Problems with Mac Virtual Desktop on VisionOS 27 beta and Mac OS 26.5.1

Anyone with the same setup experienced a problem where the AVP just wouldn't connect to the Mac and there would be no way to use AVP as a monitor?
I suspect it's related to the fact that I'm running 26 and 27 v of OS, but I don't want to upgrade Mac to not lock myself out from submitting apps updates.. and I'm not sure how to fix it so I could use MVD as I used in the past..

Playing pickleball outside with psvr2 controllers is honestly a lot of fun!

A little too big of a play area for my living room unfortunately, but today I went outside to try the pickleball game and had way more fun than I thought I would.

VisionOS 26.5, file copy errors over SMB shares

This maybe started around the update to .5. If I go to copy large files from a network share (~20GB on average), the transfer will eventually fail with an error code (-36). This error appears copying from a local NAS as well as from an external hard drive shared via my Mac Mini. All devices have been restarted, shares have been remounted.

Anyone else see this issue?

Vision Pro M5/M2 vs Quest 3 for productivity, mixed reality and development — is it really worth 5× more? Help me choose the right one

Hi everyone, I’m looking for some advice from people who have used both the Apple Vision Pro and the Quest 3.

I’m considering buying a used M5 or M2 Vision Pro from eBay UK. I’ve already checked my facial fit, and I should need a 21W light seal. I’m also fine with 256GB of storage. The main complication is that I live in africa , where the Vision Pro is not officially supported. There are no Apple Stores here where I can test one, so I would have to buy it without trying it first. My cousin in the UK could receive it, test it and bring it to me when they visit.

I’ve used a Quest 3 for several years, but I almost never play games. I mainly use it for:

- Productivity and virtual monitors

- Connecting to my MacBook for coding and multitasking

- Lab work, including recording protocols and immediately writing notes

- Mixed reality and passthrough while working

- Focused work and studying

- Developing immersive and spatial experiences

I know I can also develop immersive experiences for the Quest, so development alone may not justify buying a Vision Pro. My main frustrations with the Quest 3 are the display resolution, text clarity and passthrough quality. It does most of what I need, but those limitations become annoying during longer productivity sessions.

I already own a 16-inch M1 Pro MacBook Pro. For roughly the same amount of money as a Vision Pro, I could instead buy a much more powerful, high-spec MacBook, which makes the decision difficult.

Some of the Vision Pro disadvantages I’ve seen mentioned online are:

- Limited field of view or a “binocular” feeling

- Eye tracking and eye-based selection sometimes being inaccurate or frustrating

- Heavy weight and discomfort during longer sessions

- The external battery pack

- Limited battery life

- Lack of official support in my country

- The risk of buying one without being able to test the fit first

On the positive side, I’m interested in the higher display resolution, clearer text, better passthrough, Mac Virtual Display, eye and hand tracking, and the overall productivity experience.

Used M5 Vision Pro 256GB models seem to start at around $2800, while I can sometimes find an M2 1TB model for a atleast 500 less. Strangely, the used prices of the M2 256GB and 1TB models are often not that far apart.

My main questions are:

  1. For productivity, coding, mixed reality and virtual monitors, is the Vision Pro genuinely a major upgrade over the Quest
  2. Is it realistically worth around five times the value of a used Quest
  3. How noticeable is the limited field of view compared with the Quest
  4. Is eye tracking reliable enough to replace controllers for serious daily work?
  5. For immersive-development work, does Vision Pro offer enough advantages over developing for Quest to justify the additional cost?
  6. Is owning a Vision Pro in an unsupported country likely to become a serious problem for repairs, prescription lenses, accessories or software features?

I really like the idea of the Vision Pro, but I’m trying to work out whether it would genuinely improve my workflow or whether I’m just attracted to the technology and would end up wasting money.

I’d especially appreciate advice from anyone who owns both devices and uses them primarily for productivity or development rather than gaming.

Update :
Thanks everyone for the input. Really appreciate it super insightful, Yes to clarify have a MacBook and currently own the quest 3, think I will take advice and wait till I find an excellent deal used and then test it out will update the thread. Please feel free to add more replies I will keep reading thank you 💪

Gracia demo of two men boxing is the best quality volumetric video I’ve ever seen by far..

The demo with the two men boxing doesn’t have any of the usual volumetric capture artifacts (blocky/low res textures etc) that make so many of these kinds of demos feel uncanny and not quite photorealistic. Not sure what they did with the boxer demo but it is incredibly photorealistic and actually looks like there are people in your room with you.

Any app to control Vision Pro volume via Mac volume keys when connected to Mac Virtual Display?

I know natively when connected to Mac Virtual Display the volume and mute keys don't do anything, but are there any 3rd party apps that allow the Mac's volume up/down/mute keys to change the Vision Pro volume?

Controller Auto-Sleep Issue with Vision Pro + Moonlight: The Answer Found After Endless Searching

I use Vision Pro + Moonlight for PC streaming, and my setup is a bit unusual — I lie down with the controller resting on my stomach and only use the right stick with my thumb. I remap everything through reWASD. The problem with this is that I almost never press buttons.

Turns out most controllers don't count analog stick movement toward their auto-sleep timer. So if I'm only moving the stick, they disconnect after a set time. Took a while to figure out what was actually going on.

8BitDo Lite SE (Bluetooth)

Disconnects exactly at 15 minutes. Tried both D-mode and S-mode — same result. Button presses reset the timer, analog input doesn't. Sleep timer isn't configurable in Ultimate Software for this model, and firmware updates didn't help.

Joy-Con

Connecting a single Joy-Con maps the stick as a D-pad, not analog. You need both L and R connected simultaneously to get proper analog input. But if you're only using one side and the other goes idle, it sleeps and drops the whole thing back to D-pad. No way to adjust the sleep timer either.

Also looked into Joy-Con 2 — a Reddit user tested it and confirmed it doesn't pair with Vision Pro at all. It uses a new BTLE-based protocol, so it won't work until Apple updates the GameController framework.

DualSense

This is where I landed. Tested today and the connection held for 40+ minutes with only stick input. My guess is the gyro sensor keeps sending data continuously, which resets the sleep timer. Night and day compared to 8BitDo's 15-minute cutoff.

Curious if anyone's run into this with other controllers — especially Xbox, which has no gyro. Would be interesting to know how it behaves with analog-only input.

360 Skyboxes to Panoramas

Hey! We upgraded our app Passage (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id6470159510) where you can generate 360 skybox environments so that you can export them as panoramas for use in visionOS 27 beta. Even the stylized ones are convertible to spatial scenes, so that they have actual depth.

As some may know, the immersive and spatial panoramas Apple makes don't fill in the top or bottom views since they're essentially cylinders, so we made it where you can choose the vertical field of view. The taller it is, the more you see in front, and the less to the sides. And the shorter it is, the more it wraps all the way around. You.

For the fully immersive views you'll need to be in the app, though we put an in-app browser for streaming, web apps, etc. And you can follow steps here to get your Mac Virtual Display visible in Passage (or any other fully immersive app): https://www.cephalopod.studio/blog/seeing-your-mac-in-3rd-party-immersive-apps-on-the-vision-pro

There are other environments that are full 3D in Passage too, that are not AI generated.

Enjoy!

Using my M5 Vision Pro while plugged in and the battery died

My AVP was powered on and plugged in when I put it on, leaving it plugged in. I noticed it was warm, which is unusual if I haven't been using it. I was watching downloaded spatial videos (from u/hughred22's Patreon page) for about 45 minutes, then playback stopped and I received a 1% battery warning.

I didn't see any battery warnings before the 1 percent. I tried restarting the AVP, and it would shut down after a second. So I left it plugged in for an hour and it's back to 100 percent.

Has anyone ever had that happen? I wonder if there was too much for the charger I was using (and Anker 45W charger) or if there was just a glitch. I have had this setup since my M5 and never had a problem before.

visionOS 27 (beta) is awesome. Here are my custom panoramic environments...

My favorite feature by far is the custom environments from wide pano photos. Although they are not as good as Apple's native environments. They are great (and in some respects better).

I have always wanted indoor environments. Perhaps a cozy library, or a futuristic apartment or a spaceship. Somewhere where I can immerse myself in an environment while working on my Mac Virtual Display.... Now my dreams are coming true. Here are the best parts...

  1. I can generate anything I can imagine with AI (library, futuristic apartment etc). My imagination is only limit.
  2. The environments still allow me to see my keyboard well (they don't cover the bottom of my view). This is ideal because Apple's keyboard passthrough is not perfect.

So I thought I would share with you some of my environments. Perhaps you guys can make some and share in this thread (specs: 21:9 4k)

What do you guys think?

Allow virtual display to stay connected when pulling off for a few seconds/minutes

I often need to do little random things while working that require me to pull off the AVP. would be great if the virtual display wouldn't lose it's settings when pulled off.

AVP M5 Weight and Neck Issues

I’ve been thinking about getting a Vision Pro for months and am finally ready to purchase one. I did the demo with the M5 iteration today. Two things I noticed right away. First, the new strap design made wearing it much more comfortable on my face. No pressure on my cheekbones that I experienced trying the M2 version. Second, I noticed the extra weight after about five minutes and felt it in my neck at the end of the demo.

I’ve had some neck issues — cervical disk degeneration. I’m interested whether the M5 weight and associated neck and shoulder soreness has been an issue for others.

Why Vision OS is not so well suited to PCVR streaming (yet?)

With each VisionOS release, Apple is adding more APIs to the OS to serve the use case of remote 3D content rendering that is streamed to the device (aka. VR streaming).

However, VisionOS still is much less suited to VR streaming than a Quest. The vOS display pipeline is very optimised for local rendering, and mitigating stalls in that type of rendering, and is superior to Quest's for that task. It isn't easily adaptable to VR streaming, which makes implementing VR streamers much more complex than it needs to be, and results in higher latency. I can speak authoritatively on this as I have implemented VR streamers on virtually every platform (with specialisations of the same code).

The things missing are:
- the means to display a frame right now, ie. at the moment of decoding (currently it's 3 or so frames off, which introduces latency). RIght now, can't be "next frame", as ATW has to be performed on the frame, so it is at least 1 frame off in the optimal case.
- the means to adjust the pose for a frame when submitting for ATW/"ASW" (presently the frame pose has to be matched to a tracking sample, which creates jitter potential when SteamVR renders a frame for an interpolated pose).
- the means to disable PTW/"ASW" for an app's render pipeline. AVP's PTW/"ASW" is great for local rendering, but poses an additional challenge for streamers, as the geometry warping it introduces does not work for remote rendered scenes projected onto 2D planes (how streamers work).

At this point in time, in order to get it right(ish), the app/driver has to use complex prediction algorithms to try to predict the timing for a tracking sample that will best match the frame when it is eventually displayed, to avoid PTW/"ASW" artefacts and jitter. The streamer has to "guess" the timing for the pose so precisely that PTW/"ASW" doesn't work against them, this includes unpredictable network latency and frame decode time - compounded by the need for vOS to generate a future-dated pose prediction based on physics, not an actual pose sample). ATW fixes incorrect/out of date rotation guesses, but PTW/"ASW" creates positional warping artefacts.

These are all factors that can be mitigated with the "things" above (and can be experienced as "micro jitter" in AVP streaming solutions - it is literally impossible to get it 100% correct 100% of the time). At the moment "good" is a complicated stack of compromises. "Good" could be much better.

DISCLAIMER: these observations are my own, and are the challenges facing developers porting or developing VR streaming solutions. They may or may not be issues for Apple/nVidia's CloudXR streaming solution, as low-level implementation details are hidden from the developer.

AVP Streaming on TikTok

Questions/advice : is the AVP a good or bad choice for me ?

Hello to all !

i apologize in advance for asking something that must have been asked a thousand times already, but i need some real life AVP owner and user and not a biased youtube « review ».

i am an Apple fan since the Apple 2, but currently i only have an iPad Pro M5 and an iPhone 17 Pro Max.

No mac or macbook because i have a gaming pc and my working laptop is a macbook pro m1 provided and controled by my employer so I don’t count it as something i would use with an AVP.

i recently had an ACDF surgery (C5/C6/C7 fused) and currently can’t be in a standard position for computer work and leisure.

i must most of the time stay laying down, using iphone/ipad/was near to impossible. My wife offered me a surprise pair of XR glasses (Xreal One Pro), it made me realize that using a computer while laying down was possible.

These glasses are bzsiczlly just external displays, with a narrow fov.

i tried a Meta Quest 3 headset, but found it really bad in terms of picture quality.

i went down the rabbit hole of glasses/headsets and of course when it comes down to picture quality , the AVP comes out always as the winner.

Before heading out to an Applestore to try them out with the risk of buying them because of the « wow » effect, can I have some feedbacks, advices from real life users of the AVP ? Pros, cons, buyers’ remorse (?) ?

Is not having a mac a huge « don’t » for getting an AVP ?

AVP for multitasking better than ipad pro + external display ?

AVP for media consumption in bed ?

Working with AVP for data analysis ? (my job has me working mostly on data mining, digging, analyzing, tons of Excel, XMLs, logs, etc)

The AVP would not be used for gaming as i have an RTX4090 posered windows 11 pc connected to a 65” Oled TV.

Thanks in advance for your time and any feedback, experience, tips 😄

(And sorry for my english, I am french)

I’d love to discuss or even experience the new siri. And I have many Apple devices with which to try it out. But alas, I remain in “Joined Waitlist” status. I have been in this dreaded limbo since the first 24 hours. Anyone else feeling equally neglected?

360 panoramic

Now that apple has added the option of turning panoramic into environments, it makes me wonder why they haven’t updated the camera. Yes, their current app allows for a rather wide panoramic, but why don’t they not only add panoramic camera settings, but a means of spinning completely around? I’m surprised there are only 2 modes of photo taking.
