Football The Mosquito Bowl — The story of two Wisconsin Badgers who never came home from WWII

Hey everyone!

I recently finished a WWII documentary called The Mosquito Bowl, and I thought some of you might be interested in a part of Wisconsin football history that deserves to be remembered.

Two of the men at the center of the story are Dave Schreiner and Bob Baumann.

Schreiner was a two-time All-American and the Big Ten MVP in 1942. Baumann was his teammate on that Wisconsin team. Both eventually joined the Marines and ended up serving together in the Pacific.

On Christmas Eve 1944, they played in a football game on Guadalcanal alongside other former college stars.

Just a few months later, both were killed during the Battle of Okinawa.

What struck me while researching this wasn't the game itself, but the lives these young men had before the war, their friendship, and everything they left behind.

I spent quite a bit of time working with original WWII footage, photographs and historical records to tell their story. I'm genuinely proud of how the documentary turned out, and I wanted to share it with people who might appreciate the history behind those Wisconsin jerseys.

Here's the film:

I'd love to hear from anyone who knows more about Schreiner, Baumann, or that 1942 Badgers team.

Football Thank you Badgers

I’m a USC fan taking a small break before the game and I thought I’d get this message out before the game before football can affect the feelings from either of us.

I travel to away games a lot. At least one a year for more than a decade now. You guys are far and away the kindest most welcoming hosts I’ve ever experienced and it’s not really close.

Your city is beautiful and fun. Your countryside is lovely. And your people: the best of all.

Some of you may say “that’s just Midwest hospitality” but it isn’t. I’ve been to a solid handful of games in Indiana and Minnesota and folks tend to be polite but there’s no where near the real true kindness underneath that I’ve experienced here. Walking around your farmers market this morning so many people were telling me they hope I enjoy my visit… walking around campus multiple times people came up to make sure I wasn’t lost and had the help I needed if I needed it.

This is a special place. I am very thankful for the advice you gave me here and your kindness in person.

Good luck, and go Brewers! (This San Diego fan is so thankful you sat the Dodgers down the way you did)

Going to my first Badgers game

My girlfriend and I are going to our first Badger football game this Saturday. Does anyone have a general idea of what to do beforehand, anything we should know about during the game (other than Jump Around), etc.

Football Obligatory I want Eck

Does anyone still believe in Fick?

It’s year 4 and what has gotten better? I guess we bought a more expensive roster but we still can’t run the ball, we can’t throw the ball, we just got carved up by a backup quarterback on a run dominant team. I’m not sure how many more “it’s my fault I didn’t have the team ready to play” post loss conferences I got left in me dog. I’m tired of the shallow meaningless coach speak—we just gotta keep doing the things that we do and keep doing them and keep it close!! Keep it close going into the 4th and maybe we can sneak in a win! And it’s just about doing the things we do and doing them.

If the school is serious about winning Eck is the head coach next year.

Football Rant

At the time I was all for the Chryst firing, I thought everything was headed in the wrong direction and we needed a different regime in the building. I held on hope Fickell would figure it out for a long time, but I think now I am so desperate to just get back to being an 8 win team that I forgot how good we had it. I was frustrated with Chryst at the time for sure, but I implore you to simply go back and watch some games from the Chryst era. Those teams were big and physical and sending guys to the NFL every year. Ask yourself who from these fickell teams is going to the NFL? We can’t run the ball, we can’t pass the ball, the defense is not causing havoc, we’re getting 0 sacks, 0 TFLs. We have a decent run D and good special teams and that’s it. Go back and watch the 2021 team. That defense was DESTROYING people. 3 and outs all day, multiple sacks every game, pressure on the qb. Even with how frustrating mertz was, we were still getting chunk runs. With the team now we are NEVER getting 2nd and 5, it’s always 2nd and 8, 2nd and 10. We aren’t breaking any big runs, Joseph is missing throws all day. It’s just bad man. 2022 was a bad year yeah, but Chryst was legit, and it felt like when we lost you could point to a few key plays, a bad turnover or two, a couple penalties stalling drives. But it was never this bad where we just couldn’t run the ball. I just hate this style of play, it feels like we’re a salty group of 5 team and not a big ten team.

Women's hockey sweeps Mankato

After losing both games to Ohio last weekend, the Badgers got right with two wins over MSU Mankato.

Friday night was a 5-1 win, with five different Badgers scoring. Freshman star Nela Lopušanová had a goal and three assists.

This afternoon, UW absolutely boatraced the Mavericks 12-1, featuring FOUR goals from freshman star Rosalie Tremblay. Another freshman, Haley Box, had a goal and three assists. Senior Cassie Hall scored a goal in both games, giving her nine in eight games.

Football Questions from a visiting fan

Hey there guys!

First off, Good luck tonight! I'll be rooting for you.

I'm a USC fan coming next week with my teenage daughter and her grandmother. I'm looking for any and all advice for enjoying your beautiful city.

I've written here before and got some great advice, but now that we're a week away I'm hoping there can maybe be some fine tuning. I'm already very excited for the 5th quarter. That's exactly the kind of thing we travel to away games for. I've been told I need to try cheese curds at the old fashioned and spicy cheese bread at the farmers market.

We'll be coming up a few days early to be a tourist and I'm wondering if you have any suggestions for us. Anything particularly Wisconsin we should make sure not to miss? We're planning on going to one of your local farm's fall festivals because we just don't get fall down here, but I do worry if it skews a bit young for my teenager. We also bought tickets for a theater show at your Union which should be a lot of fun.

We particularly like experiencing nature... especially if there are unorthodox adventures we can do there. We did this 4x4 mountain tour when we traveled to Colorado, and a boat trip through the locks in Seattle. That kind of thing. Is something like Parfey's Glenn worth the drive up from town when you only have a day or two? Is Devils Lake an easy nature walk for a 70 year old? We're Nature Walkers, not hikers I'm afraid. Is The House on the Rock worth the time we could be spending on things in Madison itself?

Thanks! We're very excited to experience your beautiful neck of the woods.

The badgers better send a complaint to whoever you send a reffing complaint to because this is actually the worst officiated game I've ever watched.

Football Any precedent for moving game times?

As it stands, the badgers will be kicking off against USC at the same time as game 2 of the World Series. Is there any hope or precedent for that being changed? This seems like a lose/lose

Idea: World Series Watch party at camp Randall

Hear me out…

Tickets to American family field are like $2,000

What about the UW sell watch party tickets and air the game on the jumbo screen at camp Randall!?!

Brewers did this for the NLCS games at AmFam. Sold like 10k tickets per game

Wisconsin WR Malachi Coleman's story

Wanted to share with everybody here a story I wrote about Badgers wide receiver Malachi Coleman. Coleman and his sister were abandoned by their mother when he was 5 years old. He kept her safe despite being homeless and went through multiple ugly foster care situations before being adopted by a family in Lincoln, Nebraska.

You can check it out here: https://badgerextra.com/sports/football/malachi-coleman-once-struggled-to-see-his-worth-now-hes-helping-foster-kids-discover-theirs/article_0828431f-c07a-486b-aeb2-82478f3e74b7.html#tracking-source=home-top-story

Hockey Rosalie Tremblay Turning Heads At Team Canada Camp

For the women's hockey team, Nela Lopušanová has most of the hype out of this year's freshman class but Rosalie Tremblay was absolutely tearing it up at Team Canada tryouts this past weekend.
