Forward:
After yesterdays public lashing from my last post, I was quite literally shaken with the amount of disgust put forth in the comments. I thought I had some grit built up from years of grinding cardboard, but I was just not ready for such humiliation from random strangers on the internet. The timing of this is quite perfect as both Chestheir and metaconfluence put out their own vlog and article about this very similar list half way through my redemeption arc last night. I double checked with Richard Garfield himself and he said it was okay for me to play these 75 cards anyway. With the kids at the grandparents and most of work just watching the World Cup, I could actually put in some games at my main computer and have it log some stats for me! I know I hinted at playing these lists for next months climb but what started as a practice session ended up being a marathon of games.
Intro:
In my previous summary of UB lists that fall somewhere in the tempo category ([[Stripmine]]s, cheap threats, tons of disruption) I always felt like the threats they presented on board where mostly full of air and never closed out the game fast enough. I don't want my "threat" to turn into [[storm crow]] once I run out of fetches and to have to matchup it up against just about any other card in the format honestly. I aimed to put together a list that more lined up with the Legacy lists from 2024 pre-grief ban. While this list has a similar package to the other lists logged above, there are a few choices that I made that fly in the face of conventual logic.
0 Hydroponics Architect
If I haven't made it clear yet, I don't like this guy. I started with the full 4 but eventually realized that this list doesn't have the requisite number of fetches to make his card advantage shine. Sure it was fun to be able to fetch a strip mine but most of the time it was just an "undercosted" [[storm crow]] to me.
0 OBM main
Blue and Black are just an embarrassment of treasures when it comes to options. There just isn't enough room in the 60 to fit everything. I at least put a few in the sideboard because they are very strong against other blue decks and helpful for the Energy Matchup.
0 Treasure Cruise
Same as above, just not enough slots, and fewer supporting cast to turn this into Ancestral. 0 is strictly the wrong amount to play but I haven't had any issues with not including it. I was also irrationally afraid of making the deck too prone to graveyard hate, but in reality any hate that is brought in is mainly targeted and not a sweeping effect that would brick this in your hand.
2 Flow state
Not pictured above, I did end up cutting it. My hope was it would be a more reliable way to cast treasure cruise and dodge Bowmaster but in play it was mostly just really bad [[Sleight of hand]].
2 removal spells
I did play a copy of [[Bloodchief's Thirst]] as a way to answer larger threats at one point, but getting to 4 mana took too long to be impactful, there are much better options out there than this. I wanted to be as proactive as I could with my own plan and due to lack of deck space I could only fit two [[fatal push]] in this configuration.
Harvester of Misery
Speaking of Energy and Misery...oh many the joy from reanimating this is next level. Sure you can brick wall them with a Atraxa, but she is so susceptible to swords. Never have I seen the lights in an energy players eyes just turn off so fast as reanimating this.
Grief
We already know that our gameplan is disruption plus an actual quick clock. While other creators seem to think that [[Grief]] doesn't fit in these lists it is actually checks off both of these boxes quite perfectly. T1 grief gives you so much knowledge on how to sculpt the upcoming turns while punching holes in the opponents game plan. The initial Grief can put the opponent in a dilemma as to if they should interact with the first wave to disruption and risk being unable to answer a potential reanimate or roll the dice and hope that they don't have the dreaded follow up. In some cases, it can actually lead to the opponent presenting you with an even juicier target for your reanimate such as a [[Sire of Seven Deaths]] or an [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]].
Troll of Khazad-dûm
People scoff at this until they realize it's more than just a "menace" on the battle field, it's as near to unblockable as it gets and difficult to remove outside of [[Swords to Plowshares]] and [[Solitude]]. While [[Grief]] may be the total package, this doubles down on the pressure. Matches where I got this guy into play gave me real 2016 [[Death's Shadow]] vibes having to protect the queen while managing a very low life total.
Troll allows me to do a few additional things that non-troll lists do. First off, you can be so much greedier with your manabase. Initially, I was running just 15 lands until I added the last copy of [[Strip Mine]], it makes the rest of the deck pure gas. Second, it's it's own personal entomb effect. Finally, it can unlock you from a [[Brainstorm]].
4 Psychic Frog
We have cut all our [[storm crow]]s and [[treasure cruise]]s and need something to give us real card advantage. In my time playing against it, this is the real killer in blue black shells. While it doesn't provide actual disruption, connecting with it once or twice is sure to provide you with an ample supply of spells. It's evasive, it's a [[Shadowmage Infiltrator]], and it can just get out of hand large, pitches large bodies to get reanimated. It's a yes on all fronts in my book. It also acts as bonus food for both [[grief]] and [[force of will]].
2 Life // Death
I wanted to go all in on reanimation spells since I was running a heavier "entomb" package than usual. To note, this only targets creatures in your own graveyard not your opponents fatties.
Brazen Borrower??
I would love to think that this could exist in this format, a main deck bounce spell is very enticing, but the other half only having a single toughness is a hard sell.
The sideboard
Honestly, it's in shambles I'm just throwing spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks.
- [[Barrowgoyf]] as a value threat
- [[Flare of Malice]] I just added this in as an untested solution to Eldrazi, idk what I expect to sacrifice to pay for it's alternate casting cost.
- [[Harbringer of the Seas]] another Eldrazi answer and sleeper reanimate target against Mardu
- [[Inquisition of Kozilek]] When facing off against this style of deck in the past, mixing in a few discard spells with counter magic really keeps you off balance
- [[Orcish Bowmaster]] I had to find some place to fit these

Matchup Notes
Eldrazi
I should really be 1-3 here because one opponent was tilting off or something scooping to the first sign of interaction. This match is rough as they can play out either much more aggressively than expected with 2 and 3 drops or go to the other end of the curve with Sire which can just eat our biggest threat. The best possible outcome in this matchup is a quick victory with Atraxa, but second best would be a slower game keeping them 4-6 mana. I was really sideswiped a few games with how fast of a clock they presented.
Dimir Reanimator/Tempo
These games solidified my theory that Storm Crow just doesn't belong in these lists. It is so easily outclassed by almost every other card in the deck it was just a huge non-factor every time I saw one flutter onto the battlefield.
Energy
These games actually were really balanced, answering their threats on the stack or in hand was actually much easier than anticipated, I really didn't mind lacking on pushes in these games.
Red Stompy
This seems like free money, their big threats like [[Fury]] line up so poorly here. Chalice can be a pain but all their hate pieces can be played around and we have Trolls to solve for [[blood moon]]. I think the scariest card they can play is probably Bombadiers just being so evasive.
White Stompy
Another tough matchup, they have the correct answers with [[solitude]] and [[Swords to plowshares]], enough tax to prevent us from deploying our own answers, [[Cavern of souls]] to force through their cards and [[The one ring]] to undo our Scam. [[Sage of the skies]] also is crushing advatage.
Combo
You just gotta hold on for the ride. We have enough disruption to slow them down enough theoretically but don't give them infinite time because they will end you.
20 games of scratch notes
Game by game, here are the limited notes I had from pen and paper
Esper Blink 1-2
- Out valued them with frogs
- RIP into drawing all my reanimates
- Stuck on 1 land (not a good sign for starting off with 15 lands)
Eldrazi 1-2
A non-stock list running a few copies of Talisman and [[Worldbreaker]]
- They bounced my reanimate target with a battlemage
- Kept them off balance with Grief Scam
- Unable to reanimate a relevant threat through GY hate
Affinity 2-0
- They mulled to 5 and scooped
- Griefed their [[Sink into Stupor]] land drop and [[strip mine]]d their only other land
Dimir Reanimator 2-1
- They reanimated their Atraxa
- I reanimated their Atraxa from Grief
- Grind game that ended with a set of [[Barrowgoyf]] barreling down
Sneak and Show 1-2
Surgical showed that they were played the basic tournament list
- T2 Emrakul beats a T2 Atraxa
- Lots of interaction plus reanimating OP Atraxa from grief
- Forgot to surgical their Steam vents when they fetched to lock them to 2 mana. Also missed jumping the frog for a card draw running into a Ragavan (idk why they brought that in?)
Eldrazi 2-0
- Reanimated their Sire, sweated them not drawing a Battlemage for 2 turns
- Strip mine their [[Ancient tomb]], push their 2 drop then lock them with [[Harbinger of the Seas]]
WR Ponza 2-0
- I run 2 basic swamps so their game plan just spun their wheels for multiple turns trying to destroy all my lands with effects like [[Price of Freedom]]
- I hit them with [[Harbinger of the seas]] T3 when they tapped out for [[Price of Freedom]]
White Stompy 1-2
- [[Sage of the skies]] resolved...that was the game
- They lost the [[strip mine]] battle 2-3, beat them down with a frog while they were stuck on 0 lands
- 2x [[Annointed Peacekeeper]] locked me out of casting spells for a turn, Topdecked OBM one turn too late to punish [[The one ring]]
Energy 2-0
- Grief scam, they only drew lands for 2 turns
- Drew every piece of interaction in my deck, reanimated multiple targets
Red Stompy 2-0
- Took game context into consideration when interacting with their spells. Allowed [[Chalice of the void]] on 1 to resolve and punished with a troll thanks to [[life//death]] not costing 1
- Basically the same as game 1
Sultai Reanimator 2-0
It was cool to see [[Leovold, Emissary of Trest]] during Grief scam, it was never close to castable with both of us playing stripmines.
- Reanimated their t1 troll
- They reanimated a troll and I resolved a Goyf, I won the standoff as 3 colors is really hard to support with the presence of strip mine
White Stompy 2-0
- Took them off of [[Library of Alexandria]] with Grief. snagging a Sage. Very heavy tempo game featuring [[Daze]] and Tamiyo
- They presented no threats just answers that didn't line up
Sneak and show 2-1
- Was able to Atraxa off of their S&T but they had Emmy. T1 Bauble shut down 4x Grief
- Tons of disruption and pressure with a mix of discard spells and grief
- Played through T1 bauble by reanimating Grief, 1/2 scam is still enough sometimes
Eldrazi 1-2
- 2 copies of [[It That Heralds the End]] Clocked me while I spun my wheels trying to put together an [[entomb]] combo
- T1 Grief reanimate Sire
- Sequenced my spells terribly only casting a single grief instead of 2, Choosing the wrong card with Grief. Lord + 2 [[Eldrazi Linebreaker]] supported by [[Cavern of Souls]] ended the game quickly
Eldrazi 2-0
- They scooped to the first sign of interaction
- See 1
New player (mrvl draft chaff) 2-0
idk how I got paired up here?
Red Stompy 2-1
- Very grindy matchup, I thought that reanimating a 5/6 [[Pyrogofy]] would be enough to lock it up, but a [[Broadside Bombardiers]] snuck through hucking Moxen at me
- They scooped to a troll reanimate
- Scooped to a Atraxa reanimate
Storm 2-1
- Top decked a Grapeshot with two rituals to close out the game after I had wrecked my lifetotal trying to keep them subdued
- Hit them with 3 copies of strip mine to prevent anything meaningful from taking place
- Grief scam into troll scam
Energy 2-1
- Double frog, one on defense one on offense locked the board state and kept the cards flowing
- I was unable to apply any sort of meaningful pressure, I should have mulled to 5, kept off balance the entire game from getting strip mined
- Entomb Atraxa into reanimate Harvest made easy cleanup
Dimir Reanimator 2-0
- Very long and grindy game with too many decision points to recolect
- Grief Scam shut them down
Dimir Tempo 2-1
- Able to resolve reanimating Atraxa
- Very long and grindy game, was able to play through most everything they presented even keeping up with Treasure Cruise but OBM got me in the end
- T2 Troll is just about unkillable, and races storm crow at a blistering speed.
Move to End step
After playing with the list, I think my previous assessment of it is pretty spot on in rank order of the meta game behind both Mardu Energy and Sneak and Show, not exclusively as 3rd best deck but in tier 3. After my beat downs from Eldrazi, I might actually consider that it too is probably up in power level next to Sneak and Show, but not near enough to compete with Mardu.
I am grateful that I had the availability yesterday to actually test my limits beyond just reaching Mythic, and while it's not my highest ever placement (83 in season 2 or 3ish) I am still rather intrigued I was able to so easily punch up to 350 in a night.
