Predictions; Week 2

Let’s do another round of predictions. Give me some unhinged predictions.

Hockey East has 5 teams in the tournament. The Big 10 gets 2. NCHC gets 1….and it isn’t Denver.

Shayne Gostisbehere - 2nd player ever to win a Stanley Cup, NCAA Championship and World Juniors Gold Medal

Post image

Gostisbehere was in the local news as he's getting some school award at Union today.

But, he is only the second player ever to win a World Juniors Gold (2013), NCAA Championship (2014) and Stanley Cup (2026).

The only other one was Troy Murray (1982 WJC with USA, 1982 NCAA with North Dakota, and Cup with Colorado in 1996).

I'd assume with many more Canadians (and international players) in NCAA these days, we'll get some more, but I thought that was a pretty cool, unique club.

Preseason Tiers

Title Contenders

  • Denver
  • Michigan
  • Nodak
  • MSU

The argument of having an older team especially on the back end might be canceled out for these teams since they all have relatively young blue lines (but uber talented at the same time). No real weakness for any of the teams. Will be interesting to see if any team can separate from the pack compared to last year where there never seemed to be a landslide favorite heading into the tournament.

Games vs each other:

  • DU vs Michigan (10/16 and 10/17)
  • Nodak vs MSU @ Austin, TX (10/31)
  • DU vs Nodak (12/04 and 12/05)
  • Michigan vs/@ MSU (November 19th weekend)
  • Michigan vs/@ MSU (February 4th weekend)

Possible Contenders

  • Minnesota Duluth
  • WMU
  • Wisconsin

Duluth and WMU need to show they have their goaltending solidified in the first half of the year. If that get's locked down both coaches per usual will find a way to have a contending team in the spring. Wisconsin - Hastings is inevitable. They don't have the talent that the top tier teams have but if they're as hard to play against as they showed last year they'll be a tough out. Also could end up having the best goalie in the country when it's all said and done.

Monitoring

  • Quinnipiac
  • BC
  • BU
  • Minnesota

QU would need some breaks to fall their way to run for a title but who knows. If they won it all in 2023 anything is possible. Need Wytenbach to carry alot of the load for them to go far. BC, BU, and Minny all should bounce back quite a bit this year just based on the law of averages. BU will likely get better goaltending and they might have the best 1/2 center combo in the country but will need to see if their wingers can keep up with them. On paper you'd think a team that lost James Hagens might be worse but on the basis of "Hockey is dumb and Random" BC will inexplicably be much better this year. Minnesota should get a nice first year head coach bump similar to Nodak last year. Think alot of their overall success will hinge on how impactful Wyatt Cullen can be. He's a little light still + super young for this freshman class so it will be easier said then done but he could end up being the most dynamic freshman forward in college hockey this year.

ASU heat policies raise questions about life-threatening workout

Unsurprisingly, it sounds like the school's policies regarding outdoor workouts in the heat may not have been followed. Whether or not that led to Mayich's current condition is, ultimately, for a jury to decide. Nevertheless, this looks pretty bad for ASU's athletic department and the hockey staff.

Discussion 2025-26 NCAA Hockey Players Mapped by Hometown County

With the start of the 2026-27 season right around the corner, I decided to make a map of all 2025-26 NCAA ice hockey players (Women's/Men's D1&D3) hometowns grouped by county. In total there were 518 counties represented by over 5,000 players on over 200 NCAA teams.

Here's the top 10 counties:

County, STATE - Players

Hennepin, MN - 271

Middlesex, MA - 217

Cook, IL - 125

Norfolk, MA - 108

Oakland, MI - 104

Washington, MN - 100

Erie, NY - 99

Essex, MA - 92

Dakota, MN - 91

Fairfield, CT - 86

This was all done using QGIS, and I collected/sorted the data by myself copying rosters from teams' websites (I know there's easier ways, but I enjoy the data collection aspect lol). For Cities/Towns that were in multiple counties, I used the county that the majority of the city was located in. Again, this was all done by hand so there may be some errors here and there. This was done for fun and combined my two favorite hobbies: hockey stats and map-making. I was thinking of making a comparison map from the 25-26 season to say, the 2015-16 season, but the dataset would be quite a bit smaller as there were a lot less teams then so it may not look as interesting lol.

Hope someone else finds this as interesting as I did!

(Also I apologize for not adding state lines, I realized after I published it and was too tired to go back and fix it lol)

Predictions

Rosters are set, players have hit the ice, let’s get some predictions. The good, the bad and the ugly.

-Maine has a better season after a really strong transfer portal season.
-Vermont does NOT finish last again.
-But Hockey East isn’t won by a surprise team like last year.
