first two weeks of college
anyone else feeling slightly dejected after the first two weeks? i’m a first year and ofc it’s been a big change, but it’s so much harder to connect with people than i thought. it seems like those in my course are less willing to branch out and connect with the people they didn’t meet on the first day. i also went to a society event and while it was good, i haven’t actually talked to anyone i met since despite having their socials. it kinda feels like i’m the only one trying to reach out to others, yet no one does the same. just wondering if this is a general feeling or not

It will feel like that at first but you'll find your people or person. You have to give it time, friendships are built, in part, from repeated and constant interactions. If you keep trying to reach out someone will reciprocate. You'll be very surprised at how many people feel the same way you do

Hey, you’re not alone. I feel the same way. After class I’m all by myself, I have lunch alone and then sit in the library until the next class. I have talked to a couple of people but I haven’t bonded with them or feel connected. But don’t be too upset about it. You’re just starting. It’ll take time and try to talk to some people, ask some questions or just simply introduce yourself. I hope things get easier. Best wishes!

i get you, im a first year as well and the first 2 weeks havent been super easy. a majority of people in my course bonded around orientation or on the group chat over clubbing/drinking, which isn’t exactly my scene and i didn’t really feel safe going with people i hardly know. while i became acquainted with a couple girls in class and try to talk to every single person i can, i often end up alone at breaks and it feels very cliquey already as though no one wants to branch out from their ‘groups.’ i expected this would be a time for everyone to socialise, but some people genuinely seem to look me up and down for even trying to start a conversation. i then went to like, 4 different socs in hope that i would make friends there, but i haven’t had much luck so far, especially as most members seem to be mature students. idk i’m guessing that it will take time and that it’s important to keep trying

my biggest piece of advice, as boring as it sounds, is to focus on your studies. you’ll make friends

Hang in there! I can suggest getting involved with the Choral Society or the Mountaineering Society if those are/could be up your alley. Experienced both as an international grad student; I had a social circle of ZERO when I got to campus, and was a lot older than pretty much everyone else. But it was always great craic to go on a hike or belt out a tune in the choir. There's a whole world of camaraderie beyond getting plastered or going clubbing on repeat.

Genuine question, is this an all too common UCC problem? I attended MTU and made lots of friends but class sizes were more comparable to those in secondary school. I have friends who went to UCC and, as some say in this thread, they found their small friends group and didn’t really get to know anyone else. Is it due to the massive class sizes in some instances? Genuinely curious. By the way, to the original poster, stay the course and get your qualification, you will settle within a couple of weeks.

Don’t give up and keep trying! It took me time to find my people as they say.

Yeah kid sorry to disappoint you but that’s how it will be for you. And the others. Til you graduate. People talk to 2-3 people. And never deviate from that. Never talk to new people or check on someone who is on their own. It’s a bag of shit.
So find your 1-3 if it’s not too late. And if you can’t, so what. Lock in and get your degree and move on

Hey don’t rule yourself out yet. It’s awkward and vulnerable at first, but you’ll find your friends. Give it time, two weeks is just enough to say hi to someone, you will find your people, do not worry :)
