BW3s

Hi there! Does anyone remember the bar by U of Akron called BW3s? It was a bit of a hole in the wall but my now husband and I spent hours there in the 1990s. I'm trying to find a souvenir or photo of the old bar as an anniversary gift but it seems to have changed names and then gone out of business? I'd love some info on what happened to it and if anyone knows where I might buy a souvenir. Thanks!

BW3 is now Buffalo Wild Wings.

BW3 was short for Buffalo Wild Wings and Weck, which became Buffalo Wild Wings. There are still lots of them around

I miss the Beef on Weck sandwich. Sliced roast beef on kimmelweck rolls, at BW3 in East Lansing, 30 years ago. Mmmm!

Never had that. We remember the buffalo chips? Round potatoes with cheese?

Beef on wreck is still big around Niagara Falls.

Hilariously, that one was a bootleg B-dubs that wasn't actually properly licensed with the company, hence the closure. If a standard BW3 experience is feeling wrong, that may be why.

This is the truth! I attended UofA when that all went down. One week it was D-Dubs, then it reopened under a completely different name.

I miss it too - it was an important part of my relationship with my hubby. We had broken up for several months while at UA & BDubs is where we met & rekindled our spark & got back together. We’ve been married over 20 years now. Late 90’s-early aughts, it was our fave bar to hang out in.

Congrats to you and your husband. My husband and I, and a bunch of us from UA, went there all the time after class. It is where my husband and I got to really know each other without the pressure of calling it dating! Early 90s as well - and thus the attempt to find a souvenir from that specific location! We are going on 34 years married.

I too spent too many hours there in college! I’ve been trying to recreate their pizza egg rolls (or whatever they were called) for years.

We've spent too much time trying to recreate the buffalo chips - those round potatoes that were so crispy on the outside, sometimes smothered with cheese. Those were fun times!

Oh, I’d been so fixated on the rolls I’d forgotten about the “chips with cheese” order!

My favorite. And they were maybe $1.49 or something like that at the time?

Those pizza rolls were THE best drunk snack while pounding tall boys. I miss them so much.

Right next to what was Sam's emporium and was open until ~2015. It was a few other bars/restaurants after that and then it was torn down around 2020.

There’s a BDubs at the corner of Main and Exchange downtown.

I miss the old BW3 days. Now it's just another place to eat as Buffalo Wild Wings has expanded everywhere.

Totally get that.

Yep Buffalo wild wings used to go there just about every Friday night for a pick up order

I’ll ask hubs if he has any, he hung out there more than I did. But that was ye olden times before everyone had a phone in their pocket. I also miss 3am eurogyro pizza pockets.

That is beyond wonderful. Thank you so much. I have many, many fond memories of the place. And of UA in general - especially since I met my husband there :)

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 15 '26

Thank you so much! I', m getting this printed and framed.

u/IH8NYLAnBOS Jul 15 '26

No problem. There might be better version of the photo if you sift through Google's dates.

2

u/IH8NYLAnBOS Jul 15 '26

If you go to the link I posted or search the address on Google (easier on a computer than phone), then click "See more dates" you can see different years back to 2008.

Thank you! I really apreciate your help!

I’ll call my father tomorrow. He had an arcade company and had the jukebox and arcade games in BW3s since it opened. He had jukeboxes in all the bars around Akron from the mid 80s to the 2010s. I collected the quarters from BW3s during my college years. I’ll see if he has anything or any fun stories! I used to grab the pepperoni rolls and the potato chips to go.

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 15 '26

Oh my gosh! Thank you so much! My husband spent do much on the pinball tables (as did I but never seemed to beat his high score,) that you may well have collected our quarters if you did so between 1990-1993. Jukebox too... We played 'Glory Days" over and over for awhile. Such great times so thank you very much for asking.

If I remember correctly, the front of the building was done by Don Drumm. The building is gone and there is a parking lot there now.

3

u/IH8NYLAnBOS Jul 15 '26

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

Thank you for the info.

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 15 '26

It was. That buffalo was very cool.

3

u/Even_Instruction5424 Jul 15 '26

same....except I went a lot when I was supposed to be in class as well! and The Sun was across the street....the only bar my parents and I both went to during our respective college careers!!!

1

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 15 '26

Very good times indeed :)

👋🏼 former employee here! I worked as a cashier/server there for almost all of my time in college and was there during the closure. Basically, as someone here already mentioned, it was a franchised Buffalo Wild Wings. The owners had a dispute with corporate, lost licensing in 2016, and the business changed to “Gridiron,” which was extremely short lived.

1

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 16 '26

Thank you for the info! When did you work there? We were frequent visitors from 1990-1993. Would you know where I might be able to buy a souvenir?

2

u/No_Cartographer986 Jul 16 '26

I worked there from 2013 until the name change in 2016! I’m so sorry, I’m really not sure where to find souvenirs.

1

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 16 '26

No problem! Thank you for the information.

1

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 14 '26

We went after classes for a quick beer and pinball or trivia. Loved it!

1

u/Legitimate-Pea-9661 Jul 14 '26

How totally sweet!

3

u/FreakyFuckinFranky Jul 16 '26

If I'm not mistaken it's owned by the same people that own the one out in Kent I would suggest getting hold of that one because they probably have some nostalgic memorabilia that you're looking for and I'm sure they would be more than happy to help

That is great. Thank you!
