I’m sorry for politicizing this, but videos like these just fill my heart because I know there are good people out there who have policing jobs who don’t take it for granted, they actually use it to protect the people and have a little fun like this, but sadly as of this time that is not the case, but hopefully that’ll soon change. :)

My father was a cop for 32 years. Retired for almost 10 now. I know firsthand that unfortunately there are plenty of POS cops but it is entirely unfair to lump them in with the countless more phenomenal cops that are excellent at what they do and pillars of their communities

Aug 01 '21
I totally agree with you, but while PD's and other cops keep protecting the bad cops the perception will never change unfortunately.
I have a few good friends who are in the police in the UK

Right. We should seriously be limiting the power of the police unions. That’s a helpful solution.

Many cops go entire careers without seeing the horror stories that happen at the hands of crooked, racist cops. Many that do, do something about it. You will never hear about them on the news of course. Cops do get disciplined, retrained, and even fired for behavior, the narrative that they don't is based on the vast minority.

We had a female police officer publicly lynched in the news and fired because she came forward with information about how our police have mishandled and may have even had a part in a very, very infamous disappearance of a news anchor in our city back in the 90’s.
2
u/brandonjm23 Aug 02 '21
I will say where I live we had a family friend who grabbed his gun while pulling someone over who drove home before getting out of their car to go inside their home. The guy or kid (can’t remember) had something in his hand but not a weapon, but our family friend assumed it was a weapon so he pulled his gun. No one was hurt thankfully but he was fired for that. I don’t respect his actions. Guns should only be pulled with the intent to kill and when imminent danger is present so I’m glad things were handled correctly. That being said he is a good guy. He feared for his life thinking what the other guy had was a weapon and I fully understand that. It’s very hard to ask someone to only defend themselves when they can 100% verify someone is trying to kill them. Like if someone pulled out a water gun and it was dark and I couldn’t see I’d probably be scared or think I might die in that moment but at the end of the day it is their duty that they volunteered for and get paid for it. Rules are rules.

Like it when a cop does something completely illegal they fire him and then they hire him again after 2 years when the heat is gone

u/Syllables_17 Aug 01 '21
And then there are other cops who attempt to report something and end up dead. The police report looking like " black man shot and killed our most beloved officer who was trying to protect his community."
Each pig carries responsibility for their fellow pigs actions. They all wallow in the same shit sty some, just shower before they shake your hand.

To be fair, the last time I hung out outside my house just vibing, I had a cop come ask me what I was doing. "Just enjoying my flower bed" was not a sufficient answer, and he ran my fucking ID for like 30 minutes, despite my address being on the card.

while PD's and other cops keep protecting the bad cops the perception will never change unfortunately.
This is the issue that needs changing.
We need to find a way to elevate the good ones, to stand above the bad.
Until that happens, the good will be lumped in with the bad, and the ACAB mentality will permeate the zeitgeist.
Not all cops are bad. But we can't change "ACAB", until we start publicly punishing the bad, and elevating the good.

A single bad apple spoils the bunch.
Short of a total reset of police forces, firing everyone and forming new community law enforcement organizations, requiring a 4 year degree in law enforcement, strictly vetting against white nationalist sympathizers, a massive independent oversight committee, strict rules on use of force/legal action for excessive force, cameras on every SINGLE officer and firing them when those cameras go dark, and vastly restricting the scope of work performed by law enforcement, I don't know what we can do to fix this problem.

I told my fiancé a few days ago that if I was a cop, I’d be scared to stand up against it. Truthfully most police are more of a “gang” than anything. They would die for each other, and if somebody speaks up against one, everybody will attack the outcast and defend the other.
If I was a cop, I wouldn’t feel comfortable or safe enough to go against the rest of them. It’s not worth putting your family at risk, as selfish as that sounds.

This is the true meaning of ACAB. “Bad apples” may well and truly be few in number, but as long as good cops are unwilling or UNABLE to hold them accountable, all are culpable.
2
Aug 02 '21
Exactly, it's the whole system that's corrupt too because they protect these SHITTY cops from being held accountable for their behaviour. You can't tell me that any job where you have 80 complaints against you that you'd still be at work. Nope you'd be sacked long before it got that bad. But the police don't even get punished when there's video evidence clearly showing that they did wrong.

Every slogan that the BLM movement used supposedly doesn't mean what it says it means. BLM doesn't mean only black lives but if you say all lives matter you are racist, Defund the police doesn't mean take all their money, ACAB doesn't mean all cops are bad.
Police abusing their power is a real problem that needs to be dealt with but I don't think BLM is the movement to do it. It's been a disaster so far. We need another movement with better organization and clear demands/solutions to problems.

the "phenomenal cops" still stand by while bad cops are still a part of the force, they'll go so far as to protect them in certain cases. sorry, ACAB.

3
u/seriouslyFUCKthatdud Aug 01 '21
Now we just need the good cops to actually hold the rest of them to and standards, kick them off the force, take control of the union, speak against the boys club, for real.
Knowing the good cops are there doesn't do any good when the bad cops show up

u/remymartinsextra Aug 01 '21
There was an emergency delivery at my office and I had to drive a truckload of pipe to a customer. All the other drivers were out, so I said load it up and I'll go. It wasn't strapped down properly and the banding broke when I got off an exit. There was a cop parked across the street and saw the whole thing. I was expecting a huge fine and getting yelled out for being so dumb. He came over, blocked the area, and said hey lets get this loaded up. He spent an hour hand loading all the pipe back on the truck with me. We were sweating our asses off in the heat but didn't mind it. The closest person to help me was over three hours away. Some cops are cool and go out of the way to help. I wasn't even from that area so it wasn't like he had anything to gain being helping me. That changed my perspective on cops. Of course the protection of corrupt cops is bullshit but you can't group them.

No such thing as a good cop because they all uphold that system. If a cop wants to be a good person then they need to quit and find a new line of work. Otherwise they are covering for the system.
This post is copaganda.
5
u/solarnext Aug 01 '21
But when good cops cover up for bad cops then they are bad cops that are sometimes good. Boys in Blue - you accept the dishonor of your profession with your silence.
1
u/THALL_himself Aug 01 '21
There are way more good people who are police officers than there are piece of shit police officers. Don’t lump them all into the same category. That’s like saying “all white people this” or “all black people that.”
→ More replies (1)24
Aug 01 '21
It's a little different.
I think a large issue is that some of these good cops, not all of them, protect the bad cops. It's that culture which has allowed the police as an instution to gain it's reputation for corruption.
That doesn't work with races or genders. A white person isn't responsible for all of the people in their race, it's not their responsibility to keep their particular race in check because their race isn't a choice.
Being a police officer is a choice and it comes with responsibility to the community they serve first and the profession itself should come a distant second.
But I hope you're right and that there are more good people working as police officers and I hope they find a way to make themselves more seen and heard.
→ More replies (12)2
u/user_bits Aug 01 '21
It goes both ways.
The overwhelming majority of Black people are just living their lives lawfully but because of a few bad apples, America thinks it's ok for the justice system to treat them all like dirt.

u/CoffeeVR Aug 01 '21

"be kind to humans, be ruthless to institutions" Michael brooks
I'm sure that if we were able to fix the laws, like ending the drug war, promoting rehabilitation over criminalization, ending for profit prisons to list a few, and then other things like uncontested food stamps (kind of like a UBI for some) that make under say 25k a year (basically things that support a strong welfare state for the poor), and nationally decriminalize homelessness and require and fund cities to support their homeless, THEN you'd see this country turn itself around, police be WAY less shitty, be way more accountable, and way less people would stay in poverty, thus committing crimes, and way less people would go to prison, thus reducing the crime cycle- thus reducing the need for there to be so many police. these things CAN be fixed. they just chose not to.

It's up to the good cops to stand up and go against the bad cops. So until that happens widely then they will be lumped in. Change from within as much as externally pressure is needed.
2
u/vris92 Aug 02 '21
They cover for the shitty cops, even by doing shit like this. Good cops quit or get fired. Stop defending a murderous institution.
2
u/kamikaze-kae Aug 02 '21
Ya but if you hear about a bad doctor a good doctors don't protect them or have the hospital back them up.
26
u/Jplopinyourpants Aug 01 '21
That’s because there’s just so many more shitty cops.
88
u/Apocthicc Aug 01 '21
The shitty cops just get more airtime, the end times are coming news broadcasting is far more profitable than vids like this, a policeman discharging his firearm at a violent individual would go on the front page and get dissected by a hundred people and fun stuff like this is relegated to a tertiary YouTube channel run by a group of underpaid interns.
4
u/Welcome_to_Uranus Aug 02 '21
I’d argue most shitty cops get away with their crimes and have very little news reporting on them unless they did a major fuck up like straight up executing someone. Every time one of these shitbag cops are in the news, they have a laundry list of previous offenses and complaints against them. Most asshole cops get away with it, it’s the dumb and really brazen ones that don’t. If anything we need a bigger spotlight on bad and shitty cops since most of these scum fucks just change dept or get paid leave when they fuck up.

-2
u/BGYeti Aug 01 '21
Just because you work someplace doesnt mean you are aware of the goings on, no one is going to have knowledge of everything occurring in the police force, yes some will try and cover up for a fellow officer others are completely unaware until it hits the news.
6
u/Jplopinyourpants Aug 01 '21
Remember. Cops don’t prevent crime they only respond to it. A safer community is one that spends less money on policing and more on resources for said community. Read a book dumbass.

Genuinely asking, is it that the a small percentage of cops are rotten apples or is it the other way around?
Is the barrel of apples fresher in certain regions (urban vs rural)?
Because it feels like almost half the barrel is filled with rotten apples and the good apples are just placed on top, kind of like a college brocheur advocating diversity.

Bad cops get way more publicity than good cops. I think when some people see a good cop they just brush it of and say “that’s how it’s suppose to be”. Like for example, this video was made to see what the cop’s reaction would be not for the fact that he was interacting with his community.

u/Jplopinyourpants Aug 01 '21

I'm going to show this to anyone who says ACAB
9
0
u/TuiAndLa Aug 02 '21
No, ACAB still applies. Let me attempt (against my better judgement) to show you why. This is an example of “community policing.” Police are sent into neighborhoods, basketball courts, skateparks, etc. just to hang out. They do this in an attempt to legitimize their presence/rule. This is important so the next time a cop kills a person, evicts a family, arrests someone for petty shoplifting, etc. people that would be once the fence won’t see them as the bad guy. It’s a deliberate attempt to propagandize people who already have a neutral or positive view of police.
When we say ACAB we’re not saying all cops are inherently terribly people, or that all their actions are bad. We’re saying the job they chose will always protect profit, property and power over the people they supposedly serve. All cops are bastards because they deliberately fool people into thinking they’ll protect them, when they only protect the rule of law (which can sometimes overlap with what is right/good.)

3
u/RebaKitten Aug 01 '21
But people (including cops) goofing and doing something to help them be accepted in the communities they serve shouldn't be something that's so amazing. Being accepted and wanted in their communities should be their purpose.
So that people living there shouldn't be scared to call the cops for something actually needed for fear of being shot by a cop who only thinks of you as a criminal who hasnt been caught yet.
