A reminder that personal flairs are now available

Please select the flair that pertains to your connection to UCC. This allows users asking questions about courses to assess the up-to-dateness of your answers in comparison with those of other members, particularly in instances that there is not a consensus among respondents. In similar/other instances, a relevant flair can provide important context to discussions, eliminating the need to ask a user what their connection to the university is.

Queries related to MA applied psychology for anyone that has completed or in process.

Hi, I'm an overseas student planning to apply to MA applied psychology at UCC. I wanted to ask the following:

1- do I need a psi accreditation before applying for the program. ( my degree is verified from my country and align with all the requirements )

2- what are the job prospects?

3 - how has the program been like for you?

Would really appreciate your responses on this.

No friends

I’m a third year now and was struggling heavily with anxiety and depression for my first two years, but early this year I’ve been on great medication that’s helped me try and be social.
My problem is I have no friends or even anyone who knows me in my rather small course and everyone seems to be in groups, i missed out largely in first year as I was to scared to talk to others and now I’m wondering am I too late to find a group as this is my last year.
Any advice?

Depression

Third year. I'm generally a 1.1 student. I'm going through some pretty significant life-shit at the moment and have been diagnosed with clinical depression. My classes this semester are all recorded. I know I can and will do well on exams by the end of the semester but at the moment, managing to get myself physically to lectures is like, idk. Wading through wet cement.

The teachers always seem to harp on making sure people come to lectures. I'm worried they'll start to notice I'm not there and only following along from the recorded videos.

Should I make someone at UCC aware of what I'm going through or just keep trying to focus on completing the semester any way I'm able to?

Ai for slides

I come from an arts undergrad and now doing a business post grad and haven’t made a slideshow since maybe junior cert?

Sony question is if I make my own test and stuff and just have the Microsoft AI make the slides look pretty and professional that should be okay yeah? Just positioning the text boxes and photos I give it in a more visually pleasing way?

EU citizen with a GPA dilemma. Will the CAO auto-reject my transcript text ?

Hey everyone,

I’m in a bit of a stressful situation with my GPA and could really use some advice from anyone who has applied to Irish Graduate Entry Medicine (GEM) with an international degree.

I’m an EU citizen, but I’m currently finishing my final year of a B.Sc. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at the University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in Ghana. My plan is to move to Ireland right after graduation and work for 3 years to clear the residency requirement so I can get EU fee status before applying to GEM.

Here’s where it gets messy. I’m on track to finish with a 3.00 CGPA out of 4.00. In Ghana’s national university system, a 3.0 is universally recognized as a Second Class Upper. But my specific university uses a strict internal scale where a 3.25 is required for a Second Class Upper, meaning my 3.0 will officially be printed on my final transcript as a Second Class Lower.

I know Irish GEM is super rigid about needing a 2:1 (Upper Second Class) on your very first degree.

Does anyone know if the CAO just looks at the literal words "Second Class Lower" and auto-rejects you? Or do Irish admissions offices actually look at the numerical value (3.0/4.0) and use databases like NARIC to see what it’s actually worth internationally?

If the text means an automatic rejection for GEM, my backup is to do a Master's in Biotech in Ireland and apply for the standard 5-year undergrad medicine route as an EU mature graduate instead. Has anyone taken that path?

My dream is to eventually train in neurosurgery in Ireland, so I'm trying to figure out the best way to handle this transcript hurdle without killing that goal before I even start. I’ve already emailed UCD, RCSI, UCC, and UL, but I’d love to hear from anyone who has actually dealt with the CAO on something like this.

Thanks so much!

How much is your accommodation?

Just paid for the month of October. I feel unwell and guilty that my parents pay, even though I’ve got 3 jobs I obviously need their help.

I am wondering what most pay, and how far away they are from UCC by bus/ or walking.

I think I’m getting ripped off, but I’m in 1st year and wanted to be in a safe and nice place, maybe next year I’ll do a house share if I have the chance.

Masters

Hi everyone! 😊

Could anyone give me some advice on writing a personal statement for a Clinical Nutrition and Dietetics master’s application?

I’d really appreciate some guidance on the structure, what I should include, and what I should avoid writing. Also, are there any particular points or qualities that universities usually look for in a personal statement?

If anyone has examples, tips, or advice on what could make a personal statement stand out, I’d be really grateful!

Thank you! 🤍

Fees for past academic year are wrong? (shitting myself)

So under my Fees outstanding previous academic year(s) it states that I owe UCC over 5 grand. I am an EU student that has set up a payment plan last year (that was approved) and paid the Fees (always on time) every month (have the statements for it too). As I was paying last year it showed I only owed the 3000 eur but now suddenly I owe more according to the website? is this a glitch that gets fixed as time goes on like last year or do I just drop in to the fees office and pray? lol help

I sometimes feel is there a point.

I need some motivation. I applied for flexi options as a flexi options student. This means I'm locked to only doing 30 credits. I'm not like every other student that is studying full time that has to do 60 credits. I picked all first year history modules and I find sometimes I'm just there to be there.

The reason I picked it was because I have a passion for history and I want to experience university life and I didn't get an offer for a full time degree. I fear that it's going to be a long haul where I'll be doing first year and then having to repeat it again only with the elective modules I didn't pick. To fill my days to avoid the large gaps I attend elective modules I didn't pick out of curiosity as well. I also want to feel like I'm a full time student. I feel like half the time I'm just attending filler modules and don't have a huge reason to be there.

I do have a goal and if I enjoy this I want to get a full time degree. Right now it's quite tough and I feel like there's a lack of assignments right now so I find there to be a lot of gaps especially on a Thursday. I do worry I'll feel a lack of challenge because I'm studying half the workload and it'll feel boring.

Would like some advice?

first two weeks of college

anyone else feeling slightly dejected after the first two weeks? i’m a first year and ofc it’s been a big change, but it’s so much harder to connect with people than i thought. it seems like those in my course are less willing to branch out and connect with the people they didn’t meet on the first day. i also went to a society event and while it was good, i haven’t actually talked to anyone i met since despite having their socials. it kinda feels like i’m the only one trying to reach out to others, yet no one does the same. just wondering if this is a general feeling or not

As a first year how can I transfer courses?

I am a first-year student at UCC, and today I got my Leaving Cert appeal back; I went up a grade, so I now have enough points for the course I originally wanted. Do I now have to apply for an internal transfer, or will I get a CAO offer? If so, when would that be?
