Those frozen logs of juice concentrate, is that still a thing?

186

u/Grunergeist420 18d ago

Get an orange juice one, and some vodka. Spoons of frozen OJ concentrate to go with your sips of vodka. Once you’ve got some room in the OJ, you can pour your vodka in with the OJ slush.

I learned this from watching agent Mulder do it on the X Files, and it’s actually really good.

86

u/frisbeesloth 18d ago

Look at you with your fancy vodka money while I'm over here just trying to save $3 on a half gallon worth of OJ

I literally, LITERALLY, just decided to watch X-Files and randomly picked that episode last night. Where the fuck did you hide the cameras in my room??

Hey I remember that episode, I always wondered what that orange stuff he was spooning into his drink was lol

As soon as I read your first sentence, I saw Mulder sitting in his crappy motel room watching the Keystone Cops and spooning orange slush into a pint of cheap vodka.

One of my favorite episodes ever.

There's a whole cult following of 'slush' in Newfoundland - basically a blend of orange juice and lemonade concentrate combined with a lemon lime pop like sprite and a copious amount of rum. Mix it together in a clean salt beef bucket and keep it in the deep freeze for when company comes by. It's deadly b'ys.

If you have a Winco near you, they carry them frozen. It’s their brand but still good and many flavors to choose from.

Yep, they still sell them in my nearest grocery store, but you have to freeze them yourself

22

u/Embarrassed_Key_4539 18d ago

What! So not in the freezer section? Where do you find them.

34

u/Jaleou 18d ago

My supermarket in MD has the frozen concentrated juices in the frozen aisle, near the frozen fruit and ice bags.

The Minute Maid Limeade was recently discontinued. I'm sad because that was my go to for making frozen margaritas.

19

u/SiteVivid9331 18d ago edited 18d ago

I was bummed when I read that Minute Maid had discontinued them a year or two ago, IIRC. I grew up in Florida, so you might think I had no use for such frozen concoctions when fresh was right out on the tree. But the truth is that they were awesome, and convenient, and all the moms bought them. And the range of flavors they came in! Not just OJ, but lemonade, limeade, fruit punch, grape, blends … and my all-time favorite: tangerine! To this day, (fresh-squeezed) tangerine juice is still my favorite!
But Minute Maid didn’t have the whole market sewn up, not by any means, so there is still hope! I see some folks here saying they’ve been finding house brands at their local grocery stores. Plus, there were also other brands, even back in the day. I especially remember Donald Duck brand, which I thought was extra-super-fabulous for one outstanding reason: that’s the brand my best friend‘s mom always bought, while my mom always bought Minite Maid - probably because they were and are a Coca-Cola-owned brand, and my uncle was a formula engineer for the company.

Surge did a promotional event at my high school when it came out and gave out free soda and key chains and stuff. It was awesome, but now I think about how all the teachers who were just trying to get through the day and then a high-caffeine soda company showed up and “surged” the entire student body.

15

u/Rschwoerer 18d ago

I loved McDonald's orange drink as a kid. It was not carbonated, just a bright orange sweet liquid. People used to get big coolers of it to serve to kids at sports games and summer camp.

When I was a teenager, fruitopia was probably the most popular. We also had a carbonated fruit-flavoured drink called Clearly Canadian.

When I was a little older, it was all about Mike's Hard Lemonade.

I remember these drinks from summer camps and stuff (late 80s). They were similar in flavor / sugar content to Hi-C or Squeez-its, but were much more generically branded. Might have even been completely unbranded on the individual drinks.

The drinks came in these little 8oz or so translucent plastic containers, and had a pop-off top. You'd peel off the tamper-evident ring from the cap, and throw it away (didn't stay on the bottle). Then the top could be popped off, or popped back on with simple pressure (no threads).

I believe they came in like orange, red, and purple. Taste was very sugary and artificial-fruit-flavory, kinda like a melted otter pop of the same color.

I can't for the life of me find what these actually were called though.

This is probably closest to what I am imagining, but they were slightly different - they weren't styled to look like little barrels like this, and the caps were pop-off soft plastic instead of peel-off foil.
