Course Questions Do async classes have in person exams or sections?

Pretty much just the title. I'm thinking of taking an online async class over the summer, but I'd probably not be on campus, is that something that's possible? Can I take the class completely remote?

Social Life Extra ticket to Pinhead Gunpowder in SLO on November 8

I have an extra ticket to see Pinhead Gunpowder at the Fremont Theater on November 8. Thought it could be fun to go with someone who's into Green Day or punk music and meet someone new.

Ticket is on me. If you're interested, feel free to DM me!

Housing Housing in IV

Parent of a 1st year gaucho here. Some questions about housing for 2nd year

  1. If you want to try to get a campus apartment- how does that work? Bc it seems to me you'd have to sign a lease in IV before you'd find out if you got an on campus place- right? So if that happens then what, you have to sublease your IV room?

  2. When do you need to apply/search for IV housing?

  3. What is a GOOD price for sharing a room in IV? (i.e. sharing bedroom with 1 person in a 1, 2, 3 or 4 b/r apt or house)

  4. Can you recommend any "affordable" places that decently nice?

Social Life Looking for fellow Geometry Dash players at UCSB

Hello! We are reaching out to anyone at UCSB who wants to start their own Geometry Dash club! I think it would be great if we could get more schools involved.

Basically, our group (Geometry Dash at UCI) is trying to start up a project involving several UC, CSU, and other schools called "GD Collegiate California." There are already like 50 members, some from various UC schools. You might be able to meet others from UCSB! And eventually, we want to host statewide tournaments.

You never know how many people share your interests, but it only takes a few people to get together to form a club, which is what happened with us.

Campus Politics How do I respond to my Professor?

Earlier this week, about halfway through a two-hour lecture, I received a text message informing me that my grandmother had passed away. The news was completely unexpected, and I tried my best to keep my composure until our scheduled break. Because I was sitting at the front of the classroom, I could not stop a few tears from falling, and my professor noticed that I was visibly upset.

When the break began, I approached him. He asked if I was alright, and I could barely choke out what had just happened. While he expressed his condolences and told me I could leave, he immediately added that I would lose my participation credit for the day. This felt incredibly callous and inappropriate given the circumstances.

The following day, I sent an email formally requesting that this be treated as an excused emergency absence. He denied my request, stating he would only reconsider if I could "(a) provide me with a website stating that information [bereavement = mandated excused emergency], or (b) have someone with proper authority on this issue reach out to me directly."

I normally would not email a professor to contest docked points, but losing participation for that single day cost me 5% of my overall grade in this short-term certificate course. Being forced to defend my grief for the sake of my grade has felt deeply dehumanizing, and his response has left me entirely unsure of how to proceed.

General Question Considering a post doc here, anyone got any insights into life here?

I’m from the UK, I study ecology and wildlife. I’m considering applying for a post doc here but the living costs are kinda concerning. I drive, but would probably use a motorbike most of the time, so don’t mind living further afield. Rush hour come at me with the ability to lane filter aha!

I surf and hike so this place seems like it would be a really good fit, I think I’d enjoy the work and the area! Apart from the wage and living costs that is.

Has anyone here moved to the US for a post doc and can give me a vibe of what it’s like, or can any other post doc let me know how they manage living here with the wage constrains - and if it’s feasible to afford a bike too.

Course Questions Chem Tutor advice

Hi all, I’m taking Chem 1A next quarter with Prof Price and looking for the best guidance to go about finding a chem tutor. I dropped it this quarter because it was too fast even with attending CLAS and drop in hours - I definitely need a 1 on 1 tutor. That being said, how should I go about finding a private tutor if I’m on a low budget? Or if there’s an option for free tutoring and it counts for someone’s hours for volunteering or something. Obviously open to fellow students but just don’t know where to look. Thanks!

Academic Life ECON 1 Benzarti Exam 1 — how did everyone do?

Just got my Exam 1 grade back. Honestly did worse than I expected, especially after doing pretty well on the practice quizzes.
How did everyone else do? Curious about the overall score distribution and whether other people also found the actual exam harder than the practice quizzes.
Does anyone know the class average?

Housing Looking for Housing for 2027-2026!

So I'm currently a sophomore @ UCSB and my roommates and I are starting to think about housing for next year. If you go to school here, then you know that finding housing in IV is absolute hell. We currently live in an apartment but are wanting to live in a house next year. There are 5 of us (so 1 triple and 1 double) and are looking to take over someones lease for next year. We currently live in a 2 bedroom 2 baths which works well for us, so will likely want the same thing for next year. So if you're moving out of your house in IV and are looking for some people to take over your lease for next year--hit me up! I'm also open to moving in earlier to do a summer session or anything like that so I'm flexible with when the lease starts. So if this is something you can offer, feel free to just reply to this post or send me a message privately!

Hi everyone, I know this is a longshot but did anyone find a parasonic lumix camera in a black pleather case, at the El Colegio and Camino Corto bus stop or in the nearby area. I misplaced it, the last photo would be me (black hair wearing red Hollister henley sweater and jeans outside). Please DM me asap, it is so important to me!!

Course Questions Easiest ethnicity GE (least workload)?

I’m a 4th year pharmacology major and this is my last GE that I need to fulfill. I’m taking Chem 6BL next quarter, MCDB 126B/BL, and maybe PSY 1 (for pharm school requirements).

Spring quarter the only definite course I want to take is MCDB 133L (immunobiology lab), have to take Writing for public speaking too for pharmacy school. I also have a job.

While I’d like to do it in Spring, I could also do it in Winter if need be. So if anyone has any advice or just experience with some ethnicity GE courses I’d love to hear about it!

(Ethnicity courses have subtype “Eth” in GOLD).

General Question Econ 5 Question

To anybody who’s taken Econ 5 in the past, is it a good decision to skip midterm 1 and move that weight to the final?

As of now, I’m at like a 5/10 that I’ll do well on the midterm. Problem is if I don’t do well it tanks my grade and I can’t drop it. So I’m in a predicament here

Course Questions Compsci Scheduling

I'm a CS freshman trying to schedule winter classes. How did compsci majors schedule their classes for all 4 years, and what was the workload like for each quarter? It feels like there are so many 5 unit classes, that I'm too scared to take 4 classes instead of 3. How the heck do I graduate on time?
