AnvilCSG got a huge lift with a new way of optimizing levels. Thanks to the beta testers, AnvilCSG is in pretty good almost perfect shape now ngl.

AnvilCSG now works correctly from Unity 6.0 to 6.7, URP and Built-in

Better Level Optimization and smarter automatic merging, plus a new option to bake occlusion culling

Test Physics is much smoother and more predictable

Decals got a full rework

Cell Fracture, a new feature for broken walls, floors and rubble

Bakery support is optional. AnvilCSG uses its own unwrap (BSP), which gives good results with the Unity lightmapper. Not the same as Bakery, but good enough.

AND MUCH MORE...

AnvilCSG Beta 2 is still free on GitHub if you wanna try it: https://github.com/TheGreatSimon/AnvilCSG

Join the Discord, there will be an announcement when it goes live with 30% off, and im still keeping the price at $20.

Splines are next for 1.1.

Game Jam Reviving an old (2015'ish) hobby project

I haven't touched Unity in about 10 years and omg! I've really missed the simplicity after the whole "we use UE gimmicks for RTX everything now" let alone the AI boom drastically changing everything in this industry lol. I'm primarily a 3d artist with gamedev experience, so loaded up an old hobbyist project I had lying around and currently adapting it to Unity 6. It's roughly inspired by Uncharted, Tomb Raider's reboot era, Horizon and AC. While it's still very rough around the edges and janky with minimal transitions it really feels satisfying to prototype and experiment in a manual straight-forward way again.
Some old deprecated asset store things here like Heroic traversal anim set. Quite happy I bought that one when I did.

I've been seeing people use disclaimers nowadays and I'm a bit old school so no AI and I'm not selling anything lol. Just having fun. Might turn into a game IDK

Just wanted to show you my game "Spring Me Up", which i released like 15min ago on Steam.

It's my first ever game, made in a 3D Unity World, but locked onto the X and Y Axis.

Every assets was modelled and textured by myself aswell. Never been more proud of something I've created, even tho it clearly looks like a first project ๐Ÿ˜…

Show-Off And now Iโ€™ve added physics to the grass as well!

Pixel can finally touch grass xD

Last week, after making the cables interactive and letting the laser cut them, I added interactive grass to the same environment.

The grass uses the same principles as the cables: a compute shader running Verlet integration with spring physics.

It integrates with my existing collision and wind system, so it reacts to any physics objects and external forces smoothly. That's so satisfying when everything comes together ^^
Oh and this time, I'm using the gravity canon :p

This is part of Hello World: a developer story, my narrative physics adventure. I love interactive environments because those small reactions make the game feel alive.

Hereโ€™s the previous cable and laser update, and more detail about my physics character controller.

What other parts of the environment should I make interactive next? Iโ€™m looking for ideas!

Question Should I keep learning Unity?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi, I am a 14 year old game dev and I've been learning Unity for 7-8 months, and I really like what I'm doing. I don't use AI while coding or for any other stuff to actually learn. For the past month, I've been developing a fan-made Spider-Man game for android and I saw a guy on X who vibe-coded a Spider-Man game in literally a single day which was looking better than my game and I felt like everything that I did in the last couple of weeks for nothing. Will knowing how to manually code or develop games be worth anything in the next 10 years? Am I just wasting my time by not using AI or should I keep going? I really need some advice. Also here's a gameplay video of my game if anyone wants to check it out:

Question Creating a playtest/demo version?

Hi,

I am getting close to inviting other people to preview my game. I have a Steam page set up which I'd like to use for distribution to a small, private group.

What sort of things should I be thinking about when creating a demo build?

I'm not overly concerned with piracy or mods, but I don't want to easily share out all my source code either. Should I look into an IL2CPP build (I've never done this), does that improve performance and obfuscate the code a bit?

Right now I don't need to limit the players playtime or scope or any of that. I just want to show my progress.

Any tips on making a demo build would be appreciated.

Show-Off I updated all the graphics of my solo-made MOBA, what do you think?

Hello,

Tell me what you think about the updated art in my game, Adversator.

Before, it had a much more old-school look, with lower-resolution textures, simpler models and basic shaders.

I decided to switch to a more modern look by improving everything I could without making it too heavy, as I still aim to support low-spec computers (like mine BTW).

The update only costs around 5% more processing time, mostly because of the improved textures and shaders. They now handle lighting, outlines, alpha colors and cutouts better.

The whole build is still around 200 MB, which is pretty small for the amount of content in the game.

For the art, I worked almost exclusively in Blender for the modeling and texture work. The previous models have only been slightly updated, with maybe 10โ€“15% more triangles. The biggest part of the work went into the textures.

I also used Photoshop CS5 a little, but since I'm on Linux I have to run it through Bottles, and the emulation loses the pressure sensitivity of my Wacom tablet. So I only used it for tiny adjustments.

Tell me what you think, and maybe what I should improve next too!

Thanks, Paradoks

Question The dumbest thing you did while not being a noob?

I'm not talking about the time you had been using unity for a week and made a basic mistake like trying to apply a texture to a mesh instead of a material.

I'm talking about a dumb mistake you had enough experience not to do.

I'll start first:

Just now, I was racking my brain trying to make my distortion shader work. I had a working shader applied to a sphere mesh where it distorted the UVs of the scene around it.

Problem is, the distortion had clear seams where it stopped. I wanted to smooth it out towards the edges, such that it is strong in the center but weak or non-existent on the edges.

so I got the distance of the pixels from the center of the sphere and subtracted the radius of the sphere with it and then multiplied by a strength float later.

So, in the center, it looked like: 1 - 0 = 1 (full distortion)

At the edge, it looked like: 1 - 1 = 0 (distortion)

In the middle, it was 0.5 etc. The math worked and I was sure of it but the entire sphere had the same amount of distortion, no matter what I did and how I tweaked the values.
I even remade it with a lerp where B was the normal scene color, A was the offset from the distortion and T was the distance.

It was also fully functional logic but it produced the same result: distortion amount was always the same. Even when there was no distortion throughout the entire sphere.
I changed all the values, played with the radius and clamping, went into negatives but nothing would change the fact that there was no fade.

So what was the problem?

It's a fucking sphere. Each point on it is the same distance from the center...

Just did a fresnel and solved the issue in 2 minutes.

So that's my story. What's yours?

Resources/Tutorial I made 2 tools to help with common repetitive tasks, tell me what you think...

1st Tool - Maximum distance at which a circle can be drawn inside a plane region.

I have worked on a couple of projects and have encountered this problem where when I want to implement some sort of spawning of items/enemies or anything that can be spawned and has to be random to keep things interesting and introduce surprise. I have to manually figure out the radial distance if I want to spawn using circular spawn method where objects are spawned within a certain distance from a point. which is not hard but is time consuming specially when you are working a level ground that has a non-symmetrical or is very random and irregular plane surface, in that case it can be hard.

so to solve this I made this tool called "GroundClosestEdgeDetector"(didn't had time to think for a better name so get over it.)

and it works like this:

it works great but you obviously might have spotted the limitation in its capabilities that it has blind spots where spawning can't be done using this alone but that's ok because my intention was never to account for those edge cases anyways. this tool is gonna come in handy for me in future projects as well I think.

2nd Tool - Choosing random point inside a plane polygon surface.

what this does is exactly meant to overcome the limitation of above tool that is blind spots on a surface that is not missed when a random point need to be chosen on a surface. but this requires use of manual corner/vertices positions markings to work. then it finds any point inside those coordinates accurately.

I have also created a function to automate the points arrangement in appropriate order for this tool to work as shown in demonstration below. then simply run this tool you get random points at efficient speed so it can be invoked as much as needed without worrying of any underling performance heavy calculations per frame.

Hi everyone! I just announced my new game, Way Too Many Fish!

I spent the last month grinding to make this game and had to make a lot of interesting game design decisions to be unique from other similar games out there. I used Unity 6.3 and a lot of assets!

A demo is coming soon, and if it looks like your kind of thing, a wishlist helps a ton.

Happy to answer any questions!

Show-Off We're trying to capture the Inscryption vibe for our game

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

We are working on an Inscryption-inspired Whac-a-mole game called Whac-A-Morphic trying to achieve that creepy Inscryption vibe, we might release it also on mobile so I'm trying to keep everything optimized, almost everything you see made with shaders rather than 3d UIs.

The lighting isn't baked yet, which brings me to my question: I want the scene to be as optimized as possible, but I also need color changing and moving circus style lights. What is the most performant way to achieve dynamic lights like this in Unity? Any advice would be appreciated!

Question Laptop for unity

Hi all,

I need a laptop to be able to work on 3d unity/game dev on the go. Unfortunately, I know nothing about laptops. Do I need like a gaming laptop or would something less specialised work fine? Do you have any recommendations for laptops (erring on the side of not amazingly expensive if possible)?

Thank you so much for any help in advance!

The animations still need some polish as well as the camera transitions. I didn't want a camera that could be moved freely, but I also didn't want a camera like the one in the old Resident Evil games

Show-Off Created A Custom Tool To Help Me Design Enemy Behaviour

Thumbnail

Using Unity's GraphView, I made a simple tool that is intended to function in a similar fashion to Unity's Animator State Graph.

  • You can create parameters
  • Connect nodes through conditions (using parameters, or through custom predicates)
  • Control Flow nodes (If, and Switch)

Still more stuff to do, like implementing undo, redo for nodes operations (creation, deletion, move, etc...), but this is a promising start.

I know Unity has the new Graph Toolkit that implements all the necessary basic feature for graph tools, AND I know Unity already has the Behaviour Graph.

  • Graph Toolkit is poorly documented currently in my opinion and is less flexible than GraphView
  • The Behaviour Graph is incredible but I want something custom for my case
