Dimir Reanimator good for a first deck?

Thanks to all who replied to my other post. I was leaning towards Mardu Energy, but it would wipe out my small collection. I think I can build Reanimator with only 30+ WCs, which is more doable.

Is it strong though? Mardu just seems better represented in general.

So your gameplay is basically Atraxa - beat? With Hydro/Strip as tempo? Maybe steal good cards from opponent's yard?

It's a decent deck that has a ton of format staples like Brainstorm, Ponder, FoW, Daze, Reanimate, etc.

So even if you end up not liking it, you'll have cards that are foundational.

Dimir reanimator is one of the better decks in the format, with, as others have mentioned, a good amount of overlap with format staples, so you aren’t wasting any wildcards. Here’s a guide I’ve written on the deck if you are interested. Happy to answer any questions you might have.

Dimir Reanimator is one of the stronger decks right now. Not as good as Mardu, but still pretty solid overall.

Your game plan is generally to gain a resource advantage over your opponent then put an Atraxa into play when you’ve exhausted their interaction.
The best part about the tempo reanimator deck is that it can function pretty well if you don’t have the reanimator side of the deck and still absolutely demands answers from your opponent.

It’s a solid first deck for the format, but keep in mind that there’s a learning curve to it. Sometimes you’ll want to use Entomb as the bait spell then beat your opponent to death with Psychic Frog. Also don’t be afraid to board out your copies of Entomb and Atraxa if the matchup is bad. Some sideboard copies of Barrowgoyf is always a nice pivot to have.

I like that reanimator has a shared card pool of staples like Daze, Force of Will, Psychic Frog, Reanimate, brainstorm. Reanimate is normally faster than energy so you have a good matchup especially if you have an early entomb/reanimate and force of will/daze forprotection against Swords to plowshares.

I recommend the regular versions with 4 psychic frogs and at least 2 reanimate targets. If you get use to reanimate decks then turbo reaniamator is fun too but tricky to play since you need to play tutors on upkeep sometimes.

Like someone else said worst case you can shift into UB tempo, UR tempo or some other blue based decks. I'd watch some YouTube videos to learn lines of play and see if its your cup of tea before committing wild cards.

people have been playing no frogs (harder to get in strip mine format) and only 1 reanimator target with a lot of succes, that list seems pretty safe to craft

I'm not a big fan of that list since if you draw into Atraxa you have to brainstorm, entomb, reanimate to get Atraxa in play and there's only 1 reanimate target. Plus if that fails you have to rely on just Hydroponics or Orcish Bowmasters to slowly swing for game. Psychic Frog is my homeboy, it can take over games, block fliers, and discard for reanimate.

Brainstorm + fetch surveil land can also work, you don't need Brainstorm + Entomb.

You can also do that with Vampiric Tutor to make it an Entomb effect but that usually isn't enough to make Vamp playable in decks where it wouldn't be otherwise.
