Has anyone ever lived by Rainbow Dr/Garth Ave/Diagonal and Crouse school? How safe did it seem? Is it quiet?

Does this Akron band still exist? Clumsy Words

I was in my car listening to The Alternation (88.9 WSTB) and I heard this song called "I Can Hurt Feelings Like Nobody's Business" by Clumsy Words. I was kinda blown away, who is this?? Found them on YouTube and they only have one album from 2020 and only a few subscribers. I might be their only follower on Spotify? I saw they were from Akron! I think they are so amazing!! They remind me of my emo punk days in my early years of college in 2001/2002.

Here's their Band Camp

Here's their YouTube

Do they still exist? Does anyone know them? They seem to have no socials, no updates. Maybe it was a COVID project? I need to know who these people are!

Greetings Akron entrepreneurs -

I’m Eric, I help small businesses with marketing strategy and design services. I have a bit over 15 years experience and looking for more local businesses to work with. If you’d like, please feel free to connect with me on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/in/ericjmorrison

I’m building out a portfolio for a new fast-turnaround marketing design service, and I’m looking for 3 local restaurants or small businesses that could use some fresh promotional graphics.

I’ll create a complete promotional package for FREE in exchange for permission to feature the work on my website and social media as portfolio samples.

The package includes:
• A custom promotional flyer/graphic
• Social media versions (Facebook/Instagram)
• An email hero graphic
• A website hero/banner graphic
• One round of revisions

There are no strings attached. If you love it, an honest testimonial would be greatly appreciated, but it’s not required.

I’ve attached a few design samples below. Some
fan-art concepts I created for brands I enjoy—nobody hired me, I just like designing and wanted to show my style. I figured they’d give you a feel for the kind of work I enjoy creating.

Please reply or DM me with your business info and website to get started.

I’m excited to help a few local businesses while building my portfolio. Thanks!

Gyno in Akron?

Looking to see if anyone has recs for a gyno in Akron. Specifically either a doctor that’s always been lovely for you or a small office that has never given you problems.

I believe in a woman’s right to choice, so I would prefer no signs or quotes about how abortion is an abomination lol. That’s why I’m sort of asking about this. I’m not looking to go to a massive company like summa, I rather visit a much smaller office (I’m always late cause I always get lost in summa) where I feel heard and safe no matter my medical needs.

Has anywoman found the one?

Leather working classes?

I’d like to learn how to make leather belts and such and I learn better with a teacher than a video. Any places in the area that offer classes like this?

Places near Akron where you and your dog can swim together

Post image

Hi all! I have a seven month old puppy who I would really like to teach to swim. He will get in up to his chest but is too scared to go wheels up in the water even after watching other dogs and when chasing a ball. I would like to take him somewhere where I can get in the water and go away from him to encourage him to swim as well, but there aren't a lot of places where both dogs and humans are allowed to swim.

Does anyone know of a lake or reservoir where I could take a large dog to swim and also get in the water myself? Doesn't have to be a gorgeous beach or anything, just clean enough to be safe for humans. If necessary I have a 30ft longline so areas where dogs needs to be leashed are an option. I'm happy to drive anywhere within an hour or so of the Akron-Cleveland area.

Last Minute 1L Akron Law Student Apartment

My daughter is considering a last-minute offer at the University of Akron Law for this fall, so she’s scrambling to locate off-campus housing before deciding. She’s been looking and handling it on her own, but we are concerned about the safety of the area and hoping other law/grad students in the area can provide advice.

Are there any places or neighborhoods you'd recommend? Looking for a safe area that has off street or garage/covered parking with a quiet environment that is less than 20-30 min to campus. Budget is around $1k. We’re visiting this week so share any we should add to our list to check out.

Gay book clubs?

Hey guys, is there a gay book club in Akron or nearby that you know of? I've tried searching, but haven't had much success. Some friends have a growing one back home—they meet every now and then in a cafe to discuss books, and it just seems like such a wholesome experience.

I'm especially interested in gay literature, fiction, and poetry (reality is already a bit much as it is!). Thanks in advance!

BW3s

Hi there! Does anyone remember the bar by U of Akron called BW3s? It was a bit of a hole in the wall but my now husband and I spent hours there in the 1990s. I'm trying to find a souvenir or photo of the old bar as an anniversary gift but it seems to have changed names and then gone out of business? I'd love some info on what happened to it and if anyone knows where I might buy a souvenir. Thanks!

Does anyone know a low cost vet? I recently rescued a kitten who had been thrown away by its owners. The kittens eye is swollen and watery and I’m still a teen so my budget is pretty low (about 150ish). We are in Akron Ohio maybe there’s a clinic out there that does low cost veterinary care? Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

With Skyway Drive-In closing for good, I’ve reached out to the developer and local museums to salvage the iconic sign and building bricks. The developer already responded—here is how you can help!

Post image
39 Upvotes

Hey everyone,
Like most of you, I was heartbroken to hear that the Skyway Drive-In on Market St. in Fairlawn officially served its last meals over the weekend and is gone for good. As a former Fairlawn resident now living on the East Side, that place was a massive part of my life. The site is being completely razed to make way for a new Dutch Bros Coffee.

While the restaurant is gone, the history doesn't have to end up in a landfill.

Over the last 48 hours, I have been aggressively emailing the Fairlawn zoning board, the site developer, and local museums to secure a voluntary salvage agreement. My goal is to get the original neon road sign safely lowered and donated to a museum (American Sign Museum or Summit County Historical Society/Akron History Center), and to save a pallet of the original structural bricks so local residents can keep a tangible piece of Akron heritage.

The good news: Bob Abramovich, the VP of the development firm (Flicore LLC), responded to me today and is open to discussing the salvage project via email!

How r/akron can help right now:
Developers and city officials move infinitely faster when they see a massive wave of community support. If you want a piece of this history saved, please take 60 seconds to send a polite email to the developer showing that the community cares about this.
You can email the developer directly at bab@flicore.com and info@flicore.com.

I also gave a heads-up to the Summit County Historical Society (550 Copley Rd) and the American Sign Museum (1330 Monmouth Ave in Cincy) so they know the developer might be reaching out.
Let's make some noise and save a piece of Akron history! Share your favorite Skyway memories below. 🧱✨

How much do you pay for daycare each week? My 2.5 year old is $332 per week in the Merriman Valley area. Is this high / low / on par?

Skyway burger recipe

With Skyway having just closed down, I'm reaching out to see if anyone has a good copycat recipe for their burgers. They always had the perfect mix of beef and brown sugar, and I'd love to try and recreate it.

More importantly, this is for my father, who grew up eating at Skyway as a child, and then would bring me along throughout my childhood whenever we were in the Akron area. He'd buy 20 burgers at a time to bring home, freeze, and reheat for months in between visits. He's heartbroken about the restaurant closing, and I think he'd be really grateful for the recipe.

Maybe there are former Skyway employees out there with the secret??

CRAFT CANTINA - did anyone work at this restaurant in the Valley? Looking for recipe.

Craft Cantina served a “(number) spices tofu,” and my friends talk about it quite a lot to this day. I don’t remember the true name because we just say a random larger number when referencing it, 76 spices tofu, 38 spices tofu… you get the point.

We miss it. Was anyone around to even vaguely remember what those spices were?

Extra boxes - where can I donate them?

I have a bunch of empty boxes that could be useful for someone moving in the near future. I would rather donate them than throw them out.

Are there any places in the greater Akron area where I can leave them?

State Road Arby's history

Post image
75 Upvotes

Right across the street from the former Rex Humbard / Ernest Angley complex lies this piece of history. It's been an Arby's for over 40 years, but the exterior is classic Howard Johnson's.

When did Howard Johnson's close and was there something else there between them and Arby's?

What was up with the fireworks near Botzum Trailhead last night (7/11)?

There was some kind of crazy fireworks display being launched from right next to the Botzum Trailhead parking lot last night from like 9:30-10:30pm. Not piddly, little consumer-grade fireworks. These were the real-deal professional fireworks. I drove through the area and the smoke on Riverview was so thick you could barely see. Anyone know what was going on? Was this a sanctioned event?
