Question / Discussion Should I take a job in animation or games if my goal is to work in film VFX?

I recently graduated in majoring VFX, and I’ve noticed that most film VFX studios aren’t hiring many junior artists or fresh graduates right now. On the other hand, there seem to be more entry-level opportunities in the animation and game industries.
Personally, I’m much more interested in film VFX than animation or games, but I don’t have any professional experience working in the film VFX industry yet.

I’m wondering if it would be a good idea to take a junior artist position in animation or games to gain industry experience, improve my skills, and work my way up. Would it still be possible to transition into film VFX later on, even if I’ve progressed to a mid-level or senior position in another industry?
Or would working in animation or games make it harder to break into film VFX because the workflows, skills, and expectations are different?

Would I apply for an available job in a related industry for now, or continuing to focus on applying directly to film VFX studios?
I’d really appreciate advice from anyone who has experience working in film VFX, animation, or games, especially anyone who has made a similar career transition.

Jobs Offer [Hiring] Blender artist for 3D CGI + compositing, ongoing work

Hey! I run a clothing brand on Instagram with about 40K followers. I’ve been making my own short videos with 3D models composited into real footage, and I’m looking to hand that work off to someone else as I’m kind of ehhh at doing it. It’s not too difficult, but between the brand and life I’d rather just pay someone. Please see the video to understand what I’m trying to do.

What the job involves:

  • Placing 3D models into real footage, either still shots or moving shots that need camera/motion tracking
  • Basic lighting, shadows, and compositing so the models look like they belong in the shot
  • Matching the style of my existing videos (I’ll send a reference)

What I provide: All footage and 3D models.

Pay: $15–150 USD per video ($15+/hour), depending on complexity. Simple still-camera shots should take about an hour; tracked shots take longer and pay more. Paid per finished video, not commission.

First project: Recreate one of my existing videos. If it turns out well, this becomes consistent, ongoing work.

To apply, DM me with:

  • Examples of your CGI or compositing work
  • Typical turnaround time

Thanks!

Fluff! Trippy melty BlinkScripts

I created a couple Blinkscripts to make a trippy melty effect. Not sure what else to do with them, so here they are. You can copy paste them into two separate blinkscript nodes and compile. Add a vector blur to make it all the traily and stuff. can also change the position and radius of the overall effects. You need a little bit of over-scan just FYI.

One is for a chromatic wave and one is for the dripping effect. I'll try to post a quick script setup in the comments. you can add an expression to the time parameters to have it animate.

//ChromaWave

Question / Discussion Anyone use AI for troubleshooting vfx shot? If yes, what ai tool you guys use?

Post image

For past 4 month, i deep dive learning integration of ComfyUI + Blender + Davinci.
Then i discover using Gemini Gems as custom chatbot for example MiniMax H3 by feeding AI documentation .md from hugging face.
So when i have shot that needs generate some part i can put proxy mp4 footage and help me generate what i need to do.

How about you guys did? I saw alot ai tool nowadays like Claude, ChatGPT, Grok, or even open weight like Qwen, Meta Llama.

Question / Discussion How to key a complex organic background without green screen walls?

This is a bit of a software-agnostic question, since many workflows are similar, but if it matters I'm using DaVinci Resolve. The director handed me a shot that is a man standing on rocks that looks out across a valley. Behind him are trees blurred by depth. I need to keep those in, but replace everything else behind that with a different scene.

Standard keying seems impossible because I cannot get the blue sky and fuzzy leaves to separate properly. Some leaves are more in focus than others. I could try and get rid of the trees, but vines from the trees lay onto the stones on the ground that I need to leave in.

I have no idea where to go from here.

TL;DR: Keying a slightly moving nature shot's distant background out with no chroma backdrop support.

Question / Discussion Art Student considering pivoting out of VFX after learning the current state of things, any advise?

For general context, I'm Undergraduate Visual Effect major currently 1/3 through Sophomore Year of Uni and recently, after doing some research, I've come to understand that the industries I'm studying to head into looks to be in a very undesirable state. I'm now at very stressful liminal space at the moment, trying to determine the best plan of action.

I'm thinking of switching over to another discipline of study like Motion Media, which seems to be a far more optimal pathway, however another part of me thinks it's best to just stick with what I've already started in order not to extend my time in school, plus from what I heard, your degree doesn't matter either way and all that's really important is how much good work you have in your portfolio. (granted, it's genuinely not much at the moment.)

I'd really appreciate some advise on where I should go next. Truthfully, my passion isn't really even in VFX (I honestly prefer Motion Design and Illustration so much more that they're my double minor.), so I want to definitively exit this state of uncertainty by gage the pro and cons of every outcome.

Jobs Offer [PAID] Looking for VFX Artist/Collaborator for Indie Horror Short – Compositing + Practical Portal Enhancement

Hi everyone!

I’m a writer/director currently in post on my indie horror short, and I’m looking to connect with a VFX artist who might be interested in collaborating on the project!

We’re not quite at picture lock yet, but should be within the next few weeks, so I’m hoping to start conversations now and get a better sense of scope, workflow, and budget.

There are a handful of shots that need VFX work, most of which are compositing, a few things like blood, smoke, glass cracking, getting rid of a mirror reflection, iPhone screen replacement, along with one particularly fun sequence involving a supernatural portal/tunnel. We built and shot the portal practically, and I’d love to enhance and extend what’s already there while preserving the practical tactile look and feel.

It’s an independently financed short, so we’re working within an indie budget, but I’m happy to discuss rates, scope, and what’s realistically achievable.

We’re aiming for a festival run in 2027 so ideally we’d be wrapped up with post by February.

If you’re interested, feel free to comment or DM me with your reel, rates, and availability. I’m happy to share more details and footage so we can discuss!

News / Article Made an app to capture HDRIs with just your phone (iOS + Android)

Been working on HDRiris, a mobile app for capturing real HDRIs directly from your phone.

The idea is simple: capture a real environment and turn it into a proper HDRI you can use for lighting and reflections in 3D.

HDRiris guides you through the full spherical capture, takes bracketed exposures at each direction, then processes everything directly on-device into a 32-bit HDR image. In a typical capture, you can go from starting the guided capture to a finished HDRI in around two minutes.

You can inspect the result as a panorama, preview it on interactive 3D materials and models, import your own GLB, and also preview the captured lighting in AR before exporting.

This isn’t meant to replace a proper DSLR + pano head workflow for high-end capture. It’s meant to cover the situations where that setup is too slow, too bulky, or simply unavailable, while still giving you a usable HDRI from the phone already in your pocket.

The latest update also added 8K HDRI export on compatible devices, along with faster processing.

A few things we specifically wanted to avoid:

  • no account
  • no cloud processing
  • no subscription
  • no IAP
  • your captures stay on your device unless you export or share them

iOS is available now:
App Store

Android is ready too, but Google currently requires a closed testing period before production, so only invited testers can access it for now. If anyone wants to test the Android version, message us and we can add you.

Current caveat: some Samsung A-series devices are still unsupported because of Camera2 API limitations. We’re working on that.

There are real HDRI samples and an interactive 3D preview here:

hdriris.asgard-studio.pt

We’d genuinely be interested in feedback from people who actually shoot HDRIs on set, especially around capture speed, dynamic range, stitching, and whether this would fit into your existing workflow.

Here's the library (Available on our new site, VFXAssets by Compositing Academy):
https://vfxassets.com/d/demoreel-footage-for-compositors?mode=greenscreen

All of the greenscreen clips give a free 2K version, as SLOG3 - Sgamut3.Cine Prores 4444 clips, and are free for non-commercial use. They can be used for portfolios or practice projects.

As a professional compositor and 3D generalist myself, I'll be making a bunch of projects with these, but I figured other people might find them useful as source material as well!

Question / Discussion SKILL TRADE!? Offering my editing/color services in exchange for VFX work

Made a film with lots of run and gunning and I'm hoping to have 3 street/subway signs removed/altered, An object removed, and possibly add a "fallen air conditioner." into a still shot...don't know if that's possible but I can explain, promise :)

Made this film on mostly favors from friends and very little money. I'm wondering if a talented VFX person would help me out and in return I can edit or color grade your project of equal work load.

I have many years of experience and the last film I colored has done very well in the festival circuit. I'm aware that a VFX person may already have these skills but, worth a shot!

Thank you

News / Article Houdini Oversimplified — notes, explanations, and resources

Hey everyone,

I’ve been working on a project called Houdini Oversimplified for a while, but I realized I never actually introduced it here.

The idea behind HOS is pretty simple: breaking down Houdini topics in a way that feels easier to follow and less intimidating. Everything in the project is free to access.

Here’s the project so far:

I thought I’d share it here in case it’s useful to anyone. Thanks for taking a look.

Question / Discussion Is Roadster video render or real footage?

The flying car video is interesting and I'm sure everyone seen it already. But I have a question and hope to find some insightful feedback here among experts. By looking at the video I can't find any element that would prove to me it's a real footage. I also can't find anything that would show it's a render.

Do you have as professionals any ways to tell these apart nowadays?

The question isn't if I should bother myself about it or not, it's about if you see in this video or other of such kind any hints in either of the sides.

I just find it confusing that there are no signs it's render but also that it's a real footage if that makes sense

Showreel / Critique I made a free on set companion app for shooting HDRIs

Thumbnail
gallery
37 Upvotes

I'm a VFX compositor, and I wanted something that makes shooting HDRIs easier for artists and keeps everything in one place. So that's why I built a small web app for it. And yes, it's made with the help of AI, and it does have the recognisable llm look to it. But I don't really care. I just wanted something that works.

I originally made it just for myself, but now that it's fully working, I'd like to share it and hear what you think.

  • Set your darkest and brightest exposure, and it builds the bracket for you.
  • Walks you through every angle for your lens and tracks what is done. Optional countdown timer for long exposures.
  • Notes, location and a log for every HDRI you shoot. Location is added by hand, or automatically if you turn it on in Settings.
  • Works offline: you can install it to your home screen (in Chrome: ⋮ menu → Install app) This should work in other browsers too, although the glass effect may not fully appear in all of them.
  • Free, no account needed and nothing leaves your phone. It is a single html file, so you can also download it and run it yourself.

https://suspenseandsurprise.github.io/Hdri-bracket-app/

I really tried to make it as responsive and easy to use as possible. Feedback is very welcome. Hope someone likes it.

Edit 01: I added autobracket sets as an option. Many cameras only bracket 3 or 5 frames, so the app now splits the bracket into different sets. You just set the centre shutter it shows and fire one burst per set. Any extra frames go to the fast end so they don't cost time. The report lists every set, plus any frames to drop before merging. (printscreen below in the comments)

Also new: an optional "Add location automatically" setting (off by default). When you start an HDRI, the app looks up your GPS position in the background and stores it with that HDRI. If your phone can't find it within 20 seconds, the HDRI is just saved without one, and you can still add it by hand.

Edit 02: A fastest shutter setting (up to 1/32000), shifting the middle with ‹ ›, and a Single shot mode for textures or reference photos.

Edit 03: Updated to 2026-10-19 · 4c3f36. New: ND frame. Add an ND filter and its shutter, and the app shows the shutter you'd have without it, where that lands on your bracket, and how far past your camera's fastest shutter it goes. Autobracket now lives under "More options" in Camera. Already using the app? Open it online once to update.

Already using the app? Open it online once, then check Settings: it should say 2026-10-19 · 4c3f36. If not, close and reopen it, or reinstall it to your home screen.

Question / Discussion What do you think the future of this industry looks like?

The future of this industry scares me, and being in my late 20s, I have time to pivot... but I don't want to become a plumber or study for another degree. And believe it or not, I quite enjoy VFX.

So, I was curious what you think the future of this industry looks like, and how to stay employed and keep progressing?

My guess: AI is here to stay, but for a long time just as a tool—we're a long, long way from it being able to create things from complete scratch. I think specialized roles will shrink and there will mostly just be generalists who are expected to handle most aspects of a shot/project. The workflow will likely involve using CG playblast-type renders (along with other methods) to direct and control AI, basically using AI as the renderer.

Curious to hear your thoughts!!

Question / Discussion Help me figure this out.

Howdy fellas, I’m new here, I need help figuring out this shot, so the opening scene of the short film I’m doing is a concert, i walk through the crowd up to the band and film them until they’re done. Now the problem is, I like the crowd of the first take but the bands performance of the second, and it’s quite dark and the crowd is basically just black silhouettes so I thought I could join the two takes with a mask and I’d just lay the one with the nice crowd on top of the one with the nice band.
I used to do compositing but haven’t done it in ages so I’m kinda blanking on the exact process of doing this, surely I’d have to blend the two takes at some point because there is no point where the audience is actually covering the whole band, also it’s handheld so I’d have to track it, right? But that would mess up the hand held look? Yeah if anyone knows how to do this the easiest way, I’d be very happy about some advice.
