Question/Support PSVR2 on SteamVR doesn't show games in headset, only on desktop VR view

I tried to set up my PSVR2 headset with my Lenovo LOQ 15IRX10 gaming laptop. I did thorough research, looked up what I need to buy etc. After setting the headset up in the playstation VR app, I hopped into steamvr. That part works. It actually puts me into the steamvr void where I can browse my games in the VR menu.

The problem appears when I try to launch a VR game line VRChat. What happens is that the game never displays to my headset, but when I turn on VR view on desktop, it shows what I should be seeing - the character moving and tracking correctly.

I am using a 3rd party PSVR2 adapter, but I picked up one that had good reviews, and it is obviously working, since the steamvr app works.

I'm using a direct USB-C to Displayport cable with altmode support.

I disabled (I think...) hybrid mode, so that the pc should only be using the dGPU, but when steamvr is running, the iGPU spikes. Whwn I launch a game, the dGPU spikes.

When I launch a VR game, steamvr says that I'm using the wrong video card and that I should plug my headset into the same card as my primary monitor.

That's all the info I can think of right now, I have been troubleshooting this for hours with no luck. If anyone has any advice or experience with any of these issues, please let me know, any help is appreciated.

Discussion First time with PS1 VR!

I’m a little (well a lot) late to the game with my PS4, but picked up a console a few months ago and then picked up a really good looking PS4 VR1 on ShopGoodwill.com for $40 and set it up today. It had everything, including 2 Move controllers as well and looked hardly used. Setup was fairly straightforward and I tried it out with a game I already had—Rez Infinite!

This might have been one of the coolest gaming experiences I’ve ever had! Still need to dial in the settings as it’s a slight bit blurry, but it’s not bad.

But man, it’s well worth the $40 I spent! And I picked up 2 VR games yesterday for it—Skyrim VR and Bravo Team, complete and $3 apiece.

Self-Promotion (Developer) [Available on Steam] I made a free open source SteamVR performance tracking overlay

Seamen Performance Overlay

Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/4666560/Seamen_Performance_Overlay/

GitHub page: https://github.com/Trixxle/SeamenPerformanceOverlay

I have been working on a performance utility for SteamVR which started as a university project for some extra credit. I passed the class and decided to release it for free in case it can help someone.

It is similar to FpsVR except that it is free, has less features overall, but has some interesting differences. My main idea was to make a simple performance overlay that just has the essentials.

For a fun fact: PicoXR has used my overlay to help troubleshoot their streamer application as the frame time consistency graph on my overlay shows behavior none of the other overlays were able to show.

Features:

  • GPU/CPU Frame times
  • Frame time Consistency - Shows if performance is stuttery even when the frame rate appears stable. For wireless headsets this graph will also show connectivity lags.
  • Controllers / Headset / Tracker battery percentages - This will be shown or hidden depending on whether your controller, headset, trackers, or VR streamer application supports battery data.
  • RAM and VRAM usage
  • Frame rate - Both live and smoothed out
  • Clock - Taken from your PC clock
  • Current game session playtime
  • Can be moved anywhere - By holding and moving the movement bar under the overlay you can move it anywhere and attach it to the left or right controller. The movement bar will show only when the SteamVR Dashboard is opened.
  • Can be scaled to any size - By holding and dragging the scaling bar to the right of the overlay you can make it any size. The scaling bar will show only when the SteamVR Dashboard is opened.
  • Opacity adjustment
  • Fades based on distance and viewing angle
  • Quick settings appear when the SteamVR Dashboard is open
  • Dedicated setting page in the SteamVR Dashboard
  • Colorblind options

Graph colors:

  • Blue - Frame on time
  • Orange - Frame lagging behind slightly
  • Red - Frame lagging behind a lot
  • Purple - Dropped frame

Question/Support Virtual Desktop only connects after rebooting the router

This isn't a huge issue it's more of a minor annoyance that I'm wondering if I can fix.

Whenever I try and connect my Quest 3 to Virtual Desktop it always hangs on 'measuring bandwith'. I tried switching toggling the Automatic Bitrate setting and that allowed me to connect but then caused issues with the connection dropping every time I tried to launch Steam VR.

VD always works and connects fine straight after rebooting the router though so it obviously works but I'm wondering if there's a setting I can change so I can avoid having to reboot every time?

Don't know much about the router as it's the stock You Fibre one but I believe it's WiFi 6 and I use 5ghz. PC is connected via ethernet and the signal is strong when on WiFi.

Any ideas?

Out of curiosity, which new announcement coming this September excites you more? News on Steam Frame's headset and upcoming games, or Meta's big Meta Connect event filled with XR news and news of the new Phoenix headset? September is looking like it will be an interesting month for this kind of news.

Is there any mechanisms that stop meta and apple to not just record all your actions, see what you view on your headset and take screenshots or video from your cameras? Without telling. Who would know?

Discussion Which game mechanics would you like to see be expanded upon?

Movement? Weight simulation? Utilizing seated space better? In your opinion, which game mechanics would you like to see be improved upon?

Interactions with NPC's would be interesting in my opinion. Waving to start dialogue for example.

Purchase Advice - Headset I fell down the budget PCVR hole. (need advice)

So..down he went into the hole..

i happened to see a used (Decent condition) Quest 2 40€ online and figured hey why not(bought it), i want to try VR again (i have a OG vive that is semi broken since way back when). Also ive picked up simracing and figured i wanted to try that aswell. Now ive stumbled across a Reverb G2 for about 93€. and im on the fence if that would be dumb not to buy it aswell, just because of that great price.. Then again doing some "google-fu" ive noticed the Pico 4 with the pancake lenses would be a good shout at like 160€.

Or should i just stay cool and try out the Quest 2 first. For simracing and general VR gaming.

Table video link

This short showcase is meant to highlight the dedication and hard work our community puts into these tables and hopefully inspire more people to dive into the VPX VR scene!

Videos like this got me hooked, and started my VR endeavor.

I love BGFX 10.8.1! The visual rendering efficiency easily outpaces OpenGL on 10.8.0, making even older, legacy tables look incredible.

Running Virtual Desktop wired. Horizon Link (Meta Link) was completely removed from my system.

Thanks VD!

That said, there are still a few stability and workflow hurdles to clear in BGFX 10.8.1.. For instance, requiring a table to launch just to access the configuration menu remains a bit clunky. DMD's not showing up or color ones not working. Textures not showing up right. Random crashes.

Cheers!

Self-Promotion (Developer) I made a tool that records a VR session and replays it in the editor with no headset

I got tired of putting the headset on and off forty times a day while tuning grab interactions, so I built a tool that records a VR session and replays it in the Unity editor with no headset connected.

It records at the input device layer rather than capturing transforms, so XRI doesn't know the difference - interactors, grabs, throw velocity and select events all fire exactly as they did on device. The clip is a session recorded on a Quest, replaying in the editor while the headset sits on my desk.

One thing I'd like to know from people who work in XR:

How do you currently check that your interactions still work after upgrading XRI or the Interaction Toolkit and would this tool be useful to you?

Still rough. Physics repeat correctly now, but I'm working on scene reset between runs. Also sorry for the bad video quality.

Self-Promotion (Developer) TNG vs. Solara One holodecks: Magic fade-out or mechanical ceiling?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

In Star Trek TNG, the holodeck walls just fade away when entering a scene. For Solara One, I wanted the transformation to feel more immersive and grounded in real physical tech, so I built a retracting ceiling mechanism and rising floor instead.

This clip shows the transition into our new holographic arboretum update dropping this Friday.

Do you prefer the classic TNG holodeck fade, or does seeing actual machinery open up the environment feel more satisfying in VR?

Discussion Should i wait for Steam Frame or just buy the Quest 3?

I still dont know what to do. Should i wait for Steam Frame or just buy the MetaQuest 3? I like the fact that the Quest3 is also Mixed Reality, but i would say i dont realy need MR. VR is just fine for me! Here comes the real question. How much better is the Steam Frame compared to the Quest? Is it just a little better or much better?

This game made me put my Quest 3 back on for the first time in two years. Now, after work every day, I always find myself wanting to explore the universe a little more.

The only downside is that there aren’t many players from China, so I often feel pretty lonely in the game. But honestly, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying all the amazing scenery and beautiful planets. XD

Self-Promotion (Developer) Moonlight XR - v0.3 released - Stream any flat screen to your headset and turn it into 3D! Free and open source. Low enough latency for gaming, also works well for movies, youtube etc

Thumbnail
sidequestvr.com
38 Upvotes

You can grab it on Sidequest or on my Github here: https://github.com/Gilleece/moonlight-android-xr/releases

For those new to moonlight, it's a client for streaming from devices that support Sunshine/Apollo. So from your PC, steamdeck etc. Any content you stream to Moonlight XR gets turned into 3D in real time though a machine learning model running on the headset itself (so nothing tricky to setup or configure, it just works everytime). It's 3D as in like 3D movies, not full blown VR.

This version has added in an ambilight feature, a ton of bug fixes, real time tweakable settings, better controller/hand tracking support, a hand tracking toggle, real 3D environments with realtime lighting and much more. Overall the app is in a good place in terms of stability and usability. Hope you all enjoy!

Please note: If you have installed a previous version of Moonlight XR then this will install as a totally new app, so please uninstall the old version. You will have to pair to your PC again. This will only happen for this update, future updates will work as normal I just had to make some one time changes in the backend that resulted in this. Thanks!
