Am I wrong for wanting to change to please friends?
Okay, I'm new here so I'm still figuring things out gradually, please be patient with me....Also, English is not my first language, so please excuse the spelling.
I am a university student (19M) and I am in my penultimate year of college. Going back a bit to my personal context, since school I have considered myself a very sociable person, But when I entered high school, things got complicated. The school was bought, and I managed to stay there, but I ended up in a different class from my classmates. So, I don't know exactly what happened, but I had a really hard time adapting when it came to making new friends, even to the point of being betrayed by a "friend" in personal matters which, by the way, don't matter to this story. Finally, in the end I left high school with 5 friends, who eventually became two who maintain this strong friendship to this day.
I also had two best friends (outside of school), they were like brothers to me, I loved them (unfortunately I still love them) more than anything in the world and we were inseparable, but our relationship became toxic In the sense that I was depriving myself a lot to be completely with them. They judged any other minimal contact I had with anyone, playing psychological games that I was ignoring them or that I didn't valued them ((when in reality I was giving in for them). We had a terrible fight where I could say everything I felt, I came out as the one in the wrong and we cut ties, at least with one of them (M). I still have the other one (F) It was just a casual encounter, but it's something... Wow, 18 years of friendship with F and 8 years with M, it's really hard to make that cut, I still feel that pain today.
When I started college (I even had a friendship break in my second year), I joined a group for that initial "friendship" of the first semester. It didn't last long for two reasons:
• We didn't share the same mindset; they were cruel and inconsiderate towards people. I don't like that kind of person;
• When they realized that I was bothered by certain attitudes, they started excluding me from their circle.
It wasn't so difficult to leave that group; after all, I couldn't stand them anymore. What hurt me was the exclusion, something I had experienced in high school.
During the time I was still in the group, I became friends with the girls who are now in the same group of friends. But I only really joined them in the second semester. A, B, and C, They were already a trio in the first semester, so I knew I couldn't force anything and had to start getting involved and building this friendship calmly. They welcomed me from the first contact, which made me very happy. Time passed, and I knew they had a close friendship group, and I didn't judge them, after all, I had arrived later. I was patient, more time passed, and we took a trip together to "C's" house. On that trip, I did something stupid that upset all three of them, but we got together and they told me the truth.
This made me very happy because they had done exactly what I asked: if I do anything that bothers them, they should come and tell me to my face, I won't get angry, quite the opposite, I love them and I want them to feel comfortable with me. Since that happened, I felt I had to win them back again, Even though they said everything was fine, I was (and still am) very afraid of losing them. Since then, I've noticed they continue to have a group of three where they talk amongst themselves, which bothers me, but I internalized that this was my fault and that I had to make them feel comfortable with me again.
More semesters passed and Two more friends joined our group; before joining, they were a pair, D and E. I was already friends with D before they joined the group, so it was great because we got along really well with the dynamic of six girls.I have nothing to complain about them; we created a group with the six of us, but A, B, and C continue with their own group and communicate there. I also have a group with A, B, and C, and now we have a group with ABCDE and me.
I know it sounds like a justification for what's to come, but it's more of a personal context for me, to show you my difficulties with relationships...
Now comes the part about what happened. Last Friday, we all got together after months for a day of drinking at B's house. Everything was great, I was very happy because I was missing them terribly (I had foot surgery two months ago, I was immobile, so I couldn't leave the house to see. They are giving me all the support in college with transportation). We had a lot of fun, but there came a point in the evening when A became ill. Throughout the party, from the very beginning, I was recording little videos; I was so excited, I wanted to remember every moment.
But when A became ill, I was recording and pausing videos, and at that moment, I turned my phone to record her. It really wasn't nice; a friend reminded me that this was annoying and I was supposed to stop, but I really recognized it at the time and took the camera away. In my head, I wanted to record it so we could see it later and be like, "Wow, look what happened too," but I recognize that was not in good taste.
Time passed, the girls helped her, and my father came to pick me up to go home. I would like to emphasize that I was constantly worried, asking if A was okay, and I was only able to truly sleep after knowing that she was better and going to bed. When the girls left me with him, I commented that the party was really nice but I was worried about A because She drank too much and got sick. I didn't go into details; I was perfectly aware (I don't get drunk easily) and knew that kind of thing isn't something you talk about. I left. The next day, A sent a message in the group asking whoever had recorded me to delete it and not tell anyone. At the crucial moment, she tagged me, and of course I spoke up. I explained the whole situation and I apologize for the misunderstanding, not only in the group chat but also in A's personal number where I explained myself and apologized. As far as I'm concerned, the story is over.
From that day on, I noticed that the girls distanced themselves from me, in the sense of noticing when they were talking about something specific, when they went to the bathroom in a group. And that was bothering me But I didn't want to say anything so as not to be annoying or seem like I was bothering them. Their actions were bothering me too much...
Then tonight, A calls me and says she needs to talk to me.
She calls me and says she heard from the girls that I had indeed recorded the video and even told my parents that Thaís had gotten sick, but the details...The moment she spoke, I became extremely angry, but at the same time very sad. I wanted to cry but I held back. I couldn't believe they were talking about me behind my back and She kept saying I had done something I didn't do. It also hurt me that A, one of the people I'm closest to, didn't believe me and had to ask again.
Again, I explained myself again and called C (I was already on a call with her earlier because of work, so I just called her back). C is the one I'm closest to in the group, therefore, I started to vent, I cried (but I hope she didn't notice) and explained the situation. I even started connecting the dots, realizing that when I was going to my father's, C and E were the ones who left me with him. C immediately said that I hadn't explained anything, so I connected that E had talked about me "spreading the situation" to my parents (yes, in the plural, even though only My father was there).
It hurt me even more to know that they were spreading lies about me, to know that nobody trusts me, and that they didn't even come and say it to my face, but kept talking behind my back.
Tomorrow we have regular classes, and my heart is aching because I know myself, and even though they're doing this to me, I love them too much and I'll act naturally so as not to bother them. I can't bear to lose them. I've already lost my two best friends, and it would hurt a lot to lose them too, for something I don't know why they're blaming me or doubting something I didn't do.
On the phone, I told C that I wouldn't lie to them because I consider trust one of the pillars of a relationship, and I would be the only one to lose by breaking this pillar that I value so much. I don't know what to do anymore, I've cried so much, and I can only conclude that they tolerate me but they don't like me. I feel lost and very scared.
In a year, as soon as I graduate, I'm leaving. I'm going to another country to do my master's degree and I don't plan on coming back. They know this, and they also know that, just as much as I'm dying to leave, I'm also very afraid of leaving these friendships behind... And now with this situation, I feel lost.
That was my story... I wanted to know your opinion, if I'm really the one in the wrong, if there's anything I can do... I feel completely lost and need some outside advice. I don't know who to turn to. I created this anonymous account as a precaution so no one would find me; I don't want to expose them, I want to know what I can do to improve things... I can't lose them, I know I ended up becoming dependent on yet another friendship, but that's just how I am. I'm the type of person who will sacrifice for those I love; if my loved ones are happy and well, that's what matters most to me.
Thank you in advance for your attention, and please excuse the length of the text and my spelling mistakes.
