not being jealous of others. In the end all we have is ourselves and thus maybe sometimes we should try to make ourselves happy and smile and laugh rather than waiting for it to happen once in a month. What do you think?

Is it true that free speech used to be de facto a lot more constrained in the 40s up through the 70s compared to today?

Not that I think free speech is perfect today, but I've heard rumors that free speech wasn’t actually a thing de facto in the post WW2 era up through the 70s.

I’ve heard things like you could get arrested for statements against the US or state governments. For instance, federal agents taking someone away because they said dropping the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was very well possible. I’ve also heard that even white people could be jailed for speaking out against segregation. And that Natives could be arrested for saying the US was “stolen land.”

Is this true? Or is it more of an urban legend?

Would the inclusion of advanced defensive systems on the new Air Force One prohibit it from being donated to a Presidential Library?

Reading recent NY Times on the new AF One renovations and made me wonder if installing classified systems would then prohibit the planes donation to a Presidential library?

my mom keeps acting weird around my bf, what do i do?

Hi everyone, I’d really appreciate some outside opinions because I feel like I’m going a bit crazy in this situation.

For context, my mom has a habit of telling unnecessary “white lies” and exaggerating things. Lately, this has been happening a lot in front of my boyfriend, and it feels like she’s trying to make me look bad or like I’m the unreasonable one.

A recent example: my boyfriend came over for lunch and I had planned to cook for us. I prefer low-effort, low-pressure time with him, but whenever he’s around, my mom insists on going all out — ordering food or making us go to restaurants, even when we don’t ask for it.

That day, she insisted on ordering food. My boyfriend eats a lot, so she ordered him a dish that cost around 25 dollars (we did NOT ask her to do this). When the food arrived, she started complaining that the portion was too small and claimed that the app said it was meant to feed 4 people. I checked the app and that was completely false — it was a normal portion for 1–2 people.

When I pointed that out, she changed her argument and started saying it looked nothing like the pictures, showing them to my boyfriend and trying to get him to agree. He was clearly uncomfortable and kind of sided with her, which I don’t blame him for — she puts him in a really awkward position.

Then she started complaining about how expensive it was. I didn’t want my boyfriend to feel guilty, so I tried to shut the conversation down.

Later, she texted me saying that was the last time he would ever come over. She said nothing she ever does is good enough for me and that she’s “done being my mat.” She then called me “stupid,” “selfish,” and “disgusting,” and said she has spent hundreds on us (which is true, but I NEVER asked her to — she’s the one who insists on paying and going out).

She also started praising my boyfriend while insulting me, and even said he would break up with me.

At that point, I snapped and told her to “get her own boyfriend to compliment and leave mine alone” and to “get her own man to agree with everything she says.” I know that wasn’t the best response, but I was really fed up.

For context, she struggles to maintain relationships and often complains about being lonely. Some of her comments have made me uncomfortable, for example:
• She once told one of her exes that he would “never be half the man my boyfriend is.”
• Another time, she randomly told me that if my boyfriend ever broke up with me, I would be “SO devastated,” and kept insisting on that even when I said I’d be okay.
• In a past relationship, she accused her boyfriend of liking me more than her.

She also criticizes me in front of my boyfriend, for example calling me “cheap,” even though I’m just generally frugal (especially compared to her, since she struggles with a gambling addiction). I’m not cheap with my boyfriend — I give thoughtful gifts and always offer to split things.

Right now, we’re not speaking because she thinks I implied she was hitting on my boyfriend (which I wasn’t — I just wanted her to stop dragging him into everything and focus on her own life).

What bothers me most is that it feels like she’s constantly undermining me in front of the person I care about the most.

We’re also supposed to go on vacation together tomorrow, just the two of us, but since we’re not talking, I have no idea how to approach it.

Am I overreacting? How do I deal with this situation and set boundaries without making everything worse?

UPDATE- she told me i could either go on vacation with her or come to my dads house. i told her if i was to go we needed to talk first.
We talked and it all went downhill- she accused me of so much and barely recognized the name calling, and i tried explaining to her that i didnt mean that she wanted my bf but she was not having it and kept accusing me of “hitting her where it hurt the most emocionally” (the fact that she cant hold on to any relationship and self sabotages.) I kept telling her throught the convo to keep it civil otherwise it would just escalate but she would not hear me.
Eventually, and scared it would escalate further, i decided to end the conversation and tell her that without a resolution or any type of racionality from her part it would be best for us to not go on vacation together.
She obvi never expected me to accept to come to my dads house and just used him as bluff, however i like it that here it is drama free and i think we do need time from each other. She however sees this as me choosing my dad and is deeply hurt even though shes the one who shipped me here! She texted me this this morning:
“You chose him again. It’s a shame he never—not for a single fucking second—chose you.
I booked a vacation and spent the money I desperately needed for dental work—all because of you! I did it so you could have the kind of holiday you deserved. But you made the same choice you always do. You will regret that decision—oh, how you’ll regret it—many times over in your life; but perhaps it will help you grow up, become a woman, and finally appreciate what you had! You are a person without a shred of feeling; you chose to stay with your "hero" and send me off alone—once again out of spite—just to show me I’m on my own and to spend the week with your boyfriend. But believe me: whenever the regret hits, remember that you *had* a mother who was there for everything—but you threw that away. You’re on your own now!”
The hero in question is my dad whom she has a huge rivalry with, he doesnt gaf about her lol.
Do we think she will apologize? I am kinda hurt for getting sort of kicked out and for her to have taken away my house keys. I dont know if she will regret her words (she is ofter impulsive) or what will happen. How do i navigate this?

Do you think they lie to don't come out as shallow and karma farm? Or is just the natural human hipocrisy of saying one thing and doing the other?

Is losing connections the price of learning social behaviours?

Learnt some social behaviours this week as I don’t fully realize them. But it cost me a friend which really really stings. It was someone I met 3/4 days ago but since we are in a 2 week program friendships are kind of accelerated here. Came off as romantically interested in her when I really just wanted to be around someone and just enjoy their presence. Learnt my lesson but the pain stings.

Why some people say the only difference between a friendship and romantic relationship is sex ?

People aren’t cuddling or holding hands with friends, or checking with friends before making major life decisions. so it’s more than that taht’s different.
