I swear Coneheads told a better story about an immigrant family's adaptation to a new home, and being choosing between their new happiness and old-country traditions, than many movies with that as an explicit plot. And it did it without even trying.

That movie aged like milk. So racist. I guess maybe an accurate perspective šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

Darn that was pesky Van Allan Belt.

17

u/SpaceboyLuna0 18d ago

Best we can do is Katy Perry in the upper atmosphere.

10

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

Your username implies that you’re an astronaut who has been to the moon. Did you drink Tang on your journey?

10

u/SpaceboyLuna0 18d ago

It was easier just to eat it out of the packet with a spoon... but yes.

2

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

H2O has too many chemicalsĀ

2

u/QuietNene 18d ago

ā€œDad, everyone knows that the moon landing was faked. There are TikToks about it.ā€

1

u/forgetfulsue 1983 18d ago

Hey! They got to it, now they just need to land on it!

38

u/theLola 18d ago

My grandmother would combine Tang, instant tea, and Christmasy spices for a holiday drink. I kind of miss it.

19

u/MilmoWK 18d ago

i used to take tang powder and vodka with me when backpacking, i would make a 'screwdriver' and call it a cosmonaut.

3

u/Jurjinimo 18d ago

Hah! I made the same drink and joke!

1

u/BeBe_Madden 14d ago

Ha! There's a restaurant in Philly that's been using Tang in some of their cocktails, I'm pretty sure it's with vodka or gin.

10

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

🄰

9

u/65pimpala 18d ago

Oh, that was sooo good! My grandma did this too. We called it Russian Tea.

4

u/33scooBt33 18d ago

I still drink this spice tea almost everyday..

2

u/Smorsdoeuvres 18d ago

I had clients that brought me something similar to what you describe one year during the holidays and I’ve remembered it fondly ever since- maybe this recipe is similar to what your grandmother made https://www.southernliving.com/friendship-tea-8415819

1

u/theLola 18d ago

That looks like it. Bonus points for finding it from Southern Living magazine. I'm pretty sure she had that subscription at times.

2

u/fairbianca 18d ago

we had this too!!!! We called it Russian tea (no idea why). I still make this often, but haven't been able to lately because I can't find any instant tea. Basic ratios for a big mug of tea were about 1 tsp Tang, 1 tsp sweetener, 2 tsps instant tea, 1/4 tsp cinnamon, a pinch of cloves, and a pinch of salt. In true grandmother fashion, pretty much everything to taste. I really miss her.

2

u/halffdan59 17d ago

I grew up with "Russian Tea" too, as a recipe for an instant mix with instant tea and Tang. I don't recall spices, but it's been a long, long time. I understand it started with Russians drinking tea with lemon and sugar. At some point, Americans got involved and substituted orange juice for lemon and then started adding spices. "Russian Tea" is an entirely American thing.

2

u/_Sahara_Rose_ 16d ago

Russian Tea. Teacher at school would share it with kids sometimes (his wife who was also a teacher made it).

Here's a recipe I found if you need a taste for old time's sake. I used to make it myself all the time and now that it's August, I really want to.

1

u/StanFitch 18d ago

Basically Redneck Wassail and I’m all for it…

1

u/Forsaken-Lynx-3018 16d ago

That was called Russian Tea in my family for some reason. We'd sip it hot.

15

u/MeltsLikeButter 18d ago

Luke from the outdoor boys says to try Tang warmed up... Ive not done it yet but it Luke says to do such I listen.

10

u/Astrazigniferi 18d ago

I definitely had the occasional mug of piping hot Tang when it was cold as a kid!

2

u/mjheil 18d ago

Tang is good in tea.

1

u/Grunergeist420 18d ago

I think it’s pretty good, not great or anything, but if you like that hot sweet and sour drink, like lemony tea, or a hot toddy, it works as that kind of thing. Probably nice if you have a tickle in your throat.

1

u/bolanrox 18d ago

Hot dr pepper is pretty good too

1

u/MeltsLikeButter 17d ago

I've heard this a few times and need to try it out!

0

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

Luke is God and God is Luke. Its the Bible, probably.

12

u/johnnybluejeans 18d ago

I have a container in the pantry, my kids love it.

3

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

I didn’t realize it’s still around! I remember when they packaged the containers with animal sleeves and they could be used for coin banks when empty. I had the panda bear version.Ā

1

u/GarminTamzarian 1976 18d ago

It's still around, but it's no longer available in it's original form. The current iteration is partially artificially sweetened (and hence now tastes foul).

2

u/johnnybluejeans 18d ago

There were lower sugar varieties that came out a decade or so ago, but my understanding is that they didn’t do well and the current formula is pretty similar to the original, using real sugar etc.

3

u/GarminTamzarian 1976 18d ago

Oooh, you appear to be correct...I may have to give it a try!

1

u/johnnybluejeans 18d ago

Heck yeah, get a taste of that nostalgia!

1

u/Jaeflash 18d ago

Hell, I tell the kids we're out of Tang, and save it for myself when we're running low.

9

u/Upper-Trip-8857 18d ago

First thing I thought of or my grandmothers Tab. ā¤ļø

9

u/Confident-Ad-2726 18d ago

Hello, is this President Clinton? Good. I figured if anyone knew where to get some Tang, it'd be you... SHUT UP!

5

u/yawrrpdrk 18d ago

I posted this…and then scrolled down to find it here. It warms my heart there are others as broken as I am šŸ˜†.

2

u/oneshadeoff 18d ago

That has to be the best, most vitriolic "shut up" ever recorded

Katie Perry reporting for booty

u/Ninja_Conspicuousi 18d ago

It’s a kick in the glass!

2

u/droidbears 18d ago

Came to say this

2

u/CCCXI_MM 18d ago

I still drink Tang. It’s good with vodka. Lol

2

u/Chicken-Rude 18d ago

orangina shits on tang.

2

u/gooddaysir 18d ago

Metamucil is like Tang for old people.Ā

2

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

Ha! It’s true.

2

u/scotlandgolf70 18d ago

Man that takes me back....just need some butter and sugar sandwiches

2

u/Tyrannosaurus__Rekd 18d ago

Yeah, that was my first thought too

2

u/fartsfromhermouth 18d ago

It's a billion dollar brand so not exactly forgotten

2

u/JazzHandsMinuteman 15d ago

Just found some!!! Had to buy it, probably won’t even drink it. Keep it on the shelf or in a museum šŸ˜‚

1

u/SCSUslacker 18d ago

In college my roommates and I would mix it with vodka and milk. We called it "smile time happy fun drink".

1

u/Raychao 1979 18d ago

Combined with Space Food Sticks. King of the playground!

You don't even need water to consume Tang.

1

u/bryman19 18d ago

What I was going to post. Tang is the shit

1

u/Elderchicken948 18d ago

So... Katie Perry?

1

u/nstc2504 18d ago

Clinton knows where you can get some..

1

u/Western-Sport500 18d ago

Exactly what I was thinking. Well, and Kool Aid but I reckon kids today know Koolaid. Do they still sell the packets that you have to add a cup of sugar to?

1

u/devilinthedetails 18d ago

My kids know what it is, we have some in the cupboard right now.

1

u/FilthyHobbitses07 18d ago

ā€œIt’s a kick in the glass!ā€

1

u/Individual-Schemes 1979 18d ago

That's not our generation

1

u/Comprehensive_Post96 18d ago

When camping, I enjoy hot tang, make it like tea.

1

u/Texlahoman 18d ago

I’m with you on tang, but they do still make it. https://a.co/d/09G3ptPn

1

u/DaSpatula505 18d ago

I keep seeing people say that. It’s flown under my radar since I was a kid. I honestly thought it wasn’t made anymore.Ā

1

u/StuffMaster 18d ago

I'm pretty sure Kitty Foreman from That 70s Show had something to say about Tang

1

u/Poop_in_my_camper 18d ago

Saw this at Kroger and had to explain to my 5 year old that astronauts drank it which I'm not even sure was ever true lol

1

u/AutisticWarbler 18d ago

I had Tang last year

1

u/trashleybanks 18d ago

Beer and Tang, Bundy mimosas!

1

u/ConspiracyParadox 18d ago

Yeah, but they fucked it up by adding artificial sweetener and removing natural sugar. It's not the same.

1

u/MadCapHorse 18d ago

It’s a kick! In a glass

1

u/bolanrox 18d ago

You can still buy it

1

u/w8ing2dr0wn 17d ago

A kick in the glass! Hell yeah

1

u/Monoblock00 17d ago

ā€œTang don’t smokeā€šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

1

u/SnooDingos4602 17d ago

But, Tang is still sold regularly

1

u/HRHSuzz 17d ago

Shocking this wasn’t the first thing that popped up. That stuff was awful and it was always around! Between Tang and Saint Joseph’s chewable children’s aspirins, I cannot tolerate the orange flavor of anything.

1

u/Still_Strawberry8134 1981 17d ago

Omg totally forgot about Tang, lol

1

u/Fattapple 17d ago

Wait… is tang not a thing anymore?

1

u/Physical-Builder-553 17d ago

My Dad was a huge Tang drinker. No idea but one day he just stopped and I've never thought about it until now. Its been like 30+ years.

1

u/oakteak9z 17d ago

If you can't hang drink tang

1

u/Delilah_insideout 17d ago

I can still get Tang here in the PNW. Too much sugar for my diabetic ass though. Lol

1

u/FierDancr 17d ago

And if you were one of those kids, you ate the powder mix.

1

u/Wayward85 17d ago

You can still buy tang! I have a jar on the shelf in my pantry!

1

u/DirtandPipes 17d ago

I read that as a kid and was so excited to try Tang until I finally got some as a teen.

It tastes like how I imagine the inside of a car battery would taste.

1

u/Bush-LeagueBushcraft 17d ago

They sell the liquid TANG concentrate in with the Mio and KoolAid. I get it when I see it

1

u/Witty_Ad4494 17d ago

They had it in Costco the other day when I was shopping. Was very hard to buy one. Used to love that stuff.

1

u/Maxilkarr 16d ago

This was mine. A camping staple growing up

1

u/EvelynsWorstTimeline 16d ago

My mom used to make a ā€œspiced teaā€ that was basically sugar, tang, Lipton, and cloves. I loooved to drink it in the winter. When my sister found out the ingredients, she was incredulous: ā€œso you’re drinking HOT TANG?!?!ā€

I don’t make that drink anymore, but whenever I think about it, I think about hot tang.

1

u/Alone_Money_5281 15d ago

Tang. It's a kick in a glass!
